Camper Van Tweaks, Upgrades and Mods
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 มี.ค. 2018
Campervan Hacks does exactly as it says on the tin. It showcases hacks, tweaks, modifications, and upscales to your van. But it's a little bit different from other hacks channels. It stays clear of the good ideas type hacks such as “...always carry instant noodles in your van in case you forget to pack food…” (No… I am not going to forget to pack food). It stays clear of product reviews... there are no affiliate links in this channel. It's all about the mods and the tweaks to enhance your van life. Basically for the van nerds!

TY sir, I have to say that this controller SUCKS, to many functions crammed into this controller. HCALORY you should be ashamed. NEVER AGAIN, DO NOT RECOMEND BUYING SAVE THE HEADACH AND BUY ANOTHER BRAND.
Sir you are confused The controller in this video is not the HCALORY controller This is the six-bladed icon controller which is deemed to be the gold standard and which many people swap out their motherboards so they can adapt their heater to use this controller. The HCALORY controller has a physical knob on it.
Thank you very informative more so than the manual

Amazing country. Thanks for sharing.
Good
Excellent informative video, well done, much easier to learn from your videos than trying to make sense of the gobbldygook in the manual. Thanks man.💪
@@sligeach no worries dude glad it helped 👍
Thanks for the instructions. Im new to theae heaters. I dont hear any clicking from my pump, getting E8 and E4 I think also. Fuel at the heater I can see it. How can one fault find? 5.8v at the pump then it rises a couple of volts sometimes but no clicking pump.
E8 It's usually flame out or no fuel reaching the heater... which makes sense if the pump isn't working. E4 Is often the body temperature sensor either failed or lose connection to the motherboard. The following video shows you how to replace that sensor and it might help you cheque that it's seated properly and connected to the motherboard properly. It might be you just need a new sensor but very easy to do. th-cam.com/video/emurWyN51jY/w-d-xo.html
I'm going to be using one of these too. But I think I've got a 3 inch version. Which I needed to enlarge to 4 inch for standard ducting. I've 3d printed an adapter out of tpu if you want the STL file.
I've always wondered where you can get a butane tank filled for an economical price, propane's like 3 bucks a gallon and a 20lb tanks $50, but my searches online have 10lb butane tanks for like 200, even though people say butane's cheaper it seems like it cost way more for such a small advantage.
Anyone know what the aerial wifi type symbol is for ?? Blue lines in top left
It's pairing the remote control. When you pair a remote you'll see that symbol flash
Fantastic video... thank you ..
@@boomerang229 glad it was of use 👍
Thanks for this, most informative.
interesting. I saw another video where the guy made a similar tiny awning with a piece of 1/4" foam board. It slid in the gap in a similar manner.
Yep... sometimes you just don't need that full big bad boy awning....
I am a retired gas and oil fired boiler engineer. Do these things need servicing - dismantling, cleaning the blower housing / replacing glow plugs etc? Does it work better on paraffin or road diesel fuel? I guess if you have access it will also run on domestic central heating oil.
If setup correctly with the right fuel mix then they can go without servicing... I've never taken the one I have in my campervan apart in 8 years... but.. I am burning kero instead of diesel which is cleaner
Thank you. I got one, but couldn't make it work till I viewed your video. I tried to read the instructions. They are writen by a Chinaman who got hold of an English dictionary, tore out random pages, pinned them to a board and threw darts at them. He then compiled the instructions by stringing together all the words that the darts landed on.
Great video! It's nice to see a real-life scenario to prove what the manufacturers state (or don't state). As a sparky, I love a good amp-meter test. Also, I love the term 'cuddle room' instead of wiggle room.
Good video , I was not sure if it was better to bring the pump down to 1 then put it off.
Definitely agree with you that Kerosene is a clean fuel for these heaters. However for U.S., K-1 (UK C-1) Kerosene is the most common and it has very little lubricity. I use Stanadyne Lubricity formula additive which is designed for use in K-1 to reduce fuel pump wear. Maybe I don't need, it but at the recommended 1:1000 ratio of additive it's cheap and adds an additional peace of mind for the pump piston wear.
Thanks so much, I had to take the pump off and then keeping one pipe from the tank to the pump and then prime it this way , as had lots of goes without seeing any fuel going through, I first thought it was the pump, hence why taking it off to see if it was working and finally it did start to pump fuel through. I had a go without using the pump and just sucking the fuel through the pipes through I kept coming up with E 10 code, so I switched on to see if it was running properly and sure enough the fuel wasn’t going, so having the pump laying on a table just to see if it was working and seeing it was , then I put all the fuel pipes back on apart from the bottom pipe going into the heater, just to make sure fuel was going down there too, I also using the white fuel line with the black ends , tho I made it shorter this helped a great deed too. So put it up higher to burn 🔥 all the extra fuel in the chamber and now working great, ready for winter in my greenhouse.
Great video , helped me out very informative Cheers

? Q: reducing fuel input.. slower pump speed ✓ But lowering fan speed to what RPM. ? .. Example for use mini camper ..less volume .. about 1/3 of average size. Q: .. less startups per operating time .= Lower battery drain due to glow plug use .. .. I calculate 150/200 ml per hour will make 1•5 / 2•0 KW .. I use a 500w electric heater .. it works ... Video of fuel tuning and fan tuning to lower heat output.. And more important to lower battery draining ... Small campers. Need lower heat and important smaller batteries ., Thank you..
Hi not quite sure what you're asking here but the purpose of the video was to show how to adjust the ratio between the air intake and fuel in order to optimise the burn. You can of course find plenty of examples on Facebook and TH-cam where people have drawn graphs so you can get a good a kick-off setting but this was really for nerds who wanted to play and to optimise the fuel map without using a gas analyzer
@@campervan_hackers ... Mini campers don't need 8Kw heater. As bought DHeaters are optimised for Heat output .. Used in miniC thermostat max heat is achieved quickly .. DH shuts down .. mini campers cool quicker.. less mass/volume.. DH kicks in .. heating element draws 10kw ... All other videos are closed mines to reduce electric draw ... If smaller heat output heater operates constantly at low current draw .. it follows a lower capacity battery is required .. this has obvious advantages .. Small size. Faster charging , Less solar input.. As DH are not made in 1kw heat output .. except some German heaters (or were,) adjusting to lower a heater is not a topic .. it's always bigger and more... My screen is totally black When I hit the go button it starts up fine. Is there a way to turn it on just to go to setup mode like yours Mine is Prijesse 12V 5KW heater
Very odd… I did a bit of a Google search about that particular heater and it appears to have the same controller as in the video so my only thinking is either you've got a particularly unusual version or your controller is faulty. So I'm very sorry but unable to help. One thing you might consider is changing over the motherboard and controller which is very very easy and cheap… this video gives you a step by step th-cam.com/video/sDwrHozKInc/w-d-xo.html
@@campervan_hackers Your probably right about motherboard not being compatible with controller Thanks for your help anyway
Thanks, really helpful video, however, how do you gry the display to turn off? The van has been parked up for 3 days so far but the display is still illuminated.
@@stephanies6716 really glad it has helped. However for that particular display, regrettably it does not turn off. Some people have mounted their display so they can take it out of the holder flip it round and put it back in so the display is not keeping them awake at night. Others have just made a little cardboard blind to go over the top but alas on that particular display you can't turn it off.
Oh that's a shame, I guess I'm just going to come back to a flat battery then 😢. Thanks again though
The display itself uses very little juice. It will take a long time to flatten your battery but if you are leaving your van without using it and the heater isn't running then it might be worth putting an isolation switch between your battery and the heater. That's what I've done as have many people but mount it in a place where you can be sure you don't accidentally turn off while the heater is running.
Alas no... not with that controller. However, you can build a text switch to turn it on and off with your phone... Step by Step vid: th-cam.com/video/H-OJwxglf2c/w-d-xo.html
Can I Bluetooth if so what program and how please
Thanks for the video it’s much easier when it’s explained, can the heater be left on to maintain a set temp in a workshop through the winter ?
Hi, though I use my heaters on and off in both my camper van and my workshops there have been loads of people posting on the channel that they leave theirs running 24/7 so there should not be an issue... just don't run out of juice.😁
Brilliant videos..Any idea why I can’t seem to pair my new replacement to a lost remote. I’ve pressed the power and down arrow. Changed it to OC2. There is a new battery in the remote and the remote is showed a red led light when button is pressed but will not pair …
Sorry for the delay I've only just seen this. Assuming you have the same controller then the instructions in this video below might help. However, I have bought a couple of remotes owned to find they are defective so it might be simply you have a defective remote. th-cam.com/video/GpWa_koF9CU/w-d-xo.html
I think I need to replace my replacemnt LCD unit as I keep on getting random E-07 error - lost communication. Wiggle the cables going in to the unit it fires up again. Now, I do have it as a "roaming" unit that I can move around in my small poptop caravan that I live on the road here in Australia Before I buy a new unit I will mount the unit on a small piece of plywood or summat similar and stabilise the cable input
Have installed 2 Chinese heaters 5Kw in caravans. After 3 years I am completely satisfied. My caravan heats up quickly. After a year I had to replace the fuel hose that comes with it, a silicone hose. Bought a 3mm hydraulic hose white and from the tank that is installed in the trunk along the front to the heater along the back, the distance is 6m. It is important not to use the silicone hose that comes with the purchase, it cannot withstand diesel and cold/winter and starts to crumble. Then at the joints to the tank, pump, heater you use black reinforced fuel hose that you use in cars. Have tested the heating last winter when it was -11 degrees outside, took 30 minutes to get 18 degrees plus in the caravan. I don't usually prime the heater and if you have fuel in the tank, no priming is required. Also buy better hose clamps that last. Remember to be careful during the installation and in my case it usually takes 5-6 hours depending on the caravan type, you should also run the power cable directly from a battery with the right area depending on the cable length, as well as a fuse on the battery's + pole. Used to free camp and has 2 100W solar panels with 230V inverter and never run out of power. In addition, you avoid using LPG.
Have you got a video on how to fit it please?
Just bought a second hand camper with a Chinese diesel heater and think the seller told me it ran on petrol not diesel? Could that be right ??Ta
Dude.. possible.. there are a few out there.. based on the Eberspacher B series but the vast majority are diesel heaters. Best check!
@@campervan_hackers Thanks. Mine looks like regular Chinese supplier - Zhengmai Electrical Appliances Co. Fuel smells like petrol.
👍😊You are a legend
Fantastic help thank you. Clear instructions on how to set my new diesel heater up. The only thing I could’nt see covered was the process for changing the original hz setting for the temperature to degrees C. I was lost before watching your video
Here you go dude... th-cam.com/video/NhKU4AIt4jM/w-d-xo.html
Best video I've found. Got me going again. Thanks.
Glad it helped..
Hi, I’ve connected mine up to an old car battery which I charged up but it doesn’t have much juice and it gets drained before it can even get going properly. Once it’s going does it start to charge the battery or do I need to get a better battery and somehow find a way to keep that battery charger with a solar panel or something? It’s in a caravan not connected to a power source. Cheers
Thanks for this brilliant video. Just bought a used campervan with this heater and the user manual is virtually useless!
Glad it helped.
hi , great vid , just wondering have u ever heard of the controller settings access fail , ? i cannot get into the settings to adjust fuel/hrz rpm etc , maybe this is a cheap generic controller (comes with heater) that hasn't got that feature > thanks ( mine has a cog symbol not wrench) cheers
Yes you are absolutely correct. Some of the cheap heaters have a controller that cannot have the settings adjusted. However, it is very, very easy to swap out the motherboard and controller and this video shows you how to do it. The. Note you have to swap them out as a pair as it's a different motherboard that is associated with the controller. You can adjust the settings on. th-cam.com/video/sDwrHozKInc/w-d-xo.html
@@campervan_hackers thankyou for the info 👍
Clever little idea, thanks for the video 👍
Very well explained. Thank you
I just found legislation after I sent the v5 off only thing I would say is admiral(eui) insurance said if I don't get classification I have to tell insurance and will be changed back to a panel van which therefore won't give me same protection that I would get as it being a motor caravan
Yes you do have to shop around a bit. I found plenty out there that don't need motor caravan registration on the DVLA V5 but the rates do vary. I'm currently on fully com including all accessories, gas bottles et cetera 5000 miles a year for £280.
how do you know when to change the glow plug though? I have an espar and you need a special tool to disconnect the wires to change it.
Hi... on the CDHs, the wires are simply unplugged form the ECU .. there is a 2 pin connector. However, although none of my heaters are Ebers.... I thought they was similar except they have a waterproof inline plug that you can simply connect without special tools. This link for a Espar glow plug implied that? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386852784440?_ul=GB
Thanks for this, worth monitoring as never considered this before
Hi i,m struggling to set the thermostat to cut of when a certain temp is reached.its up and running but i seem to have no control over the temp cut out point. Help!! regards.
This is quite common because the hysteresis of the thermostat in these controllers is very very wide. So it becomes a particular problem you have a small very well insulated rig. This is why many people including me now just run the heaters on manual mode and it is one of the reasons I put the video up because I kept getting asked on how to switch to manual mode.
@@campervan_hackers thank you for the reply. Is it possible to set it to cut off at a set temp or is it safe to run the pump on its lowest speed continuously? Sorry about the questions I’m a chef by trade 😆.
@@tarsneyisleestrelas4659 Yes that should be fine.. Most of these heaters unless they are fitted with a Afterburner controller do not actually turn off when they reach temperature... they just dropped to their lowest possible running rate. If you have teed into your main tank so you are running diesel as opposed to kerosene or heating oil, it is not a bad idea to run it for 15 minutes on full blast before you turn off. That way if you haven't got the thing optimally tuned there's less likelihood of a problem of soot build-up in the chamber.
@@campervan_hackers I just used fresh diesel. It has its own tank inside the unit. I didn’t want to risk sucking up some junk from the tank as I don’t know what it’s like. Thanks again for the advice. 👍
Excellent 👍
Cheers dude.. hope it was of use.
Legend! Thank you
No worries... From the symptoms you described, 90% of the time it will be that sensor. 🤞
I just got that same controller for my heater and I have a bit of a problem. It turns the heater on and off fine, but it only allows me to run on very low or full power. I can turn the knob and the "heat-level LEDs" go up and down as they should, but the heater has not responded. If the LED's are set for anything but full power, I only get very low. Has anyone ran into this problem before? What is the solution?
Very odd... sounds like either the controller or the motherboard is suspect. The different controllers are paired to different motherboards so it's the safe option to replace both... very easy to do in this short video might help if you decide to go that route th-cam.com/video/sDwrHozKInc/w-d-xo.html
Very helpful video, so firstly thank you. I think my timer must be set, but didn't set it. I have only just installed the unit it's like yours in the video but I've had it for nearly 3 years. I never set the timer but I walked out to the van this morning and it was going but it wasn't warm, how do I turn it off the timer please mate, and why would it not be hot, does it need to be primed before start every time? Thank you
For clarity are you saying that it appeared to turn itself on but just blow cold air?
@@campervan_hackers Yeah mate, that's exactly what happened. Not sure how long it was running for but we didn't turn it on and the wife walked in this morning to pack some stuff as we are going away and it was on
@@geoffstein3896 okay dude... that sounds like the heat exchanger temperature sensor has gone down. Very cheap and easy to fix... here is the vid...th-cam.com/video/emurWyN51jY/w-d-xo.html

It's the signal to the remote control. When you operate the remote it flashes to confirm communication
