  • Do you hear that? It sounds like…howling echoing across the moors. And around the old leather couch, could those be the footprints of a giant hound? It’s time for us to join Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and try to solve the mystery of The Hound of the Baskervilles.
    In Seen It, we discuss riding that’s easy, summers that are soulful and a nightmarish alley.

    "Play Possum Up a Gumtree!" Few people realize that "Possum Up a Gumtree" was the "Stairway to Heaven" of it's day, and that Basil Rathbone was known for doing a killer version on the violin. But Craig knew.

    I really like Easy Rider because there’s always something new I can glean from it, but I think it’s the kind of film that’s more fun to think about and talk about than it is to actually watch over again.

    i'd love a comparison to the british produced "Hound of the Baskervilles" , released half a century later - it's originally a tv show but it's a feature length special and stars, to me, the greatest Holmes of all time, Jeremy Brett. Have you seen any of the "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" from the 80s?

    For the ultimate spooky Rathbone/Bruce Holmes outing, “The Scarlet Claw” is definitely the way to go. All the atmosphere and suspense of this version of _Hound_ but cranked up to 11 😱 And yes, that includes a glowing monster in B&W 😉

    The Cushing/Lee movie puts an unsatisfactory twist on the classic story. Cushing did a much more faithful version in the 1960s BBC series. But as the Hound goes, the best version might by Jeremy Brett’s.

    A spookier story in the Rathbone/Bruce is The Scarlet Claw--- someone (or someTHING) is killing people in a foggy Canadian village by ripping their throats out with the titular appendage. Its generally consider the best of the Universal produced films.

    I know you're not fans of Monsieur Goddard, but have you seen Masculin Feminin? It's the one film of his where the Marksist musings and philosophical discussions between characters actually work. It's engaging, melancholic and not annoying unlike The Weekend, which was on the show. Plus, how can you not fall in love with Chantal Goya who's playing Madelaine? I've never seen anyone on film as beautiful as she was.

    Seen it - The Aviator? I'm not a big fan of this film, I think Leonardo Decaprio sometimes just can't commit to the character. A lot of the CGI is really dated, and that throws off the film in some scenes. But the big crash was really intense and it had John C Riely in it, so it's worth watching for him. And I never knew Alan Alda could be such a bad guy, wow!

    You guys seem underwhelmed by this movie, but there are better Rathbone Sherlocks than this one, which is the first in the series. "The Pearl of Death" I think is the best one.
    Matt says that he wanted to see more "eccentricity" but I would contend that Rathbone's resistance to being eccentric is what makes his Sherlock one of the best. So many actors fall into the trap of making Sherlock way too weird and affected until you can't take him seriously. In my opinion Jeremy Brett is easily the worst offender, Cumberbatch is also guilty of this at times .

    • @legofan370
      @legofan370 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's kind of funny you say that because two very big Sherlock fan friends of mine think Brett is the best Sherlock period. Not saying you're wrong or anything like that, I just find it intriguing with how certain Sherlock fans stand is all.

    Seen it? Robocop 3. What the Hell happened? Robert John Burke did not capture the magic of Peter Weller. It was far too cartoony. The villain was annoying and lame. What a terrible way to end the Robocop Trilogy.
