    The problem with this management style is the burn out. You need to replace people and it doesn’t mean you can match the folks who leave. You need a balance.

    I worked for AMD in the semi custom business unit. Elon’s style was part of the culture amongst the SOC design leaders. Especially the take charge part when a team was stuck. A good SOC lead was on the phone to Lisa Su when we needed server power to run simulations or chip layout as an example, Also if we were slipping due to some low performer, changes were made to the team. That low performer was not outright fired though, Instead he might get dinged on his performance review and get less of a merit increase or bonus payout. Then he’d have to put together a plan to improve his own performance. If he continues to slide, he may be the first to go if there is a reduction in workforce/layoff… Pay for performance and reward stellar work is a good thing. Oh small teams are also used whenever there is a challenge. The best and the brightest are called in as tiger teams to solve any given problem. It is a silicon valley work ethos at its best. Elon just takes to a higher level.

      Yeah… that is BS. A good friend of mine who was a rocket engineer reported directly to musk at SPACEX for 8 years said it was the best work he has ever done in his career. Why does he need to leave the greatest job ever to get married and have a family? By definition, the greatest job ever would not require you leave to have a family. Still too much hero worship. Musk is still mortal. He could still die suddenly or otherwise be sidelined for health reasons.
    Even now his superior management style should be studied and understood well enough that others could step in and continue the success of Tesla at any moment. Not to do so would be corporate negligence. I expect this is already being done.

      People always try to use this as an example of some widespread incompetence of the other employees. I dont think thats the case. I think its just simply a function of how knowledge and work grow. The people that occupy certain positions are just in the 80% section, you cant have multiple leaders. There are people on my team that have way more knowledge of our internal systems than i do but thats a function of where they're positioned in the organization, not my incompetence.

    I think a lot of people who has worked for Elon long enough know they are in a very unique position, one they can thrive when surrounded by highly productive people.
    There is no question that this environment is made for very specific people, and bad for those that doesn't match this high ground.
    This place is made for people who want to limit break, go over the ceiling imposed by the mainstream in the industry.

    There are hundreds of employees at Tesla that have been there for a decade or more. They thrive on challenge and pushing themselves to achieve more.
    This is exactly the kind of employee Tesla wants and needs. They would rather hire someone with this type of drive, but burns out in a year, than hire someone who is maybe a great worker (and would stay a decade) but who doesn't push themselves to excel.
    More than anything you have to be a self directed worker. If you think you need management permission to do something or make a change then don't hire on to Tesla.... you will be sorely abused of that notion.

    This style of management is only possible if you work with generic technologies for which you find abundant number of people. Lots of industries rely on people which are hard to find, where sourcing people is costly. This kind of micromanagement is in most cases not needed if you hire highly motivated people from good universities. I worked in crazy efficient teams and the management would intervene indeed to remove people blocking a team or to remove bottle necks. But they relied on us specialists to run the project. If Elon constantly wanted to remove people then why did they hire them in the first place? I start to understand why Tesla has these difficulties to scale. It is fine to be an involved manager but you must build up teams that can work independently (self steering teams following company principles) with minimal input. How else can you expand your company?

    • @lengould9262
      @lengould9262 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think you misunderstand the frequency of Elon's interventions. Eg at Tesla, 140,000 employees at 1,800 locations, you KNOW that Elon, busy with 3 other significant companies, is not droping in on every little issue in every factory or delivery site. My guess is he watches 10 main benchmark goals, and has his second-in-command tell him if any bottleneck threatens those goals, requiring a visit by Elon.

      All documented in isaacson's book. Elon is a tortured genius for sure and as the book makes clear he was very badly abused both by his father and by proxy abusers, people that his father intentionally or unintentionally aligned so that his father made sure his son did not grow up 'weak.' What's disconcerting is that Elon may not have done enough work in psychotherapy to really get past all this. The signature of somebody with a still resonant abuse history is that they tend to be polarizing oftentimes extremely so. And yes this means that most of the polarizing people you know had an unacknowledged and unresolved abuse history.

    I'd prefer Tony Aquila to Elon Musk to run Tesla. He makes better product & personnel decisions. Cybertruck's a mess of a product, disposable sedans are going nowhere. Rather than laying off a crew, until Tony Aquila could find company jobs for them within the company, he kept paying them and sent them out to do charity work (a legend in the making). A manager I replaced was like Elon, I never laid anybody off, but doubled the business (in a down market) while reducing the crew by 40 percent.

If i had to guess id say Elons mindset around be very restrictive on hiring is not purely wasting money but also on not wanting to hire someone and find out they dont need them and fire them, because that kind of sucks. Doesnt mean you dont do it, but having a strict policy on bringing people is valuable in multiple ways. I also think companies are not nearly as aggressive as they need to be in firing people, whether thats because they person isnt performing well or the company simply miscalculated their need for that position.
