Can We Fix This Xbox 360 Controller That Won't Turn On?

Troubleshooting Steps
1) Put in fresh batteries
2) Try another battery back.
3) Clean off any corrosion that you see on the controller battery terminals.
4) Try polishing the terminals if they are really bad.
5) Open up the xbox 360 controller and look for other forms of corrosion, clean that with isopropyl alcohol.
Hopefully one of these 5 troubleshooting steps will help you repair your xbox 360 controller that wont power on.

Thank you, this video helped! It took a lot of time and effort, but got the proper connections working again. I kept cleaning then testing and wasn't getting it to still work. I went in with a flashlight to find every little bit of corrosion. Eventually I worked a Q-tip in tight spaces. And boom! Finally got it to stay on. Thank you, again. Very helpful video. Thanks for the great video. Took some tinkering (I even put the charger packs under a fan to air them out) but I managed to figure out that the charger packs were the problem, while also learning how to clean out the inside of these controllers for the future. Getting some rechargeable packs tomorrow so hopefully I won’t have this problem again. Thanks!

Thank you! I took my 360 out of the archive a week ago and was heart broken that 3/4 controllers wouldn't work no matter how I messed with the batteries and battery packs. I wasn't keen on buying new ones since I know they were very lightly used to begin with, so you saved me big time! I didn't really consider internal corrosion since I stored them without batteries. Omg thank you for this video! I had to pull my 360 out of storage until I get new wifi and I couldn’t figure out why the controller wasn’t working… turns out, I had some build up of corrosion inside the battery pack on one of the prongs… some water on a Q-tip, it came right off and my controller is working so I’m able to watch DVDs! I had this problem. I got one of my controllers working again but it won't use the normal battery packs. It shuts off immediately after flashing green for a second. The rechargeable works just fine. I'd like to be able to use both. Got any solutions? I cleaned the inside of the controller.

It did work I tried first with the known working batteries pack new batteries in it and it worked
So I knew the controller is on then looked into the old batteries back pack it was full of carbon
I put some CRC contact cleaner and cleaned and tried with the new batteries and guess what old back pack started working
TH-cam is really an institute to learn if we people use it in a right direction

I had same problem on 2 cheap 2nd hand controllers , cleaned both and checked all connections with magnifying glass but still no success making it work with battery. Ended up using usb cable on front connector both powered up fine - I just hook the controller to any usb power port or charger near my couch - you don't need to be hooked directly into the xbox usb port as the wireless handles the connection. This is the simplest solution if the battery repair/clean fails - still give it a clean so that the board does not degrade from corrosion but use the front port for power.

Been using PS4 controllers since launch but they suffer from thumbstick drift and broken button rubber so brought back my good old 360 and it works wonderfully with only a little thumbstick wear.

Not only I cleaned the contacts in the "box" but i also tilted them forward, so did the springs on the controller side, carefuly pull them out so they are some 2-3mm longer .. box is now held more tightly and so far .. no issues, if it acts up more, then i will dive under plastic.

Thanks for the video i followed the instruction and now when i touch X bottom the light lights up but when i release it the light goes out. If i press start button the circle light lights up less number 2 sector. It's always clean problem?

I was testing a game,my ps4 controller didn´t worked so i went to my xbox 360 one,turns out that it wasn´t working...WHAT!!!!??? batteries where not there so it was fin on that,after testing other batteries i remember that i had problems with batteries pack,so i just pressed and hold it to make batteries get contact and worked,in my case it was that.

Always try and use electrical contact cleaner before opening it up. That’s how I got mine to work

I couldnt make it work, first i thought it was gonna work because the damage was similar to yours but i couldnt find the origin of the short. The thing i noticed was that the 4 connectors in the middle where all shorted to ground. and a capacitor/resistor near it looked like it was burnt but i couldnt confirm it

sweet! works again... cleaned up the connectors in the battery pack housing after I was able to get the controller to turn on by putting the batteries in place without the actual housing and bridging the tops of them with two quarters... :)

I didn’t have a t8 security but had a regular t10, broke the tips off in the middle with a flathead and the t10 fit, tips for someone else that only has t10 lol
