I had a flower shop before. I like orchids a lot, especially cattleya orchids. Most cattleya orchids have leaves that are flat. I have seen only one orchid that has spiral leaves in all my visits to the wholesale market. The leaves of that orchid looked so elegant that it gave me the feeling of the leaves posting a dance move instead standing still. I bought the orchid and kept it in the shop as a "Not For Sale" item. One day. a sophisticated lady came to my shop and she got spellbound by that cattleya orchid with spiral leaves even thought it did not have flower on it. She begged me to sell the orchid to her. When I pointed out that a sign said it was not for sale, she still kept on staring at the orchid for a long time and begged me again and again to sell the orchid to her. I was impressed by her sophisticated taste for that particular orchid and her perseverance that I finally sold it to her at regular price instead of raising the price due to her begging for me to sell it to her. I did not want to part with that special orchid but I was happy to see that the lady was very happy to get the orchid that she loved. I am still looking for another cattleya orchid with the same spiral leaves but failed to find one so far. Has anybody else seen a cattleya orchid with spiral leaves?
I’m sooo guilty! I see the bulb shriveled, I’ll water more. Next thing you know, root rot. After killing many, I’ve finally learned that lava rocks works the best for my Cattaleyas. I’m watching from California! Loved your videos!!
I came across your video. I have indeed become addicted to orchids over the last four years. Major difference though. I am in the cold climes of Scotland. I am doing quite well, though I say it myself, as do many in Scotland. And yes, I agree, it is the most fulfilling of hobbies, full of wonder. Every aspect of orchid growth, not just the flowers, is a thrill and nourishes the soul.
Who knew Scotland had a secret orchid society thriving among the chilly winds? Maybe you should start a "Highland Orchid Championship”! Do you have a greenhouse?
Dave, I endorse your simple understandable advice from the videos you produce! Your advice is very solid. I have made all the mistakes! They say you aren't an expert grower until you have killed 1,000 orchids. I am close! I have moved about 300 orchids in/on trees in the last 3 years. The very first orchid I put in a tree was 6 years ago, it is now 9 ft across and blooms 9 months of the year. Once the plants are established in the trees, I find that I don't need to water as much and big plants are easier to take care of than small plants. All my potted plants are in inorganic media. I try to grow everything big and pot up rather than divide and disturb their roots. Your plants really look wonderful, you seem to have mastered your growing conditions. I am still mastering mine but making progress!
I agree with you Dave that growing Cattleyas are tricky and it's not easy. I agree that growing them in airconditioned homes does make it a real challenge. I use grow lights and humidifiers and still struggle to get them to bloom. But, I will keep on trying until one of these days I may actually get one to flower. Thanks for the tips, James
Love catts. And they do well for me, even the bi-foliate types, which I mount even in October and they survive. They have the most amazing flowers. Thanks for the tips.
.......you have a great collection of beautiful orchids......and they are large.....shows consistant good care and dedication......I really enjoy your videos......your Cattleya growing tips were excellent........Thanks for taking the time
HI Dave, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Avid cattleya grower myself in Los Angeles! They do fairly well here to mounted to palm trees. For me cattleya, and den's grow the best in my climate. I gave up on phals, too sensitive to rot. looking forward to more videos...funny how all the orchid growers here on youtube are all in florida..and they all have huge properties.lol
Thanks for your pearls of wisdom. I've killed a dozen phals with overwatering and am finally managing to keep several alive. I've been thinking of getting Catleeyas for their amazing fragrances but you've convinced me to stick to cooler tolerant Oncidiums and Cymbidiums instead.
Great video. I remember my uncle, who grew orchids professionally, told me to not baby them. It was hard. Especially with the Dend Nobile's and not water in winter. Great vid. Glad I found your channel.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m thrilled to hear you found the channel and that you’re learning more about caring for those beautiful orchids!
Thank you for the tips... I lost my cattleyas... it must be overwatering like you said _ I thought dehydration. You are right. Thanks so much. Learned from couple of your videos so far
Got my first ever cattleya just before Christmas at Lowes. Was only an inch or two tall, but it hasnot stopped growing ever since. Started with one new shoot. Then two at the same time, and now theres 3 coming out at the same time. I keep them in a bark and giant perlite mix but can only water them every 8-10 days.
That's fantastic! It sounds like your cattleya is thriving. It's amazing to see how much growth they can achieve with the right care. Keep up the great work!
on my cattleyas, i check their media if i water them today and on the 3rd day if it is dry i give it one more day before watering it again. This is during summer about 37C to 40C
Hi Dave😌🙌I got a bifoliate bowringiana. I could have screwed up if I had not known to repot according to the the new root growth needs to be fresh. Thanks😅🙌I have a huge cattleya that does get a lot of water and grows in pumice and bark but looks healthy and growing a huge new bulb and a Laeliocattleya that apparently doesn't mind water in Summer. It's daily 95℃ and super humid and hot as hell. Maybe I should consider teracotta for that huge cattleya next year? what do you think Dave?
It sounds like you’ve got a great handle on your plants! Repotting based on root growth is essential, and it’s wonderful to hear your Cattleya is thriving.
Super video. I can’t do mounts because I travel occasionally. I’m new so I’m scared of clay pots where I can’t see the roots and conditions of the media. I hope to be able to graduate to clay for the catts in a year or so. I am keeping them in stellite, charcoal, leca so hopefully that will help me not over water. How are you getting good nutrient absorption on the mounts?
What about up-potting? I bought a few in plastic nursery pots and inorganic media. Is it safe to pick them up and just sit back down in a clay pot and only add extra to snug it up?
Dave, it looks like you have some metal shelvings? I was thinking about getting some but I was afraid of them rusting. Are you having that problem. I would very much appreciate an answer. Thank you very much in advance😍
Okay I get that over-watering Catts are bad. I grow mine in lava rock / river rock in clay pots - now the problem I have with shriveled roots is that the tips of what I assume are aerial roots, are shriveling. I water once a week - and a slight mist everyday. The pseudobulbs seem to be getting pretty wrinkly too - so I doubt its because of overwatering. I live on the west coast in Canada. Any thoughts?
@@DavesOrchidOasis Thanks for the reply - I doubt its the humidity, unless you are saying its because of too much humidity. We're between 60 - 90% generally. And I have water trays.
Cattleya growers may be interested in a good source for virgin cork bark. I have purchased from Maryland Cork Company. They will send you a large box of cork slabs in various sizes. This is much cheaper than buying individual slabs.

Are there any other orchid topics you want me to do an in-depth video on? Such as a different kind of orchid?
Hi Dave, I just found your channel... I haven't checked yet but do you have videos on how to treat orchid diseases?

I have fertilizer injected into my hose water so every time I water them they get a little bit. Just like nature!
Grow in large lava rock, if you live up north grow in small lava rock. Large lava rock, less moisture, small lava rock, more moisture
That seems true.
