  • The Toyota Corolla is a wonderfully simple car that is refined transportation. The new Corolla Hatchback is for people who don’t want a crossover but do want something that is affordable, practical, with great styling. The Toyota Corolla is one of the best selling cars on the planet and was recently redesigned marking the twelfth generation. Prices range from $19,990 for the SE manual to $24,090 for the XSE with a CVT. Under the hood sits a brand new 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque. On the inside Toyota has done a creating job at creating a space that looks very nice for being such an affordable vehicle. The 2019 Toyota Corolla competes with the Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra GT, Chevy Cruze, and the FIAT 500.

    I have this car. This is my 10th vehicle, after considering many cars below $45k including Audis, Lexus, other fancy SUVs and Trucks, and sport cars. Which I've owned before (ES 350, Audi A6, Tacoma 3rd gen TRD, 4Runner 5th gen Limited 4WD, F-150 V8, etc). I disagree with this review that the sport mode doesn't do anything, it absolute does increase throttle response and holds higher RPMs for longer. Also, I'm getting amazing MPG about 35mpg average, and 45mpg+ on highway. The cabin is much quieter than my wifes Wrangler which isnt saving much, but still very comfortable and quiet. The car looks outstanding, and this reviewers favorite item (exhaust tips) are my least favorite. I could have bought a new Golf, or Civic, or had a nicely used A5 Sportback, or a Camry XSE with panoramic sunroof. However, the VW Golf will never last as long, the Civic has the terrible 1.5L with oil dilution and head gasket issues, the A5 Sportback will be good for a while but won't make it into high miles without issues (my A6 at 80k needed a new CVT and head gasket...), and the Camry is just not sporty enough or fun to drive although better for a family with kids. I considered new Trucks and SUVs including Escalade, 4Runner Limited 2022, and even the Ram 1500 full loaded 4x4, but they all have one big downfall...they're all gas hogs and in 2022 that's just unnecessary and ancient tech. The Corolla hatchback will probably be around longer than me, has incredible MPG at near hybrid levels, and is somewhat fun to drive. Why waste money on other cars? I have heated seats, apple carplay, remote start, digital dash, homelink rear view mirror, smart key with push to start, lane keep assist and radar cruise control, as well as a refined suspension system (look up Savagegeese video on this car). Highly recommended!

    I like that you didn't treat it like some world beater like every other reviewer seems to; "Bah! this thing is so slow! Shaq wouldn't even fit in here!"
    You have the MPG rating wrong at the end, the video shows the XSE's rating, but the SE CVT is rated at 32/42

    I hope the presenter makes a review of the new BMW 3 series this winter. It was also because of his review on some other channel at the time that I bought one. I also think it was one of the best reviews I have ever seen on youtube and I am subscribed to a lot of car reviewing channels. Good job.

    "not a Golf" good this will outlast a Golf by a longshot, that's one reason Toyota avoids the turbo which reduces reliability in the long term.

    • @raulferro3998
      @raulferro3998 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are totally right. But let's face it, forced induction can make this already great looking car into a great performing car that matches its cool looks. Toyota could just offer a TRD version turbocharged for whoever is willing to spend the extra cash for extra fun.

    Try to minimize personal conflicts when reviewing cars. Aim to be more objective and think about what people like me who are in market for a new compact car would want to know. Let us decide on the looks other small bits. This review is a true disappointment, the car on the other hand, is amazing!

    The seats in the hatch are much nicer than the Corolla sedan. The steering is well weighted too, unlike the sedan. Not a fan of the giant tablet stuck on the dash though. I hope it rides well, a little sporty, but not too harsh.

    Please help me understand, how does the "manual mode" in the CVT automatic work? In a traditional automatic, I understand it but in a CVT it makes no sense.

    • @pureabsolute4618
      @pureabsolute4618 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While a CVT can have a million ratios which it uses to choose the optimal RPM for cruising or acceleration, you can also simply just choose (in this case 10) specific ratios to travel through as you accelerate. Yes, during acceleration you lose some of the benefits of the CVT, but the CVT is *more* flexible than an automatic; not less. The CVT with discreet shift points could be (depending on programming) still better than an automatic, since the actual ratios chosen for the appearance of shifting can differ based on how hard you mash the gas pedal (lower ratio closer shift points for a hard press, and the opposite if you press it gently).

    I had the last model Corolla hatch, and now have this one. Both had/have CVT auto box. They have removed the "ash tray" / coin box on the drivers side on the dash. They have removed the sun glasses compartment above your head, next to the interior lights. They have removed the extra top centre console small compartment for the mobile phone. They have removed the extra cigarette lighter outlet to the rear seats. (I used it for the dash cam power). The rear door latch is no longer half way up the door, but at the bottom - must now bend down to unlatch it. Auto CVT gearbox is not as smooth as the last one. Lots of gimmicky things like side-radar that is sooo off-putting to use. It slightly fights you as you steer. Enough buttons and menus to sink a battleship, but no maps. Doesn't feel more powerful at all, in spite of 200cc extra engine capacity. While it is a nice car, I am not convinced that it is as good as hyped. ...little things.

    • @lazerbubbles3630
      @lazerbubbles3630 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your feedback!!!!! What year was your last model you had? ❤

    • @ralph5476
      @ralph5476 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lazerbubbles3630: Current one purchased in 07/2018. Not sure of the actual year of the last Corolla, but it was the model immediately before it. We gave the last one to our son, me thinking that the hype of this model meant it would be something extraordinary. In my opinion, it wasn't (and isn't). While it is a good car v- most Toyotas are OK - it is most definitely NOT up to the hype. I would probably now add that all the plastic on the front is FAR too much. It comes loose on the slightest scrape over a driveway, and has to be re-clipped in.

    • @pureabsolute4618
      @pureabsolute4618 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really enjoyed the review, but you should have mentioned your real-world MPG figures. I agree the front end is ugly, but for those who want Toyota reliability they may find a way to live with it. The Civic hatchback looks like an alien lawnmower to me. I liked the Corolla interior a lot. It looks rugged inside and well thought out. The big screen is nice. Does it pick up HBO?

I wanted the same corolla to replace my 16 year old boring corolla that no thieves want to touch and insurance companies give insurance for free, not a sports car attracting attentions. Wish they had back end come out a few more inches to line up with the bumper. It would gain more utility in back end too. And get rid of the the ugly giant weird shaped grill. And get a turbo in there! You know, better torque and gas mileage. Especially for us in higher elevations. There's a reason why everyone compares to golf/gti. Yet no other car company gets it.
