    What does it cost to own a BMW X5 E70? Well, there's the initial cost, and then there's the cost of ownership. Well, here's all of my last 5 years' costs and therefore I'm showing you my cost of ownership.
    The #BMW X5 E70 also has some regular maintenance costs that go into the #cost of #ownership, but the larger items are the big ticket failures that you'll see here in the video.

    Been driving BMW for 17 years. I am a mechanic of 20 years. It’s nothing to me. I buy 1 year old certified. And I warranty every little thing before the warranty ends. My tip.... Buy your advisor a Starbucks gift card and for the mechanic. Goes a long way! I had brakes warrantied only because the advisor told me I always give him Starbucks gift cards and it’s no skin off his back. Nice video!

    Thanks for the video. @ $2000/year I think you are still ahead of the game. Can't think of a comparable vehicle that could be had for $167/mo. Wife and I have owned our X5d e70 now for 2.5 years and have, fortunately, not had to spend near the money you have to keep it on the road. We have done a few of the repairs you mention, glow plugs/module, full front/rear brake service, and replaced tires once. Done the complete front suspension and cooling system as well, but I do all the work on the car. I think we've spent ~$2500 US or ~$84/mo. About half your monthly expense when you break it down. BMW's are certainly expensive to maintain if you are paying a shop to fix your car. I never recommend them to anyone unwilling or unable to work on their own vehicles unless in warranty from BMW. They are incredible vehicles (we've had near 15 of them), but come with their own maintenance schedules and design flaws. Thanks again for the video, hopefully it opens the eyes of potential X5d buyers as to how expensive they can be.

    I have a 2009 BMW 3.0sd which Im driving almost everyday (I own it almost 5/6 years). The biggest cost it made to me was 1500TL (300dollars for a ball mill). All I do is filters changing etc just like every other regular car.. If you can find a clean well drived X5 theres no need to be afraid of that it will make you spend much money on it. Great video and thanks for sharing. I have a 2013 BMW X5 35i Premium. Bought it 74k miles in 2018 and just approaching 100k. I've spent less than 5k so far on tires and suspension and oil changes. Best vehicle I've ever owned! I know I will eventually start getting some kind of codes. Some who can afford it buy BMWs new or lease them and get rid of them after lease ends or vehicle gets to that 50-70k mark. That's really the only way to avoid getting nailed with the bigger maintenance costs. But either way your gonna pay up front or pay on the backend for the used. Just have the savings built up.

    I drove BMW's almost exclusively for 35 years.
    Every one I bought was less reliable then the one I had previously.
    BMW service in my area is both incompetent and expensive.
    I bought two Buicks...Yes Buicks!
    A 2019 Regal GS and a 2018 Regal Tour X.
    Both are rebadged Opel Insignia's and they drive 90% as well as a BMW at 60% of the cost.
    Service is competent and reasonably priced.
    I thought I would miss my Ultimate Driving Machine but BMW hasn't deserved the moniker for years.
    Also BMW's have become as common as bellybuttons.
    Everybody has one.
    Both of my Buick's are fairly rare and I have gotten several compliments on both.

    Very good. My 2008 was a money pit. Lights were constantly coming on. I was afraid to drive it, wondering which light would come on next. Mechanic said to get rid of it quick, the head gaskets were about to need replacing. This, just after replacing valve covers, starter, water pump, oil pan, and dealing with a microscopic oil leak that could not be fixed.

    You've probably saved anywhere from $800 to $2,000 per year in fuel costs by driving the Diesel, depending on how much you drive. Not only Diesel is around 20% cheaper than the 95 octane gas (at least in Canada, where I also live) but also this X5 diesel consumption is 30% less than the gas powered version.
    For example if you drive 20K a year, you need roughly 1500 liters of diesel @1.2, that is $1,800; the gas version would need 2200 liters @1.4 that is $3,080.
    3,080 - 1,800 = $1,280 in Savings, that is HUGE in my accounting books!

    • @steveknight9254
      @steveknight9254 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, in the USA (I’m canadian btw) they seem to charge a 30cent premium per gallon which is bizarre from my viewpoint because in Canada it is about the same. For long distance touring and economy there is no better choice. I’m a diesel guy anyways so you are preaching to the choir. There may be a little extra maintenance when it comes to diesel complexity but n my books it is worth it.

  • @grzegorzgrotkowski6575
    @grzegorzgrotkowski6575 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi there! Thank you for great content! You were really meticulous with your accountancy. I appreciate honesty as it's not something everyone is capable of while in love with their car 😉 Anyways, I can see one comment after another saying it's so bad and so on and blah blah blah, but than again, how many of them (commentators) are so precise to keep the record of tires cost in Hyundai? The main thing here (talking about BMW cars) is that we should compare apples to apples and keep that in mind. Compare BMW to Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover. Comparing BMW to Toyota (or other Vietnamese products) makes only sense in the area of wheels number or the top speed, but not the driving quality. Yes I know Lexus IS good, and Infinity but it's a whole different ride. I am not saying that you did that but reading the comments... well, some people do that. On the other hand, from what you said, seems you have stumbled on some sort of engineering incompetence as some parts were apparently changed in the manner of "looking for the fault on the owner's expense". This might pump up the total cost in significant way as we cannot exclude additional faults built up on the faulty service. Authorized BMW service is always good at warranty service but not much more than that, oh maybe, except tripling the labor cost available anywhere else - this, they're brilliant at 😀

Just a couple of questions 1. What do you get average in litres per 100km? 2. You didn’t mention fuel filters either do you do that? I’m similar to you where I do some jobs but other big hassle jobs not. 3. What do you think of the 2018? It’s the last model year the diesel was available sadly. I own an 2013 BMW X1. Paid $8500 for it two years ago and have paid out nearly $6300 in repairs and maintenance over the last 17 months. Most of the money ($4200) was consumed in my initial major service when I directed my mechanic to repair everything that was identified in the inspection report. A week later I shelled out $600 for a new set of tires. Another large outlay of about $1000 came six months later when the radiator sprung a leak and had to be replaced. The used BMW will almost always be the cheapest element of your BMW experience.

    We bought a Hyundai matrix in 2002. Due to economic difficulties with my dad's business and later with the global economic crisis, we could not maintain it properly. We were barely able to change oil and even that we did sparingly. This car has now gone way past the 350k km mark. The engine burns oil and it has fairly bad compression due to neglect and abuse all these years, and the car is quite beat up overall, but so far we haven't dropped more than 3k for maintenance in the 19 years we own it, and I am fairly positive we have never spent more than 100 euros on failures(which were completely minor interior electrics). My point being, why is a car costing 15k at most less prone to problems than a car costing multiple times that? Why paying more doesn't guarantee me a quality product? I mean, I know that a bigger more powerful car needs more expensive parts to work properly, but damn make them last, Gee! Anyway we got a second matrix used from 2004, over 160k km on it. Couple of things broke from the previous owner, we fixed, barely 200 bucks. It's expected to go for years.

Specially the coolant leak, oil leak. Finally had to let it go. As it had radiator leak. Probably had other problems too. Wanted to fix it but decided to let it go. I did not fix it because I had to change run flat tiers every year. One mechanic told me the car is slightly blend in the middle which is causing inner tier getting bad faster. 😢. I miss that car.

    Ok so you bought a use BMW yhat waa 5 years old. And during those 5 years or cost you an additional $10.000.00. Every video that I've watch about BMW tells me to NOT purchase a used BMW. And after warranty get another one. Can you do a video on this topic. And what the averages cost will be after the warranty. Thanks.

      I just replaced the passenger rear air suspension bag on my bmw e70 35d @ a cost of e350 supply and fitted. Now when the car is parked over night , the airbag in my opinion deflates. Mechanic said it meant to go to sleep when the car is not running. However it does pump up when you turn on ignition and drives perfectly with no warning light as regard suspension on dash. My hunch tells me mechanic has done a botched job as there’s still an air leak when vehicle is parked overnight. Please can you or anyone on this platform advise.

      One thing a lot of people are not mentioning is he bought the car for what? Probably less than 1/2 the cost of new got a fairly new car with very low depreciation costs. If the maintenance costs are next to zero on a new car you pay hugely for the privilege of driving a new car. It’s probably 20,000$ that first year. I’m prepared to have some hassle and for it to cost me a bit more to save on my true cost of driving; THE DEPRECIATION! To each his own. PT Barnum was right a fool and his money are soon parted!

    Great video, thank you. I´m just in a process of buying an X5. Regarding the tire change - you didnt mention how many km you do a year. I had to change mine summer tires on 740xd after only one year. They lasted for 20 -30 thousand km. And as for the total cost of owning, it sums up to be just 2.400 CAD a year, and that I consider extremely cheap :)

    So I’ve had my 2009 BMW X5 diesel for almost 2 years and I’ve spent $3500 on it so far. I’ve had a $6500 quote for 3 fuel injectors and all glow plugs, the bulkhead compartment but supposingly I brought it to another mechanic and he said they don’t have to be changed just cleaned. A month after I’ve had a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT come on and I brought it to the dealer and he said I can’t seem to find anything but there’s a lot of carbon built up, you should drive on the highway. Two weeks later the CEL is still on. I don’t like going to BMW dealership because they charge too much for just looking at the vehicle. Any advice?

    • @faBian6114
      @faBian6114 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like o2 sensor or if it is carbon you need to red line the car floor it on the highway a few times take it to a place that will clear the code for free or TH-cam how to clear the code at home then see what happens I would do the sensor last as that will cost money

    When you own a used car you should expect to pay half of what it would cost to own a new car. Ie 12 x monthly payment/2= yearly cost. If you expect to pay nothing to drive after you pay off a car you’re not realistic.
    $2000 / year is realistic.
    The real question is what was the cost per year as COMPARED TO OTHER CARS. If BMW is more then you have a story. Right now you’ve told me nothing useful and you can’t even say if BMW is too high COMPARED TO OTHER CARS. you are just saying it cost you a lot. So get a bike.

      I appreciate Mark putting this up because I’m considering buying an X5 diesel so this is very useful to me, it makes me comfortable about taking that risk of buying an “exotic” BMW. From my experience maintaining an older Honda and I’m like Mark I track my maintenance costs VERY closely am handy and do some of my own work myself. I had a rule of thumb where it was about 100$ CAD per month to drive that car. Granted I drove 20,000km and later 30,000 km per year (we moved). It turns out the more you drive it the more it costs because some items are triggered by distance. ANYWAYS that rule of this as time went by is probably more like 150$ or even 200$ per month. There is a Bathtub principal in owning used cars where the cost goes down at say 1-2 years and spikes back up at say 12-15 years. I generally buy my used cars at 3-4 years and sell at 12-15 years to take advantage of that low sweet spot on the maintenance curve. At the end things like brake and tranny lines and structural issues come up so I now don’t hold for 15 years because I’ve been burnt (financially) by a money pit car. That is what this post is all about. THANKS MARK. I’m a diesel guy (VW) and an thinking of buying one of f these in the last model year (2018) any thoughts. They hopefully worked out the kinks of that generation of chassis. (I always like to give the manufacturer at least a couple of years to work out the kinks!)

      Just going to say, I’m here researching the e70 to replace my wife’s total POS Toyota Highlander with there government forced abs actuator recall failure that covers only 2 of the 5 years they used the defective part. $3k repair. It’s a hybrid with a 2 year old replacement battery I’m scared will fail at anytime or the inverter that failed in previous years but supposedly not her year that would cost $12k to fix. I’m a very happy e60 550 owner and I’ve concluded that at least the BMW is worth fixing while the noisy slow tin can time bomb Toyota is not. Other obvious fact here is that at least BMW acknowledges when they have a issue, extend the warranty and update the failure prone part when they have issues with there cutting edge technology while Toyota will spend millions on lawyers trying to deny obvious liability. Government has had to step in anytime Toyota has had issues......For what it’s worth.

      James McKinney the X5 50i xdrive is the one to stay away from. Fun, and fast as hell but that model has the most issues. The older 3.0 is bulletproof, and the 35i from 2011 and newer are also bulletproof. Older then that have HPFP problems but if that was addressed (recall preformed) they are also bulletproof. We ended up with a 2013 x5 35i xdrive and couldn’t be happier
