    I’ve got my tests this week. No time for train loot searching sadly. But enough time to watch this. You always calm me down after a stressful day. Just wanted to say that. Thanks, Archie.

      Hope everything's going okay with your tests Archie - you'll have a great summer once they're over! Glad to hear this made you feel better, and good luck with the rest! :D
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    I really like the Great Western Pannier and siphons! They were made by a few companies Lima, GMR railway and Mainline just to name a few. I like to pick them up when I see them at trains shows. Keep up the great work!

    Always make sure to test it at the show! That's why I avoid collector's fairs and prefer shows, as most exhibitors are happy for you to test a loco on their layout if possible. The 009 society even let me take the loco back to my own layout (I was exhbiting) to test and were happy for me to test several locos that way before I decided which one I was buying.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely good advice there - but easier said than done sometimes! The best sellers do have test tracks, and they actively offer to demonstrate loco performance! Some don't though - and I always feel guilty asking to test a model, having been assured it works!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    I was until the early 2000's a train fair /die cast exhibitor. It's worth noting that back in those days most of the bigger exhibitors would have along the back of their displays a place to operate the locos for the prospective customer.
    Also a representative model of many of the locos and rolling stock would be unboxed and placed 'in echelon' on shelving at the back of the display. It was a lot of work but attracted customers and in South Wales and southern England we built a good reputation

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot for the insight John - I massively prefer it when a seller has a test track - it proves that they stand by the models they're selling!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    The GWR Siphons are quite versatile! When transporting milk they were attached to express passenger trains, or hauled as their own train (mainly by express locos rather than the slower goods for obvious reasons) post war they were converted for parcel use then later still as works/engineering stock. Hope that gives you a few ideas on how to run them!

    For the LMS coaches at 2:19, the idea of repainting them as a RWS accurate Annie and Clarabel sounds interesting, as they were originally LMS non-corridor suburban coaches

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is very interesting! I didn't know they were originally as large as that - pretty cool! :D

      Sam'sTrains
      The Railway Series and a few Trainz models have the ladies closer to LMS non-corridor suburban coaches in nature whereas the TV series and other media have the ladies as Stroudley coaches.

    Nice additions there Sam. However I thought I would share a suggestion where you can test almost any model locomotive at the stall before paying for it. Carry a 9 volt battery with you and put the contacts on the wheels. The model should respond to the 9 volts directly on the battery. This will work well with most 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 locomotives. But for the larger models. Just use a strip of track and put the model on the track and then stick the battery terminals on the rails to make the circuit. The model should respond if it is a runner and it is also a good way of knowing if the lights on the model also work or not as well.
    Hope these tips will help you and the model railway community :).
    All the best
    Ash.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Ash! That's true - but it's a pain to have to unbox a locomotive and test it in front of the trader... and pretty embarrassing too, if the seller has assured you that it works.... many people don't have the confidence to do that! Otherwise - yeah great idea! :D
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @BritishRail60062
      @BritishRail60062 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest with you Sam. If you are going to pay a lot of money for a pre-owned model train. If the seller is honest and has nothing to hide. I am sure that they won't mind you testing the locomotive in front of them before parting with your hard earned money. As for the embarrassing side, the only person that should be embarrased if the seller if they have lied to you when you do the test to find out that it is a dud model.
      Never be afraid to ask to test the model if it is second hand mate. Because you will find that most sellers will oblige as they are honest and will have nothing to hide. If any refuse, walk away and use another stall :). I've done this many times when I have attended swap meets and exhibitions.
      All the best
      Ash.

    An idea if you plan to buy a '00/HO' loco from a train-fair. Take a piece of long straight Hornby track and a 9v volt battery with you. This way you can test the loco there and then. Hold the loco on the track piece at one end and the battery contacts on the other end. A 9v's contacts are just wide enough for 00/HO track. For other gauges, you will need to fix up a cable with a battery clip and power track clip for the gauge of track you're using.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha yeah that's a sound idea - as long as you're brave enough to do that in front of the seller, haha!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @art0000t
      @art0000t 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still; for stall holders, it is an idea to have a 'rolling road'. That way you can show your customers they've got a runner.

    Good haul there Sam,
    I think that Dean Pannier in WW1 black was a limited edition, or only produced for a year, so is quite rare, that may explain the price. I think the LMS black Jinty is rare aswell.

      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm..I wonder if that pannier's original box was to old to use or was lost, hence why it was in the new one. And nice find with the Bachmann A1 W.P Allen. Reminds me of Simon AC Martin's "The British Railway Series." Good finds overall Sam, can't wait to see the Pannier and Jinty in action. Maybe in another vintage train running session?

    • @SamsTrains

    Got a good early Hornby M7 (249) from a train fair yesterday. All secondhand is a bit risky I’ve had damaged non-runners described as *good performer*. Fortunately most is repairable, but not all. At least at train fairs it’s possible to do a really good visual check unlike eBay. I keep meaning to take 9 volt battery with me; not sure what the traders would think about that!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gareth - that's good news! Yeah I agree - I've had that several times in the past year alone - I wonder how that happens, given that they're supposedly 'tested and working'??

      Gareth Parsons At the fair I go to, they have a shared test track where you can 'try before you buy.' So there's no risk of going home with a dud loco. I 'm surprised all fairs don't do that - it's good for the buyers and the sellers in the end.

    I've been pretty lucky with locos from the fair that i go to, the only one out five i've gotten that was bad was a scotsman that has the paint on one side of the body being different (i presume from being sat in the sun) and now the motor sounds like it's ripping itself apart. otherwise they've all been good with me

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Been lucky this side, Never bought a train that does not run.. Tho had some pretty rough running ones.
    I think if I were ever to set up some kind of table to sell it would be nice to just have a line of powered track. Just so anybody knows 100% This runs. I don't know how practical that would be just thinking here. Love the green 2-HAL there. Coencidently have been looking at those myself latley.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to hear mate! Yeah I agree - it'd be great if all sellers did that actually - and I doubt it'd be too difficult to set up! :D

  • @lukasruediger2910
    @lukasruediger2910 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not great about the fact you've had to return stuff to sellers, really shouldn't be necessary! I've always had very good experiences with sellers at fairs, some have given me contact details if it doesn't work out. I try to ask the smaller sellers if they've got somewhere to test the loco before buying it, many do take a spare track and controller with them for these things! That 2-HAL looks amazing though and you got a good price on it too!!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lukas - yeah I guess I've just been unlucky :(
      Don't get me wrong - I've had great experiences too - it's just disheartening to buy 'tested and working' models that turn out not to be as described - everything was fine with this lot though, very luckily!
