At the bottom of this mine lies a big big man... "Big Bad John" was highly requested and I hope I've given Jimmy Dean's tune a little extra love and fresh air with this re-imagining of it. Thanks for watching!

"Big Bad John" was a grammy winning number 1 hit in 1961. The was song originally performed by Jimmy Dean (yes, the sausage guy) and to date, I've never heard another song quite like it. It really sticks with you. If you haven't heard the original, do yourself a favor and seek it out. I hope you enjoyed this updated version of it. Thanks for watching!

The reality behind the legend is Big Bill Murphy, who rests in the cemetery in Tonopah, Nevada. On February 23, 1911 a fire broke out over a thousand feet down, in a mine full of men. Big Bill got out to the surface - and then turned around and went back in to rescue others. He went down three times; he came up again twice.

A lot of commentary here on Geoff's low register, but I'm equally impressed with his resonance at the top of his range. His voice isn't just a gimmick; it's a brilliant instrument.

Jimmy Dean, best known for his famous sausage brand, was also a successful country music singer and songwriter. In 1961, needing a fourth song for a recording session, he penned "Big Bad John" on a plane, drawing inspiration from a tall actor named John Minto he'd met previously. Dean's simple lyrics and haunting melody, along with the iconic sound of Floyd Cramer striking steel with a hammer, propelled the song to the top of both the country and pop charts. Its tale of a mysterious, larger-than-life miner struck a chord, establishing "Big Bad John" as a timeless country music classic.

My grandfather used to sing this song to me when I was a kid whenever I was feeling bad, or had hurt myself running around with the other kids, or just when I was scared. It was one of the first "grown-up songs" I ever knew all the words to. He sang bass also, though you've got him beat for depth and range. Anyway, today would have been his 100th birthday. Unfortunately, we lost him when he was barely into his 60s. But this brought back good memories, and now I'm sitting here typing this with tears in my eyes. Thanks, Geoff. This was good. I appreciate it.

Geoff, listening to this I suddenly realized what a talented storyteller you are. You brought the story in this song to life, and I can feel the emotions behind each and every line.
At first there's a real tough-guy energy like Sixteen Tons, and then the mood turns ominous and gossipy with the talk about John's shady past. Suddenly the words come more rapidly with the tenseness and fear of the trapped miners, but then a hopeful new voice breaks in like the light from above; followed by a softer, more somber tone as we learn of John's lonely death. But the song ends triumphantly, as a tribute to that "big big man" who sacrificed himself for the rest.
All of this is subtle though; there's a solid, measured presence throughout the song, much like John himself.
I don't have the technical know-how to describe it any better than that, or to notice all the clever little details you've surely used to achieve this. All I can say is that you've brought out the emotion here in a way that's really incredible, and you've told this story better than anyone else I've ever heard.

This song was still playing on the radio and every juke box, in every bar and every little Podunk town in America when I was born in '66. By the time I turned six, it was STILL on the radio and in bars. My mom drank and dragged me along to the bar with her. I'd sit at the dark end of the bar w/ my mom drinking virgin Shirley Temples thinkin' I was all that...listening to this song and others like it.
It was a different time, a different place, a different era and, a different mind set back then. My mom was a single mother in the 60's.
So please don't judge my mom. She did the best she could w/ what she had... RIP, Mom.

This feels like a bridge between the songs and the narrations previously done by Geoff, and as someone who loves both I'm very happy with the fusion of those two parts, because it feels as relaxing as the narrations, but with the melodic quality of a song. At the same time this version feels lighter to me than the version from Jimmy Dean, which makes this version a lot more approachable and nice to listen to ❤️
And then the twist in the imagery really brings in the cilling feeling of the story told in the song.

    Lyrics:
    ...
Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive
    He stood six-foot-six weighed two-forty-five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to big John
    (Big John, big John)
    Big bad John (big John)
Well nobody seemed to know where John called home
He just drifted into the town and stayed all alone
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all, you just said hi to Big John
Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen
And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Louisiana fellow to the promised land, big John, c'mon
    (Big John, big John)
    Big bad John (big John)
Well, then came the day at the bottom of the mine
When a timber cracked and men started cryin'
Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last, 'cept John
(Big John) Big John yeah (big, big John)
    Big bad John (big John)
Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell
Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well
Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan
And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone, big John
    (Big John, big John)
    Big bad John
And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove
Then a miner yelled out "there's a light up above!"
And as twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave
There was only one left down there to save
(Big John) (big John) (big John) Big John (big John) big John
With jacks and timbers they started back down
Then came that rumble way down in the ground
And then smoke and gas belched out of that mine
Everybody knew it was the end of the line, for John
    ...
Now, they never reopened that worthless pit...
They just placed a marble slab in front of it...
And these few words, are written on that stand
At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big, man
    (Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big bad) (big John)
    Big John yeah (big John)
    Big bad John
    Big John (big John)
    (Big John)

This song reminds me of the Sicilian legend of Colapesce (Nick the fish) that my grandmother used to tell me. Nicola , Cola for short, lived in Sicily at the time of Charlemagne. He lived by the beach and loved swimming and diving so much that his friends started telling him that he was half fish and gave him the nickname of Colapesce. Nick could dive and stay under water so long that he became famous in all the island. When Charlemagne who was visiting Sicily heard of this young man, he went to the harbor to meet him. Nick was thrilled to meet the emperor who asked him to dive and to tell him about the underwater wonders, Nick did so and came back with coral and pearl for the emperor. Charlemagne asked Nick the fish to dive again and to tell him what was keeping Sicily from sinking in the sea, Nick dove once again and came back telling Charlemagne that Sicily was sitting on top of 3 giant columns and that one looked like it was in bad shape. The emperor asked Colapesce to dive once more to confirm the status of the column, but this time he did not come back, because he is holding the cracked column together and preventing Sicily from sinking into the sea.

WARNING: War and Peace-length appreciation analysis ahead…
This song is like a narration set to music - the Storyteller is great and engaging…but because I’m a chord junkie, my focus was grabbed by each transition in the harmony parts. Each one sounded carefully crafted to be interesting and unique, to move the song along, to take us on an emotional journey. Whenever choices have been made that deviate from the predictable, it’s like candy for my brain, and lucky for me, you seem to love to do that, Geoff. This is my brain on your songs:
The original version of this song keeps to the same, repetitive chord structure throughout. Verses with a pulsing, bare G-F-G, and the choruses utilizing the “50s progression” - the I-vi-IV-V that everyone learns on the piano to play with their friends. I was happy to see that you kept this progression through a lot of the song, but I was *extra* happy to see when you deviated from this, in the verse (1:13) where, deliciously, you went with I-bVII-IV-V7 instead. It made that C major chord sooo extra tasty, and that bVII (the F major chord) made me sigh with delight and sent shivers up my arms.
    0:45: i-V-bVII-I (Gmin / D maj / F maj / G maj). Sung notes: G A Bb D C Bb / A / F / G (Oh boy! There’s that bVII again!! :D )
I literally couldn’t get past this chord progression the first time I listened to the song. It struck me in my soul somehow. Often we hear those sung notes paired with an Aeolian cadence (in this case, that would be walking up the chords of Eb, F, then G) but this is even better! The choice to flirt with G min, when we’ve been in G maj this whole time, was amazing. That sung A is the fifth in the D maj chord and carries over to become the third of the F maj chord, and resolves up to B, back into the G major chord, giving almost a Picardy third feel because of that hint of G min at the beginning of the phrase. F maj is a non-diatonic (out of key) chord, something that pops out as an interesting deviation from the norm, but of course ties in nicely with the repeating G-F-G throughout.
“There came a day at the bottom of the mine when a timber cracked…” (1:13) Now that we’ve heard John’s backstory, we are being told about the actual story here, and with that, the instrumentation is bigger, fuller, more present and driving. This section is also introduced with another quick peek at a G min chord. This is going to be an interesting story.
    1:47: I-vi-iv7-V (Gmaj / Em / Cm7 / D) Sung notes D C / B G A / Bb C D / D
A nod to the 50’s progression of the chorus of the original. The iv7 (Cm7) *(am I imagining this is Cm? Is there actually an Eb in there?)* is again non-diatonic and is again, well, delicious. (I’ve said “delicious” so often here that this is turning into a gourmet meal.)
So cool how at 1:55 you have actually *invented* a bridge for Sixteen Tons Geoff to sing - he likely has quite a few mining stories of his own, too. During the phrase “light up above,” (2:05) the notes also go up - nice attention to detail there.
Immediately, the tone is brought down (2:20). We only hear the root note of the song from the harmony singers in staggered unison with a bit of extra reverb, like they are calling out to Big John down the mine shaft. I can almost see and feel the aftermath, the plume of dust spilling forth, the stunned looks. What is going to happen next? My curiosity is piqued…
Ahhh, there it is. 2:32 - We have moved fully into G *minor*, a brilliant choice to convey this next part of the story - the tragic part of the story. In the original, the entire song is in G major, and this departure from the original for this part of the song is a much more emotional way to tell this tale. The i-bVII-IV-V progression is a nice nod back to the deviation from the 50’s progression you set earlier, and at 2:52, the F#4 (the 5th in that D major chord) sung in the harmony part feels like the penultimate chord that is going to lead back into G…but that is withheld from us. Leads us to lean in closer, cock an ear toward the sound…NOW what’s going to happen??
Now we get gentle arpeggios from the harmony parts while the Storyteller tells us what has happened to John. Realization is setting in. Starting with a simple G minor arpeggio (2:55) in the background singers, root position (G Bb D), we then get the most heartbreaking chord of them all. That second arpeggio. OMG. 3:00 - C major 1st inversion (E C G), i.e., bass is on the third. In any song, when the lowest note of a chord or arpeggio is on the third, it evokes such sweet sadness to me and almost immediately brings tears to my eyes. AMAZINGLY arranged during this part in the lyrical journey.
Hey, remember what I said about the incredible emotional impact 1st inversion chords have on me? Get a load of this run of chords in the harmony parts at 3:04: Gmin, Bb/F, C/E, Cm/Eb, Gm/D, D. Geoff, you master emotional manipulator, you!
I love that we now return to the 50s progression to finish out the song, bringing it back full circle. Thank you for this incredible re-imagining of this song, Geoff!

    THANK YOU, darlin'!!!
I remember hearing this song on the radio when it first came out in 1962. I was 9 years old. It was special in our home in Georgia, not only because we were Jimmy Dean fans, but also because my father was already known as "Big John". He wasn't quite as big, but he was 6'3" and 225# of muscle. Soon after it came out, my brother came home with the 45rpm vinyl that we played over and over. Daddy would have loved this! He watched Lawrence Welk every Saturday night just to hear Larry Hooper sing. Harold Reid was another of his favorites. I lost him to a heart attack in 1987, the most devastating day of my life. I can't tell you how much I appreciate having these most precious memories brought out for some air when our world is in such a dark place. Bless your heart. 💗

I love being a patron of yours, you leave me in awe of the creativity that you possess and I love being able to contribute a small portion of it. Geoff, this one is so fascinating. The original song does not do anything for me, so I was curious how you'd approach this song.
The moment I hit play, I kept replaying it. There's so much to listen for, you've made this version have a certain drive and musicality which I so appreciate about your music. You build it up so nicely towards the end, and it stays so interesting to listen to, with each replay.
Though the backlighting on narrator Geoff might be a bit strong for me at times, it completely builds the right atmosphere for this theme and setting. How fun it must be to sing songs about mining AND get to do an obscure lighting of your scene. You can go a long way with a low amount of props and set pieces and you prove that with this one as well.
I like the lines in the shot you've created for this one, the different singers at different heights, playing around with different angles, and proximity in shots offers a nice variety, gives us something new to look at with each cut. Those edits at the end were so good too, I really liked that little addition.
Seeing sheet music for this one would be SO interesting, just putting that out there :)
With each new visit to the mines, you come back and have dig up new gold, and I am just overjoyed you are willing to share with us.
Thank you for creating music I would otherwise not necessarily seek out myself.

I find song and the performance of it so impressive. In fact, it became one of my favourites sung by G. Castellucci, along with Sixteen Tons and Folsom Prison Blues. Each one of the three is story-telling sung with great skill - and it isn't only because the range of Geoff's remarkable voice, but it is the sort of emotional expression contained in it.

A fitting tribute to Jimmy Dean. Love your personal touch on it, Geoff. Not only your low notes (which are still freakin' awesome), but to the emotion you pull on it. The original always made me tear up, due to my family being miners during the 50's-70's. This didn't bring tears, but made me feel proud of that family history. I can't explain "why" in words, only that it's the emotion your song pulled.

And how you did this song, which I have listened to ever since my granddaddy was alive; it is so spot on the money to his words within the original; that it brings back memories of hearing my granddaddy sing it. Things like this and Sixteen Tons. It's nice to see those old songs being brought back for newer audiences to experience.
