....Very nice update Ed,......I love seeing all the growth your getting from those plants in the Lava......the great thing about lava is it never gets too wet.....and it "allows" the grower to feed more often.....I keep a spray bottle with R/O water that has around 100ppm of Calmag.......and a few drops of kelp seaweed in it........I spray my orchids in between soakings .....and I noticed much more root growth........a weak or dehydrated orchid wont benefit from the dry cycle as much as a healthy strong one ....If mine have new shoots I feed 3x a week or more......

Good morning Rick and thank you for more advice on using the lava rock....I'm quite happy with the rock on most of my plants it's the Phal species and the Draculas which are not, as yet, showing signs of appreciation !!!
Will follow your advise on this subject and thank you for all your help....take care both of you and enjoy the week,
      Ed.

Good evening Ed, I’ve got a big grin on my face over how well your plants are doing.. marveling at your green thumb! The orange Masdevallia is beautiful, and the red on the developing bloom is fabulous. So much new growth on your plants.. I’m having positive results with lava rock and pleasantly surprised at the ease with which my plants adapt to it. Thank you for the update, hope your weekend is lovely.. take care, Bett

Good evening Bett. It's very comforting when you can see improvements to your orchids espeially when they are grown in a simple new media. Glad your plants are proving to be doing good in the rock......in my opinion potting this way does replicate their epiphytic life style. thank you so much for your many comments on my channel they are very much appreciated.....thank you and have a lovely Sunday,
      Ed.

Good for you, Ed! Ive been growing in lava rock, charcoal and river rock for almost 3 years. Ive never lost an orchid to root rot. I can feed my orchids almost every day if i want to. Thank you to Rick L. 💗

Thank you Remae for your comment. I've spoken to Rick, through this channel, many times and he's finaly got me onto the lava rock. I'm doing OK with it at the moment and your comment emphasizes that that the re-potting into this new media is the right way to go. Once again thank you and take care,
      Ed.

Greetings from Kentucky Ed! I took the plunge last week and bought a 6-pound bag of red lava rock. I repotted four of my cattleyas and two dendrobiums. I only repotted those that were showing signs of root growth. So far, they look OK. I have them all in clay pots. I soaked them in a solution of distilled water, MSU fertilizer, Cal-Mag, and seaweed extract for about 15 minutes last week. I'm like you, I think I might give them another week before I give them some more water since they are not outside, and they are in my airconditioned house. Hopefully, this might stop me from overwatering and killing my cattleyas. I hope your cattleyas thrive in their new environment. Have a great weekend, James

Good evening James. I hope you will find that tthe lava rock will ease your energy of keeping Orchids. Your feed mix looks very good. I'm refraining from watering the plants too much, if you think about it it becomes nesseccary for the plants to be able to withstand a period of dryness....or they wouldn't have any pseudobulbs to supply them with their needs, All my plants are coming inside when the weather changes to winter conditions/ I used to heat the greenhouse with a 3kw heater but that's not possible for me any more because of the high cost od energy .....and I've just heard that a 10% increase happens in October,,,,,,,,,,I wonder why they wait for winter to increase prices. Anyhow I hope your dens and cattleyas adapt to your new media....I'm sure they will.........take care,
      Ed.

Ed, your orchids are looking good. I like your updates which show their progress in lava rock. I'm beginning to see some new growths on my collection in lava rocks. I think this is because our temperatures are finally beginning to approach normal levels for the remainder of the summer months. Take care, stay safe and keep making videos when you have the time.

Good evening Pat. I think updates are very important especially to relatively new growers........i don't think you can give too many a of them. Our weather here has been very poor for this year, believe it or not we haven't had 4 days of continual nice weather this year. Pleased to hear that your plants are doing very well in the lava rock...I'm thinking of re-potting a large Angraecum in the stuff on Monday.....out all day tomorrow!!!
      Ed

Hey It's Ed! I left a message for you at Southport Flower Show. I was thinking of photographing an orchid for you, then see if we could make a habit of it IF you like my style. But I thought you were closer to me based on what a random lady told me, so I get it if you are not taking this offer up. Might just be too far to travel. And from 9pm my left arm feels weak. It's certainly a bit of a worry knowing of two people that have had strokes - and I don't know many people! Think I might have an early night and hope for the best. Hey I got a dendrobium at the show!

Hi Pop. That's the first I've heard about you giving me a message at the show I was only there from Mid-day on the Thursday. I live in Westby-with Plumptons which has a Blackpool postmark. When did you go to the show ? I can find out from the rota which lady you left the message with......what were your intentions?....have a good weekend and I hope you are feeling much better,
      Ed.

@@EdsOrchids Hi Ed I went Saturday. Left an email address and the brief message above on a piece of paper with a 'serious' man. Looks like it's too far unless you come over to Wigan regularly for some other reason, which is a pity. Would have been great. Think my arm feels a bit better after a shower. Beer and Gears (that's an Xbox game) time.

Ed I am so happy your having such success with using lava rock. I have been having the same success with all my cattleyas, mini vandas,
Phals, and paps(all I can grow in my environment) Again, your sharing of information I truly appreciate. Your bleach treament for mealies(I think scale too) has done wonders for a couple of cattleyas. I have a question for you if you may have an answer..do you find random orchid types are just more susceptible to mealies than others? I have one cattleya that is in constant attack mode from mealies.
Love all your videos, and appreciate all your information.
    Take care

Good evening Denise and thank you for your comment. Yes, the lava rock looks like it's going to be my number one media for re-potting.....going to repot a large Andraecum on the stuff shortly. P.
leased that the bleach treatment is working well for you. I think most plants can be attacked by mealies but the plants which are very much prone to attack by scale are Cattleyas.
Thank you for your very kind words,.....take care,
      Ed.

How often are watering paths and phrases in lava rock

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน

Lava rock does hold water but only in the many holes it carries so over watering should be a thing of the past. This Dracula in sphagnum hasn't dried out since I watered it 3 weeks ago so that's not a good sign for a wet/dry cultivation which almost all the epiphytes need. Hope this helps you in some way....thank you for your comment and take care,
      Ed.

Hi mary and thank you for your comment. I have never bothered much with oncidiums but I have a couple of generics in lava rock and they are doing very well.....as quite a few of my plants are doing in this media. I haven't made my mind up if the draculas and phalaenopsis will be OK in it. Much appreciate your comment thanks again and take care,
