Wow, what a root system I didn’t see ANY dead roots.. Very interesting video. This was a tedious job but the orchid is much better off in lava rock. Beautiful leaves & glad you cleaned out those awful mealy bugs. Thank you, Ed, for showing this big job.

Hi Ed, thanks for another excellent video. There are over 50 volcanoes in my city (lots of lava rocks around!) and your recent videos about Lava Rock got me thinking I should give this type of growing media a try. About bugs…mealies are, at times the bane of my existence, as well as scale. I’ve used the chlorine method you showed in the past and that has helped me save a few Cattleyas from certain death! I do use systemic insecticides but I try to limit its use for a long list or reasons. About systemic insecticides….do you have experience applying it to the roots while watering? I know people sray the foliage and the idea is that the plant soaks up the insecticide active ingredients thus killing sap-sucking insects…but I wondered If anyone has tried watering plants with systemic insecticide and obtained the same results. Thanks for your help!
Sorry I'm late with my reply to you Luis.....I can't understand how I missed it. Lava rock is brilliant now have most of my plants in the stuff. Although some plants are taking longer to adapt to their new media I am confident that they will all adapt over the next few months.. Can't help you positively on the insecticide question Luis because I've never usedit...... I only use the general plant bug killer if and when I need to use it. Not scale Avatar these are long time dead true mealies.....there is ascale which looks like mealies and it's called Boisduval scale....this nearly alway appears at the base of the leaves close to the top of the roots.....and it's a devil to eradicate. thank you for your comment ....have a good week and take care, Ed.

I use a spray bug killer wich kills the bugs on contact.....when they are dry I just brush them off with a toothbrush......it gets into difficult places. Thank you for your comment and take care, Ed.

@@EdsOrchids Thank you for sharing this secret. The leaves look quite lovely and shiny. A member of the Honolulu Orchid Society who has kept orchids for many years uses mayonnaise to clean and polish her orchids leaves. It think it might be similar to normal Salad Cream.
I hope the Angraecum sesquipedale doesnt mind the cold feet over winter masdevallias and draculas not so much but angraecum sesquipedale will be interesting to see the result
I've had this plant since it was a baby David and every year it is taken inside, with all my other plants to keep warm and escape the high cost of energy, Gone are the days when you could run a 3kw heater throu the winter months. Thank you David for your comment.....take care, Ed.
It should do well in lava rock.......it cannot be overwatered in this media........and keep it warm with not too much light.......hope it does very well for you........mine is contunuing to do well. Thankyou fpr your comment and takecare, Ed.

I think that's scale, not mealy bugs. They look very similar. And really hard to get rid of. For me, only a leaf shine worked to get gone.

Hello Mr. Ed, I have problem with those white powder bugs, and I wipes it off with alcohol . I didn't see what you use to clean up those mealy bugs ?

Just got a baby A sesquipedale, and i think i overwatered it. Roots died. Going to try small lava rock...
It should do well in lava rock.......it cannot be overwatered in this media........and keep it warm with not too much light.......hope it does very well for you........mine is contunuing to do well.
