    Enjoyed this video so much, watched a second time.. these blooms are absolutely stunning.. brilliant.. it’s too hot here for Masdevallias, but there is a micro miniature I’d love to have.. heat tolerant Masdevallia erinacea, should thrive in my little “orchidarium”.. love the gravel rock.. thanks for sharing, it’s very helpful! Kind regards, Bett

      Good morning Bett and thank you for your very kind words. When the sun shnes my greenhouse temperatures climb well above 30c and the massies don't seem to be bothered at all, but I suppose that if they had this hot temps over much longer periods they wouldn't like it very much unless the night temperatureshad a drop of 15c.......on the whole I find them more tolerant to heat than is recommended.......worth giving one a try!!.....Thanks again Bett and have a good day and lovely weekend,
      Ed.

    Thank you, Ed, for sharing your beautiful Masdevallia repotting with us in lava rocks. How often do you water them? It seemed like your plants responded well to this media. I may have to give it a try. Thank you, Ed. Catherine

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good morning Catherine and thank you for your comment. I wouldn't think twice about using lava rock for any plant, and the way my massies are responding to the stuff is fantastic. I have other plants potted the same way but they are very slow at respondingto their new media. This is mainly caused by the production of new roots being slow to adapt to the new media. I feed at no more than 200ppm once per week but flush with pure water three a week. This keeps the salts down and keeps the plants in a damp condition with no chance of over watering due to the draining of the lava. Hope all is well with you and take care,
      Ed.

      Hi Beverley.....thank you.....they didn't do very well untill I started using the lava rock and keeping them damp. I'm feeding them every week with no more than 200ppm but I'm also flushing with pure water 3 times per week before feeding again.....thanks again and take care,
      Ed.

      Hi again Nick. I get all my lava rock from a firm called Stones4Gardens in the UK.
      I order the size 10mm-20mm which I find as ideal. Initially I got some lava rock from the same company at a much lesser size but this now seems to be unavailable. Hope this helps Nick,
      Ed.

    Can we plant oncidiums in lava rock, with their hair like roots?

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ther's no reason why you can't plant oncidiums in lava rock although it may take them a while to adopt to their new media.....once settled they will grow very well.
      When changing medias for our orchids into a different media it is not uncommon for the roots to slowly die off whilst new roots are developing and becoming familiar with their new potting media. Lava rock can dry out very quickly but it is a great way to keep the plants damp because you cannot over water with this type of media. Give it a go and let me know how you get on......thanks Dorene and take care,
      Ed.
