Great video with lots of information once again. The new fly seems a major success so struggling to understand why you want to change it when it works so well. Rooting for Steve - hope he gets a few next time.
Hi David, yes this fly works really well and has so far been consistent. But with a bit of tweaking can do better. The bead for one thing means it drops quite quickly so I will try different beads so it spends more time in each layer of water, giving more chance of being seen by the fish. And thanks for rooting for Steve. I will make sure next trip that he gets fish. Take care mate. Shaun.

Hi Jeroen really nice to hear from you. I have worked with the apps, trying a few things out. I do find the shorter legs gets me more hook ups. But when the fish are tricky, floating line, long tippet and bounce it near the bottom. Thanks for the comment Jeroen. Good luck and take care mate. Shaun.

Hi Shaun are you doing any video this year as I got a lot of good tips from you I'm from Scotland and just staring out on still water still learning still trying to figure out what fly's to use start of season
Very unusual comment Brian. I know I don't post loads of videos. Maybe 1or two a month. Have done a bit more over this Christmas period. Yes I will continue as always. Choosing what pattern will mainly be decided on what you are targeting. Stock Fish normally larger and brighter. And move with a bit of pace. Resident fish more often smaller and natural. Fished with a steady figure of eight to static. But when it comes to stock fish remember they have never eaten naturally before in there lives. It takes time for them to start to understand what is food and what is not. So these fish will pick almost anything up as they start to learn. This is what most people fish for and why we have patterns that look nothing like food. Summer months when there is plentiful natural food around, fish catch on quickly. Winter less food, fish take longer to switch on. But at the same time there metabolism slows up. I find targeting resident fish obviously harder, but more rewarding. But then makes for picking the stock fish up easier. If you have been missing out on the videos. Try clicking on the bell for notifications. Good look for the new season Brian. Get back to me if there is any thing. Shaun.
Is that still the barrio floater? Looked a little coily on the water today? Or was it the Orvis pro trout? The Orvis lines never normally coil too much (No line is completely coil free)

@@rhyspercey3880 Hi Rhys I am impressed, 13 and your talking of shooting a whole line. Well done you. Ok the core on the 125 is the same as the 90. @@shaunfishes101 thanks Shaun for your help as new to stillwater caught one fish on blood worns on dry line then nothing after ward didn't no if to change fly
@@brianpinkerton5909 Brian I have been thinking of you and this comment. I will get something on video at some point. But I know now it will not be sooner. So I will try to give you a better understanding. First of all choosing the first fly, assuming the fish have not given us any idea. I would at this time of year choose a lure which I have most confidence in. Actually for the first few hours of the morning for most of the year, the lure works really well. I would cover as much of the water as you can. Fishing it quite fast at times. Certainly if water is quite clear. I would cover all of Hayscastle with this lure before considering any change. I have done this in about one and half hours. I may decide to cover a few more areas again. Starting fast and high in the water. But after a few casts, start allowing it to drop and fish deeper and slower if on a floating line. Intermediate will allow me to fish it a bit faster if I wish. If I have had no response from the fish. By this time I will either switch to another lure. Something totally different. Or on with the floater and small patterns. Now we will be fishing for a difficult fish. Again with no sign from the fish. I will always work my way down. Starting with the pattern I have most confidence in. In my case that could well be a small slim nymph. Start by fishing just below the surface with a bit of pace. Remembering always fan casting and checking as much water as you can. If still fail. slow it up and fish slower and deeper. Once I am happy that I have covered the water, each level and different speeds. I would then consider changing the pattern. But most important. The pattern you have most confidence in, is the pattern you should have on. If you ever start doubting a pattern. get it off and switch. So the time we have a pattern on is going to be different always. Another thing to be aware off. Fish taking a buzzer at this end of the lake, may not be taking buzzers at the other end. Its a difficult one Brian, and one that only you can decide on, on the day. There has been times where I have changed flies maybe 10 times in an hr. This is mainly when I get a hunch. And to fix this, is to put the fly on and give it a quick bash. But mainly fishing the method we mentioned at the start. Can help locate fish. Once fish found, a lot of patterns will work. Assuming they are stock fish. Really hope this helps a little bit Brian. Good luck mate. Shaun.

Ok this is going to change all day long and every day. The fish are moving up and down in the layers all the time. sometimes they may stay in one layer for longer if conditions suet. So for me if conditions are tuff it will slow every thing up, therefor I will spend longer in one layer. If conditions are good I will change layers sooner. Tell you what, This is actually a good comment and its the sort of thing that most of us overlook, but it is important. I will cover it on the next video, and perhaps it will be a bit more clearer. Thanks so much B2 the C. And take care mate. Shaun.
Hi B2 the C, I have been on the water twice since this comment, and I cant get my head around how to put this. I my self went through the motions of the day and thinking about this. Honestly there is no set time. Its just a feeling. some might say they would give it 30 mins. But a lot depends on so many things, like conditions. Example. Today I fished and the fish were about 2' down even though it was really windy and cold. Within 20 mins they went down, and with the same set up I had to count down and slow retrieve. Fish. Another 20 mins could not touch a fish. Stripping in to recast fish smashed me on the top. Cast back out strip in really fast had another three fish on the top. For me I try to fish with something that's versatile. As to day. I know this does not answer your question but I hope it helps. Take care. Shaun.

@@shaunfishes101 We call this stuff mud. Shaun, I will be competing in the Canadian Women's Nationals April 28 - 30. 16 women, it is only the second women's comp in Canada.
@@nicolelewis1828 Mud, of course. Ye same over here, just could not get my head to work at that moment. Bit slow out there. The women's Nationals here has been going on for years. I actually fish with a lot of the Welsh Ladies. They fish this water Hayscastle. The boys fish Garnffrwd which is another water I fish a lot. I wish you all the very best in the comp Nicole. Tight lines girl. Shaun.
Everyone has friend that fishes like Steve lol 🔥🔫
So sorry, I have just found your comment. Ye poor Steve, he has had a bad few months on the water. He only gets to fish every fortnight. But he did crack it Thursday and had one. He is over the moon. Sorry again and thanks for your comment. Shaun.
How long will you fish before dropping levels in the water to find where they are feeding
Take care. Shaun.
@@shaunfishes101 thanks Shaun. thanks for the follow up message much appreciated
