Geoff is so amazing at breathing new life into these old songs I grew up listening to. Sixteen Tons, Shenandoah (Tennessee Ernie Ford). From the day he released Sixteen Tons we have non stop been begging him to do this one by Jimmy Dean. I remember Mr. Dean singing this song on his TV show way back in the 1960s
I think that's why he gave a nod to 'Sixteen Tons' in this one. White tank Geoff at the end of the song slams the pickaxe and the *room* shakes just like he and camerawoman extraordinaire Kathy did in the video for 'Sixteen Tons'. His reworking of these older songs are so musically and vocally satisfying because of the attention to detail he brings to all aspects of these productions. It shows both his artistry and that he always strives to bring a quality product to us listeners. I, for one, could play his and Voiceplay's catalogue on repeat and not feel its played out for a long time.
Geoff said this was a hard one to arrange because it's pretty repetitive & he tried to change it up. I never liked the original but I love this. I'm glad you enjoyed when he fell off the save word, that & the crack in white vest Geoff's voice on miner are my favourite bits! He added the 'ghost' scene after the preview & it is awesome. Kathy has got camera person down to a fine art on the solos.
I actually like the original version better... Not to say this isn't amazing. What i find amazing is how many people have actually heard the original. I remember my mom dancing in the livingroom to this song back in the 70's
Geoff's talent as an arranger really shows in this video. He puts in lots of intricate dynamics and change-ups that really freshen up the song, and Kathy does a wonderful job as videographer! When I see the actual set (it's filmed in a 'junk' storeroom) and then the finished video, I can't believe the difference. Lovely reaction Jennifer, it is so fun to watch you reacting and singing along to the low and high notes!
Other vocal coaches noticed how he didn't close off on "save" and actually spoke the last part of it. His voice is built for this, since it took his voice lower on the "ve-uh" spoken than it would have sang; plus, it wouldn't have sounded right, otherwise... it was absolutely brilliant the way he did it.
Thanx for reacting to this one, Jennifer! I have two favorite parts. First when baritone Geoff comes in with the "With all of his strength". Geoff's mid register is just butter - love, love, love it! And the very end is an homage to his most popular solo, 16 tons. That tap of the tools on the floor and the shake of the screen/lights appear over and over in that earlier piece. Love your reactions to Voiceplay and Geoff, keep 'em coming!
I love how you commented on the contrast in his vocals, to me it's one of things that makes Geoff truly unique and a joy to listen to ❤️ Shenandoah is another song where the contrast is just simply beautiful (in my humble opinion), and you should definitely check that one out 😃
Geoff delivers, as always! Please react to Shenandoah... it's a beautiful folk song, and Geoff uses his mid-range a fair amount in it. And it's beautiful!
HI Jen, A few interesting things about this video. First the song itself goes back to 1961 and I think was the Billboard country song of the year. The artist was Jimmy Dean and was a somewhat popular Country artist. Country music was really not all that popular or polished at that time and came into its own in the area of the late 80's. The expression used by the Country music media for the improvement was that country music had come " Up Town". Geoff is or was ( don't know) a member of Voice Play and they were also a part of the show " Sing Off" that was a somewhat similar show to Britain's Got Talent, but for A Capella groups. I think Home Free won the year that Voice Play was on the program and Pentatonix had won the year before. All three of those groups have done pretty well.. What also is interesting is that Voice Play and Voctave are both from the Orlando , Florida area ? I live in Florida and Florida is not the mecca of musicians. The music scene and the quality of the musicians is sort of so-so here. I imagine that is coincidence. Thanks Jen, We love you
I think what comes out of Orlando, apart from whatever degree of musical excellence one sees or doesn't see in its denizens, is the showmanship aspect. VoicePlay is an example of this. The members (Geoff is still one) and their close associates display a whole stable worth of talents, which they put forth without stint, and the results are something very special. Their videos, with the sets, costumes, makeup, camera work, special effects... The vocal arrangements (which are almost all by Geoff and Layne, I believe)... Plus the sheer energy and heart they put forth. The attention to detail in both music and visuals. The willingness to make fools of themselves in the funny bits. And the sense that these are the nice neighbor boys down the street putting together a pageant and having a blast, yet it's so professional where it needs to be. I love that they do a lot of Disney covers. So much variety of material to explore, and all wholesome. Beyond how well any group did on The Sing-Off, I think these guys have devoted themselves to their music ever since and it has paid off. In my mind they now creatively outperform Home Free and Pentatonix, and they just keep growing. And it's seen in Geoff's solo work as well. And I think this whole spirit comes, in large part, from that Orlando and Disney environment and exposure, which he and most of the rest of VoicePlay seem to have had. Sorry, I lost track of whether I was on a VoicePlay or a Geoff video.
Another really fun reaction Jen! Geoff always pulls off great bass covers and this one was no exception. I enjoy the little technical bits you point out as you progress through the song. Always end up learning something or noticing something I would have otherwise missed. Most excellent job, as usual!
Nice reaction! I first heard Geoff in September last year and I'm now a great fan of his! This is my first time writing on your reactions, allthough I've seen a few! Keep on doing them! You're doing a great job!
This is the second song that Geoff- has redeemed for me. There is something truly magical in his arrangements, I swear it. Anyhoo, glad you picked up on that breathy drop on 'save'. I've noticed that this is a thing I hear more from him recently; letting the end of a word or phrase just kind of drop like that, almost into a soft growl- it stood out to me as well in God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, most notably at about 2:42 ( th-cam.com/video/l8Sxh5E2u_g/w-d-xo.html ) in that video, but at least one at time at the very beginning (much quicker and more quietly), at about 0:34 ( th-cam.com/video/l8Sxh5E2u_g/w-d-xo.html ). (DON'T CLICK THE TIMESTAMPS; follow the links in parentheses) It's a fascinating vocal detail to choose, subtle but creating an interesting texture to the sound. Geoff is almost unfairly talented- but isn't it *wonderful*? 😄
This song has been waiting to come about, and since Geoff has come out in the ALONE (without VOICEPLAY) category, Big Bad John is back. I love this song and this version was/is great. You need a DEEP, BASS VOICE to make this song good. And thank you, Geoff. The voice is Perfect for BIG BAD JOHN. Great Post, Jennifer.
He does a Radiohead cover of High and Dry. No extra Geoff's. Just him and a keyboard. It's pretty interesting after hearing his current stuff with the extra Geoff's. It's worth a listen if you get the chance.
Thank you again for a wonderful reaction. Just have to add another vote to the please review his version of Shenandoah, I think it's incredibly beautiful. Took me a couple of viewings to really appreciate his 'High and Dry', but that may be because I wasn't familiar at all with the original, and now it's one of my favorites as well.
@@JenniferGlatzhofer Yes, that's how I occasionally change my reaction to: "Geoff, what are you doing recording a song I don't know?" "Geoff, what are you doing making me go back and listen to it again?" "Okay, okay, Geoff, I'll add it to the frequently played playlist."
What impresses me is his range as a grown man. It reminds me of when I was in 12th grade choir in 7th grade. Before my voice broke. I was able to sing along with everyone, from bass to saprano.

Please react to Home Free's version of 'American Pie feat. Don Mclean'. As I'm sure you know, Don Mclean is the original singer. He said he chose Home Free to sing with him because, quote, 'They know harmonies.' It was the 50th anniversary re-release of the iconic song. It's crazy how low and heavy a G3 sounds when coming from you. I have to "reach up" for that note (and it feels even higher for Geoff) but I feel like you have to "go down" to get it, if that makes sense. The human voice is really weird.
Your the first reactor to notice his smile there at the end of the monochrome bit. I noticed it right away, but after you recognized it I noticed a lot of smirks going on with the rest of the Geoffs. I suppose there was a lot of "Big Bad John" going on between all those takes. Trying to keep it serious looks to be a loss cause for poor Geoff.
It blows my mind that Geoff doesn't call himself a true bass... if I recall correctly, he prefers Rock Lead vocalist that happens to be able to sing "Bass"
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful cover by Geoff! I watched your reaction to Voice Play’s cover of “Dream On”, & although I liked your reaction, I really found it almost painful to watch the group! The odd dress, the tats, the goofy hair/piercings, etc. we’re just very uncomfortable to watch & made me not want to look at them. I know that may sound awful to say (so don’t come at me!), but I found it very off-putting. I’m more traditional, so I’m not a fan of the craziness.
I like how he mixed in the accompaniment and how he mixed his base dives at the end of each verse, but he tends to over dramatize which sometimes diminishes the affect. I loved the original. It was slow and repetitive, but the lyrics made it an iconic narrative tale. This falls short for me until the last 2 verses when he goes into the higher contrast. Loaded with talent, love the use of the different voices but in shying away from the original I think he lost the heart of the song.
Another great performance from Geoff!! Always more to talk about as well :)
You should definitely check out Geoff’s covers of Shenandoah and High and Dry!!

I don’t know about better, but it’s close.
Jeoff does all parts
How much of this is effects though?
I'm really curious why other bass singers can't seem to sound this way.

It blows my mind that Geoff doesn't call himself a true bass... if I recall correctly, he prefers Rock Lead vocalist that happens to be able to sing "Bass"
:) i use his to practice..................... lup[us took my voice............ but i can sing this.............. and way way deeper

You do know all of the parts of this song is done by Geoff
What do you mean the others aren't there? They are obviously clones! :p
I not see any pentatonix on you channel you should look into them
Jimmy Dean's version of this song was very basic, even a little plain. Geoff's version is dressed up much more, but I like & respect it.
He is 5 octives

Hi Jennifer, you need to do something with your hair. Have a great day!
