  • This is the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback. It replaces the outgoing Corolla iM, and Toyota says it's a fun daily driver. Does this Corolla XSE, with it's 6-speed manual transmission and 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine have the right stuff to dethrone the Honda Civic Sport hatchback or the Mazda3? Let's find out.

    It's no AE86, but it's a step in the right direction. Even the '90s fwd Corollas were fairly fun and responsive.
    And 6800 RPM is a fantastic redline for such a long stroke engine. Sounds good, too. Good to see a Corolla that's fun to drive again!

      Toyota is at least somewhat trying to make their cars fun again, and mad respect for making it a 6 speed available option.
      Yes its no 86, but its better than the corollas from 2006-2012

    Toyota should definitely look in to bringing back the Corolla XRS. Perhaps with the Camry's 2.5L? That would make a very nice Civic Si, Elantra Sport, etc competitor. And also give it REAL exhaust tips.

    I'm picking mine up soon, and I have to say I love the clutch. I drove the 2018 iM and the clutch had almost no feel, and the bite point is almost all the way out. The 2019 Corolla Hatch bites a lot sooner. Coming from my 2002 WRX with a 6 puck clutch to the iM was almost impossible. It felt awful. Switching to the 2019 Hatch, it was almost seamless. I couldn't be happier with the Hacthback. I absolutely love this car, even at the base S trim. Can't wait to pick it up.

    This past January I bought a rare XSE Corolla. Had two before this 2018 XSE. I love this new hatch XSE! As far as those couple of pre-production issues, Toyota will already have those all worked out by the time these hit the US lots for sale. BTW, anyone jamming a seat belt buckle into any material other than the seat belt housing, the material will of course look ruined. If those journalists owned the vehicles they drove and wrote about, they'd take better care of it and there wouldn't be marks, scrapes on plastic etc.

    It looks like a 2.0 Version of the Matrix Hatchback, but with better styling and engine. Smaller than before but still looks neat since it was from the Corolla family. Matrix is still better but that's my opinion. Nice Review

  • @MegaHollywood1971
    @MegaHollywood1971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Replace the air filter with a “free flow” type (i.e. K&N) and you will increase the throttle response. Also, the reason your RPMs linger is more than likely due to having a dual mass flywheel; not a “sport” enthusiasts choice.
    Review Sport, Economy, and Luxury cars separately. Very few do ALL things well at the price paid for the Corolla.
    The biggest plus for the new Corolla is that it has Multi-Port Injection and will provide a long and clean motor life.

  • @rightlanehog3151

    Jake , This was a very comprehensive and thorough exploration of the driving characteristics of this new Corolla hatch. TMC should definitely receive credit for putting so much effort into the manual version which seems to strike an excellent balance of engagement, performance and economy. If it achieves Toyota's normal levels of long-term reliability it will be a real winner as a daily driver. My hope is that TMC will offer us the wagon version they sell in Europe with this new generation to provide an extra measure of versatility. For the record, the Corolla iM, as opposed to the sedan, has double wishbone rear suspension.

    • @DriveBreakFixRepeat
      @DriveBreakFixRepeat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Appreciate the kind words. While I'm a big hatchback guy, a wagon would be neat for a daily driver. Thanks for the tip on the suspension, I wasn't aware.

      JS, You are welcome. The 2019 gets a substantial boost in power and slightly more aggressive gearing than the iM but all in all the iM was a very nice package for the price. There should be some sweet deals on 'old' iMs now that the 19 has arrived.

    Glad Toyota stopped hiding the Corolla hatchback under other names. Btw, a 2nd gear that goes to 62 mph (100 km) allows a better 0-60, one shift, which sells more cars.

    According to Car & Driver, this new hatch gets 5 mpg less than the Camry 4 cylinder . They tested an automatic SE with 16" wheels and only achieved 40 mpg on the highway where the Camry had made 45. This proves our theory that Toyota should have put the 2.5 in this hatch for more power and better mpg ;)

    • @mark52111
      @mark52111 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MM, Car & Driver does the same highway run at the same speed for all cars. The Camry and Corolla hatch were both tested in summertime and the difference is 12.5% in favor of the Camry. That percentage is far from trivial. TMC used to offer the Camry's 2.4 engine as an option in the Corolla/Matrix/Vibe and the evidence suggests they should do so again.

      Jason Griffith so you can’t fold down the seats in a Civic? I could’ve sworn I did that with my 2017 Civic coupe. iMT doesn't seem to help the stalling. By the end of the week, I was 95% there with it, but, as someone who has been driving manuals (quite well) for over a decade, it should just be get in and go, like every other car I drive. The real exhaust tip (single one) is hidden under the right side of the bumper. This is not the only new car to do this, as the 2019 jetta does the same exact thing. If you had the car and really hated them, you could probably just remove them or repaint them the body color.

    The iM it replaces had a double wish bone rear suspension, you are thinking about the corolla sedan which had a torsion beam.
    How did you not notice the rev hang? it hangs for eons. Toyota needs to go gazoo on this thing; turbo & GKN RDU please. Also, please sort out the EPS feel, clutch uptake, throttle mapping, revert to a cable operated handbrake, and make sure the driver can kill all nannies, like actually kill them, not VW "turn them off" when they are still on. Also fix the interior colors; solid black is fine thanks.

      Try a 10th gen Civic or really any new Subaru product, the rev hang will make you want to self harm in comparison. Agree with most of your thoughts beyond that.

    If Toyota made this look aggressive they should of at least tuned it up to back up those looks, they should of slapped in a turbo and done so much more than just making it “look” fast, I bet you they would of made great sales. I would be more than happy to buy something around 30k or more especially if it was a Toyota, I wish they started making legends again like they did in the 90s

    Good review mate , and I'm with you on the pros of knobs and buttons instead of mostly touch screen function .
    One of my cars is a 17 year old family hack with knobs and buttons that I can reach for even in the dark without even taking eyes off the road and get the job done instantly , .
    A lot of new cars have all the wizz bang touch screeny stuff , which I might add if your in a country that has a lot of sun gets reflections on the screens at times ,
    which really pisses me off and is annoying.
    In my neck of the woods the Corolla hasn't lobbed yet but should be soon .
    I think I will be looking at one of these little Corollas .
    Cheers.

      Travis but the civic mpg won’t last forever, it will go down faster than the corolla if you have turbo, Toyota finance is so much easier then Honda. you can’t check the transmission, the engine when you buy a brand new car, until few years later when reports come in, everything has its price, Toyota don’t just make their car expansive for nothing

I get it's "reliable" but you can get a WRX with less than that if you don't give a shit about "upgraded infotainment", and that car is just as reliable, it's faster, and has AWD. And honestly that's not really the only competitor in this cars class. For 27k they could offer something besides "well it looks cooler and has 20 more horsepower!"

Not to mention full LED headlights. Toyota should’ve put more power into the engine. No way $25k or a car with less than 170hp is competitive this day and age.
