The Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight felt overrated, over-hyped, which is why I didn't buy it initially. It seemed like too much of an obvious watch to buy. But here is why I love and hate the Tudor Black Bay 58. I will be selling my Rolex Submariner because this is possibly the best dive watch.
I thought I'd wait a few months before doing this video as I didn't just want to do another unboxing video or first impressions. I wanted to live with the watch first. Get through the honeymoon period.

Hey Ben King...any concerns with the anodized bezel? Does it scratch easily and any knowledge of it fading in direct sunlight over time? Do you know by any chance if Tudor can change out the bezel for a new one and what the cost would be?

    • @paul--b
      @paul--b 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The bezel insert doesn’t scratch easily as the edge of the bezel and the Crystal are raised so most objects you hit will bridge between those points rather than touch the recessed bezel insert.
It is unlikely to fade any time soon unless you leave the watch out somewhere that often gets direct sun. They can be replaced for a few hundred dollars.

I don’t get how you can “hate” the hands of your watch and own it. The main function of it is to tell the time (obvious I know), so every time you wanna tell the time you have to look at something you hate? Not for me, I couldn’t do that. I quite like the Snowflake hands.
I’m really interested to hear about your no date sub. When you bought it and shared the vid I think I remember commenting that it was too similar to your Kermit and it was competing with both that and your Explorer for wrist time in a similar space. It seemed a weird choice. However that’s the thing with watch collecting over time we all buy a watch and then change our minds, I’ve sold a few that I’ve picked up within a year or so. Sometimes when you own it and have it for a while you realise it doesn’t get the wrist time it should and so it’s time to move it on.
I still feel like this Tudor is very much competing with your Explorer as a daily/monotone/versatile watch. That doesn’t make me right though, we all like different things. One versatile monotone watch is more than enough for me. If you have a watch collection, you need versatility less, you can have a few different watch styles and splashes of colour wherever you like. One sensible watch that can be worn anywhere and dressed down is enough IMO. A collection of monotone watches leads to dull choices in the morning when choosing what to put on (to me).

@@alevansebel I can’t help laughing when people keep a straight face talking about luxury watches as tools. I’ve never seen a builder use a £2.5k shovel. Of course expensive machinery can be involved but only where expensive machinery is needed. They me be homages to tools of the past but they are luxury items that aren’t the best tool for the job at all.
Justifying a purchase because your luxury watch is a “tool” genuinely perplexes me. What bullshiter came up with this in the modern era? People who want tools should have a G-Shock. Anything much beyond that then accept you’re buying a luxury watch and stop kidding yourself and just enjoy it!

I've had my BB58 for over a year now and I love it. I have smaller wrists so the 39mm case is perfect for me. I too don't like the snowflake hand. I got it because of the styling and the trigger was the in house movement. Incredible movement. Great vid as always.

I love the BB58, I love how easy it is to tell the time, because of the snowflake hand is so drastically different than the minute hand. The colors are perfectly new, yet antique feeling. Red triangle adds a little panache. The only critique I have is there is no (on the fly) micro adjustments. I plan on getting it, hopefully in the next 12 months.

I don't mind the look of the snowflake hand, I'm bothered by the execution. When I pay $3k+ for a watch I want hands that have some depth. A slight curvature, some facets, or any other thing that gives them a bit of dimensionality and a higher end look than a $300 watch.

I bought this watch a couple of years ago I wanted a watch that I could wear everyday even at work “Im a carpenter”
I also have a rolex datejust but I only wear it when going out for dinner or wedding’s “special occasions” I really believe that Tudor brand needs to step back from the David Beckham's and Lady Gagas and focus on being the working man’s Rolex again!
That’s why I bought a Tudor and I thought and still do believe that the BB58 is their current and best watch.
Especially if you like the smaller watch designs like myself the 58 reminds me of the the Rolex submariner that Steve McQueens wore with his blue t-shirt holding a coffee such a casual look but that man has class!
I did sell my Tudor BB58 for a pelagos and regretted it straight away luckily the person I sold it to was a friend and I managed to buy it back after a month never selling it again! It’s got scratches and scuffs on it now and I love it! just looks fantastic! Real working man’s watch!

I truly adore my black BB58. The gilt, the way the sapphire distorts the view of the dial slightly around the edge, the clasp, the vintage lume and the exposed crown. The rivets don’t bother me at all, but Adrian is dead right, when it’s on your wrist, you don’t see them at all.
It’s an amazing piece for the price point. Don’t be put off by the talk of wait lists. I went into an AD who I haven’t purchased with (although I have bought from their group) on the Wednesday afternoon. Its got alot that people have been clamoring for (smaller size, no date, etc), with enough unique design elements the snobs will turn noses up at (gilt dial, snowflake, rivots) that keep it interesting and worth talking about. Bought mine in Dec 2018 and have only gone to love it and reach for it more and more as the time has passed... if anything the rest of my collection struggles to compete. I find it a lot more versatile on the black leather strap I picked up on Hodinkee, but like many commenters there's not much else I would change - love the warmth of the fuaxtina and the rose gold touches, and I haven't found a more size-appropriate sports watch for my everyday life.

The whole point of this watch is making a diver that is as close to the original Snowflake Subs from the 1970s-1990s. It is the same size, has the Snowflake hands and attitude. The biggest thing is the change in size, both height and making it 39mm. The biggest deal is the size. The faux patina is not for me, I'll stick with the two Tudor Subs I have, a better bang for buck.

I bought one of these this year (on a strap, not a bracelet) and I love it. It's incredibly comfortable for a diver, the power reserve is everything it promises and the at-a-glance legibility is great. It has become a go-to ahead of my Speedmaster FOIS (which has a rather uncomfortable embossed design that digs into the wrist over a day's wear and a rather over-pronounced case front). 39mm is perfect if you have tiny bitch-wrists like me. If I was aiming for a one-watch collection at sub-£5k, even possibly sub-£10k, this would be a very serious contender.

I had to look at what I already owned to avoid redundancy. The black is a great watch! Classy, classic, versatile... Man, it's the perfect first watch (or first diver) for anyone starting a collection. But don't discard the blue just yet based on this. This watch is a total different piece, even if it is similar to the black. For example, if the black is "classic", this blue one is "modern".
