    I just purchased one of these for my semi truck. I always thought I had to get an APU to have heat, which was quoted $17000 to me, or a German one which is at least a 1000 online. I found this after a good bit of research and your videos along with others have given me confidence in them too. I wish I'd found them 2 years ago when I lived in my semi truck and didn't have to rough it out in a sleeping bag at night cause I didn't wanna idle the truck.

    Probably the best startup video on this particular diesel heater controller (a very common one) that I've ever seen, and possibly all you'll ever need. The written instructions for these controllers are usually woeful, if you actually get any, but this covers the basics really well in an easy to understand way with good camera work, not too long, and no distracting music. Great job, well done!

    One tip: Make sure you dont leave the screen on the whole time or it will go dim very quickly. So dim you cannot read the screen. Either unplug the controller or put a switch in the power wire to the unit when the screen is not in use.

    • @Shepherd4now

      The unit continues to function even without the screen? And is there really no way to shut it off through the buttons?

    Thanks for the tips. Like your suggestion. I removed the fuel hose from the bottom, lifted it up to the pump, got 1/4” ID hose about 18” with little in diesel. Inserted it to hose and feed the diesel until it filled the hose. A little tapping to remove all the air bubbles out. Since it is 18” I was able to route it back to all the holes back to the bottom. Without any air bubbles with a little spill, I inserted it back to the bottom fuel inlet. I just pressed ON and without priming, it just start right up. Cranked it at 5 you can see little bubbles being pushed in to the bottom until there was no more. That was a painless start up. Thanks again.

    Using soft vinyl hose from pump to heater is bad, the hose expands with every pulse meaning fuel delivery into the chamber is weak - it can cause the heater to not even start. Use 2mm id hard hose. Always make sure the pump is from 45 degrees to vertical, and the hose from pump to heater travels upwards only. No kinks or loops. The air bubbles are formed in the pump and must be able to be pushed through in the 2mm hose. The larger hose allows the fuel pulse to slip past the air bubble allowing large air bubbles to form and stop the heater.

    I'm working on an Arduino program to switch the digital wireless remote on and off with a home thermostat. If I can get it right it will be 100% better than the factory controller for my application which is actually a non battery powered tiny home, and it's running off a power supply which is turned up to 13.5V

    • @ppainterco

      Matt Dudley - I was watching this thinking about a python app on a RaspberryPi, but arduino would fit the bill.

    • @mattdudley3789
      @mattdudley3789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ppainterco yup, I have it working on a $7 clone, and a $3 dual relay module. I borrowed code from one of the basic sketches in the Arduino IDE. I opted to buy a manual dial control with the on/ off buttons as it was more logical to work with rather than the wireless remote. I put everything in a wooden project/ jewelry type gift box amd mounted the home thermostat to the face of the box

    • @ppainterco
      @ppainterco 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Dudley Awesome! Have you published a HOW-TO? I’d love to read it and try it.
      The biggest issue that I see with these Chinese diesel heaters is the lack of good instructions, or instructions at all, Bypassing the controller would advance this quite a bit.
      The second issue is that while they have a CE rating, none of them are UL rated, so there is a safety risk, but they seem simple enough to counter the safety question since the combustion is all isolated to the outside.

    • @mattdudley3789
      @mattdudley3789 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ppainterco I have not, done a tutorial. but I could provide the code used. The code is just the "button" sketch from the Arduino IDE modified to switch either one LED or another LED on depending on if a button is pressed. The button is the thermostat, and the LED's are the relays. The relays just close jumper wires I soldered to the micro switch terminals inside the dial/ on off controller.. I even copied the basic wiring schematic from the Button tutorial using a half length bread board. An Arduino Uno or clone, dual relay module and a 10k resistor are all that is needed to make it operate.. I got the idea on 'jumping' the remote and manual controller from a youtube video where a guy wired them to a GSM receiver. I replaced the GSM receiver with the Arduino clone setup
      This heater has been installed for almost a month without the thermostat control working well. I was worried about the LED power supply failing but it works. I also took a new unused upright 20 gallon air tank I had on hand and converted it into a diesel tank. Also. 3/16" brake line works for fuel transfer. I used some nicopp line that I had on hand

I wish there was a "rating" for videos (this would rate 10 smile) so I did not have to watch all the thick head videos where either the volume was too low or else they had no clue themselves haha. So now I’m off and running. Mine is still at bench test stage too, I don’t want to start hacking into my van until I’m confident the heater is suitable. My big concern is the exhaust pipe temperature, I’m looking at lagging the pipe with insulation and also mounting the unit on a non combustible material. The supplied tank is crappy too, I’m looking at a small outboard fuel tank and utilising the quick connect fitting to facilitate filling. This will mean I can just sit the tank in the front boot. That is impressive considering this was the 5kw version. He wants to use it in his ice house, so I just ordered the 8kw for the shop. Cant wait. Oh, a side note make sure you have a really good battery, otherwise it just keeps trying to start over and over...

      I went for the gold and just got an 8kw. If you go into the admin menu with code 1688 you can turn the 5kw up to about the same output as the 8kw. The default HZ on my 8kw is 5.5 max 1.2 min. You can even play with fan speed which if you get too low will over heat the unit. I also used a 12v 20 amp $25 power supply from ebay to run mine. Only warms the PS up slightly when the glow plug fires. My total cost for both was $205

Great video seeing as the instructuon book is nearly useless - it translate words for you cmprehend correct utilization in operate of machine for not making space cold!! - I'm sure that makes the same level of sense if you're familiar with the manual. So you mention a forum? Could you tell me how I find and join it please (or anyone else out there who knows) just for future reference for error codes etc.

    I can't set the clock or timer on mine. It's only three buttons on the LCD display - up, down & on/off. When I cycle the display around to the clock, the < > buttons alter the permanent temp display above the clock. Holding on/off down, just turns the heater on. Oh well, at least the heater works.

    • @wesschimpf5155
      @wesschimpf5155 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@overlordone1246 My best guess is no, it doesn't relate back to Celsius. Hz stands for 2 things, Hertz, which is a unit of frequency. I don't think it relates here. It also stands for Habitable zone, which is probable what they were going for. The higher the number, the more habitable it is. Like I said, my best guess. CHEERS!

      HZ is the pump speed. You can adjust it, so pump speed should relate to the speed of the fan/heat output in operation.

    These controllers are £12 on ebay and not worth repairing but the backlight on mine has virtually gone out. I don't know that I've inadvertantly dimmed it or even if that is possible. Seems more likely the LEDs have been destroyed by the peak voltage from my solar panels via the battery charger hitting 14.6V on sunny days. The manufacturer of these controllers state the importance of not exceeding (I recall around) 12.5V (on the one I have - I note there are 24v units available). These 3 wire devices I assume control a relay in the heater itself that handles the 9 amp current to the glow plug. I noticed a 3 Volt drop at start up and shutdown as the glow plug heats the chamber to ensure combustion is complete thus avoiding carbon build up. What I plan to do is use an 8V-18V voltage inverter I have lying around to step voltage up to 19V then use a bucky inverter to drop down to a steady 12V on the back of the controller so it will ensure consistant 12V in all weather (cold, winter batteries at 11.6V through summer 14.6V peak) to save the backlight at least.

    • @tonytca9439
      @tonytca9439 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its certainly not a common fault for the backlight to blow on these considering the 1000's of RV solar installations. 3 volt drop does sound a bit too much might have to beef up your wiring however the unit has hi low voltage sensing and will shut down if it goes out of spec. So if it works its in spec. My solar also can hit 14.8v for a few minutes as it ends the bulk fast charge before going back to 14.2 and the only thing it does sometimes is trip my inverter on over volts if there is no load. I personally wouldn't worry about using buck and boost cos if they blow you can end up with a much bigger problem and you lose the battery volt monitor.

    • @niv8880
      @niv8880 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonytca9439 Sorry my typo, 0.3V drop, e.g. 12.2 to 11.9 - its quite a heavy duty "ring main" that is tapped off where necessary.
      I'm waiting for a replacement. The odd thing is its not the backlight, when I operated mine with the cover off I can see the LED's are bright. It seems to be a contrast type issue.
