I own a 2012 BMW diesel this vehicle is awesome. I got it CPO at 35,000 miles. It now has $117,000. Going strong. I will tell you it has amazing interior and lots of bells and whistles…heated seats/dual climate/great cameras (one of the best). I get compliments on this ALL the time. I have had one major repair (transfer case :(. I don’t care. Paid for and hope to keep it 300,000
I have a 2013 that I got in October 2016, CPO from a BMW dealer, coming off of lease. When I got it, it had 29300 miles, now has 77200 miles. My impressions are much as yours. I am in Vermont, where it is almost as cold as Canada. I believe I am still on the original AGM battery. When the Bridgestone run flats wore out, I replaced them with Nokian Zline all season tires, non run flat, and everything improved. I do have a factory spare tire option. The only failure I have had that left me stranded was the grounding cable to the engine failed, and so the vehicle would not start. I also had a problem with non winterized fuel, but that was my fault, not the car's fault. The two turbo set up on my 265 hp engine results in minimal turbo lag. Fuel economy for such a big heavy vehicle is outstanding, and handling is BMW sharp for a SUV.
Just picked up a 09 X5 with only 60,000 miles on it... love it, mines the regular 6 cylinder with the sports package and winter package... I hear the 8 cylinder is a nightmare so I’m glad I have the 6.... hoping to get at least 70,000 miles out of it with no major repairs.
The torque rise at 2,000 is incredible! 35 mpg might be good but my Ford Focus gas got 50, which was better than my wife's Prius! I do believe that the BMW engine may outlast either one of the others so, all in all, a great overall vehicle.
The torque spec from the manufacturer is claiming 425ft/lbs. But BMW admitted that the x5 e70 diesel is over polluting by 15%. This being said. My old VW Jetta with the 2.0L diesel was over polluting by 40%. VW claimed on those engines the torque was 236ft/lbs. a TH-camr from Colorado dynode the Jetta and they had to trick the car into thinking it was on the open road to bypass the emissions test and the torque rating jumped to almost 270ft/lbs. Horse power was what they claimed roughly. I think the x5 e70 has more torque than BMW is admitting to. My old 09 ml320 bluetec had 401ft/lbs and was fun to drive but my BMW will every time plant you to the back of your seat when you punch it. Like my old Jetta the BMW has a higher fun factor to it. Sadly Mercedes and Volkswagen/Audi no longer sells diesel in Canada. It’s a real shame Mercedes didn’t sell there E series’s Bluetec/hybrid here in Canada. It went from Morocco to England on one tank of diesel. You gotta love Politics, economics and manufacture BS. It all goes hand in hand. Once you do enough research. You become aware how hard you get slapped in the face with the lies. Sorry for the huge soap box comment here. You’ve made a few mistakes here and there. But over all I find your videos pretty good. Hope to see more.
Hi, John, soap box is good, and I understand the passion. The diesels are great power machines and it is unfortunate that many are going away. They are easy to modify and the fuel economy, even if not as rated, is spectacularly good. I know VW was a bit shifty in their ratings, but what manufacturer does not BS about some aspect of numbers from fuel economy that you or I could never achieve to tow ratings to , in some cases power whether they claim high or low. Thanks again.
Your style of presenting & communicating your factual experience with the 2009 X5 XDrive D35 was so sincere, & in such a " just being yourself " type of enthusiasm about the X5, I would doubt there's anybody on Planet Earth that could communicate about any vehicle, as well as you can !!! Impressive X's 10 !!! Btw, I own the exact 2009 X5 that you do !!! Nice Shooting !!!!
Thank you very much Todd, that really is greatly appreciated and it means a lot to have support like that. These are great vehicles and I believe better than many people give them credit for.
killer review. mine is on the way to Rhode Island from Texas right now and I am very excited. 2012 with 111,600 miles. broken in for sure but I want it to last a real long time. also, accent is an amazing cross between Darren pang and Barry melrose. love it
Great video. One question...i've heard some reviews complain about the ride, especially on rough roads. Any comment on that? I have a 3-series from this generation (e91) and I love it. Best car I've ever owned.
i got one of these cars.. best ever car I've had. what you said was bang on… these cars are bullet proof as far as I'm concerned. mines a diesel why buy petrol when the torque blows petrol ones out the water. yes tyres are expensive but the best…. 2nd hand these cars are bloody cheap compared to anything else out there….. great on fuel all the bells and whistles too. I've had porsches (nice and expensive) mercs (junk) But in the end 2nd hand budget well built car you can't beat it..
I have a. 2009 x5 diesel . Drove about 5000 miles a year . Currently 62000 miles . Last year check engine light came on and found out issues with exhaust and urea . I was quoted 7000 dollars for the whole job so it will pass emission inspection .BMW was of no help as the car was over10 years old . I had regularly serviced the car and actually changed the oil every 5000 miles and topped off the urea tank every service visit . Check engine light came in again 3 months later , issues with the urea tank . They want another 3500 dollars to. Fix it . That is over 10000 dollars . Totally disgusted with BMW. Customer support the car is total junk . Please use caution when purchasing diesel bmw .
We have taken it to two different. dealers and contacted BMW , of no help . BMW knows of this x5 diesel emissions issues and refuses to do any thing about it . BMW. X5. Diesel has issues which BMW has refused to correct . Buy X5 Diesel at your own peril . There are better and more reliable options out there .
I love my e70 3.0SI. I really wanted the diesel but they didn't have one on the lot. I bought a warranty and am I glad I did, three weeks after purchase a rod knock occurred. ended up needing a new engine and my repair bill was $25,900 for a new engine. would really recommend having one without warranty or deep pockets. still wouldn't want anything else. great video
Wish you had given more quantitative data. You mentioned you had the car for five years and listed what repairs came up... but no mention of how many kilometers you put on the car in that time, and how much those repairs cost. Some people will put 25,000 km on their vehicles in five years, other people will do 75 or even 100,000 km. Do glow plugs cheap? Easy to service yourself? Did you have to pay soemone to do it? How much did that cost? Wish we had more info here...
This is so true for my X5 E70 40D in Australia its great . Go semi auto at the lights some times! and leave every thing for dead . like a Ford FPV F6 Typhoon . It was flaming out the exhaust for 500 mtr after I backed off. I thought he would catch fire! Beat him thru 1, 2, 3 gears. Then to far over the speed limit I backed off: He was spitting chips. I have no DPF fitted and use EGR & cat cleaner to keep the system clean and performing. Yes fuel was 7.5 ltr /km Brisbane to Melbourne except for hills 8.4. city 8.7 to 9.1 ltr great. 195,00 km on the clock had it since 100,000. Issues hunting drive train front and rear diffs in smooth concrete car parks. just replaced transfer case oil perfect again. Change all oil diffs . looked up auto change over unit to get info for future: Kit for solenoids piston and selector arm in the bottom of earbox . solenoids have identifier number so does case photo id the parts and get a replacement for gear box issues $ 1,000 + not 10,000. lots of servo mechanics in it but can be cheap with the right knowledge. for warned for armed! I am confident for my future use.
I have had a x6 08plate fir a year and its fab on DIESEL gets 40 on a run 25 round town 3.0 lt, when you open the doors the glow plugs engage start working and the engine is Direct injection diesel you need to change the glow plugs every now and again and the O2 sensor how to make the DPF filter work to make it clean you also may need a glow plug control unit it's good to change all three at the same time I'm and then do a 50 of 60 mile trip and a DPF filter will start working as it should clean
Thansk for great video. Can you tell us how many miles does it have on it now? My 2012 X5 35d has 65k. I did a search of X5 35d on car guru and found several with 200k plus miles
Thanks for the review, it may be worth you dumping those runflats for a set of conventional tubeless and getting a spare, a jack and brace, and a set of gloves.
Every auto is a machine & as such will have maintenance & repairs needed along the line. That said, given the # of k's you've put on this vehicle & given the fact you live in a very cold climate I'd say you've had outstanding performance out of your X5. I've that more issues out of more than 1 Honda I've owned from brand new & WAY more issues out of every American car I've ever owned (most purchased brand new). Thanks for the perspective on your X5 35d experience.
Had to replace rear diff seals at 110klms and had a slight leak in the power steering pump has to be fixed you have to replace the fu pump because no one sells the pump seal kit .Also door trim seams to be wearing away seams to react to a chemical reaction to skin as it is on the arm rest of the door. Excellent fuel consumption but never loaded it up this is a 2011 x5 diesel E70
Hi Mark , I have been watching your videos from this channel for a long time. Recently, I am really insterested in purchasing a F15 2017 bmw x5 35d (with 70000km). Is the the N57 diesel engine reliable ? I live in toronto by the way. This x5 still has warranty with it which will expire on this September, is it necessary to get the bmw 7 years/ 120000km extention warranty ? Also, I did some research on this model and found that its fuel system required replacement if you add bad diesel fuel. (potentially 10k cost fix) Is the regular shell diesel fuel good enough for the bmw x35d ? Hope you would give me some suggestions or tips through your bmw diesel experience. Really appreciated.
Just wondering, do you drive short trips with this diesel suv? How is the particulate filter? Did you ever have to change it? How many miles does does the x5 have?
If the engine cuts are every now and again like when you're reversing or something it means the high pressure fuel pump the seal has gone inside it and it's not holding pressure so you need a new pump in the UK BMW as one around £3,000 fitted but you can get one much cheaper and I fitted it myself using the timing tool key because it runs off the timing chain it's not hard to do it took me around and one day and I was not rushing and it was done on the floor
Ardalan Shabestari why is that considering it’s the same engine? Seems like there’s still more power to be extracted from the European models without even any mechanical mods. I don’t think they would detune the us models to comply with emissions as there’s plenty of gas guzzlers about that are way more polluting than this.
The Installer Guy i think it’s because the american government wouldn’t accept unless bmw accepted their terms. And gas guzzler is something and diesel is something totally different. Americans get ad blue technology that is pure shit. Detuned engines and heavy duty DPFs. In europe with just a tune 360hp. And they run forever. Their only problems are glowplugs brake when taking out at 130k miles and EGR getting clogged at high high mileage (how you drive the car)
Did you end up getting the bmw? The gx470 might drink gas but it's so cheap to maintain compared to the bmw that unless you drive a bunch of miles a year you will only break even. I am telling you this from an owner of both.. if I had to keep one till I died it would be the gx470.. unless your in Europe where gas is $8 a gallon.. then you might win in a bmw.
I'm thinking of getting a BMW with a diesel engine, but I live in NH it gets very cold sometimes -20 or -30F and I'm a believer in fuel additives. Do you add any in winter?
John Gaudet red line or stanodyne. Some ppl say that an amount of two stroke oil does it too. I want ti learn more. The red line and stan did great on my vw tdi. That car got me over 300 k miles of heavy driving.
Do you still have the x5? I'm looking into getting one as well. I'm from Toronto and was wondering is there a 🔌 that is installed to plug in for those cold nights?
5300 spot welds. Rivets, glue, brazing and mig welds hold this thing together. This was the largest vehicle E Coated at the time that went through a complete flip front to back in the paint process.
Hi, great content, thanks! I have a 2008 X5 with the 4.8i, 70,000 miles, leaking oil and now starting to run rough due to leaky injector. Dealership gave me a $13,000 estimate to fix(no joke), any thoughts on if I should sell, i love the truck for the same reason’s, but these costs are prohibitive, and the future looks bleak what with the valve stem seals and all. I live in the Northeast and would love to keep. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again!
Heard these things are problematic like most bmw’s and the dpf system is a nightmare to deal with and better off to spend 3k+ to just remove it all together
BMW X5 BMW X6 both these vehicles both the back lights leak water into the boot and it can short out all your wiring so check this especially on the driver side as you have a lot of black boxes that cost a lot ect common PROBLEM,, TAKECARE BRO
Great review--I'm in the market and doing the research. What's that ticking sound when you make sharp turns? I didn't think BMWs came with turn signals! :)
Hi there. I just enjoyed watching your x5 review. I live in the Philippines and trying to find which year models are the best. Here with the heat maybe different issues to yours. Min temp 25 degrees and max 45!!!! I've always wanted an x5 and here there's plenty of used ones and typically low kms. Any knowledge on pre or after 2013? That seems to be the year things changed.? Thanks Tony
Great video. I have a 2016 X5D which is currently at 161,000 kms. I love it. It is well maintained and taken care of. I have read elsewhere that they can go up two 200K miles. Wondering what your thoughts are? I appreciate this is a subjective determination. The reason why I ask is because I thinking of swapping it out for a newer model. Thanks in advance.
I agree. Sadly it’s the same reason everyone wants an automatic transmission . The great cars are ignored by the masses, even though the enthusiasts know where the gems are.
Are you still holding on to the E70, I have driven many cars now maybe just me but I find the steering to be really precise and communicative, the weighting is meaty its spot on.
I have a X5 2011 diesel now has 230,000km it's been in the shop for 3 weeks, put in repair bills around $ 15,000 in the last month. I am just waiting to get rid of it. BMW did not want to sell me extended warranty. They knew problems( expensive problems are commig.. I was happy with it until 200,000km but now just problems. Be aware.
No, I have a 335i but I'm looking to pick up a used X5 and I needed to find a review form someone who actually owned the car long term. This was just what I was looking for.
Although owing a both Mercedes 80's 300 class & a Bimmer 2000's x5 . I can't really compare cus back in 70's-90's German car were in the pinnacle of long term material quality but I will say that Mercedes 1st Gen ML class SUV felt cheap compared to the E53
Here in Europe 35d is twin turbo diesel with 286hp, after which comes 40d with 306hp and top of the line 50d triple turbo with 381hp. These twin turbo engines eliminated turbo lag almost completely, as one turbo is smaller and gives power in low end. This 35d in US seems to be 30d in Europe which is single turbo, strange, but it's not the first time BMW has done that.
I would NEVER buy another BMW Diesel. They all have emissions issues to the tune of thousands of dollars. I have a 2012 E70 X5 35d and I have had multiple check engine lights having to do with emissions and spent a ton at the dealer. This is the 2nd BMW X5d I've had and the other had the same problems. Also had a 328d and again, multiple emissions issues with the diesel engine. I'm going with a gas one.
Mine has 115,000kms I got it a month ago, already have stuff breaking like sunroof won’t close, and now it’s in the shop because the electrician shift lever won’t go in to drive or reverse, air vent is broken from just tuning it away from my face. total cost with out sun roof and air vent $3,000 smh. So far she’s been a headache. And I have to get all this done by the dealer ship because they have to do special programming for the stupid shifter to work in the car, not like every other car and slap in a used one. Can’t believe a component that is most used would fail out of no where.
Sadly a washed car stays clean where I live for about 12 hours and if it rains, the car gets dirty again. Thanks for the comments though and a do like to keep a clean car

Hi, great presentation. I am actually in the market for an X5 35D. Great job, keep posting your reviews.
Thanks a lot Bryan I will do for sure. Cheers.
The diesel I6 is 265hp and 425 lb ft

I just got off work and watching your video before I head home-- speaking of temp its 88.6 BELOW in certain parts of Russia
Hi, Quick question, do you know where is the DPF pressure sensor located?
Just wondering, do you drive short trips with this diesel suv? How is the particulate filter? Did you ever have to change it? How many miles does does the x5 have?
We do some short trips but not many and my dpf has been ok. We currently have about 125,000 miles on the suv
Did you buy the warranty when bought that diesel x5? I want to buy used one, but price is insane with warranty.
We did not
@@ECPP so you are confident about the car reliability. Didn't you worry about what if your car may broken when you bought it?
it s not the turbo lag, IT S BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT IN SPORTS MODE, so the engine is in low rpm and does not shift back at all.
Great point.
Not all models have sport mode, his doesn’t. And sport mode only changes the suspension and steering.
My experience shows Sports Mode changing the shift points also
BMW is best car. ABS very good
Nice
AWESOME REVIEW AND COMPARISON TO THE MERCEDES...
Glad you like them!
Nice. The diy is great and that’s how a person can save big bucks
i think the 35d has more power 271 bhp and 425 ft/ibs of torque the 30d has 235hp and 383 torque
great review though
Riyan it has 286bhp
european models had 286. but americans have 240ish
You’ve convinced me, I’m going to sell my gx470 for one of these oil burners 👍🏻 30MPG vs Lexus 17MPG
You may want to watch my latest video
Did you end up getting the bmw? The gx470 might drink gas but it's so cheap to maintain compared to the bmw that unless you drive a bunch of miles a year you will only break even. I am telling you this from an owner of both.. if I had to keep one till I died it would be the gx470.. unless your in Europe where gas is $8 a gallon.. then you might win in a bmw.
I wish you had mentioned price wise these repairs
Price wise of the repairs: Cutting off both your legs and arms and selling you home and kids!
A dumb question, I am thinking of buying a 2008 X5 3.0si. Is that engine more reliable than the Diesel one you have? Thanks!
Good review man. Thanks.
Thanks a lot for watching
30d has less turbo lag and more low end torque I've been told
40d has 2 turbos but also less turbo lag and it has more power👍
Question Mark, I owned 2010 x5 xdrive d35 so the engine would be E70? Just like your x5!
Yes that is the same as mi r and is the E70
Engine is m57 chassis is e70
I'm thinking of getting a BMW with a diesel engine, but I live in NH it gets very cold sometimes -20 or -30F and I'm a believer in fuel additives. Do you add any in winter?
John Gaudet red line or stanodyne. Some ppl say that an amount of two stroke oil does it too. I want ti learn more.
The red line and stan did great on my vw tdi. That car got me over 300 k miles of heavy driving.
Because of you, I had amazing e70 3.0d with 235Hp.... But man, you have a lot more than that, because 3.5d have 286Hp (Europe) or 265Hp (USA).
A fantastic review!! THANKS!!
Do you still have the x5? I'm looking into getting one as well. I'm from Toronto and was wondering is there a 🔌 that is installed to plug in for those cold nights?
Hey Mark.
How about transmission flash? Are you not going to do that?
5300 spot welds. Rivets, glue, brazing and mig welds hold this thing together. This was the largest vehicle E Coated at the time that went through a complete flip front to back in the paint process.
I love the X5
@@ECPP I used to make them.
thank you. good review
Go to a different mechanic lol. A leaky injector really isn't a huge repair.
Europcar Morristown NJ
Comprehensive review excellent presentation
Thanks Marcus. Cheers
Why do they have to replace all run flats? That’s weird no?
If overall wear is more than a certain amount and because it is all wheel drive.
Can I swap M57 Diesel into E70 BMW N52 Body ?
Hey Mark, I want this exact Engine on my next x5. Will you share this info please? Thanks in advance buddy.. great video 👍
They can patch a run flat with a nail in it as long as it's not on the side.
Any review on the gasoline version?
Gasoline version is just an X5 wannabe.
Heard these things are problematic like most bmw’s and the dpf system is a nightmare to deal with and better off to spend 3k+ to just remove it all together
you can buy an android aftermarket display and u get everything same as on your PHONE, youtube etc all working, and it s 300 us only. PLUG AND PLAY
That is true, thanks.
I drive a x5 E70 2013 35i in BC and its a highly luxurious vehicle for the price paid.
They are great and I love mine
BMW X5 BMW X6 both these vehicles both the back lights leak water into the boot and it can short out all your wiring so check this especially on the driver side as you have a lot of black boxes that cost a lot ect common PROBLEM,, TAKECARE BRO
For sure, moisture can destroy these cars quixkly
Great review--I'm in the market and doing the research. What's that ticking sound when you make sharp turns? I didn't think BMWs came with turn signals! :)
Nice
Great review!!
Thanks!
What is so special about run flat tyres as compared to conventional tyres?
Hi do you recomend tttyyy o buy a bmw x5 2010 used. V8 sport package
EGR and plug cost? I am looking for an E70
Don't know why diesel isn't being sold in North America. The new e class 220d will do 70mpg
Epa
......265hp and 425Ibft. Just saying.....
so what does that mean?
To the wheels or crank?
Lucky Bhamra 425 on crank. And 265 on wheels
I’m thinking my 2012 might just have a little more than that. Full delete and a Malone tune.
In Europe 35d has 286 hp actually
Change inlet manifold gaskets makes a big difference ,!! And gearbox oil change
For sure
Whatever you do don't not buy a used V8 gas model BMW car or SAV, unless you own a BMW dealer or repair shop. You've been warned!!!!
Maybe I will follow that advice. Thanks, cheers.
Is it still alive is the question now
It sure is. Have you seen my recent review on this?
Hi,
Would you recommend limited income people to buy a used petrol one?.
Many thanks,
Thanks a lot, appreciated.
Be aware.
no
Limited income folks should be looking at Toyotas
BMW = Breaking My Wallet!
Sometimes
Great review
No, I have a 335i but I'm looking to pick up a used X5 and I needed to find a review form someone who actually owned the car long term. This was just what I was looking for.
What year is it?
Test drove an 08 with 111k didn’t feel all that fast. My Yukon has more grunt
Here in Europe our 35d is 286 ps.. 30d is 245.. sucks for you guys i guess
True
Power steel is very hard. That is what I hated
Aye I’ve been looking at a 535 deezil but I think I’m aboot to look at some X5’s great vidyo man
Mine has 115,000kms I got it a month ago, already have stuff breaking like sunroof won’t close, and now it’s in the shop because the electrician shift lever won’t go in to drive or reverse, air vent is broken from just tuning it away from my face. total cost with out sun roof and air vent $3,000 smh. So far she’s been a headache. And I have to get all this done by the dealer ship because they have to do special programming for the stupid shifter to work in the car, not like every other car and slap in a used one. Can’t believe a component that is most used would fail out of no where.
BUY SOME ADVIL BECAUSE WILL BE MORE PROBLEMS LOL
2018 last x5 BMW was made
Cheers
265HP 425TQ
Cheers
It never will get 35 mpg on highway
On long drives, I find the seats to be uncomfortable.
what is a ... CD?
nice
Only 200hp? Thats it? My 01 honda prelude se had that much and it was a 2 dr sports car lol
💯
Def fluid
Diesel exhaust fluid fluid.
You bet. Thanks
ExoticCar PlayPlace I was being sarcastic. But good video. I like lengthy in depth reviews before I buy something. Thank you.
Can you message me privately from USA
just buy a set of normal tyres ffs.
From the video u look like u live in Alberta
1:10 Your power numbers are way off and made me not want to watch the rest of your vid. Facts FTW
TurboDieselDan mpg was way off. No where near that high
why is it so dirty? detailers are cheap nowadays.
Sadly a washed car stays clean where I live for about 12 hours and if it rains, the car gets dirty again. Thanks for the comments though and a do like to keep a clean car
@@ECPP I meant the inside.
e70 x5 not e60
True, this is definitely an E70 X5, I also have an E60 M5 to match with the same color. Great cars.
