Saw it in a packed theater in California. Audience loved it and everybody was laughing at the ending when they walked out. Incidentally my memory of walking out of the theater at that time was one of the precious few moments of my life of security, sanity and well-being.

Laughing at the ending? When the kid's parents blow up and he's left alone? (Unless my memory is incorrect and that's not the ending?) I was about 7 years old when I saw this at the theatre, and I was haunted by that ending. I was like, "here is all this wild fantasy, and in the end good triumphs over evil, but then that's really fantasy, and evil wins and the kid is an orphan." I'll never forget that sick feeling.

    • @joeblough261

Of course I was too young to fully understand many of the details of what was going on, but I did get the basic premise.

@@joeblough261i don’t recall anyone laughing during the pan out scene when Kevin realizes he’s just become an orphan, alone in the cold Evil filled Universe…with everyone he loves leaving him behind forever….
yeah maybe you’re thinking of another film like Ghostbusters…or Goonies… The ending of this film, of TIME BANDITS ,..WAS FUCKING BRUTAL.

@@joeblough261100% Agree! The spiraling black smoke wheels in reverse back into the chunk of Evil in the toastmaster as Kevin watches, he see’s Sean Connerys character as a Rescuer! a Fire Fighter!,..leaving him! Kevin is Standing there calling for his,..”Mum,..Daaad?”…as the shot pans out into the brutally cold stark Universe leaving Kevin as an ORPHAN!….that scene is laughable only if you mean insane hysterical laughter or histrionic laughter which in fact is really just an overload of deep pain filled emotions..not humor.
Terry Gillium even admits it’s not a funny scene. Thats the point of the film, that life is brutal especially for children, the silver lining is the creative grace and innocence children enjoy until Childhoods End/(Song by David Gilmore(Pink Floyd) off Atom Heart Mother)

I remember seeing this when I was a mere 9 years old...and I wasn't sure about seeing it, then my dad said "Half of Monty Python is in it," and I immediately said "When are we going!?" Watching this clip reminds me of exactly why I hated At The Movies: Gene was such a bloviated snob that I eventually learned to realize any movie he didn't like, I pretty much was gonna enjoy the hell out of lol.

Roger understood the assignment, Gene seemed to get too personal. I’m same as you, if gene is down on a film I usually get something out of it.

    • @googleisawful1473

Eh, I see where Gene’s coming from. The movie’s a little slow at times, and the characters don’t really feel fleshed out enough for me to care about them, excepting the main kid. I somewhat disagree with him on the Agamemnon part being boring, though. I think the kid’s sense of wonder and Sean Connery’s charm carry it well enough.
And while Ebert usually is more in line with popular opinion, there are the occasional films, Die Hard being a prime example, where Gene lines up better.
