    I bought an oxford rail wagon today at Warley, and whilst looking around their stand, I was amused to note that they seem to have increased their prices on everyproduct - diecast vans now £7 ish instead of 4-5, and their carflats seemed ludicrously high. They did have some good bargains in the bargain bin, though

    I've got a few of my uncle's old mainline wagons, and they are very nice. They've got very fine detailing and lovely colours, but they are sturdy enough to withstand being dropped/derailed as they don't have as much of the tiny wire details as some top-of-the-range modern ones do. Unfortunately you can only get them second hand now.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the Mainline ones are very nice actually - I wonder if Bachmann still produce any of them?

    Hey Sam, thanks for the vid as always. You might already know this, but when you get to looking at Bachmann wagons note that the newer tooled ones (item numbers starting with 37 or 38) are more detailed than the older ones (numbers starting with 33 or 34). Have a look at photos in the preowned section of Hattons for examples. Thanks mate!

    I recently bought a couple of 3 pack 7 plank end door wagons weathered in BR grey. They run very well indeed. Take a magnifying glass to the fine detail and you will be awestruck. I bought a couple of bachmann versions and they are also good but lack the detail inside the wagon and cost more. BTW I have a short clip of a crosti 9f pulling a long train of all the aforementioned as well as some DAPOL EGG VANS in the rake. They all run fine together. I'll send you the clip if you like.

    Tilmanstone was one of the last 3 Pits on the Kent Coalfield along with Snowdon & Betteshangar. Being relatively near to the coast they all needed pumping out 24/7, I believe, but the pumps were shut down when Arthur Scargill threw his rattle out of the pram trying to hit Mrs. T.. After the Miners went back it was too late to save the mines due to nigh irreversible flooding so they were forced to close anyway.
    Kent felt emptier, somehow, when the mines had gone :/

    I have a two of the larger wagon related items from Oxford rail which are the rail gun and a war well with a oxford diecast steam roller load. Obviously you inspired me to get the rail gun but the war well was brought as I liked the load and I must say its well detailed for its price along with the steam roller on top. Hi Sam, I'm fairly new to this hobby and looking at the level of detail on these wagons, well its impressive. I suppose they are made in China and I would love to see them actually being made, I mean there's got to be a fair amount of hand crafting going on with them and for 10 quid I think they are good value for money. THIS would sway this Yank to run a pre-war British Train more than anything I've seen!!
    The lettering and details are stunning!
    £30 for three?? That may seem like a lot to you... but here in the Colonies, £30 wouldn't buy you a SINGLE US Boxcar of that quality. Some of those are even approaching $FIFTY!! (abt £41!)
    Again, for a SINGLE Wagon!! So WHAT ours have 8 wheels instead of 4... It still doesn't warrant the cost for HO Scale Trains HERE!!
    That notwithstanding, outstanding Review!

    This is a great idea, Sam. Can't wait to see how the others stack up. In your country you have some really detailed and fun modelers. When I was running HO Scale here in the U.S. I had to build the models to get the details and you had to really look at the paint work in the shops before you bought them. Athearn had the best castings but sometimes the painting was fussy, or not clear to read. I'm running N Scale now and I like the Atlas brand the most.
    Sam, if this is well received, could you do the same with coaches?

    Have you tried or considered trying out building a Parkside Models wagon kits? I recently finished building a brake van and it came out pretty good. Not perfect, but definitely good for a first time. Next time I build a Parkside kit, it should come out better now that I have experience. I will get another brake van soon and have a boxvan kit on the way.
    Not too long ago, I took a chance on a D---- GWR boxvan and had a somewhat similar experience to yours. I swapped out the wheels for Hornby 3-hole Disc wheels and there was significant improvement. No more derailing. Now to try and figure out how to retro fit Bachmann couplings.
    One can never have too many wagons. Of course I prefer to call them trucks.

    Having bought wagons from each of the major manufacturers, I have to say I like Oxford Rail's offerings the most. The level of detail and overall quality feel are fantastic given the price point, which seems to be consistently lower than Bachmann and Hornby for wagons of comparable quality. Bachmann, to me, are middle of the road. I'm happy to pick up Bachmann wagons second hand but I seldom buy any new given (to my mind) the superior quality of Oxford Rail. I've never been much of a fan of Hornby's wagons, though I did recently purchase a couple of the SR cattle wagons which are superb. Where do I start with Dapol 😂

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The HO track is compatible with 00 gauge wagons and locomotives. The only difference is the scale of the locomotives bodys. HO scale is slightly smaller than 00 gauge. This was due to Frank Hornby who founded Hornby railways. He liked the HO gauge from Europe but wanted the locomotives to be slightly larger for extra detail so he made all of his 00 gauge trains in 1:76 scale but kept the track and wheel gauge the same as HO.

    About your comment on Oxford Rail wagons, you just let me wanting to buy three dozen of them ! Perfectly agreed on your test.
    About other brands, my subjective point of view, based on the models I have recently bought, makes me say that with Hornby and Bachmann, you generally have good vehicles, but with some lemons from time to time. E. g. the “car bumpers-like couplers” series of Hornby, and some Bachmann's below today's expectation (e. g. ref. 37-706A, cattle van NE brown, a little coarse with the details).
    With D****, yes, they show their age as 1970's old Airfix series, and with outdated quality paintings and lettering. Half the price they are sold, why not, but at the same price as other manufacturers, there is no reason to buy them.
    Well, let's wait for the next episode, this would be very interesting I guess. Have a nice day !

      @@SamsTrains Thanks for the precisions, it is something to take care of. I have seen your video on the egg vans before buying one of them (what I did not do, thanks for the information !) and I am seeing what to buy instead. For some types of wagons, there is not a lot of choice... Bachmann can be a good substitute for vans, I have seen, and bought, some 20 tonners coke hoppers at Hornby's (their ref. R6831 is pretty decent for instance) and I expect somebody to make the grain wagons Dapol have on their catalogue. If the CEO of Oxford rail read this one, he's got a customer, and many more, if his society sells this kind of wagon !
      So, I would certainly be nice with the age of Dapol's molds if their wagon can stay on the tracks when you haul them, and also shunt them !
      About the crappy couplers, I'm expecting Chadwick Model Railways next video on Kadees to build my opinion on this point. Some modelers use them happily for their increased reliability in operations, but there is a potential issue with NEM versions. I'm not sure of it, and highly dubious about it (it comes from french modellers, which I do not trust, except for doing costly nonsenses and silly elitism, that's one of the reasons why I'm doing UK trains !). So I need a second opinion, and if this issue is not something big, trying to use Kadees on Dapols might be a solution. I will tell you about it when I've get more informations on it.

    Hi Sam, good video. It's not surprising that all of the underframes are the same. In full size they tended to use standard chassis as they were easier and cheaper to build and maintain. Likewise the bodies. The lettering is beautifully crisp and clear but, in full size they wouldn't stay that way for very long, in fact, they often became quite illegible. As far as weight and couplings etc. are concerned, in America, the "NMRA" have a whole list of requirements that all manufacturers are required to adhere to. These cover wheel standards, coupling height, weight for each type of wagon (Car), and many more, to maintain very high standards of running etc. It would be useful if we in the UK had such a set of standards. As far as price is concerned, some of our wagon kits can cost considerably more and then, you have to build, paint and decorate them yourself and, some of the transfers leave a lot to be desired. Rant over. Regards, Alan.

      Thanks a lot Alan - yeah I didn't mind that at all - still fantastic for the money! I agree it would be useful - too many couplings sit at the wrong height these days! :O
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    The Oxford Rail wagons are excellent value. For my use, I would need to dull down the decoration because they are as new, which I don't want. The important part is do they run well and are they good value.

      @@SamsTrains I have bought a range of acrylic weathered wood paints to experiment on a number of wagons.

    Sam, I’ve noticed that besides Bachman, you tend to stay from other American model trains. Have you ever tried MTH, Caboose Industries, or Lionel, all of which make HO scale trains. It would be nice, as an American, for you to review those to. I bring this because I recently went to the “ Worlds Greatest Hobby on Tour” train-show at the Dulles expo center. It was great, and it got me thinking about the subject of this comment. Great video! P.S I think Hornby will win your completion of the rolling stock.

      I haven't tried those - I do tend to keep things British - but I might expand one day! :D
