Wow first top 5! I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’ve always wanted to talk about in-game trades in Pokemon games for the longest time! One mark off my “to-do” list!
Looking forward to putting out more scripted videos like this throughout the coming year. Still trying to gain proper footing with this format, I’m still trying out a couple of new things so bear with me!
Also I know nobody is gonna read this, but the Jojospective is still happening. The first series on Part 1 took a LONG time to write amongst everything else, I want to give any others the proper time they need. Part 2: Battle Tendency will definitely be over an hour or so worth of content, and Part 3: Stardust Crusaders will probably destroy every FIBER of my being. I will say though, the next Jojo video will NOT be on Part 2 or 3. I’m planning on touching on the whole series in its entirety for my next video(s) on the subject so stay tuned.
Also, don't expect weekly uploads again for a while! Me and the gang are working on some bigger projects as of right now, and I don't want to rush stuff to fit an upload schedule. Though I know you guys will dig it once it's out, we're planning on dropping a lot of stuff in quick succession when the time is right.

Fun Fact: In the new Pokemon game, Scarlet and Violet, there is a kind gentleman that trades you a Haunter, that doesn't hold an Everstone! And that is the only way to get Gengar in the game without trading with other people, so he is everything Mindy could've been.
Not really the only way to get Gengar. 5 star raids can have Gengar, and the other trade evolutions.
It's just that people like this one more because they made justice to the innocent souls that got scammed by Mindy.

'Caveat' is a modern English word for a warning or condition, but in conjunction with his Magikarp being named Carpe Diem (both a 'carp' pun and Latin for 'seize the day') it's clear that Caveat's name is actually a reference to another Latin phrase-- caveat emptor, or 'buyer beware'.
The worst part about the number 1 spot is that you can catch a Gastly at the Old Chateau, a place you can access after you get the second badge, meaning that if you wanted a Gengar, you would at the very least already have a Haunter by the time you have access to that trade. The trade literally serves no purpose other than to troll the player.
You could’ve also have had the hypothetical Gengar breed with a Pokémon (most likely Ditto) for a Gastly
You can actually catch a Gengar there by having Leafgreen in the GBA slot.

when i was a kid and i played platinum i literally didnt realize that haunter was supposed to evolve, i was just like "oh yeah free haunter!" and never realized until someone pointed it out years later

Yeah, that Haunter one stung. I remember the first time I played and I came across that, I specifically ran back to grab a Medicham and evolve it. I was so excited at the prospect of getting a Gengar.
Which I think was part of the point.
If it had been Machoke or Graveler, I would have likely just waited to the end of the game to get them for my Pokedex. I'm not even sure I would have bothered if it was a Medicham for an Alakazam. I wouldn't have trusted that any other trade evolution like Rhydon or Magmar would have had the item required.
I really do want to know who at Game Freak was responsible for this one. Was it a hatred of fans? A hatred of Haunter fans? What inspired them to actually put this in a game?

As a fourteen year old who recently played Diamond and Pearl for the first time, has Gengar as their favorite Pokémon and was unable to trade, me friggin too.
Meanwhile, in Scarlet and Violet, there's an NPC who trades you a Haunter without the everstone. Black and White 2 have the Boldore/Gigalith trade too
Mindy literally stopped a pokemon’s growth period for a joke. She literally stopped it from growing

It’s true that sometimes certain Pokémon prefer to stay in their current form like Ash’s Pikachu but what if there are also Pokémon that want to evolve but their trainer won’t let them?
Imagine giving an everstone to a Caterpie or a Magikarp. That would be cruel beyond belief.
I got caught by the Everstone haunter as 10 year old, and I have actively avoided in game trades from that day on.
The trauma
I feel for it about a year ago, at first I glossed over it but was then like "Wait did she just offer a Haunter? ...Don't those evolve from trades??" and when I saw there was no evolution cutscene I said "..No, did you.. you *FUCK!"*
In Black and White in Nacrene City, there's a trainer who will trade you Petilil for Cottonee or vice versa depending on the version. Then after the main story, you can battle that trainer and that Pokémon. But it will grow levels and evolves depending on how high level it was when traded. Because of this, it can potentially be Lv. 100. And it's moveset is kind of annoying no matter which one it is.
In Pokemon Sun and Moon, there's an in-game trade for an Alolan Graveler. I don't remember what it was being offered for, but the important thing is that, unlike with Mindy and her Haunter, it's not holding an Everstone, and it will evolve into Alolan Golem afterwards. So, clearly, Game Freak learned their lesson. In fact, when I did that trade, I thought to myself, "Okay, I forgive you, Game Freak. Let's put that Mindy business behind us."
Imagine trading it up to gen 8 and then using 2 switches to evolve it
Imagine trading a Haunter that's holding an Everstone...
That Haunter is the source of PTSD and anxiety for any true Sinnoh fan

For the magikarp trade it's even funnier, to me at least, when you realize the definition of caveat is:
a warning or proviso of specific stipulations, conditions, or limitations
I didn't know Haunter evolved via trade as a kid, so when I did the trade with Mindy, I was just like "sweet, free everstone" and never knew how I'd been trolled.
I did the Caveats trade. I can confirm that you must find and talk to him three times before doing the trade, although the days you encounter him must not be consecutive. You just need to find him in his random hotel of the day 3 times in total. The reason I did the trade was because I wanted better odds at the lottery. That's it. At least there's a place where you can fish and capture wild Gyarados, so you don't have to go through the pain of levelling up a Magikarp.

@@pikakip3792 The lottery works with ID numbers. If you have a Pokemon whose ID correspond with one or more of the numbers drawn up in the lotto, you win a prize, with a complete match giving a master ball. So the more Pokemon you traded, the more different ID numbers you have and that gives you better odds at winning. Works like that in all Pokemon games iirc.

As a kid, I tried this trade and spent so much time trying to get gengar, I remember being literally extremely upset over that lol
Great video! That said, for the Magikarp, there is one more reason you might want to trade for it: It will always have perfect IVs in Attack and Speed, which is excellent for a Gyarados! So you could raise up a Gyarados that's less than stellar and get a better one in return essentially :D The nature is random though, so you'd still have to do a little resetting if you want to use it out of the gate (though passing on IVs in Gen VI isn't hard!!)
On the topic of IVs, Mindy's Haunter. Now you'd expect to make up for trolling the player that they'd give it perfect IVs in its best stats (Sp. Atk and Speed) right? NOPE! They're actually 15 and 25 respectively! Just... couldn't even give us that, huh Game Freak?
(That said, its nature is Hasty which boosts Speed BUT that's probably just further trolling on you, mocking the player for being "Hasty")

That everstone is still the biggest "fuck you" to any kid who didn't have friends or couldn't find anyone still played Pokemon. Especially if Gangar was a Pokemon you always wanted.
theres a guy in Sun & Moon that tells you that "Some pokemon only evolve through trade" then asks to trade his Alolan graveler for yours. BUT! he pulls a Mindy and gives you a graveler with an ever stone! AND he also teases you for it!

Funny thing about number four is that I earlier today watched a video where someone played Pokemon Shield using only in-game traded Pokemon and Mr. Mime is literally the only available Pokemon that was useless to them.
It's funny though, in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum you can actually catch a wild Gengar in the Old Chateau. If you're playing on an original DS with a Gen III game inserted into the GBA slot, Gengar can be found in the wild. The only other way to catch a Gengar us through one of the SOS battles in Gen VII or in the Wild Area after beating the game in SwSh

What's really nice with Pokémon Scarlet/Violet is there is a person that trades a haunter that does not hold a ever stone (thank god). its in the electric gym's town near the middle of town!

Even if Mindy's Haunter didn't have an Everstone......You can actually catch a Gengar in the Old Chateau if you have a Pokemon Gameboy cartridge in the bottom of your DS.
Wait for real?? Which one :o? I knew depending on which cartridge you had changes what pokemon can show up in specific areas, but didn't know that.

I never did the Haunter trade when I played Platinum all those years back. When I did it in Brilliant Diamond, I was so excited to get a Gengar.

Well, tell me why a developer should give individual names for each trainers pokemon.
But if it gives you peace, you can think about it in the way that the trainer gave their Pokemon a name, but you as the player just doesn't care/forgot/didn't heard the name of his pokemon.
I like the overleveled spearow you can trade for in Silver that your supposed to deliver to someone else but you can just fucking keep it

ok, i think i know whats going on with the heartgold/soulsilver trade. in gen 2, rhydon's local dex number was 207, but in gen 4, that changed to 212. dodrio's pokedex number is 205 in gen 4, so this might be a case of a messed up dex ask in the game's code when the game was remade.
I feel like the sword and shield trade is very much so meant to be a bad trade! The guy offering it wants to fit in with the rest of team yell but only has mr. Mime, so he's trying to get someone to take it off of his hands so he can fit in :^( love the vid btw!

What makes the Dragonair and dodrio trade in blackthorn City even worse is the fact that Claire is your final obstacle before the Pokemon League and you don't have too many opportunities to get a dragon type Pokemon in order to cope with her team, especially that kingdra. So why on earth would anyone trade a Dragonair (One they probably worked hard to earn from the Game Corner) for a common bird Pokemon when you very likely already have a solid Flying type on your team by that point??

i remember being super excited to get a gengar as a kid. i grinded for a medicham and ran straight there. i was still new to pokemon so i didnt know about everstones. so when it didn't evolve i got confused. to talk to her again and be laughed at sparked a memory of sadness ill never forget
When Pokemon Sword first released PokeBank wasnt out yet so the Obstagoon for Mr.Mime trade was the only way to get a Kantonian Mr.Mime. Also Obstagoon is able to be found pretty easily in the wild since it is a guaranteed overworld encounter in certain parts of the Wild Area so you're not sacrificing much.

I actually instantly recognized Seedot at the beginning of the video, Hoenn was my favorite region as a kid.
I friggin loved this. I may be one of the "3 people who will watch this video," but I can genuinely say that I enjoyed this. Btw, I like the Colosseum trade, but I couldnt figure out if the Shadow Electabuzz was in the OG Colosseum or in GoDXD. I know the Elekid is in Colosseum, but was the Electabuzz there too or no? Thats all I was confused about. Also, I'd be willing to go through and do the magikarp trade and record it for you, just so you can have a clearer visual and more stuff to go with it.

I'm pretty sure the "super secret magicarp" thing is a reference to that guy that sold you a "super secret magicarp" for 500 bucks in the gen 1 games.

When I was younger, I also genuinely thought in-game trades were for people who didn't have the ability to trade (esp back when you needed cables and friends, lol). Then as I got older, I thought maybe the game designers just threw darts at a Pokedex poster to determine what Pokemon they traded in-game because it just seemed so random and arbitrary.
Now I believe the people in charge of in-game trades are just actively attempting to troll kids, and I just can't decide whether that's funny or just sad. The Carpe Diem trade is pretty funny to me though, not gonna lie.

About that Pokewalker, I still have my own, but I lost my copy of SoulSilver that came with it. And what sucks even more, that game card still has one of my first shinies on there; a shiny Parasect that I evolved!
Back when Sword and Shield came out (before you could connect to Pokémon home) that trade was the only way you could get Kantonian Mr. Mime in the game
Okay #4 actually has a purpose in filling out the PokeDex in Sword and Shield, and that is breeding for a Mime Jr. You cannot use a galarian Mr. Mime to breed for a Mime Jr.
...Mime Jr. is global-exclusive? _(Yeah, no, when it shows up in regions other than Kanto, I can't be arsed to call it Kantonian instead of Global.)_ I somehow didn't notice :/

Gonna have to do a google on that dragonair trade because i seem to remember using a dodrio in Crystal. Rhydon might be G/S only thing.
Edit: yup, Crystal did change the trade to Dodrio and that was retained in HGSS. I agree that Rhydon would be way better in the context of the remakes, however. Also, what could have been if I used Dragonite instead of Dodrio at the time...
For the Mr. Mime trade, some gym towns just have a trade for a type with advantage against the leader, Kantonian Mr. Mime as a Psychic/Fairy type fits that description, but it's really weird because those trades usually happen during the earlier parts of the game (and when they're later game the pokemon is usually pretty highly ranked competitively like Bisharp in the Snowbelle trade or at the very least are more powerful than the original pokemon like the Tangrowth in the Humilau trade) rather than at the penultimate gym leader which makes them more sensible because, for example, the bellsprout-->onix trade in Johto, the only other viable options for use against falkner (for super effective damage) are mareep, geodude, and maybe onix (also overlevelling to get croconaw ice fang but at that point you'd probably at most 2-shot his team anyways so redundant).

Carpe diem the Magikarp is one way to raise the hidden "style" stat, a key features of character customization introduced in gen6. I know this bc it seems like I'm the only person who gives a shit about maxing out the style stat. Other in game trades also raises this stat, making the trade horrible anyway.

The obstagoon didn't bother me purely because the gigantimax wild battle things left me with so many pointless pokemon because everytime I babysat this one daycare kid he would cry if I knocked out something instead of catching it
My favorite trade is in X and Y where someone wants a Luvdisc and in return they’ll give you a FREAKING STEELIX right before the 2nd gym, and Luvdisc can be caught literally right outside the town so it’s basically just a free Steelix
