Have you seen Treasure Planet (2002)? A great sci-fi adaptation of the classic featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, Emma Thompson, Martin Short, Laurie Metcalf, and a galley full of excellent character voices. The score by James Newton Howard is one of my all-time favorites.
Treasure Planet is Disney's hidden masterpiece. It's so underrated.

Muppet Treasure Island is ridiculously, unbelievably good.
I saw Tim Curry do a Q&A at a convention a few years ago, and I was surprised by how many people had questions for him about his performance in that movie. And holy shit -- the scene at the end where Jim lets him get away on the boat is, I'm seriously not kidding here, some of the best acting I've seen in my entire life.
I surprised Matt talking about "message boards" didn't cause him to instantly crumble to dust.

I have a similar theatre story: The first play I was ever in was Royal Hunt for the Sun. The production starred Ira David Wood (Evan Rachel Wood's father).
Since the play and script were both British, 'jailer' was spelled 'gaoler' -- and therefore David was pronouncing it with a hard 'g.'
I was unaware of the theatre etiquette which forbade actors giving notes to each other, so I kept suggesting that someone should let him know it's pronounced 'jailer.' Nobody was willing to say anything, however, so finally I mentioned it to him myself.
There was such a tremendous relief which overcame him at finally being able to understand the line. 'Oh! A jailer!' he exclaimed.
Many times after he loved sharing that story with others. Anyway, the Glengarry Glen Ross story reminded me. I feel like I totally understand the feeling.
This is officially my new favourite episode. I keep coming back to it all the time.
I'm watching this again for probably the 10th time lol. Such a classic episode!

And a darn cute one as well.
The Superman idea is hilariously great and it honestly makes sense when thinking about Superman in DC. Even though he may be the Last Son of Krypton there are several more people who survived Krypton’s destruction such as Superwoman and the Bottled City of Kandor. So it makes sense.

I'm assuming you haven't seen Treasure Planet? It destroyed Disney's classically animated division, but I think it's really good! Gorgeous art, cool space version of pirates, awesome Long John Silver performance and Jim relationship. It's great! At least, until Martin Short shows up... 😕
The film did not destroy the 2D department. The box office did.
Thanks for the mansplain, but when someone says that a film wasn't good for a company, it's implied that the failure was in box office returns, not in film quality. Treasure Planet didn't gain back the money that was put into it, which was a final nail in the coffin for Disney's 2D animation for almost a decade after that (Princess and the Frog also didn't do as well as folks hoped). So the film indeed "killed" that section of production for the company.
I’d watch a live action remake of treasure planet. Take a chance Disney, stop remaking the movies that worked the first time.

Personally my favourite movie version of this story is the made for TV version. With Charlton Heston as Long John Silver and a young Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins. Though gotta admit Muppet Treasure Island is an awesome movie. It's kind of a life-long goal of mine to play the part of Long John Silver.
Kind of Craig to say that he gets self-conscious instead of saying that Matt is occasionally annoying him.
When I was a kid I loved the Norwegian film "Shipwrecked." One of my favorite pirate movies.

Barton Fink was an insane film I came away completely in the dark but I knew somehow it was one of the greatest films ive ever seen.
What a happy coincidence! I'll be taking a tour of the tall ship Lady Washington so an episode on Treasure island is appropriate.
Muppets Treasure Island was one of the reasons I became a sailor for a couple of years (the others being the mathwork and cheap beer) Unfortunately, it was nowhere near as fun without the Muppets and internet.

Craig is especially silly this episode, and I for one approve.
So for funsies, I Googled it, and if Treasure Island does take place in the 1750's, 4 pennies is about a dollar and 50 cents when adjusted for inflation. So Matt's assessment of that payment was very spot on, even by today's standards.
One problem....there is no such thing as a silver 4 - penny bit. Back then there were silver sixpences and copper three pence coins, but no 4 penny bits.

It's always fun to see Nigel Bruce in a film. He was so wonderful as the bumbling oaf in the Sherlock Holmes films with the great Basil Rathbone. Bruce was excellent in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca and Suspicion too!

Seen It? "They Drive By Night" A rare early supporting role for Bogart, The skipper's dad: Alan Hale Sr and one of the all time great "goes crazy" scenes by Ida Lupino.
Having brought it up twice in one episode, you've inspired me to make a game: Modern movies if they were under the restrictions of the Hays Code.
First one to come to mind was that Ebbing, Missouri becomes a ghost town *overnight*. And a judge probably gives some big monologue about revenge before bringing down the gavel, like in The Bigamist.
Re the eyepatch statement right at the end, you can get the same effect by keeping one eye closed or covering it with your hand. Great for if you're about to go into the light after being somewhere dark but you want to still keep one eye adjusted to darkness. So yeah I'd buy that being a reason for eyepatches
Oh geez, I was totally thinking you were about to watch Captains Courageous the entire cold opening. Saw them in theater class the same year so I guess that’s why I connect the two.

Have you seen The Hitch-Hiker (1953)? It’s directed by Ida Lupino and was released in the same year as another film of hers, one that’s been on your show, The Bigamist. It’s a fantastic film-noir thriller. If you haven’t, check it out!

Yes! I love the eyepatch theory at the end. A friend of mine claimed they switched eyes for day/night, which makes no logical sense to me, but I can see how it stemmed from the below deck theory.
I've always heard that the eye patch was so that pirates could still aim at night to shoot if they switched eyes. The below deck theory sounds plausible though.
Hello, Craig and Matt! I love what you guys are doing! Keep up the great work! I have been loving this show since the "Tough Guys Don't Dance" episode. You guys are the new generation's Siskel and Ebert and I don't take that lightly. For a future Seen It, have you seen the 2002 film "Secretary"? I know the subject matter of this movie may be eyebrow raising, but it's a great portrayal of D/S relationships and the leads give impressive performances, especially Maggie Gyllenhaal. If you haven't seen this film, boy, is it much better than the "Fifty Shades of Grey" shlock. I saw it in the theaters back in '02 and I remember getting teary eyed with joy and not sleeping that day. 17 years later, my wife and I still love it as always.

Since we're talking about Treasure Planet, how about a Seen It for Treasure Planet, one of the great underrated Disney films.
Knowing Matt loves music biopics, and Craig is coming around on Ethan Hawke have you guys seen Blaze from last year. Though Hawke just directs, and does quite a good job my I add it is a profoundly sad yet beautiful film about man not many know, but is acted wonderfully by an unknown Ben Dickey I highly suggest you guys watch it if you haven’t. Not necessarily for the show, but at least to be talked about on scene it.

The Swimmer (1968), I thinks is a great movie with a weird premise but a great execution. Burt Lancaster is great in that film. Have you seen it?

I've always wondered if the Unboxing videos have fewer views because of the name. Unboxing videos on YT are sort of a genre, usually related to video game consoles. WTTB Unboxing is so much more than opening boxes. It's literally more of the show with, I would say, the movie/banter ratio being flipped. Everyone here should watch it.

The eyepatch trick works beautifully. You don't have to put the patch to the other eye, just flip it up.

Could you guys do an episode on Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings? I actually like it more than the Jackson movies in a lot of ways, and thought it captured the whimsical spirit of the books much better.

The Hays Code was the motion picture industry's attempt at policing the content of movies. It has rules like a if you show a crime/"sin" you must show it being punished later, a women must have at least one foot in the floor in any romantic scene, and priests can't be villains, and more.
