Flat Calm - Tactics, Stillwater Fly Fishing at Kailzie

- This video features my recent trip to Kailzie Fishery. The conditions were tricky, as it was flat calm and bright sunshine most of the day, and I talk through my thought process on the day.
I was using my 6 weight vision onki rod, with my orvis pro floating line on the bung and dries, and tried fishing my 15ft ghost tip (0.5 ips) and my slow intermediate (1.5 ips) using small nymphs, damsels and lures with no joy. I also tried straight line nymphing, but again, it seemed they wanted it static and the bung was the only method that was effective on the day.
Love it or hate it, some days it can be the difference between catching and not catching, and has as much skill as lure fishing really, as it can be tricky to present well and you have to adapt to the correct depth.
I hope you enjoyed the video, and please comment and subscribe to get future updates.
Take care
Chris

Great video, filming and advice. I have tied some egg flies as per a previous video and cannot wait to try them out on Thursday. What I like about your video is the way you show your set up and the details of the flies. Clear and informative. I agree with Ryan regarding who has disliked these videos, it is someone who does not appreciate good solid fishing with sound advice. Keep them coming Chris.
Thanks Ivan appreciate it, and let me know how you get on with the eggs! Haha, it’s all good, I’m getting more likes that dislikes so can’t be too bad! 😂 👍🏻
Thanks again Chris, very enjoyable ,Sam✊
Cheers Sam! 👍🏻
Who is disliking these videos? Wronguns.
Good solid advice as always, look forward to the next one 👍
Haha! Thanks Ryan, appreciate it! 👍🏻
@Ronnie Vivaan what a sad insecure man you are 😂
Cheers Chris appreciated as per! looking forward to the next one 🎣👍
Cheers Wullie! 👍🏻🎣
i felt like i'd been there. loved your approach !
Thanks Jan, I need to get back down there for a nice chilled session soon! 👍🏻🎣
Thank you for your videos. As a relative newbie to fly fishing for trout your videos are very informative and educational.
No worries mate, glad you found them useful 👍🏻 need to get back on it soon! 👍🏻🎣
Excellent as always Chris. Solid advice there. Great filming. As you said, having methods at your disposal gives you many options when conditions dictate. Scenery is fantastic, but we all want to catch fish when pay for a ticket. Keep em coming mate. Tight lines! 👍
North East Trout Flies - thanks mate, appreciate the kind words. Yeah I will go through many methods on any given day, whether I’m catching or not, to find what is working best and try things out. Thanks again 👍🏻
Another great video Chris. Always get great tips and different insight.
Cheers Euan, we will need to get out for a cast again sometime 👍🏻
@@TheTroutFlyFisherman Definitely Chris! We will get something organised soon.
@@euanblair7564 👍🏻
Enjoyable and informative video as usual Chris. Many thanks. Talking through tactics as you go along at the fishery is a great way of handing down advice and tips :)
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Great advice. Many thanks.
Cheers Simon 👍🏻
Well done Chris, again full of info. Its a shame these who are negative can't spell as I for one would love to hear what they have to say. We would work to improve to there standards if they could manage a comment. Well done mate. Shaun.
Thanks Shaun! Haha, to be fair any video featuring a bung will always upset some, it’s all good! I’m a positive outlook type of guy 👍🏻
@@TheTroutFlyFisherman Top man.
Nice video!
I managed a 9lb brownie out there a few weeks ago. Great wee lake
Thanks for your advice mate knowledge is power
Another brilliant video mate well done 👏
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Always enjoy your videos keep it up!!
Thanks Stef, appreciate it! 👍🏻
Great video, thank you.
Thanks Daz! 👍🏻
Looked like a good day oot!!
Great content mate, please keep em coming, my season is done here in Germany where I live so I've just got to fish vicariously through TH-cam and tie a shit tonn of flies for next season. 🍺🍺
ATB Chris.
Thanks Chris! Yeah it was definitely an enjoyable session! I will be fishing right through the winter hopefully, dependent on lockdowns, so I can hopefully keep them coming!! 👍🏻 happy tying mate! 🍺
Hello from Ireland 🇮🇪 😀
Hi mate! 😃👍🏻
Great stuff!
Cheers Colin 👍🏻
What a place that looks man. I'll be on the eggs next time 👍
It’s a stunning wee place, proper peace and quiet. Eggs really do perform well when there is little insect life 👍🏻
Very nice video bro 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks mate, appreciate it 👍🏻
Another great video Chris, although personally I feel there is no place for using a bung in fly fishing but each to their own I suppose 👍🤣
Cheers mate! Haha, it certainly divides the crowd. I think it’s definitely got in place, especially in winter, but as you say each to their own 👍🏻🎣
Tommy I was the same way as you until a few weeks ago - calm winter days at Rosslynlee and Allandale scratching for one bite all day.
Then I suspended a nymph under a big dry fly, and finally catching on that was really satisfying, and visual, and didn't feel like I was going to hell.
Then I started asking myself the really awkward questions: is suspending a nymph with deer hair or CDC with a hook attached really any different?
I couldn't beat them so I joined them. Already for me it's just another method that has its place.
Anyway thanks for these vids Chris, excellent clear explanations and no BS.
Tight lines both!
Great video, are your egg flies weighted at all please?
Thanks David. Yes, the majority on that day just with a 3.8mm brass bead, but I do have smaller eggs with small tungsten beads too, as sometimes small works best 👍🏻
Just found your channel mate, all I can say is wow.! Absolute top quality filming and narration, very informative, really enjoyable watch. Last time I fished there must have been 2002, water clarity has improved massively it was like hot chocolate that day but I still managed 2 rainbows and a golden.
Do they still have the picture of the police car that slid into the water in the ticket hut.? 😂
Thanks Andrew! Appreciate the kind words. I’ve only been twice, and the water has been gin clear both times. I never noticed the picture of the police car?? 😂 definitely one I will be asking Jimmy about next time I go down! 🤔
Brill as always
Thanks mate! 👍🏻
Great video about fishing the bung and other methods, I still haven't mastered the bung fishing yet.
Tried it at Allendale and nothing not even a touch but other anglers either side of me were having a great day fishing.
Going to give it one more go on Rosslynlee at the end of the month, then thats me till next year.............
I liked the look of your box for caring your fishing gear. Which model of box is it please.?
Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos.
Tight lines and stay safe
Thanks Bill! As we get into winter the bung will become more effective, let me know how you get on! The box I carry my gear in is the Shakespeare seat box, good for on the boat but bulky for the bank! I need to carry my filming gear too so it’s a must! Thanks again for the kind words 👍🏻
Another belting video Chris thanks ...I fished Kalzie a few weeks ago it’s a beautiful venue. Have you got a link for the seagar line ? And are you selling any of your own flies matey ?
Thanks mate, yeah it’s a lovely wee place to just have a nice relaxing day 👍🏻 you can get seaguar here - www.anglingactive.co.uk/seaguar-grand-max-fluorocarbon.html?ps=NTQwPTkxNw==&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5eX7BRDQARIsAMhYLP-6wAR5R3U3KwmMhI2v-rSjsQvklRAdDTHoQy54aoCD-p0mxGV9LK8aAt_7EALw_wcB#540=917
But plenty other places too. Yeah I’m considering starting a website to sell some flies on a small scale, and hope to launch it soon. Drop me a note to thetroutflyfisherman@gmail.com with what kind of flies you are after and I will see if I can sort something out 👍🏻
How often would you say the bung is your most successful tactic in these situations? How quickly do you change the flies? Do you ever wiggle the bung to get some action into your flies?
In flat calm conditions it’s nearly always the most productive method. If there is any wind, then other tactics can prevail, but just really depends on the day. In winter the bung is deadly when it’s very cold for example. But if it’s windy then it’s a lot less effective. I tend to change the flies after 15 mins of no interest at a specific spot. I never retrieve or move the bung, unless it’s to simply move it closer then let it settle. I find it’s more effective that way. It will drift even in little wind, and the slower the better 👍🏻
Really good video , do you tie off the bend of the hook or leave a tag For bottom fly ?
Thanks mate! I tie a dropper on, in the same way I do on this video th-cam.com/video/-wZRQI4rI-w/w-d-xo.html. 👍🏻
Hi, would you be able to replace the bung with a large any fly? Cheers I Cameron
Absolutely mate, any floating fly will do, as long as you can see it and it stays floating. Only downside is that you need it on a dropper, so can’t adjust depth as easy, but I do often do this too. Cheers, Chris
@@TheTroutFlyFisherman thanks, sorry, just realised I didn't correct my post to say dry fly. But yeah, I was wondering about the lack of ability to change depth. Thanks again for the reply. Love your videos 👍
@@arcticpack - no worries, and glad to enjoy them!
Great video. Where do you get your barbless flies from?
Thanks James! I tie them up myself, and I use the flybox barbless hooks mainly, they are great quality. I am considering launching a website to sell some flies to help invest in the channel, on a small scale, but watch this space! 👍🏻
Just crush the barbs as I do
Another great video were you fishing the bung static or moving it very slowly can't remember if you said wot tactics you used
Thanks Robert! I was fishing it static, zero movement was most effective. If I didn’t get a bite after a couple of minutes, I would very slowly retrieve for about 6ft and then let everything settle again to fish a different spot. Every fish took it static 👍🏻
Do u ever play the fish on the reel ?
Yeah if it’s a big fish, say 8 pound or over then I tend to go straight on the reel to control using the drag. Anything under that I’m happy enough to play off the reel 👍🏻
were you using a weighted damsel early on ?
Hi Martin, yes, a weighted damsel on a floating line in and around the margins - catches me so many fish doing so when turning up first thing and fish are hanging around the edges 👍🏻
@@TheTroutFlyFisherman thanks I just finished my first season as a fly fisherman :)
@@IrishSpursFan - nice one Martin! The first of many! 🎣
I just bung it when it's mirror flat like this, with a longer leader
Kailzie is back open again after previous owner retired. Get yourself back down, fishing very well.
