    Great watch no doubt... but does it get over-hyped? Is it a submariner substitute? Is it the best diver to by at around $4,000? Do you have the frame to comfortably enjoy the watch? What is the future of the BB? I share my thoughts here. I'd love to hear yours!
    *I filmed this a couple weeks before Watches & Wonders. There is now a GMT iteration in this case diameter called the Black Bay Pro.*

    The BB58 is for those who love the look and feel of the 5513 Submariner or vintage Tudor Submariner. I love vintage dive watches, but want a modern watch I can wear everyday and in every situation. The BB58 seems to fit that criteria.

    I’m a pretty big guy; 6’3, 260, 7 3/4” wrists. I find my bb 58 plenty satisfying. My other daily wear is a 42mm Speedy but the 3mm size difference is really noticeable. The proportions of this watch are perfect. Btw, I have the og with the guilt dial.

    The 58 is hyped because there aren’t many luxury divers under 40mm. If your wrist is bigger, you have a TON of options at any price point. But if you have a wrist under 7 inches and want a really nice luxury diver, the 58 is really it. For under $4k for Rolex level quality, really great in house movement and wears much better than any modern Sub, the 58 really is the perfect choice. The 58 is not over hyped, it’s hyped to the perfect amount because of the fact there aren’t any other real options and the watch is under priced.

      Certina DS Action Diver 38mm is a great option, if the budget doesn't allow the BB. Not comparing them of course, but the Certina is pretty awesome and well under 1k. ISO rated to 300m,80h of Power Reserve, sapphire with AR coating, diver's extension, etc...from a brand with 100+ years of history and within the Swatch Group.
      I love the BB58 and I totally get the appeal. It's a watch I definitely want to get in the near future. BUT the truth is that at over 3k one should expect a ceramic bezel and on the fly adjustments on the clasp. At least I do - even if it is a vintage inspired piece and a rare sub 40mm watch.

    A stellar watch and I 'm fortunate to own both the steel Black/Gilt and the Navy blue versions on the bracelet. They share wrist time with my immaculate Rolex Sub Date 16610 which I've cherished for 20 years now. The BB58s more closely resemble the elegance of this era of Submariners rather than the latest and larger ceramic Subs. Probably why I love them so much - but with the added benefit of a modern in-house COSC movement and 70-hr power reserve.

    As I mentioned to you on Thursday, I've become a real Tudor fanboy. My BB925, is beautiful in its simplicity, as is the reference you reviewed here. The whole BB line gives everyone a choice, and at prices easier to swallow than some others. Of course, it's all relative - several thousand dollars is still VERY expensive!

    Big fan of my Gilt dial BlackBay 58. 70 hours of power reserve almost give it a quartz like « grab and go » capability when all watches in the box have died the previous day.
    Only real improvement much needed on this version, is a feature you find now in sub $1k micro brands, is obviously the on-the-fly bracelet adjustment and it would be 95% perfect.
    And I understand Tudor cannot step on its big brother’s toes, but a rose gold BlackBay 58 on solid rose gold bracelet would be a fantastic watch for the successful entrepreneur wanting something safe and different at the same time.

    Seems like I'm in the minority here but I actually like the rivets. I mean, the idea of them is silly -- faking a manufacturing process for aesthetics, especially on a tool watch -- but I think the rivets look good and give the Tudors a distinctive style. I really wish we could have a quick adjust system though. I had to take my GMT off today because it got too tight and I'm on the the last micro-adjust hole.

      The rivets are embarrassing Tudor should make a real riveted bracelet if they love that look so much. Who wants something to look like something that it isn't and yes it isn't something your notice but just knowing they are fake would drive me nuts. It reminds me of something that would be on a cheap fashion watch or toy. A real deal diver should not have a useless decoration

    I wanted a sub (no date) but got fed up of the game playing/waiting needed to get one. The sub would have likely been a “one and done” as I doubt they’d be many occasions I’d have taken it off, but I chose a med. JLC Reverso duoface instead which I absolutely love. The Reverso is great but leaves a space for a daily/beater type dive watch and I think the smaller size makes the bb58 the prime candidate for me - as it won’t make the Reverso feel tiny when I go back to it (which happened when I tried the mm300). It’s a watch that will only look better the more you wear it, some watches you wince every time you notice a scratch/ding but I think the bb58 will look great and will age well.

  • @A_Dude_And_His_Watch78
    @A_Dude_And_His_Watch78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Diminutive because it's 1mm smaller than your hulk? LOL okay. I'm a big guy and love the 58 but I guess I also don't want a dinner plate on my wrist. And give me a break already with the rivets. One, they don't look that bad. Two, you don't even notice them. The only substitute for a submariner is a Pagani Design or some other homage watch. Tudor's black bay is it's own thing. At the end of the day, most dive watches will look similar anyway due to the functionality of the design.

      Apart from the aesthetics of the rivets, I think it’s an over the top faux vintage attempt. It’s just a bit unnecessary, to me. But hey, I don’t like it, so I won’t buy it, doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy it! God bless ya.

    I think you are making sense in regarding the size of the BB58, I got the BB 41mm and I feel it is the right size for me, I don’t think the 39mm would feel good on me. I know the BB58 it s very popular but as you said I don’t like to get things where all the people is looking at, some people like to turn to the places where not everyone is going so crazy before then it becomes boring.

  • @DarrenPhung9816
    @DarrenPhung9816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve personally had both the original black/gilt and the blue dial BB58s and while I did love both watches, I got the white dial/black bezel Omega Seamaster Professional and it’s just a better watch for the money in my opinion.
    I loved the BB58s don’t get me wrong. I have a skinner wrist so the 39mm case was perfect for me, but both BBs I had the chapter rings were misaligned. I took it back to the AD for them to send to Tudor on the blue bezel and it was 8 weeks and they still hadn’t even looked at it yet so I just had my AD ask for it back and I just dealt with it.
    My SMP has been absolutely perfect for me. It doesn’t wear too big and having the date and the on the fly micro adjustment were the most important features for me. I use a date complication too much to not have that and my wrist size fluctuates a lot during the day living here in Oklahoma so having the on the fly adjustment was a HUGE benefit.

  • @charleskrishnamoorthy6109
    @charleskrishnamoorthy6109 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the BB58's as a bracelet wear. What I like most is the dimensions and thickness. I have 19 cm wrists but I like a sleek tapered piece on a bracelet, one of the main reasons I don't like the SMP300 on a bracelet but love it on the rubber strap. The first 2 Black Bays never did it for me, something was "missing" or just a lil bit too plain. The Bronze though fixes a lot of this and this is the one i'm going for short of Tudor being able to make a 58 GMT with a 12mm thickness.

    I agree with a lot of what you said. I have a BB58 in blue and its quite nice! It’s definitely not a sub replacement. But its nice in and of itself. I’m really not a fan of the bracelet (not cus of the rivets), but just because it does not fit my 16.5cm wrist well. I cant seem to get the adjustment right. Barring that, its great. It wears well, feels good on the wrist, is not at all in your face and I like it. I actually like the BB Pro as well (the thickness isnt actually that bad irl). But i dont think im going to get another Tudor anytime soon. So many more brands to wear and explore!

    Tudor have really hit the nail on the head with the BB58 in just about every aspect. Amongst a number of other divers, I own a Seamaster 300M and a Submariner.....but I would most certainly enjoy and wear one of these. There really isn't anything I don't like about it. If I had this amount of money to spend on one diver, I'd have to say that this would likely be it. For a tad more however there is the Seiko MarineMaster 300 which, if you've not held one in the flesh, is pretty bad-ass, not mention an unusual/interesting choice. A tad heavy that said.

But all things being equal, I'd get the BB58 because I don't want an investment, I want a cool, old-school looking, modern wearing, dive watch. I love that there's no gold and no fauxtina. It also, like the BB, can be classed as a EDC workhorse, being noted for it's anti-magnetism and shockproof. If you watch the second hand track around the dial, you'll note how smooth it sweeps. All this costs around $1,000

    I’m not sure it’s sensible to compare them to subs, they are different watches appealing to different people. I’ve always liked the look of the black bay 58 but it’s never hit the sweet spot for me. They are all beautiful but the black/gilt dial is too showy, the blue is blue, the 925 has a great dial but I don’t want a watch that tarnishes, I love the 3,6,9 dial on the bronze but it’s made out off bronze. To be honest I’m not sure I could buy one as I like a daily watch to have a date.
    Finally with the pro they hit on something I really like, so much so that I’m currently wearing mine. I don’t care that it’s a gmt, I love the dial and it’s got that all important date and I love the fact that it does not look like it’s trying to hard. It’s actually 1954 Tudor Submarine the 1st one and not 1958. The 1954 Tudor Submariner had Rolex Crown, Case back stamped Rolex, Rolex Hour, Minute and Second Hands. Though it was not a Chronometer. It had the Tudor Rose Logo on the Dial and it was 100mm. The New Tudor BB58 with Black Dial & Gold Indices, Gold Hour, Minute and Second Hands, it actually looks like the 1954 Rolex/Tudor Submariner.. Look it up… But the 2018-2023 BB58 is built with modern materials and is more accurate than the old Rolex/Tudor Submariner and it’s CHRONOMETER CERTIFIED with a in-house movement compared to the old Rolex/Tudor Submariner that used a secondary movement. It was actually called Tudor Oyster Prince 7924. I like how Tudor separated itself from Rolex and did its own thing, I think that Tudor is well on it’s way than it’s Big Brother and have reached out to different audiences $$$. The New Rolex Subs have gotten a little bigger in size compared to the old Nostalgic Subs at 37mm. That’s why I think Tudor hit it right in the spot with the BB58 from 41mm, 39mm and now the BB54 right at 37mm. With its small size and using their in-house movement and 70 hour reserve, I think it’s amazing !! I think I prefer this STEAK (Tudor) because it’s Better than a PIZZA.. It’s not a Rolex and I wouldn’t want it to be.

    Really a great watch for the money . I will say that I'm more partial to my 79220N smiley face on bracelet. thinner than either the BB Heritage or the BB 58 . And a nicer , cleaner bracket without the rivets . I do have a BB GMT on bracelet so have the rivet braclet as well and in truth , I don't care about the rivets being there . The BB 58 is a nice peice to be sure b I t I like the Heritage better , as it looks better on my 7 3/4" wrist .

    I am in 100% agreement with those that say the BB58 is nearly identical to the pre-bling or pre-2008 Subs. Slightly different bezel teeth and that is about it. Actually, the BB has better Lume and clasp than those.
    I bought a new 2006 Sea-Dweller and wore it for 6 years near daily. So I do have some experience in the Sub line-up of that era. The BB 58 is the no date Sub of pre-2008.
    I just bought a blue 58. I almost chose something else because it was too identical to earlier Subs. I was down to a Grand Seiko GMT and a blue Aqua Terra. The 58 is just more me.
    It is not a current sub, but is nearly identical in all aspects to a pre-2008. It is also running somewhere between perfect to an imperceptible 1/4 second per day. Apples and oranges to the Sub it is not.
    I have just hit my 50’s and was fortunate to get my first new Rolex sports line watch when I was 17- I am a long time watch nerd and the BB 58 is a pre-bling Sub.

    Black reflects the warmth and 1950's vibe better which was the original intention of this series. Submariner is over hyped. BB58 is value for money and will become even popular after 20 years because this watch is classic, has the right proportions with a solid movement.

    As I don't like the Submariner, I don't see any watch as being a "substitute". I think that is generally a bad way to look at watches, not just because Rolex does not need or deserve to be on a pedestal, but because one can never truly escape desire for what they really want. If for whatever reason, you've always wanted a sub, any related watch is only temporary relief to that itch.
    With regards to the BB, I like it. But I won't buy one. It's like a....almost perfect car. It looks good, drives well, etc. But, it's a bit boring. I prefer the more unique elements of the Seamaster or Superocean. That being said, I love the 925.

    The OG Gilt is a strap monster, as well as the 925.
    That Bond strap looks like ass on the Blue58. The Blue is too limiting imo. I'm only into strap monsters. And even though I wear a lot of blue, it doesn't pair with everything. They do have a warmth in low light, but in bright light, it's just blue and white. The white is almost too white.
    Has nothing to do with '1958', They should have called it a BB73 or whatever year that came out, and given it the square plops like the Pelagos.
    I don't care how many variations of the 58 they release. There is only one that has any real association to the year and its namesake.
    Blue58 are already flooding the markets as they don't have that timeless staying power and people are getting quickly bored with them. The OG Gilt58 will never age as it's already effectively 60 years old and has an established timeless desirable warmth.

    Tudor is a pure tool watch. I like it a lot more Panerai watches. Panerai is so ugly to me. I know Tudor is owned by Rolex, but I like Tudor a lot more than Rolex. I don’t like Rolex sale tactics. I will not own or want to own a Rolex. It is overpriced and overhyped. The quality at par of watches half or even a quarter of its price.

    You're very right about this piece Bruce. I found it very very dull and boring to be honest. I can only really afford one luxury watch, so I'm saving for a Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm.. much more beautiful in my opinion. I tried on the Tudor.... it's too flat if that makes sense
    Edit - it needs a micro adjust system too.. and the hands - not a fan of the snowflake.... for a diver, I'd rather have an Omega Seamaster 300 (if it was slim), or that Rolex I'm looking for
