    My 2016 Model S has covered 259,000 miles so far. I'm hoping that in the future, maybe 3 or so years down the road, there will be an option for a lighter pack, with a slight range improvement and faster charging, more in line with the later cars.

    • @Nordlicht05
      @Nordlicht05 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@taylorc2542 more interesting is the motor. I lately saw a company wich repairs faulty older model s motors. These motors do have a bad sealing where coolant gets into the motor at some point. If noticed too late it gets into the electronics. But I really don't know on what milage this occurs. Later motors they said are a lot better.

    It would be an excellent idea to offer these upgrades to everyone as a paid for service. It would have major benefits for Tesla, its customers, and the planet. Tesla can still make money from the upgrades, and there would be less need to build more cars. Recyling old cars with new much more reliable and better range batteries would be a benefit to customers who might not be able to afford a brand new car, and of course it's a benefit to the planet also. It's the way forward.

      It's a challenge though in terms of ensuring proper weight distribution, but it's worth the steps forward to achieve that closed-loop recycling dream.

    Tesla should offer extended warranties for the batteries and cars. They should have enough data now to price them. It would take uncertainty out for the owner or used car buyer. Tesla even could take into account past usage style, if it affects longevity.

    I kinda like the performance of my 23 MYP with the 2170 cells. I wouldn't want it to be heavier than it now is. Maybe in 7 years from now they will have lighter LFP type batteries. I think it's a great idea to be able to upgrade batteries just like all the upgrades possible with ICE cars.

    I have a 2021 model three and the HV batteries are out on the warranty. I just got a call from the service to ask if I want to replace my older batteries with the LFP. I said absolutely. So yeah this is a thing but only if your batteries go out on a warranty. I do see them offering this as an upgrade in the future.

  • @medman36
    @medman36 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very very nice! I think with exclusion criteria warranty and "faulty battery" the amount of cars that will be elligible will be small. Faulty battery is an expression that hides susceptibility to interpretation for good and bad.
    I like the idea of battery replacement as a service. But I think it will be a long while before we see that, because batteries are in high demand. Maybe when outgoing battery pack modules becomes a thing we might see service come into play as a convenience factor for another for profit business model I think would make most sense to Tesla.
    Conversion kits would be very nice😃. If it also supports very good lane assist and adaptive cruise control, with Tesla motor and battery, that would be awesome.

    I think the problem for older Teslas is the hardware that's runs the software . We know with computers there operating systems degrade . With that loading can get quite slow and glitchy . I have a older laptop that allowed windows 10 upgrade some years back but won't allow windows 11 . It originally had windows 7 which Microsoft does not update . So there will be a time that Tesla may not update its older systems .

    • @danharold3087

      Let me give this a try. Tesla cars from 1000 feet up have several computer systems. The ones that come to mind are the display(s), FSD, and several RTOS based systems. RTOS meaning Real Time Operating System, a classification not a brand. Most everything that makes the car go happens in the RTOS systems because they give instant response. The display computer allows the driver to interface with car but little 'work' is done there. I am sure you can find better more detailed descriptions elsewhere on the net.

    LFP or LiFePO4 actually has been used in e-bikes since 2013. I used to build my e-bikes with them because it has double the life span of regular lithium batteries. However, in terms of peak voltage and weight, the 21700 is better. I suspect that’s why they will give the car new suspension to deal with the increased battery weight.

  • @ferfromla

    My Bolt EV's ternary battery has an 8 year or 100k mile warranty, but I'm hoping it'll last 200k miles with reasonable care with maybe a 20% range loss. It's four years old and has 16k miles now, so I'll reach eight years long before I reach 100k miles. I may not own it when it reaches 200k miles, but if I do, a replacement battery may be very affordable by that time. EVs and especially EV batteries are improving so rapidly now that it's hard to imagine what they'll be like in a decade. If we have true robotaxis by then, I may not own a car at all. Subscribing to a service may be less expensive.
    The car won't be worth much anyway. I've only driven one car 200k miles, a Toyota Celica. It was my first car, and it was literally falling apart when I finally sold it.

    Electric cars, pickup trucks and S.U.V.s accounted for nearly 40 percent of new auto registrations in the San Jose California area in 2023 and about 34 percent in San Francisco, according to data from S&P Global Mobility, an automotive market research firm, that was published last week. Tesla continually improves all their products, even the cars they have sold in the past. Just one more reason potential competitiors aren't even trying to compete. Sad that legacy auto don't step up and try to emulate Tesla instead of resigning themselves to failure and bancruptcy.

    Thus far, the only people who have needed to pay for a Model 3 battery are those who damaged the original battery in a collision. The car is not yet 8 years old, so all other replacements thus far have been covered by warranty. The issue at stake here is the high probability of M3/MY Std. Range needing warranty service of battery more frequently, due to reduced range, using up the max cycling faster. It is better to make it an upgrade, with a small 🥕 to add on(suspension improvement). It is also possible the new upgraded LFP battery needs an updated mount(part of suspension🤔).This will avoid unneeded free replacement service in future, while even paying for the supposedly free warranty replacement. Tesla is good at tracking numbers, and it seems to point this way. Just some 💭

      Yup give folks a decent trade in credit(used pack level values for recycling are $2,500-$3,500 currently for ev pack's and more if taken apart and sold as modules for conversions and home storage. And states should offer say a $1,000 credit for any 3-5 year old ev pack replacement.
      Could bring replacing a battery down to $4-6k that way. Or about the same as a rebuilt trans or rebuilt engine costs.
      Then buying a cheap used ev, made cheaper by the 4k used ev credit and slapping one of these pack's in would make sense for lower&middle income folks very quickly.
      Even used ev car dealers if state incentives existed could go confidently buy up low range older used evs, swap in newer pack's and ask 6-8k more post upgrade for them and get it with the used ev 4k credit no problem. 👍🏻😎

    LiFePo4 has lower voltage per cell (4.2v vs 3.3v) and therefore less energy density across the whole battery.

The voltage drop on nickel turnery batteries from empty to full is much higher, making it easy to calculate how charged it is. The LFP chemistry gives you a very consistent voltage, which is great, until it runs out. I think when you full charge it, Tesla measures how much energy you pulled out since you last charged it. LFP is supposed to have much higher cycle life, like 3000 to 5000 cycles, so it would be surprising if the degredation was high.
