I. Am. Ec. STATIC! I am SO excited for the review on the Lord Nelson! You don't see it with no wind deflectors very often so it's a sight to behold! As for the Schools Class, It's alright but it's not my favourite. I'm excited to see these run around your track along with your wagons!
haha thank you!! So am I - really looking forward to doing that one - and I agree, pretty cool to see them without the deflectors! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
05:35 Van Houten's Cocoa is a Dutch chocolate company from the nineteenth century. They invented some sort of cocoa bean press which led to easier production and with that they made chocolate available to the masses. So they are kind of pioneers. The brand name still exists.
The "Hornby-Dublo" couplings are actually Peco couplings, which Hornby used under licence - they're still in production now. As for the wagons you have, I'd suggest either changing one coupling each on two of them, or if it's easier putting the peco couplers on two other wagons, to let you run any other wagons you pick up with the same coupling with the rest of your stock.
I didn't know they were still used - very interesting! Yes that'd be a good call, I'd like to have a converter wagon or two! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oh my my, a Schools class in Malachite, I haven't seen a super-detailed version of that in ages! Also, for that Lima/Dublo coal wagon, if you strip it of it's undercarriage/frames, it could serve as a coal staithe for a coal merchant or something along those lines.
I have 3 options; The first is to take the wheels off of one of the other ones and put on the wagon that has none. The second one is to take the couplings off the wagon with no wheels and add it to the one that doesn’t. Final option use them for any other maintenance.
If you don't want to swap the couplings out on those wagons, you could use them as background pieces in a video (ex: have them be in a siding with a shunter in front of them, or by themselves). For the tanker you could make it look like a wreck, perhaps also in the background.
You could use them as grounded wagons or you could sell them on or you could try and fit proper couplings to them OR you could use them for train tennis or decoration in the sidings. Your videos are amazing!
Love how you were looking for the coupling and it was next to your foot. Again the reason I love watching your videos. Can definitely tell it’s not scripted and I love thay
Hi sam! I live in the u.s, so getting a hornby or Bachmann branch line engine is difficult here. Is there an easy way to get a set or separate parts of a set in the United states. Also, great video. Sincerely, Jaden
There's two Hornby sets available with a U.S. plug, usually can find them at TrainWorld or Amazon. There's several UK model shops that also will send items to the U.S... I've ordered from four different shops in the past month and have already received my items.
Sam, there's special NEM pockets by Märklin that you can get with a hole for a screw, these are designed for fitting on custom builds or the like. You could look into them for the oddball wagons. The serial number is 288390 and they're availible on ebay.
Yeee I love the review! Nice job on it, I got a bargain on a piece of Kato North American rolling stock in N scale, so nice when you come across one, right?
Great video Sam and some good bargains added to your collection. I notice you have yet another Ocean wagon, you could say that you are swimming in an Ocean of wagons LOL! Keep safe, regards Gary.
Hi Sam, love the video and clearly you got some bargains. Can't wait to see the unboxing of the Schools and Lord Nelson. All you need is a King Arthur and you would have a full set.
I am going to be like you in this video trying to remember what I brought over the years as I haven't quite yet finished my layout. With the wagons I would replace the couplings and refit wheels to the tanker that looks a nice wagon.
The boring option to do with the wagons with the Hornby Dublo couplings would be to make one into a conversion wagon so you could mix and match that style of coupling in case you ever got any more or a Hornby Dublo loco.
This is years old but have you considered making a couple of conversion wagons/vans with a different couple on each end:- Continental/Nem, Dublo/Nem etc?
They are some good offers. I managed to pick up a brand new radial tank form Hornby directly for just £50 at The Great Dorset Steam Fair. With those wagons, you could do video where you weather them up, making them look rusty and abandoned and put them on the track side.
With the 3 Lima wagons you could use the coal wagon/open wagon as a coal staith where you take the body off from the chassis Remove a door dirty it down put some coal in it and plant next to a siding and you then have a coaling point for steam locomotives and with the tank wagon again take off the chassis dirty it down and you can add a hose for a diesel refuelling point.
11:41 I have a funny story about prices and SR 851... A while ago, my dad was having a look through Model Railways Direct, looking for bargains, when he gasped really loudly and asked for me to come ASAP. I ran downstairs thinking something bad had happened, then he shows me his iPad screen- Lord Nelson class no. 851 'Sir Francis Drake', on sale...for £9.20!!!! Obviously we paid for it, and MRD confirmed the order and took our money. However, the following day, we got an email saying that the website was wrong and they were on sale at full RRP, and refunded us our £9.20. So close, yet so far, to getting the bargain of a century!
That's actually very naughty - they should really honour any misprice as a courtesy - especially if you considered that to be false advertising! Sorry to hear they did that :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
9:39 I saw a van similar to that one in a model train store, but it was light blue and it had Marklin Couplers (I forgot the brand on the box, but it was being sold for $25)
I love these types of videos, you should go to more train fares, you can get some really good prices. looking forward to seeing the unboxing of the new locomotives. well done sam great video👍
Hello Sam, As you may or may not know, because you're across the pond, Lionel has started producing HO scale train sets in the States again. They come with engines that have wireless control and sound standard, and include crew talk in the sound systems. It would be just awesome to see a review of that set from you. thank you for this awesome channel.
Those wagons you got from eBay for 5 £ are from the west coast highlander set and it is a verry good set. and can you please do a running sesion with all of your trucks in one train?
theres a wagon that can be used to convert triang couplings to hornby dublo couplings you can get on ebay relatively inexpensively. the product number is R577 if thats helpful
For the old cars id set the ones with wheels on a siding to rust, and put the one without wheels onto a flatcar (as if it got derailed, or purchased by a historical railroad).
Very good video👍. An idea I did have was that you have a running session with some of the locos/rolling stock you've bought from train fairs. In the mean time, I look forward to seeing the unboxing of your Lord Nelson☺
Nice haul Sam but I’m waiting with baited breath for your Lord Nelson unboxing! One of my favourite locos I ordered my Lord Rodney the day after Hornby announced them and I suspect I’ll be adding more to my roster as funds allow
should add an extra siding and have like a mini breaking yard could put a helljin engine or diesel in there just to "cough" say that its no longer fit to work as its falling apart, then you can put an old couch old train that long works some old trucks that are no good and just put them there
You could use them as rides at a fun fair or the tanker is on top of the bullmack And the rest are wagons in Victor's workshop to be fixed or the could be on trucks and be moving to a heritage line
Hey Sam! You should use the wagons as well as some other broken rolling stock and engines you may have, weather them, and make a junk yard of some description. Hope you consider my idea, and hello from Australia!
Very Nice Haul! I was looking the entire video at that coupling of yours, im glad you found it before you smashed it or something. Also ive looked up the name of the ''Van Houtens Cacao'' Company because it sounds very Dutch. It appears to be a Dutch Company from Amsterdam.
Thanks a lot mate - haha well spotted, yes I noticed that when editing too! That's interesting - thanks for looking that up mate! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam liked your presentation. Have the Hornby Magazine “Schools” loco version, also Lord Nelson. In the case of the latter, my version is not DCC ready.
Thanks a lot for the comment! So your Lord Nelson isn't DCC ready? Would that be a Bachmann one then, since all the Hornby ones are, to my knowledge? Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice bargains you got there Sam! They must've been a really good deal in terms of prices of where you got it from. :) I can't wait until you do a review on your new Schools Class in the Southern Green and also the Lord Nelson class in Southern Green too! :)
Sam'sTrains: I wonder were that couplings gone. At 2:40. *it fell out of the bag and it was by your foot Sam'sTrains! At 12:17: Oh, hang on. A coupling. There's a coupling. That must be for this.
4:15 I think this is a slightly older Hornby Railways box because it doesnt show their power class. Instead it shows their class name. Is your Black Schools Class not working anymore or is it just broken with the parts?
@@SamsTrains I take the larger Hornby couplings off and there are smaller ones, which can be fitted to the two lugs, which hold the couplings, in the case of no NEM couplings. The trouble I have is with the old Lima couplings.
I wish i had the newer maunsell schools class. I have the old tender driven one from hornby railways, which used i believe the default 4-4-0 configuration from the d49. And I'm looking to buy new wagons as well and more coaches. Your videos are how i am now using hattons
Hi Sam, the 3 knackered wagons ,why dont you heavy weather them and put them in a siding with grass & weeds growing round them as what happens naturally, cheers Sam, keep it up Gary
I kept thinking the coupling is next to you and lo and behold you eventually found it. Just been to a train fair myself and got a couple of locos and some wagons, nice buy with the Schools class. Are those Peco wagons with simplex couplings they look a bit new for Dublo, sure they could be used some how either by changing the couplings or as static display in an unused siding. You must have some spare wheels for the missing ones somewhere.
haha yeah - I noticed that in shot too, lol! Glad you got some goodies too - and good idea, I might put them on static display! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cant believe your over 50,000 subs that is awesome started following you at 26,000 made up with how your channel has grown and how your hard work has paid off keep it up bud always great videos. Maybe the wagons could be moulded into one of your wacky creations maybe your own custom coupling setup?
I've managed to pick up locos for under $40USD/32.74£ at some shows before. a Mantua Baltimore and Ohio 2-6-0 (that worked better as a 0-6-0 for some reason) for $20USD in a toy show 2016 (lost it in the March 2019 flooding) and a 1979 Athearn Fairbanks-Morse Trainmaster SP 3028 for $35USD in a train show in Council Bluffs Iowa in 2018 (I still have it, but it's really picky on what amount of rolling stock it wants to haul for some reason)
Great video! I like these kinds of videos from you. About those 3 wagons, maybe replace the couplings with regular Hornby ones. If not, I guess you can take the tops off and put them on 3of your Ocean wagons, Isco you have quite a lot 😂.
Hey Sam, fantastic unboxing! I have an idea for the Ebbw Vale wagon. Ocean were based in south wales and ebbw vale is in south Wales, so why no try to covert the couplers and add a motor so you can have a self driving welsh coal train. Also you could add a light at the front! Thanks, Iwan
Is it panto season already? "I can't find the coupling" it's behind you! How long do you have to stay off of ebay for to get a coupon, I'm on there all the time can I resist the call of the bay to get a chance of £10 off voucher?
haha, just practising Barry, lol! I'm not sure about that Barry - I'd been using another Ebay account for some time, signed back into my old account and there it was! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I also have a suggestion to make. Have you ever thought of reviewing one of Frateschi's models of New Zealand diesel locomotives? I would suggest one of their DX class models.
10:51 - Try building a short length of track to the top of the stairs, placing the cheap Lima wagons at the end of that siding and smashing into them with one of those basic Hornby 0-4-0's or any other engine that you see fit.
I'm not certain - I reckon it's about 20 though! I have had some Frateschi stuff to service before - the quality was pretty impressive! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam good vid. Something that might interest you. I can across a retailer called connoisseur wren. They specialise in wren stuff but also have Hornby and Bachmann stuff at a good price I believe it’s all second hand but as new
A few weeks ago on eBay, I got 3 Pullmans with lights for £38 - pretty happy with that. Also debating whether to get a D16 for £56. I'd want to use it as a light shunting loco and idk if that's prototypical but it's the cheaper than any of the detailed lner tank engines, and its quite small
That's fantastic to hear Joe! They didn't me until I stopped using them for a while - nice little incentive to come back ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hello sam those where some good finds at trains shows and my favourite piece was the lord nelson class or the yellow tanker and I think there is a train fair in Ireland in October this year and i am thinking of going to it and love the video from david
I was so tense through out the video with the lost coupling right next to you!!! :-D
Great pair of locos too! :-)
haha I know - I noticed it there too ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@dumb crap and Another Sam :D (thats me :D)
3mins in and screaming ‘there’s that coupling’
haha - I got it in the end! ;D
lol 😂
You could combine the three wagons to make some sort of work wagon with a box, a coal wagon, and a tanker.
Ooh that'd be cool - I'm tempted by that one!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love the Schools Class, really!Do some more train fair bargains because it's awesome!!!😀🚂🚃🚃🚃

4:15 I think this is a slightly older Hornby Railways box because it doesnt show their power class. Instead it shows their class name. Is your Black Schools Class not working anymore or is it just broken with the parts?
Yeah I think that's right! It's still working - it's just missing some of it's valve gear :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I replace all plastic wheels with metal ones and you can replace the couplings if they have NEM sockets.
Yes, I try to do that where possible too! Sadly most older models like those don't have NEM sockets!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah the new ones seem decent looking - but they're very poor quality - you can hardly touch them without damaging them!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, the 3 knackered wagons ,why dont you heavy weather them and put them in a siding with grass & weeds growing round them as what happens naturally, cheers Sam, keep it up Gary
That's a good idea Gary - I'll have to try that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
you can buy a converter its a oprn wagion with a normal coupling on 1 end and dubblo conecter on the other £5.00 at train fairs so you can use them
Yeah that's right you can - though I could just as easily make one I think! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
make two so if you need to you can have 1 in line and the rest being normal couplings
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam that's great it just shows u buying stuff from other places then hornbys shop and ebay is a great way to find stuff loved it matey 😉
Yeah that's very true - always worth it!! :D
Cant believe your over 50,000 subs that is awesome started following you at 26,000 made up with how your channel has grown and how your hard work has paid off keep it up bud always great videos. Maybe the wagons could be moulded into one of your wacky creations maybe your own custom coupling setup?
Thanks so much Kevin - I can't believe it either! Thanks again for all your kind support! I do like that idea too! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What are the odds that I have just been binge watching these
haha really?!?! That's crazy, I haven't done one of these on video for years!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Crikey, that's fantastic - it's definitely worth visiting them isn't it?? I'd love some more Mantua stuff! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
10:44 for those wagons, paint them! Modify them! Customise them! Make them the 'official' sam's trains wagons
haha - I'm not sure I'd be equal to that - I'm famously unskilled at modifying liveries! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video! I like these kinds of videos from you. About those 3 wagons, maybe replace the couplings with regular Hornby ones. If not, I guess you can take the tops off and put them on 3of your Ocean wagons, Isco you have quite a lot 😂.
Thanks a lot Kris - yes that'd be a good project, if I can find some lying around!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Put the wagons as a "scrap" decoration. Kind of left to the side off the rails
Yeah I could do actually - I might even try weathering them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
If u added the first three wagons to the midland marvel set id say that’d be a nice looking train
They would actually - that's true!!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
With the 3 'useless' wagons you could try to use them as one of your 'experiments' .
Ooh good idea - I may just do that!! ;D
Thanks,
Iwan
Thanks very much mate - that is a great idea - I really want to do that with some rolling stock!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well, here’s one you can do with the Hornby freight cars, put them behind a br standard, and recreate a British railways freight train
Ooh good idea mate!! :D
you could put the wagons on a siding for show
or you could remove the body and put it on another wagon base
Good idea Ewan - I may try that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)4
Different strokes different folks people wrap differently. Not to shabby on the collection.
Yeah for sure - I thought it was cool!! :D
Congrats on 50k subs Sam
Thanks so much Adam!! :D
Change out the couplings on the wagons and give that tanker some wheels, whichever ones you prefer
Good idea - I'd be good to restore them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
50,000 subscribers!!!!!!!! Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much - really appreciate your kind support!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great video Sam will have to keep a look out for that model of the schools as I'm wanting one in a southern green
Thanks David - yes they are lovely things actually, I can recommend it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think the lochgelly wagon is from the Cornish carrier hornby train set
Ahh interesting - that was a good spot mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No west coast highlander
Is it panto season already? "I can't find the coupling" it's behind you! How long do you have to stay off of ebay for to get a coupon, I'm on there all the time can I resist the call of the bay to get a chance of £10 off voucher?
haha, just practising Barry, lol! I'm not sure about that Barry - I'd been using another Ebay account for some time, signed back into my old account and there it was!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
How many Ocean wagons do you think you have now?
I also have a suggestion to make. Have you ever thought of reviewing one of Frateschi's models of New Zealand diesel locomotives? I would suggest one of their DX class models.
10:51 - Try building a short length of track to the top of the stairs, placing the cheap Lima wagons at the end of that siding and smashing into them with one of those basic Hornby 0-4-0's or any other engine that you see fit.
I'm not certain - I reckon it's about 20 though! I have had some Frateschi stuff to service before - the quality was pretty impressive! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm really considering that lord nelson. They have it on bargain at rails of Sheffield. Will wait till your review to help decide.
Ooh awesome - I can't wait to do the review either!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Maybe you could try to replace the couplings? Or just use them anyways
I may do yeah - that'd be a good idea! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam good vid. Something that might interest you. I can across a retailer called connoisseur wren. They specialise in wren stuff but also have Hornby and Bachmann stuff at a good price I believe it’s all second hand but as new
Yes I've bought from them before I believe - very happy with them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
If u up for it; try to weather them, and use as decorations if not more.
I'd love to give weathering a try - good suggestion!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow that is excellent - great bargain there mate! The D16 is also a steal for £56!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Got an idea. Used those old wagons and make them super detail by weathread them and putting new coupons on them as a video
Great idea Ando - that'd be a great challenge! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
These are some of my favorite videos, thank you. PS, eBay in the US never gives me any vouchers. Congrats.
That's fantastic to hear Joe! They didn't me until I stopped using them for a while - nice little incentive to come back ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hello sam those where some good finds at trains shows and my favourite piece was the lord nelson class or the yellow tanker and I think there is a train fair in Ireland in October this year and i am thinking of going to it and love the video from david
Thanks a lot David - glad you liked the Lord Nelson mate!! Hope you get there, and have a great time! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do you have any Oxford Rail 7 plank wagons?
I just got one and the detail is superb
Yeah I do! They really are excellent aren't they?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You can add the cars to a wreck on the side of the track
Ooh cool idea!! :D
