That first scene where John Wayne starts talking and that southern drawl comes out just had me in stitches. It's like Temujin just walked out of a saloon somewhere. Way to phone it in, Mr. Wayne.

+ndgv2 The best thing is that to my understanding, Jonh Wayne lobbied for this role super hard.

John Wayne was quoted as saying he felt this movie was just like a Western and that was how he was going to play Temujin, as a cowboy - hero type character.

I'd cast someone Asian, preferably from the same region of the world as the real Khan was. Ditto the rest of the cast. Someone who can pull off Wayne's menacing stare.

just to show you the other side: im not a cinephile, in my top 10 of movies are 2 pirates of the caribbean and an indie drama etc etc i suck at movies i know, but i love your show and i watch every episode no matter what the movie just because you two are so enthusiastic about the movies, have a great synergy and put on a great entertaining show every time, plus i often get bored while watching movies, but your show is a great summary of a movie and i often end up watching the ones you watched if i liked what i saw :3... just wanted to let you know that not everyone is picky with the episodes ;3

The very first scene that they filmed where John Wayne opened his mouth the entire production team should have stopped and asked themselves, "Are we really doing this? Are we really going to film an entire movie with this guy playing Genghis Khan with that accent? Really?"

thank you for watching this movie so I didn't have to - great ep! As an aside, I watched a documentary on Genghis Khan - oddly enough Mongolians say the name more like they did in the movie. Comes out more like Chengis.

Revisiting this episode, I wish you guys would watch Sergei Bodrov's Mongol (2008). It's a far better and more interesting movie about the rise and early life of Genghis Khan. All the performers in the movie speak Mongolian and, though it still relishes the "legendary" aspect of Genghis Khan's life, it's a brutal and more historically detailed depiction.

Oh, The Assassin. I saw it in a nearby theater (one of the benefits of city life). It's a really achingly gorgeous beautiful film, but so slow and confusing that both my wife and I struggled to stay awake through it. Not nearly enough assassinating, in our opinion.
Hey, you read my Seen It about Repo Man! The first name is actually pronounced may'-lin, (like "Mail in your order today!"), but still, exciting! I had _not_ heard the Modern Lovers version of that song, so thanks for that.

I actually loved the fact that ppl in this movie didn't try to do any offensive 'Mongolian' accents. And by 'offensive' I simply mean trying to imitate what the language sounds like to a non-speaker. I never understood that about Hollywood cinema.

Being a history major makes me realize all the missed opportunities in film. The origin of Genghis Khan is great and all, but what about a movie about his greatest commander Subutai? Subutai was possibly the greatest general in human history, he fought over 200 battles without losing a single one, conquered 32 countries, and performed many other incredible acts of martial tact and prowess such as when he took 10,000 men on a scouting mission to the west and ended up crippling the militaries of Georgia and Kievan Russia. The man was also a genius planner, he planned the campaign that destroyed the armies of Hungary and Poland within two days of each other, by forces over five hundred kilometers apart.
But instead we get a movie about a bunch of white folk stumbling over Mongolian names for 2 hours.
