It's like you need to properly maintain something designed for performance in order for it to function. Who woulda guessed???
I own an e60 528i (N52 engine), it is my first car. The main difference between BMWs and Honda Accords, is maintenance. If you want a car you can drive and drive and drive with little to no attention being paid to the car, then get a car that isn't performance based. I constantly listen to my car and do a shit ton of preventative maintenance, "why?" you may ask, because I would rather spend smaller amounts of money over time keeping her maintained. So that I don't have $600 and $700 repairs to deal with. Also the only reason the M5 has a reputation of being "unreliable" is the push rod bearings, needing to be replaced. It's the reason why people ditched the M5s cus they didn't feel like maintaining a car after 100k miles is to much like hard work. There are reasons why you can see BMWs from the 70s still running, WE (the BMW community) take care of our cars.

It depends on what you're looking for.
Normally they produce quiet, comfortable and reliable cars. But they also have very good engines:

I know that your 2004 X3 certainly is not rocking original vanos seals... Or window regulators...
Did you do the vanos seals yourself? Did you have it done at the BMW dealership one or more times? You get MUCH better life from any aftermarket o-rings/seals, but the kit from Beisan Systems has been the standard since 2007 when Rajaie Qubain identified weakness in the OEM part and pounced on that market opportunity.

Only real failure for me was the water pump after 100k miles- which I know many say is unusual as it usually fails at 40-70k max for many people but I guess I lucked out. If I could have just snapped my fingers and completely 'renewed' the 330i and give it all the digital conveniences that come with my 2018 440i then I would have. Having had BMWs with the M54 and the M20, I agree that they were really reliable. With the M20 remember to change the timing belt every four years regardless of mileage due to the engine being an interference design. If the timing belt breaks, valves meet pistons with disastrous and expensive results . On the M54, be prepared to change out overflow tanks and radiators on a fairly regular basis. Also, when you need a new water pump, buy an EMP Stewart. All metal machined impeller and a lifetime warranty.
Finally, I’d like to mention the M30 (NA 3.5L I-6) since we’re talking about reliable engines. I had an E34 535i that was totaled by a relative who shall remain nameless. The unibody was bent, but the engine was fine, and it was sold to a guy who needed it for his club racer. He had been club racing his car for years with a bone stock M30. It finally blew during a race, so he was happy to get his hands on my old engine, which was 17 years old but only had ~120k on it. The remarkable part? His car had 299k on his original engine when it finally took a dump on the racetrack after years of racing with only routine maintenance. Not super powerful or particularly good on gas, but tough as nails. I still miss that car.

I have the M52TU B25 Engine in my e46 323ci Coupe. It runs so smooth and powerful as it did 22 years ago when the car left the factory in 1999. Still the first pistons, valves, vanos, timing chain and so on. No oil burn like some M54 engines unfortunately do. I have absolute clean exhaust tips 😉 I would recommend the 2.8 M52TU as well if you want to have more power 193 hp. My "new" car i am looking for as a daily driver is a e90 330i sedan with a 6 speed manual and the N52 Engine with 258 hp. The prices for a good one here in Germany are about 7 to 8000 Dollars.

I’ve got an ‘06 e90 sedan, 325xi. There’s always gonna be repair costs (gaskets, water pump, thermostat, shocks, etc) but I found myself pretty lucky not goin through wallet busting repairs (HPFP, engine failure etc) commonly found in the V8’s. Bought my e90 at 73K back in 2012. I’m now at 226K and strong. I even went a bit long between oil changes early on. Anything e90 with an N52, u’ll be fine.
My formula for longevity is stick with the straight-6/inline-6 (i6) based or NA engines. That now includes the twin scroll engines (b58: 640i, 840i, 540i, M340i) but u should be fine by the recommendations of this video.

BMW use transmissions made by ZF. I was shocked to read that Dodge has the same transmission as my BMW 🤔

François Parent haha, hellcat uses ZF 8, Only mainstream autos right now that can handle that much power. I love 8 ZF gearbox on my e70 X5.

@@Areku06 yeah ZF 8 does on rather good job too. With 106k miles it's due for a fluid change, new filter, new gasket and pan.

I did enjoy the list because I've got an N52. I just wish it was a 3 litre instead of a 2.5.

How does S55 reliability compare to the b58? After the crank hub upgrade?
