    I wonder what pressure it’s supposed to be at. My scanner says the fuel pressure sensor is reading well over 500 psi and sometimes drops to like 20 while in the middle of a turn. Thought it was the injectors at first but there’s a tiny bit of fuel behind the butterfly in the throttle body. Im gonna change the rail and tank pressure sensors I guess 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a port to check the low pressure. It will be 55 to 60 psi. The high pressure varies at idle bt should be in the 500 psi range. If you pull the high pressure pump, you can check for a bad roller or bad cam lobe. Also it may be leaking internally. The oil will be contaminated with fuel, too. The fuel trims will max negative trying to decrease fuel because of the extra fuel in the pvc.

    first of all, thank you.. this video is awesome..
    secondly, pretty sure a pump is about to go out in mine. It sputters and reduces fuel intake gradually (not a stall or surging but restricted slowly) and at random times...(some right off the crank, others 50miles away) but when I power down and wait for 5 mins I can make it further... not sure if it's a clog from the filter and the power down stops the draw of fuel and the sediment drops, or the key turn is shocking the motor and freeing it up again but after a power down I drive off. again, sometimes 30 seconds sometimes 30 mins, repeat
    was thinking it was the low pressure pump since it was gradually cutting off and not stalling but before I buy a pressure gauge just thought I would see what you thought... if you would??
    P.S I thought maybe it was a clog of sediment because my fuel tank has a crack in it and I would imagine have debris from the suction

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first thing to check is if the tank is venting properly. The easiest way to do that is to loosen the has cap and drive it to duplicate the problem. If it still does it then that's not it. Also if you have a scanner you can look at the tank pressure or vacuum status. If you think you have bad fuel you could take a sample of fuel from the test port. If your model does not have a test port you can remove the pressure sensor and get it there. Also if you have a scanner you can monitor the high pressure to determine if it drops when the problems occur. Having a crack in the tank is going to be a problem until it gets replaced or repaired.

      thank you so much for the reply... The tank has been cracked for probably 4 years now no problems until three days ago, I just keep it at half instead of filling up .. I will try to replicate it with the gas cap off to eliminate it anyways.. shouldn't be the fuel, run it close to bone dry and been to two gas stations since the problem started.. so I'm thinking mechanical.. Haven't got a scanner yet because I want a good one. The only one I have access to shows hard codes.. Tomorrow my plan is to try the gas cap thing, then buy a pressure gauge and check for any errors.. hopefully I will know more

    Thank you Sir for an excellent video! Would a P0442 code indicate failure of this sensor or just that a leak has been detected from this sensor? I'm struggling to narrow this down. I'm about to order a new gas cap and this sensor as well as the fuel injector pressure sensor because the car also threw a P0191 very shortly after throwing the P0442 with the engine shuddering at idle (drive or neutral) and getting a DIC message "Service Stabilitrak - Engine Power is Reduced" on a 2012 Camaro V6. It's intermittent though. Please let me know your thoughts. You seem very knowledgeable indeed.

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  ปีที่แล้ว

      P0442 is a small leak, check the gasket on the gas cap. If you have a smoke machine you can smoke the evap system, albeit a small leak will be difficult to find. The purge solenoid need to be checked too. Either replace it or swap it with a known good one from a salvage yard. It's a common fail point.
      The stabilitrak will disable if it is running poorly. It could also be a separate problem like a bad ground, bad battery, bad battery connection. Sorry for the edit I did not read your question throughly.

    • @ninetynate
      @ninetynate ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chriskolar I really appreciate the guidance on the P0442. The gasket on the gas cap looks okay but I'm going to replace it anyway. I will buy a new purge solenoid as well and see if either fixes it. Thanks for the plan of attack on the common failure point - now that's what I was looking for!
      So for my P0191 - interesting you say bad battery - my battery was bad when I bought the car about a year ago, but I reconditioned it using a battery charger and even a local auto parts store tested it today and confirmed it is a good battery. But it wasn't always good, had trouble starting and numerous shops told me it had to be replaced initially not after the reconditioning and it is original, so ~11 years old so would it still cause these weird electrical problems?
      Also since the P0191 - "Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor 'A' Circuit Range/Performance.” is thrown should I just replace this sensor and see as it got thrown after the car shuddered at idle?

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  ปีที่แล้ว

      @ninetynate I would wait till you get the battery and the evap code fixed. Check all grounds and connections. Cycle them wiggle the wires clean the terminals. Do them one at a time and test for results. When does the code set? Immediately or after a drive cycle? Measure voltage drops across the battery cables to check the cables for excessive drops. The battery cables can get messed up and cause all kinds of problems. Is the battery properly secured with the original hold down?

    • @ninetynate
      @ninetynate ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi@@chriskolar - quick update - I replaced the battery, gas cap (oem), purge solenoid valve (oem). The P0191 went away after disconnecting the battery. The car ran strong for two drive cycles and then started shaking and stumbling and almost stalled out but threw the P0191 code again with the 'Engine Power is Reduced' DIC. Now it takes longer to crank and is in permanent limp mode that won't go away even after restarting. P0191 is here to stay. The battery is secure no voltage drops. I'm reading live data on the OBD2 scanner app. I went to a local mechanic shop and explained this and they said a vacuum leak wouldn't cause P0191 is that accurate? Should I go ahead and replace the fuel rail pressure sensor to rule it out?

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  ปีที่แล้ว

      @ninetynate before replacing the part you need to check the low pressure and high pressure. This can be done with a scanner. Select the two different fuel pressures and view them on a graph
      The graph will give you a number for the lowest pressure and highest pressure. If it is out of range then you can start considering replacing parts. The low pressure can be checked easily at the low pressure port on the passenger side rear engine area. With a fuel pressure test gage. The high pressure is viewed on the scanner only.

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, what type of help do you need. Fuel rail pressure low can be from a leaking injector, faulty in tank pump, and faulty high pressure pump. A proper scanner would get you the high and low pressures. You would need a tech2 to go any further, injector duty cycle, testing, resistance, etc.

    • @chriskolar

      It's a great idea to release the pressure at the shrader valve test port under the hood. Loosening it slowly with a rag wrapped around it is a option too.

      You have to check the low pressure pump first. There is a test port under the hood at the rear of the engine. Low pressure would be a number less than 58 psi.

    My code is P 0496. What would anyone recommend checking first. Also. What should the fuel pressure sensor read when on the code reader. When I test it with a code reader I get some numbers ending in v, h20, mpa, what should the normal numbers be running correctly ?

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      P0496 is purge valve. The pressure sensor goes to the pump control module to give signal so the module can regulate the pump. I am not getting clear info on the other question. A scanner will give the high pressure numbers in live data. This also depends on which scanner you use. A Tech2 can do everything including check the values of the pressure sensor thru the pump module. I have a Autel and it a cheap one, does not do everything.

    Would this component cause the vehicle to not go over 50mph as it does on my 2013 RS?

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have a code for it? It measures the fuel pressure from the in tank low pressure pump. The fuel pump module modulates the power to the pump. If the fuel pressure is too low, there can be all kinds of problems.

      No. It had a bunch of codes related to low fuel pressure. In retrospect, I would rather have just replaced the in tank pump. That is what eventually happened. I put a pump from oriley in. It only lasted 6 months? Two pumps later and I am ready to try a A/C Delco. I do have a video on installing the pump via a access hole under seat.

    What’s the name of the part that turned off your fuel pressure

    • @chriskolar
      @chriskolar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what you are trying to do is release the fuel pressure. There is a small valve in the fuel line before it gets to the high pressure pump. You can release the pressure there. It called a Schrader valve.
