I have a 2tb model no-heatsink wd-black sn-850 in my laptop. I7 11th gen 16gb ram and RTX 3050ti and I love it. The drive is super responsive and only gives minor heat issues when in unsuitable conditions, like on my lap in bed for example. I considered the heatsink model but I have jet engine fans to accommodate the graphics card.
Great video! Sadly I think I’m going to resort to deleting games for the foreseeable future until the SSDs get a little cheaper! Lol. I’d probably want to get at least a 2TB so (hopefully) I won’t need to replace it anytime soon.
Finally upgraded my ssd in PS5. WDSN 850x and it is faster than the original drive and more space. Got it for $179.99 for 2tb on western dig on black Friday. Could not be happier as amazon was $229.99 as next lowest competition. And it literally took 2 minutes to install by hand into PS5. If you know how to pop plates off lol.
Just picked one of these up for delivery tomorrow, very good vid here and informative. From what I've heard this is pretty much the recommended SSD by Marc Cerny who helped develop the ps5 too
what speed did you get out of the ssd out of the box? after some negative reviews on amazon ive been researching how to update the firmware to take advantage of almost the full 7K read.
no you have to use the official xbox drives that are made in partnership with seagate and Microsoft for the Xbox. They have their own special 1tb drives. Regular NVME SSDs will not work with the xbox series S/X as they have custom ones made again as I said in partnership with xbox and seagate or whoever.
Sorry for this most likely super obvious question, but do I transfer the data to an external drive first, then install the SSD (replace the old??), and finally transfer over the saved data from the external drive to the new SSD??
Its not about will the drive work. The drive does not need to be vetted with some sort of logo that it is PS5 compatible. Theoretically any gen 4 pcie nvme SSD will work with the system but make sure it is gen 4, the speed recommended by sony, and that the storage you want for the drive 2TB is compatible with the PS5 I.E. Some larger drives that are 4 or 8 tb may not work so you need to check and see if sony allows you to use those sizes of drive and so on. Just check sonys official spec recommendations for this and make sure everything you are getting falls under it. Also make sure the headspreader on the NVME SSD you get fits under that top plastic cover. If it doesn't its not the end of the world you just won't be able to screw it back on to cover up the slot where the SSD plugs in.
Very well put together video, informative and useful I'll be checking this again once I actually manage to get a PS5. Is there any alternative to WD_Black and can you use it on the Xbox Series X/S.
Xbox has proprietary memory cards and the Wd black sn850 is probably the best choice. The other ones I see are more expensive even sometimes. Mark cerny chose it to. So it cant be bad. Get a heatsink
While lower and slower speed drives will work with the system that are PCI-E Gen 4 you really want to make sure you are following the speed spec listed by sony on this one guy. Even if it costs more don't cheap out on the drive. They have the speed spec there for a reason so that later on down the line when you have a 1st gen non pro ps5 that game load times are still the same when stuff gets more advanced graphically 8 years down the line. The last generation lasted 8 years and if this one lasts the same amount of time you're going to want that speed to make sure the PS5 1st gen systems are able to load the demanding games of 8 years from now. The developers aren't going to keep games the same as they are today 8 years from now as they want to push every bit of performance out of the system as they can and push it to the limits while still meeting the requirements for their games to run at set by sony so you're going to want to follow them on this one and get the right speed spec of drive listed by them to ensure your console runs smooth years down the line. *Edit* also to those that are complaining about the price of the SSD this is actually a good thing that Sony has this SSD in their system and they allow you to put your own SSD into the console hopefully driving down the price of these for some a somewhat costly price to pay to expand their storage on their systems.
Thanks, a year later ( today) i was able to upgrade my Ps5 storage, i think this is a most, i ran out of the 667gb thats left on the ps5 storage pretty quickly, i only have 4 ps5 installed in ps5 got 10 more ps4 games but in a separate extended hard drive.
