I feel like First Dates New Zealand is the only one that makes zero effort to match people up based on their interests & preferences; it often feels very random.
It's their first season. Even the original UK season was patchy in the first year

The American and Canadian ones make really odd matches at times too

@@fatcatontario It's all about the timing and phrasing. A quick and cheerful "let's split this" by her will let him know where things stand, giving him an opportunity to make an informed decision.

At the end, I saw a flash of pain on the guys face when the girl said she didn't want to see him again. He seemed to really like her, did a quick recovery. If they are staying in touch, they still might see each other again in the future.

for everyone freaking out about women letting their date pay when it's a no go, consider that it's $50 spent on the man looking kind and generous for life, internationally.
She is average looking and has a strange quirk with the mermaid's tail. She really should have given him a second date. By the way, I think he was interested, he just said what he said at the end to save face.

It's obvious she was ran through by all sort of big boy muscly surfer Chads. It's where she spends most of her time, at the beach. And she was also interested if he was high value and aspiring to an early retirement (aka having or making a lot of money). - none of the things he qualified for. He could have compensated by beng more manly and confident, but he wasn't even a poor Chad either. I feel bad for him but not surprised. She was way too hypergamous for him.
It was really distatesful of her, though, when she clearly knew she didn't fancy him but had him pay anyway. Men should never pay for a date unless they have secured that date by the end of the date.
But then again, I have no sympathy for him for falling for this easy trick (to pay for the dinner).
Agreed. Too many women are just treating dating as a hobby, getting the free meal and attention, and the man wastes his time and money.

She’s a surfer, getting odd jobs at resorts. That’s fun in your early twenties, but she’s getting older now. If she doesn’t marry a wealthy man, let’s be feasible, where will her source of income come from? She’s not got a steady source of one.

Oh man! I'm disappointed - I was sure they wanted to see each other again! I thought they were a pretty good match lookswise (both attractive, I thought - but what do I know?). And I thought they were both nice, interesting people, who got on well and had plenty to talk about. But maybe her phone conversation in the washroom, saying that he was just like her high school boyfriend, should have been a strong hint to me that she wasn't that into him. The light at the end of the tunnel is where they state at the end that she is trying to set him up with one of her girlfriends. Maybe love will triumph, after all!

Guys should take the lead and say no first. Be a man. Girls should be more insistent on splitting the bill, if not interested. You want equal rights only when it benefits you.
