  • 9 Years later, can BMW X5 E70 Diesel be the ultimate long trip/off road SUV? I thinks so! Here is the list of things that went wrong with the X5 Diesel in my 4 years of ownership:
    BMW X5 E70 Diesel Reliability:
DPF Active tank sensor - entire tank replaced under BMW extended warranty free
Idler pulley bolt - recall covered by BMW free
Throttle body valve actuator - DIY replaced myself , part roughly $150-$220
BMW X5 E70 Diesel Maintenance Cost
    Engine oil - $100 DIY
    Air Filter - cleanable K&N AF $65
DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) roughly every 10k mi - $13
    EGR Valve cleaning - $8

Picked up a ‘12 e70 gas last year. Currently just under 190k miles. It’s been a great car and is a tank for sure. I have done A TON of work to it with more to go but still no regrets. Solid, comfortable, and roomy.

Great video. It truly has everything you need in a vehicle. For the price you can pick them up at these days they make for a great utility workhorse with a whole lot of comfort to boot. I also feel like I am driving a tank when inside it. And my wife loves the ride height and comfort on the long road.

Absolutely love my E70 35d sport. The styling has totally stood the test of time. The issue with them is all the emissions junk hanging off the motor. DPF, DEF Tanks, EGR stuff. Without those problem areas this rig could easily be one of the best SUVs ever made in terms of handling, power, fuel economy & reliability. I have to admit though, the problem items are scary when they go bad..... easily can cost more to fix than the car is worth.

Congratulations on the wonderful review, I gladly watched it all. I find myself having to change cars and for need I will focus on an SUV, I like the BMW x5 as much, too much like yours, I even prefer it to the series after 2014. The problem with these cars is that here in Italy they are found few, those few cost a lot and I am not sure that the kilometers are certified, what would you do would you recommend this car the 30 / 35d with 130.000 kilometers or even more? Price of around 13.500 / 16.000 euros.

They are great cars with amazing fuel consumption numbers, but honestly I would not recommend getting ANY BMW with such high odometer readings. All of them will start giving you problems after 100k miles. I would go for 40-60mi but no more 👍

The E70 is only 190cm wide even with 7 seats so you can park it anywhere, not 221cm like GU5 5 seater. Steering and balance are traditional BMW good feedback and 50/50. Diesel has a long tank range and strong torque especially with emmision filter delete and a remap. Mine has 340,000 on it in the last 12 years. I tried the later F15 and current GU5, no comparison, traditional bmw feel & qualities removed, to feel like a Japanese car, but without their reliability.
