- Camping in Botswana
As we head inland from the Chobe River, toward the Savuti Marsh (a mere 160 kilometres away), we take it quite easy, thinking it will be a very short trip to our next campsite. Not quite. The sandy road (all of 68km) takes a long time, but when we finally arrive, we're quite happy with our site at Camp Savuti SKL. They've put us in site 10, right on the edge of the camping area. Not on the channel, but nevertheless a great site, with loads of shade, nice privacy, and quite a few animals wandering through.
Also, a lot less bugs than at the Chobe River sites at Ihaha. Not sure what it is about the Savuti area, but the lions and elephants here are EXTREMELY vocal during our stay, and every evening there is a veritable chorus of roaring and trumpeting. There also seem to be some skirmishes taking place in the night. Hopefully the animals are too busy to come stalk us at our site, as we huddle close to the fire for "safety". The lions sound quite close, after all.
The camp features great, walled, ablutions, but we never quite have a taste of the hot water meant to be on offer. Nevermind, as it's nice and hot and humid in Botswana anyway. There is a firepit, a drum braai (BBQ), and some work surfaces too. Another great unfenced campsite in Botswana, well worth the visit. Just be prepared for the long sandy slog.

Been to this campsite three times. It’s among my favourites. Wildlife was abundant every time. Best lion encounters ever
Lots of wildlife, and lots of interesting sounds at night. A great camp site 👌🏾
Thank you @travelgigolo for visiting our campsite. We hope to see you again, Keep camping!
Thanks! We loved our stay there!
Thank you so much, we are going with our family this april.
Hope you have a great time. We really enjoyed the Botswana overland trip.
We found Botswana Footprints very efficient and good at getting us bookings and do all our Moremi bookings.
Thanks, will look them up 👍🏾
We have used them quite a few times with great success
That is incredible, those animals passing near or through the campsite. we don't get anything like this in Australia, not on this scale. That elephant was awesome.
It's quite an experience, especially with all the night sounds. The lions roaring close by can be quite intimidating.
Great review. First time viewer. Subscribed🤙
Glad you found it informative 👍🏾
Thanks for supporting the channel.
As always, a great review Thank you
Thanks! Great site, we enjoyed the sound of lions at night.
Great review as always from cape town
Thanks! It's a nice setting, we enjoyed the feeling of unspoilt wilderness.
Howzit Gig! Awesome review as always ❤ Need to go there sometime.
Definitely recommended! I think Botswana has a good thing going with the way they have set up their campsites. Thanks for the feedback 👍🏾
Nice vedeos brother keep us intertained Bafo.
Siyabonga! Glad you are enjoying the videos 👍🏾
There is water at every campsite. You put ur hand through a pipe in that green concrete block and there is a tap in there..
That's interesting, we didn't see that, only the small pipe. May we didn't look hard enough 🤷🏾♂️
Correct. Check the hole first though before putting your hand in 😂
@@doti78 Ofcos 🤣🤣🤣
😄😄😄
The restaurant is only for the tented camp which is run by SKL, which has been closed (re-opening in June)
Okay, they didn't mention that the restaurant would only be for the tented camp 👍🏾
Hi, thank you very much for a great video, I really appreciate it. We are trying to book a place at this campsite but cannot find a site on which we can do this, wondering if you have any tips, car with tent. :-) Arnt
Hi there, the contact details are in the description below the video. Website and email.
When you say it is hot, what temperature are talking about?
Temperatures were in the low 30's, so not that high. However, it was also very humid so it felt really hot.
What is generally the practice for tipping or not tipping those clearing ash etc? Not just in Botswana.
Good question. I'm sure there's a large divergence of opinion on this. We will tip when we receive service or assistance that is really good, or if someone goes out of their way to help or something of that nature. The tips are a significant source of income for some people, so I'm happy to tip if it is deserved.
Quick questions: How busy were the campsites on this trip? Are they busier in the dry season? Or the same? Now that I'm typing the questions, I'm thinking you might not have that info. 🤔
It was relatively quiet when we were there, about 50% occupied. Third bridge was full though.
I expect that the campsites will be full in the dry season. There aren't many campsites. Very different to camping in SA national parks.
