The problem with this management style is the burn out. You need to replace people and it doesn’t mean you can match the folks who leave. You need a balance.
...and focus. Once you pick a direction, you need consistency of effort to push towards the objective goal.
I worked for AMD in the semi custom business unit. Elon’s style was part of the culture amongst the SOC design leaders. Especially the take charge part when a team was stuck. A good SOC lead was on the phone to Lisa Su when we needed server power to run simulations or chip layout as an example, Also if we were slipping due to some low performer, changes were made to the team. That low performer was not outright fired though, Instead he might get dinged on his performance review and get less of a merit increase or bonus payout. Then he’d have to put together a plan to improve his own performance. If he continues to slide, he may be the first to go if there is a reduction in workforce/layoff… Pay for performance and reward stellar work is a good thing. Oh small teams are also used whenever there is a challenge. The best and the brightest are called in as tiger teams to solve any given problem. It is a silicon valley work ethos at its best. Elon just takes to a higher level.
I talked to somebody who worked at Tesla and asked him if he met Elon. He said he hadn't, but if you met Elon it means something had gone horribly wrong.
Yeah… that is BS. A good friend of mine who was a rocket engineer reported directly to musk at SPACEX for 8 years said it was the best work he has ever done in his career. He left after getting married and wanted to start a family. He’s now coasting at GOOGLE working at 25% capacity and getting nearly nothing done. Let that soak in.
Why does he need to leave the greatest job ever to get married and have a family? By definition, the greatest job ever would not require you leave to have a family. I also know a woman who worked at SpaceX and asked her if she met and liked Elon. She met him, but gave no comment on liking him.
Isn’t that awful?
@@michaelfrank2664 What? How the hell do you equate wanting to have a family with job requirements?
Are you just trying to get a reaction?
@@davidnika446 I'm equating a great job with as something you can have and raise a family with at the same time. There is no work life balance at Tesla.
Still too much hero worship. Musk is still mortal. He could still die suddenly or otherwise be sidelined for health reasons.
Even now his superior management style should be studied and understood well enough that others could step in and continue the success of Tesla at any moment. Not to do so would be corporate negligence. I expect this is already being done.
80% of a companies achievements are typically by the square root of the number of employees...
People always try to use this as an example of some widespread incompetence of the other employees. I dont think thats the case. I think its just simply a function of how knowledge and work grow. The people that occupy certain positions are just in the 80% section, you cant have multiple leaders. There are people on my team that have way more knowledge of our internal systems than i do but thats a function of where they're positioned in the organization, not my incompetence.
I think a lot of people who has worked for Elon long enough know they are in a very unique position, one they can thrive when surrounded by highly productive people.
There is no question that this environment is made for very specific people, and bad for those that doesn't match this high ground.
This place is made for people who want to limit break, go over the ceiling imposed by the mainstream in the industry.
replacing elon with jim farley, feels questionable
Very. Herbert Diess would be a much better choice.
@@2cartalkers because he did so well at VW????
@@power2me1 They dumped him becaue he wanted VW to go all in with EV's and the unions didn't like that. He is competent but VW is not.
What a laugh. If you like what a Tesla is, then you know that Elon Musk cannot be replaced (except under dire circumstances).
@@2cartalkers he understood how tesla was ahead but doesn't mean he'd add anything to tesla. he's a legacy trained exec who learned at dying brands.
Andrej said that he left Tesla because he was not doing as much actual hands on AI work as he wanted. He didn’t like being a manager. He didn’t say that he was leaving because he had been working too hard. He is someone who is internally driven to work hard,
he may have not provided the *real* reasons. why believe his claims?
@@wkrp10splayer19 Ah yes, people are lying but I - armchair commenter - know the real truth! What other conspiracy theories do you conjure up?
oooooh yesssss i'm so glad u axed. its so hard to find good new CT's, what with all this aluminium foil in my hat...
There are hundreds of employees at Tesla that have been there for a decade or more. They thrive on challenge and pushing themselves to achieve more.
This is exactly the kind of employee Tesla wants and needs. They would rather hire someone with this type of drive, but burns out in a year, than hire someone who is maybe a great worker (and would stay a decade) but who doesn't push themselves to excel.
More than anything you have to be a self directed worker. If you think you need management permission to do something or make a change then don't hire on to Tesla.... you will be sorely abused of that notion.
If they make Elon leave it will be apple and Steve Jobs part 2….they will beg him to come back
...maybe, but then Elon might realize he can't just trash people on Twitter for no good reason.
Space karen 🤡🚀
How's his 4chan 2.0 working out?
@@AudiTTQuattro2003 just unfollow him
Thanks!
This style of management is only possible if you work with generic technologies for which you find abundant number of people. Lots of industries rely on people which are hard to find, where sourcing people is costly. This kind of micromanagement is in most cases not needed if you hire highly motivated people from good universities. I worked in crazy efficient teams and the management would intervene indeed to remove people blocking a team or to remove bottle necks. But they relied on us specialists to run the project. If Elon constantly wanted to remove people then why did they hire them in the first place? I start to understand why Tesla has these difficulties to scale. It is fine to be an involved manager but you must build up teams that can work independently (self steering teams following company principles) with minimal input. How else can you expand your company?
I think you misunderstand the frequency of Elon's interventions. Eg at Tesla, 140,000 employees at 1,800 locations, you KNOW that Elon, busy with 3 other significant companies, is not droping in on every little issue in every factory or delivery site. My guess is he watches 10 main benchmark goals, and has his second-in-command tell him if any bottleneck threatens those goals, requiring a visit by Elon.
The problem with Elon is a lot of bad X/Twitter stuff, including algorithm trashing which make him look like a very bad person to a lot of potential Tesla customers, add to that the anti Tesla FUD and it very bad for EVs
Exactly. The next generation of people likely to buy his cars all hate him. I’m feeling a level of embarrassment as a Tesla owner.
Or if you don't like the way the company is being run you can leave and start your own company........
SHHH, YOUR PRIVLIDGE IS SHOWING AGAIN
Thank you for the keen insight!
I worked for musk early SpaceX, all that was mentioned is true. I had to work 24 hrs/day, 7days/week sometimes. The deadlines were not realistic. The problem was not the technical part of the work, it was work place harassment and sabotage by others to get elons attention. I saw many good engineers fired for no reason.
Yep. A pattern repeated all too often in Tech history. Stack Rankings anyone?
All documented in isaacson's book. Elon is a tortured genius for sure and as the book makes clear he was very badly abused both by his father and by proxy abusers, people that his father intentionally or unintentionally aligned so that his father made sure his son did not grow up 'weak.' What's disconcerting is that Elon may not have done enough work in psychotherapy to really get past all this. The signature of somebody with a still resonant abuse history is that they tend to be polarizing oftentimes extremely so. And yes this means that most of the polarizing people you know had an unacknowledged and unresolved abuse history.
Unrealistic deadlines are the norm for most companies.
How was their harassment?
You should go to work for the UAW
Mr Musk is a top guy and Tesla team do the good work 👍
...your koolaid is ready, sir.
It is a well know fact that people doint leave companies, they leave managers.
Crazy deadlines are critical… Near-sighted analysts and traders who get disillusioned with Elons predictions don’t understand how he operates.
Sounds like a hell place to work which was my impression as well after reading his biography. The way he cuts corners to save costs is simply dangerous and based on pure luck but what he call his intuition.
Read the Isaacson book. The first half particularly is very revealing.
Most executives in major corporations add constraints and barriers, not remove them as Elon does.
Does Tesla need the same things at this point? Just finishing what they've started seems the biggest need at the moment.
I think, Karpathy was holding back a bit in his opinion. I agree, he must be burnt out, like a lot of software developers.
Every company has a lot of dead wood that should be trimmed back but rarely is.
hehehehe
Your really pumping these out.
So Elon is taking him back and that is his reason for leaving OpenAI (again). Is it a six or a 12 month grace period before he can take that job?
Anyways, good catch from Tesla.
In general I would not recommend to return to a workplace that has burned you down, if there is no change of dynamics. And Karphaty reported to Musk, so there is no dynamics to change.
I had to go look this up because I was not aware that Andre was going back to Tesla. I didn’t see anything saying he was. Is this something you’re making up?
Clock is ticking for him…and for shareholders…smthg needs to change…
Tesla still has a very good image to attract the best talents, once this is over we can expect changes but it seems far away, and only Chinese manufacturer seems to be in the race. The battery race was won by China, which is pretty significant, tells a lot about what we can expect in technology.
...it's starting to have problems attracting customers now, because of Elon.
I'd prefer Tony Aquila to Elon Musk to run Tesla. He makes better product & personnel decisions. Cybertruck's a mess of a product, disposable sedans are going nowhere. Rather than laying off a crew, until Tony Aquila could find company jobs for them within the company, he kept paying them and sent them out to do charity work (a legend in the making). A manager I replaced was like Elon, I never laid anybody off, but doubled the business (in a down market) while reducing the crew by 40 percent.
Goev is going bankrupt
I wonder if Elon would tolerate an employee who spent a whole bunch of his working hours on personal side projects.
That explains the half assed effort solving customers problem
I wish I had the talent to get into Tesla. They're very selective, that's for sure.
People that demand Elon be removed from Tesla CEO should question their own value to existence and ask if their input/their actions are a negative impact to humanity.
Is space karen running X 4chan 2.0 well?
I'd hate to work for Musk. I respect him a great deal though.
If the fact that this guy effectively started the FIRST EV company ever.. and the first successful new car manufacturer in the USA in like 100 years.. AND started the first private rocket company.. successfully.. that landed the first rocket booster ever.. isn't enough to convince you that the guy IS the best CEO, probably on the planet.. then you're clearly blinded by some kind of bias or hate. Sure.. you can dislike some of his personality.. you can dislike whatever the f you want about the man.. the FACT is.. he's an amazingly successful CEO/boss/owner. Don't confuse that shit with his specific tweets about specific topics in the world. Everyone has differing opinions on all kinds of issues.. has NOTHING to do with his ability to run his companies, and his vision for the future and passion to pursue and invent to create that vison.
He did not start Tesla, he bought it. The Space Shuttle landed over a hundred times before Musk even started Spacex. His specific tweets absolutely have to do with his ability to run companies. He is the marketing department and he is chasing off huge numbers of his customers.
Tesla is clearly lead by engineers and technicians while Ford and GM are lead by the accountants and marketing department.
GM is lead by an over Promiser and an Underachiever, maybe you know Who!
As much as some of the things Elon does and says really pisses me off. I'd sell my shares in the blink of an eye if he was ever forced out. Forcing him out would be about as smart as when they pushed Steve Jobs out. Huge mistake!!
You should talk about people critical of Elon Musk being banned off Tesla subreddits. There have been mass bannings and quite the drama.
Everyone talking about the Cyberopolis launch best news this year.
I agree. Elon musk is too focused on twitter I can’t believe I used to admire this guy. Only a new ceo will make me buy Tesla stock
So Musk has invited people to a meeting & then saying to them if you dont need to be here leave.
Replace Elon is something easy to say AFTER he led Tesla through production hell and back, having revolutionized the auto industry and built a company from nothing to half a trillion dollars. Yeah, NOW he's not a good CEO. Replace him with a nicer guy, see what happens.
Replacing Elon would make the stock drop , but I would fill that gap pretty quickly since I’m tired of Elon. I need someone smarter as CEO. Elon can keep posting his weird conspiracies on twitter.
Elon is Unique and Tesla wouldnt be as streamlined without his way of managing the company. Hi Sam hope ya have a great weekend!!!
Thanks to California, liberals and fed gov subsidies 🙄
Why work when you have your stock options come due.
For all of the people that actually praises Elon Musk, I can't help but wonder how many of them can actually survive for more than 1 year under his direct leadership.
I also think that if that karpathy guy tells you what he sees Elon doing you should listen. I can absolutely see how other companies both hire people easily and dont cut them immediately. If i had to guess id say Elons mindset around be very restrictive on hiring is not purely wasting money but also on not wanting to hire someone and find out they dont need them and fire them, because that kind of sucks. Doesnt mean you dont do it, but having a strict policy on bringing people is valuable in multiple ways. I also think companies are not nearly as aggressive as they need to be in firing people, whether thats because they person isnt performing well or the company simply miscalculated their need for that position.
Removing Elon from any of his businesses is like removing Einstein from relativity.
We definitely need to keep the baby, just would be nice to have slightly smarter bathwater...
Do not underestimate the power of getting in early. If you are not in Cyberopolis now, you are lagging behind.
Yes it is time to fire Elon
Can't imagine Tesla without Musk, Tesla is Musk
Sam. Love you man. But you could go straight to the point, not say it in multiple ways and cut these videos in half.
Karpathy took a golden parachute with speech restrictions, then Elon scrapped all his work, switching from programming to AI.
❤❤❤
Nice take on elon in running tesla I'm pretty sure the boy is part cyborg and the biggie is space strings.

Without Elon Tesla will turn into another boring car company. Thanks to him, Tesla provides entertainment on annual basis.
He’s a true Libertarian! Love ya Elon!!
You can achieve everything he does without being a Libertarian...
he is a magat
Libertarians are social liberals which space karen is not.
Without Elon, there is no Tesla.
"Tesla reportedly to cut more than 10% of staff in face of profit concerns". I'm sure the Viking will call this a lie.
Naw, everything's wonderful at Tesla. And I don't think you could have found a more positivley biased person than this guy Andrej Karpathy.
Apple fired Steve Jobs and wound up with Gil Amelio. Tesla ditching Musk would be like a patient having his brain removed.
TESLA WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT MUSK. HE SHOULD GET CREDIT FOR WHAT HE DID, BUT HE IS DOING WAY MORE HARM THAN GOOD RIGHT NOW.
BTC is good but it is better to be early in projects. Catch presale projects like Cyberopolis for max gains
Get rid of Elon would be like apple getting rid of Steve Jobs…
Elon is the Zefram Cochrane of the 21st century.
when sam gets a tesla bot......sam will be fired.
Why not learn from him? Is it unreasonable for shareholders to hold management of companies they are invested in to the same standard? Just a question. Some people - no names - in the "community" will accept and make excuses for anything. That is not useful, and based on your video, I don't think Elon would respect it. Are you more likely to achieve your goals doing that, or by looking for excellence?
Elon is the humen
Haste Makes Waste; this explains the multiple problems with Tesla vehicles over the years, and the poor decisions to remove hardware such as radar and parking sensors before the replacement vision software could replicate those functions. The contemplative and thorough employees would be fired because they lack the speed of the slap-it-on and fix it later types.

...it's called a long con. Announce the next great thing every time something fails to deliver.
That style of management may sound great, but it creates a toxic environment and it tends to force workers to take shortcuts, which is why Tesla is known for low quality workmanship.
Musk is a brilliant if annoying at times one off.
Musk’s group of companies needs to be broken up. Musk is losing the ability to control and concentrate on core issues?
Explain fsd, starship, neurolink, production, starlink, energy storage?
@@luci8338 FSD is a failure. Starship is a failure, Neurolink is proven to kill monkeys, production of more than they can sell, starlink is not scalable, energy storage is not making any profit because they are just reselling CATL batteries and CATL has a directly competing product.
Good one Sam! It seems Elon has done more in the short time he ran Tesla vs Legacy auto in over 100 years!
Where is Herbert Diess when you need him?
The fact that andrej left before FSD was finished lets me know it not happening any time soon. everyone that i know from Tesla that seemed important has left. of course, I just cannot follow tesla closely anymore. its hard to get news about tesla now that musk is so into politics. takes too long to filter through all the drama he causes.

Sounds a lot like Korean-style management - the only difference is that they have a superstar at the helm.
I wish Tesla would get to the point where it is willing to ask customers what they want instead of asking Elon what he wants to sell us. Letting the leaders pick the products and features is exactly what Radio Shack did and it worked for many years until it didn't.
This is one of the reasons why the USA is declining. Tall poppy syndrome. Success is punished. Failure is rewarded and protected.
