Grant you said to chip with the shaft straight up and down but you were clearly leaning the shaft forward slightly on all your shots. This is the proper technique as it greatly increases the chances of a solid strike by lowering the leading edge. A high leading edge can result in the deadly bladed shot! Another important point you might consider adding is reading the lie. How the ball lies in the grass is critical to choosing the best club and shot type to play! Thanks Grant.
Practice sessions would really be the key. Hit a good amount of balls to have consistency when your hitting. Feel plays abig role, clock system also helps to know how far back you wind up on your backswing.
Grant, we could really use a pitch-shot video! I can't tell you how many times I'm 50 yards out (up to 70 yards) and need a better idea of club selection and shot shape. Too many times I fall short or go long of the pin. This video was great and much appreciated!
I was struggling with inside 70 yards as well and what helped me was practicing half swings with a sand wedge and pitching wedge and seeing how far they would go. My half swing sand wedge goes exactly 50 yards and my half swing pitching wedge goes exactly 70 yards. You could also do the same thing for a half swing on a 60°
@@jpdst29have you ever tried full upswing then let the club just drop on the down to hit that 70 under approach? I use my pitching wedge from everything to 120 and below
Grant- really enjoy your teaching channel. Just checked it the other day for iron swing tutorials and was bummed to see you didn’t have any! Would love to see Beginner, Intermediate, and advanced iron tutorials 🙏
Great information Grant. I go by more flight, less roll ise higher lofted. Less flight and more roll, lower lofted. I am a high handicap, but chipping is one thing I am actually decent at. I do have a 60, but barely use it unless i need a high shot and just have the ball stop. Keep it up!! Live the channel.
Grant your TEMPO is amazing. Short or long shots it doesn't change. Also great tips that will definitely help my short game. Thanks brother, keep them coming.
I carry 48, 54 bent to 53, and 58 degree wedges. I recent tried chipping those more bump and run type chips with my 48 and I think it’s the right way to go. This video helped cement that with me, just got to practice it now!
Thank you for all you do teaching and also entertaining! I watch every single teaching video and also golf video. It’s awesome to see you grow and also to not be afraid to talk about your faith. God bless and excited to see where you continue to go 😁
Grant is really the best teacher on TH-cam, at least for me, Need to make more videos, everytime I watch your teaching videos I literally take 2-5 strokes off my game
Grant - In Secrets of the Short Game, Phil recommends a more forward ball position. I'm like you and always do a more mid/back ball position. Im curious if you think this is personal preference as to what works better for each golfer, or if there is a reason to choose one or the other? I'm trying to shift to a more forward position like Phil because he makes it seem so simple but its been a process to change my feel! Thanks!
Another great video! Just curious if you could ever do another chipping video talking about the various techniques out there and dispelling myths. Most instructors agree weight forward and stand closer to the ball. But the differences come in with face open vs closed and ball position. My swing instructor and even Phil Mickelson teach ball more towards the back, face closed, and a little more shaft lean. You teach ball center, more neutral shaft, and face slightly open. Any clarifying thoughts would be great!
I am terrible at golf, but my observation is that old school is 7 or 8 iron w closed face and shaft lean fwd. New school is neutral, wedge or more loft w open face and a swipe. Your mileage may vary.
Great video! Do you happen to have any that teach how to put spin on the ball? I am trying to get the ball to stop from say 7/8/9 irons instead of it rolling off the back of the green.
Hey grant. Nice video. One thing you didn’t mention was about using the bounce on the wedge. I learned this from a Padraig Harrington video. You technically are trying to hit the ground before the golf ball when chipping and this has made my chipping so much better and really made it click in my head about how it’s supposed to be done. Keep up the good work.
I’m glad you look at it like that it seems like most people just use 60 all the time, I don’t have a 50 I have a 52 but I generally use it all the time chipping. I feel I have more control, now if I can get my irons to come down from space I’ll be alright lol
Nice video! That downhill chip you could’ve definitely played slightly closer to the hole if ball position was a bit more forward and some clippy added bounce contact, I find ball Position as far back as you had it out of the light rough delivers glancing blow with not enough spin to stop from that distance running away from.
Nice job, Grant. I’d like to see more graphics in your videos. As an example, when reviewing your 3 take aways from your lesson, have a graphic showing this.
Great stuff, this my biggest problem area.Dont like watching instructional videos usually bc I get in my head but I’ve picked up alot from watching your game. We have similar build so if I see you do something it tends to work for me. Love this vid would even like a more in depth look where your striking the ball and pace etc.Great stuff as always
to fix my slice, i now line up further away from the ball, with the ball on my left toe. but the key to fixing my slice was keeping my hips hinged so i was leaned more over the ball rather than standing very straight up
Quick ? I'm just gettin into the game, about to buy my first real wedge, only have my P wedge an S Wedge with my set of Callaway X20s I got fitted for 14 years ago but they just been sitting in the garage waitin for me to get into the game, anyway I wanna know if I should go with the 60 degree or maybe go with the 58 so I have the less loft for like when u say use the 50 but then I could open the 58 up to give me close to what the 60 would, just curious what u would suggest, thanks Bro 🤙🏽
Any advice for curing the "yips" with chipping, Grant? I have lost confidence and when that happens I tend to try to help the ball up at the last second and end up chunking or blading it. I need to keep the swing tempo more even.
You should check out Micah’s video with JT on chipping. Ive had the chipping yips for about 2 years until I watched that video. Not completely cured but it was a good starting point for me. Hope it helps you too. Cheers
I think going up with the ball instead of down is massively underrated. Learning how to go up and control a ball’s distance and spin has provided more tap ins then chipping low. Maybe just cuz I’m really good at it but anyways.. I’m definitely better going up than keeping it down. Even with 50-60 degree clubs. Opening the face and using the bounce
Grant has two chipping videos wherein one he promotes the ball in the middle of his stance to avoid chunk shots and then this video where he is clearly putting the ball in the back of his stance.
Can you do a short video JUST on technique? I set up just like you and other coaches explain to and it just feels so unnatural. Should we hit down on the ball like an iron? Scoop a little. Make a “putting stroke”? Does your take away stay the same? Need real help. By far the worst part of my game…. Love your channel. Vibes are high 😀
Interesting so many people find iron bump and runs so much easier. I am a mid teens handicap but I am wayyyy more consistent and have better distance control chipping with my high lofted wedges
I was taught by my pro to basically do a bump and run type shot with high lofted clubs by delofting them, handle forward. It is pretty predictable and contact is pretty good. It basically hops once and then rolls like a putt. I get comments from guys with less than half my handicap say I’m really good at getting up and down. I changed to this technique relatively recently so I know it should only get better with practice. You might consider trying it out, since you can use the same club you have been using. Basically ball is at the right shoulder with weight left, handle at left pocket. Maintain weight and shaft lean during swing with softish hands. Stop your follow through at a singular point, but make sure you are turning your body through to the finish. Something to try, but if what you are doing is already great then keep refining it.
Grant your way better at golf than me but why don’t you teach the toe down method where you get the heel off the ground shut the face of your club choke up on it and basically take a putting stroke at it. Pro’s do it. It takes the hands out of it. Watch Bryson chip. He can show you the way to be better than you already are.
I use my 8 iron 30-40 yards out and my 9 iron 20 yards and in. I use a simply putting motion and I get it pin high 90% of the time. I use a 58 if I need a flop shot but rarely use it.
Hopefully you all learn something in this video! Chipping can be very difficult
Your comments are throwaway. Show some actual care for the average golfer.
FYI maybe talk about ball position
Practice sessions would really be the key. Hit a good amount of balls to have consistency when your hitting. Feel plays abig role, clock system also helps to know how far back you wind up on your backswing.

@@jpdst29 tnx for the reminder!
Let the club do the work when pitching. Standard full swing height, but let the club drop onto the ball with ease.

Depends how far you are from green and fringe and with smaller greens many of ours play on a 54 does most of the job.
Totally missed what the Arkos(?) was doing for you there. But the video was rock solid good info.
would it be better to have a 56 delofted to make it come in hotter and role out more? 😅 or should I go and practice with a 52 for the longer shots?
Toe-down putt-chip would likely work well for that difficult 60-shot.
Might seem too basic, but a lesson on what each arm should be doing and when on both iron and driver.
Yessir, Grant.
Please do a video of how to deal with different lies in the rough. As well as how you try and determine what the ball will do coming out of the rough.
The lesson you gave Andres Lang was a great one... I would also expand on that lesson on this channel
