      Toyota has been on this fictional battery narrative for well over a decade now. Not enough people are publicly calling out Toyota for their blatant bald faced lies. Cheers to the head of CATL for doing so. More people in the industry should stand up and call Toyota out to produce any evidence of their fake claims. They are not doing a lot of research quietly. They are doing research, but it is not a lot of commitment. We know this because when they do research, they release patents related to the research as it progresses. This is true even when the company has really good reasons to keep research completely secret, like Huawei/SMIC/etc not wanting the US to tighten sanctions any faster. CATL and BYD do not have large numbers of patents on solid state batteries yet, which suggests that they are doing research, but it is not a high priority.

      I'm an American as well and agree with your wish with one caveat: If the US allowed Chinese EV autos in now without the severe tax premium currently in effect, they would quickly drive all US automakers out of business sans Tesla. Like it or not, our government won't allow this. Hence the current Chinese auto import tax. This may not be unfair. There are reports from multiple sources that the Chinese government is heavily subsidizing the cost of several auto manufacturers (and the EU is investigating this at present). Regardless, you're right that GM, Ford, and Stellantis need to become competitive the BEV production ASAP or they"ll eventually go bankrupt. I do think their shift to hybrid vehicles in lieu of BEVs may buy legacy automakers some time, but the total move to pure BEVs is inevitable IMHO.

    I remember that a battery scientist once explained that it is easy to make a solid-state battery in the lab. The problem is that the coating process produces very thick layers. To make those homogenous is a challenge, so you do effectivly replace the dry step with a compress step. After all, the holy grail is to have coating process that does not need drying and it's layers are so thin and smooth that it does not need any other postprocessing. And..... that's a different thing than having metal-only anode. Just having a thick layer of metal may sound good, and as just mentioned, it works in the lab. But the ions have a hard time to get through.

    • @mfb424
      @mfb424 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If ASSB is made to the expanded state the thickness variation is not a problem. With host materials in all layers these cells can be made lithium, potassium or sodium starved. Meaning there is no way to either over charge or discharge the cell. When talking about ASSB we need to remember it is a very broad concept. Thousands of different variations. It is very version specific how safe or how cheap they are to make.

      Yes I was going to make a similar comment! Isn't it funny how China puts people with PhD as their CEO that intellectually understands the business inside and out and the business becomes wildly successful and world leading. The 2 times the US does it we get the IPhone and Elon Musk yet Wallstreet and a lot of the general public jumping up and down screaming how this is a disaster and we need "accountable CEO's that play by the rules" aka bend over and mold to whatever special interests want them to. If we have an economic down turn in the near future I'm convinced that it is because we have politicians as CEO's that have been fluffing the system for years and fooling everyone into believing the company is doing meaningful and valuable work while in reality they are twiddling their thumbs and doing virtually nothing of true value. The way it would shake out is that these virtuistic companies would get absolutely crushed or wiped out entirely. Meanwhile the companies with PhD and scientists and engineers as CEO's that are doing truly meaningful work will finally be regonized for it and fairly rewarded. Cheers!

      @sullivanrachael หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The snag is many people won’t drive 42,000 miles in a decade , and need a simple car that lasts a long time. They don’t need a 2 ton luxury car either. For this sort of average motoring, EVs are too big, too expensive. The other snag is the batteries consume a lot of resources to build, and the recycling of them is not yet perfected. This could lead to a massive waste problem. EVs aren’t the ideal machine for everyone.

    • @yodaiam1000

      @@sullivanrachael ICE actually takes far more resources and those resources are not recyclable. When you get 97% of the material back from recycling in a more pure form, I would call that near perfect. The recycling also have 30% of the carbon footprint of mining the material directly. EVs are far more efficient so the fact that they weigh more than an equivalent ICE car is not a big deal. The degradation component related to time is also not a major issue. There is now a CATL bus battery that is warranted to 15 years and 1.5 millions kilometers (the warranty limit is 85% useful storage left). In fifteen years time batteries will also be a lot cheaper. LFP look like they will last more like 20 years.
      EV may not be the ideal vehicle for everyone but they are for the vast majority of people. Once adequate infrastructure develops more, there really is no reason for most people to have an ICE or a PHEV. EVs are great now if you have a place to charge them. It is really a no brainer.

When you are talking to a potential customer and they are tossing up whether to by your proven but outdated technology or the new better tech you have to sell them on "next time". This means buy the old proven product off me today and wait for the new tech to sort out the bugs. There are three to four general kinds of solid state batteries. Maxell of Japan is already producing commercial quantities for the medical industry.
    I don't know when Toyota first announced solid state batteries to be put in production, but the target was definitely 2022 and not any sooner.
    Not sure how CATL can generalize that solid state batteries are not prime time yet when Maxell is proof it is already commercially produced.
    Even if Toyota misses 2027, it will have bipolar LFPs and Li-ion batteries anyway, which are going to be more energy dense that today's battery.
    Toyota is not putting all its cards on solid states. The same way it didn't put all its eggs on BEVs, which in hindsight, was always the best strategy.

However the CATL CEO is consistent, when startup IM Motors with news of a new EV sporting a production-ready solid-state battery, ready to roll off the assembly line. CEO's of legacy companies never talk-down the prospects of new competing disruptive alternatives do they? I mean, it just wouldnt be appropriate to try to stifle innovation, even if it threatened existing technologies
    Oh wait, legacy auto has been doing it for years. And big oil has been doing it for even longer. The list is long, the path is well worn
    So why on earth would anyone think that somehow, traditional lithium battery manufacturers would be any less inclined to follow this established path of protecting their own business???

    Because of CEO's bad mouth, CATL will lost a high potential customer called Toyota.
    CATL CEO's bad mouth is also not stopping Toyota from create batteries. Instead, it pressures Toyota to improving batteries and fight CATL.
