  • I've never played Super Mario 64, but it is a game I always wanted to try. I've heard nothing but great things about it; from gameplay to graphics, this game is constantly praised beyond belief. Naturally, I was curious to try it out, but never got around to it until now. And what do I think of it? Watch the video to find out.
    Hope you enjoy :]

The reason the game boots you out of a level each time you collect a star is pretty simple - certain stars require the level design to change, and re-loading the level was the simplest way to accomplish that. It can be argued that it's an outdated system but the reasoning at the time was clear.

The team who worked on Mario 64 had to figure out how to make a character move in a 3d space, prior to Mario 64 3d games used tank controls or where in first person. The Nintendo team had to come up with thousands of camera designs until they found one that felt good, a insanely hard task and the fact that the control scheme they gave us is still used on modern Mario games shows how good it was. It is really advanced too there is a lot of math that goes into it. Mario 64 developed really early in the n64s life so the devs didn’t know how to optimise games on the console fully, this is the same with the NES where the early games are very simplistic. The original crash game was jank because the ps1 didn’t have a joystick, before the n64 the last console with the joystick was the Atari, Nintendo brought back a old control method, made it a thousand times better and now every games console has joysticks.

I’ve been replaying this on my Switch-through the All-Stars port where no effort was made whatsoever to improve the thing-and yeah I have a ton of gripes. (It does weirdly feel more natural on the N64 imo)
I think some of the platformers it inspired have aged like art-BK, Spyro-whereas this has aged like science; groundbreaking at the time but clearly meant to be improved upon.

This game is a milestone. The first really free roaming type of 3D game. It really was mind blowing when it first came out. This was the first game on n64 btw.
They were still figuring 3D out so of course the camera is dodgy, some of the levels look a little basic and the graphics are blocky. But trust me it looked mind blowingly good in 96. I appreciate the graphics now too, its such a classic look.
Back in the day i didn't love the game, it was just damn hard. And took me longer to get the hang of than most of my friends. But i did get used to it eventually and think it would probably be pretty interesting to play through today, i haven't touched it since n64 times.

I don’t think you’re wrong. Nostalgia can blind opinions, but Mario 64 is a cult formed out of nostalgia. Most people who love it played it a lot as a kid and still play it now. The game hasn’t aged perfectly, and not everything about it is great, but somehow it’s still played regularly and has a massive speedrunning community.

I definitely agree with this video. Although I did enjoy playing (most of) Mario 64, and I didn’t mind the graphics, there is no way in heck this game is better than Galaxy, 3D World, or Odyssey, yet alone one of the greatest games of all time (except for when it was a new game). I’m guessing that most people who think that this is better than newer 3D platformers have some serious nostalgia bias for it. It was especially frustrating that Mario controlled terribly, which made me mess up what are normally the easiest jumps not because I’m bad at platformers, but because Mario controls terribly, which makes this game a lot less fun.

I'm kind of late to the party, so dont know if anybody will see this, but I disagree.
First of, I'm a zoomer and I'm only recently this year, playing SM64, so I have no nostalgia. When you brought up how stages looked bad compared to games like Banjo, you have to remember that banjo and spyro came years after Mario 64 so they had more time to push the limits of the console, Mario 64 had to some out on launch day and 3d platformers haven't really evolved. You talked about the controls being bad, that's more of a matter of opinion to be honest, I love the controls and the freedom they give you to mess around, its like a platformer sandbox.
Something I do agree with you on is the physics, it can be a bit strange sometimes randomly slipping BUT if you can get to understand the controls more and have a bit of an open-mind you can really have a blast with both the physics and the controls. I would also like to bring up how you kinda went on about how having to re-enter levels and how much that annoyed you, why was this such a negative thing for you? Every game has its issues and smaller nitpicks but I don't think something like that should have been such negative attribute to the game. This whole video seems more like a rant then a review, and you (often) taked all your opinions as fact.
Comparing to other 3d platformers was not the best thing you could have done, since those games came years after SM64, and again I must add, they had more time to develop.

    • @Torran2Glitchy
      @Torran2Glitchy  ปีที่แล้ว +6

You’re allowed to disagree, but just to address the points you made about the points I made…
Yes, Banjo and Spyro came out later. But I would like to point out that the original Crash Bandicoot game came out only a couple of months after Mario 64, so even though it had less time to “push the limits” as other games of this era did, it still doesn’t look all that great compared to games that released around the same time.
I don’t remember the controls being necessarily bad, but I don’t remember them being great either. But I do agree that someone’s experience with controls will be coloured by their preferences, I agree with you there.
With the whole re-entering levels thing, at surface level it seems extremely minor and insignificant. And if it was something that only happened rarely, I probably wouldn’t have even mentioned it. It’s the fact that it happens so frequently that makes it so annoying. It has been a while since I played the game for this video, but if I had to guess I’d say the amount of times it happened was comfortably in the hundreds. So it’s not a big deal in a “this is one major, significant bad thing that happens once” sort of way, it’s a big deal in a “this is a small and slightly irritating thing that happens many times” sort of way.
But hey, the world is full of people with different ways of looking at things, and people are allowed to think the way they do, even if I think they’re wrong. And even though you disagreed with me, I’m glad you were willing to watch the video anyway. Cheers mate!

It's so funny because the slander against DK64 has so many similar problems in this game but it really is the "Give me the number for HR' meme applied in real life.
I'm not quite as against Mario 64 as this video is. But I do think it's funny how despite having better graphics, characters and set pieces, with more enjoyable backtracking and world connection- DK64 gets all the hate while Mario 64 gets all the love.
But I'm also convinced that most people are looking through rose tinted glasses. Especially given how many people openly say that they didn't get the expansion pak that made playing DK64 even possible.

Yeah DK64 is overly hated. I'd say that the faults that bog it down so bad for so many people is just due to it taking the B&K collectathon formula and trying to make it larger than life.
I agree that the game has aged poorly (good lord the minigames and colored bananas xD), but how SM64 has escaped similar criticism is beyond me. It's not like the collectables don't suffer sometimes from the same tedium either, some stars would be straight up unobtainable for a lot of people without guides unless you run around like a headless chicken and get lucky (even modern games in this genre can still suffer from this lol).

Is it the best Mario game period? No. thats not how games work, they (mostly) take the good parts of the previous game and improve upon it.
Is it one of the biggest milestones in gaming history? That one it is without a doubt.
Mario64 is literally the reason the 3D platformer genre exploded. I fail to find a single 3D platformer released earlier than 1998 EXCEPT for Mario64 that was any good, and all the 1998+ ones clearly took inspiration from Mario and improved upon it (Banjo literally exists because of the shakeup Mario caused, his game was supposed to be some RPG/Adventure type thing originally).
(Technically Crash was 1996, but that is also a radically different style of 3D platformer where the only similarity to Mario64 is the fact its 3D, and you jump on platforms)
Thats why its so crude feeling, its the original game. I wouldnt fault anyone that didnt grow up with it for not liking it because it IS crude and messy, but you cant simply toss a game aside because games that were designed to copy and improve upon it are better. The timing of the releases are MASSIVE for this era of gaming...thats why Banjo is superior.

  • @Liliachan88

I can't believe that nobody pointed that out yet but... Super Mario 64 was one of the first 3D games ever made. Even Banjo Kazooie could look at this game and improve from its mechanics. OF COURSE the game mechanics are better improved in Odyssee, it would be terrible, if nobody learned anything new in over 20 years.
Everything was new back then and had to be established. But this game has so many great and unique ideas and making it hard made it even more interesting to try again and again. I would recommend only playing it using save states bc yes, the controls are sloppy and it can be really hard. But you can explore so much and have a lot of fun with this if you're willing to learn and invest a bit time in improving.
Back in the 90s, so many video games used to be painfully hard, which always made me want to improve to progress. It took my sister and me YEARS to finish Super Mario 64 and for some riddles, we had to ask friends, experience a lot trial and error and ask ourself, what we could try next. But when we got forward, it felt SO rewarding.

To be quite honest about Odyssey, they wasted the opportunities with the movement. All you end up doing is cappy, jump, then cappy again and rinse, repeat. You end up doing it because it‘s the fastest way. 64‘s camera is janky, but it was one of the first 3D platformers and the fact that the camera controls were merely refined for later games only shows how good it actually was.

I do think the Super Mario 64 was a fantastic game given the context of when it released, but nowadays it does show its age.
I had problems with the controls and camera on the first times I played, but I was playing it on pc via emulation using a keyboard which is a terrible idea, once I played the game on a controller with a analog stick it finally made sense.
However I do have to agree that most of the game levels while having good ideas suck on their execution and I usually get bored pretty fast because the levels suck and I dont want to play bad levels 6 freaking times with just a little variation in objective.
Also about the graphics they are bad probably because the devs were still figuring out how to work on a 3d environment game, so I dont mind it that much as long the game is fun heck FF7 is probably one of the worst looking games on the ps1 but I can still have fun with it and get imersed in its world. but
-when I'm not having much fun the issues with the game does start to add up and on SM64 it is indeed distracting how the levels just feel like floating islands in the middle of nowhere unlike Crash, Banjo or even Spyro where everyhting is way more cohesive.
Id say Banjo Kazooie blows SM64 out of the water by fixing pretty much every problem SM64 has.

Thank you for this, man. I try to explain why I don't like Mario 64 that much and get laughed off every time I express my gripes as if they're invalid issues even though they're counterintuitive to the way the game is designed. I genuinely believe it's one of the most overrated games ever, certainly THE most overrated I've played, and that Spyro 1, Banjo Kazooie, Sonic Adventure, and yes probably even Crash 1 despite how rough that game is (at least for completion), are all worthier of the "one of the best platformers of all time" label (it's still better than DK64 though). Mario 64 isn't awful, it's just, as you said, painfully mediocre, and its incessant pedestaling by people makes that less tolerable because your expectations are put naturally high and it just starts to become annoying hearing it all the time.

If you don’t want to read all of this, that’s on you. There’s a lot I hate about this video. I think your main problem is that you played Odyssey first which pretty much mastered every aspect about 3D Mario games. Super Mario 64 was one of the first full 3D video games and that being we wouldn’t have Super Mario Odyssey or any other 3D Mario game if it wasn’t for Super Mario 64’s success and revolutionary reputation. Can I ask you why you’re comparing this game to Banjo Kazooie and Spyro the Dragon? Both of those games came out 2 years AFTER Super Mario 64. 3D games were new at the time when Super Mario 64 was released and overtime developers added more things and changes to make 3D games more enjoyable. The game looks disgusting? What were you expecting from an early N64 game? Mostly the textures used in Mario 64 were stock textures and they basically had to build the levels with those textures in mind and make it work since technology was primitive, especially when it comes to 3D games at the time. How about you try to build a 3D game in 1996. The reason why Nintendo made it to where it kicks you out of a level after you collect a star is obviously to pad out game time. If you play other Super Mario 64 projects like Super Mario 64 Plus, you can turn off the part where you get kicked out of the level. You can you beat the game WAY faster. Although, leaving the level is sometimes necessary because other stars make edits to the level like in Whomp’s Fortress, where the tower appears where you fought King Whomp. Same goes for as if you die in the level. Although if you played other 3D Mario games like Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, etc. They do the exact same thing, kicking you out of the level if you get a star or if you die. This also happens in the 2D Mario games like the New Super Mario Bros. Series. So it’s nothing new dude. The Wing, Metal, and Vanish cap are situational in this game to complete certain missions. However, they also can be used to help you complete other missions much easier like in Shifting Sand Land, where you can just fly to the pyramid, instead of sinking in the sand like an idiot. I will admit that the camera does suck and it will cause you to die in certain circumstances for just not wanting to cooperate, but if you learn how to control it and get used to it, it isn’t so bad. Super Mario 64 is my favorite Mario game of all time and that’s not because of nostalgia, I genuinely like the game and how it’s designed. I think mostly the reason why you don’t like it is just skill issue. You’re gonna suck the first time you play a game you’re unfamiliar with, but if you learn how it plays and practice the controls you’ll like it a lot more.

Well, I read your entire comment. Here is my point of view on the game.
Now, I've been playing Super Mario 64 for years and I disagree with a lot of things you said, BUT I completely respect your opinion. Firstly I disagree with the fact that the game is revolutionary and indicates that it is a good game, yes it was the basis for the next 3D games that came later But even so there is no reason to say that it is an excellent game the game is great, but it is not the best 3D platformer as many people say. The game's physics don't work very well, several times Mario slips or gets stuck in a corner of a platform, he stays on it and Mario becomes uncontrollable there depending on how lucky Mario is to not fall off the platform. Some game systems don't work very well, like the wing cap, where it doesn't work very well, even if you already master it, its controls are still difficult to control there. The game also features some bad level design, like Big Boo's Haunt where there is a star where you need to defeat a huge boo boss and after defeating it the star appears on the roof of the mansion And here comes the poor guy, it's simply HORRIBLE to climb that damn thing ! Again, I've been playing for years (this was the first 3D Mario game I played) and man, it's HORRIBLE to get up on that damn roof due to the fact that Mario easily slips and falls to the ground and the camera goes too far into that part most of the time you will fall to the ground on the course trying to catch this star. Another example of bad Level design is in the tick tock clock where, depending on the time the clock hand is at when entering the course, the speed of everything is different depending on the time the hand points when entering the course, let's imagine how it went your first time playing, you go there and enter the clock but as it is your first time playing, you will not imagine that the speed of the course changes depending on the time you enter the course, so you unfortunately enter the course with FROZEN time or with time VERY FAST and you end up trying to collect some stars there, but you fail due to the fact that it is IMPOSSIBLE to complete the course if time is frozen or extremely fast and you end up losing a life unfairly because it is impossible to complete the course so you enter again and ends up having bad luck once again and entering the course with a FROZEN or EXTREMELY FAST schedule. The Level Design idea was great, but it wasn't implemented well in the game. Another problem is the fact that some stars are confusing to get, I tend to have to do a huge hunt just to get some specific stars, and this happens due to the fact that some star names don't indicate very well how to get a certain star (this problem is also present in Super Mario Oddysey and other 3D Mario games). Now I'm going to talk about the game's damn camera, this is the biggest negative point of the game, the camera is terrible, it's not horrible enough to be complete shit but it's really terrible! Many times you will die unfairly because of that damn camera, especially in levels like Rainbow Ride for example.
Well, in short: Super Mario 64 is a great game, but it's not the best 3D Mario game of all time. If that were the case, Super Mario Bros. on the NES it would be the best Mario game of all time due to the fact that it was extremely revolutionary for 2D platformers. Or that Sonic Adventure is the best 3D hedgehog game just because it was revolutionary for the Sonic franchise (if Sonic Adventure didn't exist, the other 3D Sonic games wouldn't exist either like Sonic Adventure 2) But we all know that it's NOT!

And crying so much about the fact that collecting a star make you leave the level can't be serious neither. Can you say the same thing for Mario Galaxy ? And the answer about this constraint seems simple to me. They make you leave because depending on the star you're choosing, you'll have different presets of the levels. But maybe 20 mins wasn't enough for you to think about it.

I grew up with late-90s video games, so I’m very used to dealing with out-dated mechanics and graphics. Especially those that are overly polygonal and basic. But even though I’m very used to looking at and playing these older games, Super Mario 64 was a whole level of uncomfortable that I haven’t experienced before. That’s why I (quite rightly) criticised it.
Also, I don’t think the whole preset thing is a good enough excuse for kicking you out of a level every time something happens. Other collect-a-thon style platformers from this era, namely Banjo-Kazooie and Spyro, don’t do this. In fact, out of every game I’ve ever played, Super Mario 64 is the only one that does it. Other games manage not to have this present. They let you collect up their equivalents of stars all in one go, without having to interrupt you so it can “prepare” for the next one. Why does this game need to have it when other games don’t?

However, the reason I still play SM64 ROM hacks to this day is the character controller - No other 3D platformer has made a character controller as enjoyable as the SM64 one. Banjo Kazooie is a much more polished and refined game, but it's a slog to play because the character controller is stiff and not dynamic. Same as Super Mario Odyssey, a lot of jumps boil down to how well you can execute a button combo for cappy throws instead of enjoyable momentum based dynamic platforming like SM64 has. I will say though, the SM64 character is easy to use but hard to master, which is why I can see people not enjoying the controls.

I tried about 10 years now to like this game, but I still can’t. Controls and cameras are damn horrible, only a few courses are really enjoyable while most of them are annoying, boring and frustrating, and very importantly: They cut Luigi… They basically destroyed the Mario Bros scheme with that… Cmon, even DK64 had a lot more characters, DK64 is definitely the better game of the both. At least Super Mario 64 DS was at least a bit better than the original since finally they added Luigi and also Wario and Yoshi, not to forget the new created bonus courses. But overall Super Mario 64 is highly overrated and not an enjoyable game to me, neither is Sunshine. I’d rather like Galaxy 1 and 2, and Odyssey will remain my absolute favourite game forever I think. Nintendo had a big opportunity in Super Mario 3D Allstars to remake Super Mario 64, but they preferred just to copy and paste the exact old game with a higher definition… A total waste of an opportunity …

The levels resembling a child's scriblings add to the game , not detract. This was video games figuring out how to move in 3d. It's like a child's eyes becoming lucid to the conscious world. No other Mario game captures that vibe. There are things about this game and level design that don't hold up. I thought Banjo Kazooie was the better game when it launched and I could compare them. Criticizing it for looking like an early N64 game doesn't work for me though.... it is an early N64 game. What M64 has over later mario games is that it still feels like its taking place in the world of mario, the mushroom kingdom. Later games are Mario in X: mario in tropical paradise, mario in space, mario in paper world, mario in New York City. They don't feel like they take place in the actual world of Mario. In Mario64 there are themed levels but they all still feel like they are inside the Mario universe, not Mario going to other worlds entirely.

1- Graphics: Mario 64 is a launch title for the N64, in 1996, while the SNES was still getting games, and came in a 6 megabyte cartridge. This game is 27 years old. Mario Odyssey has a pretty small file size for a modern game (5.7GB), yet it's still nearly 1000 TIMES BIGGER than Mario 64.
I refuse to believe anyone knowing these facts could judge this games' graphics using today's standards. It's like saying old movies look bad because they don't have as much color as modern movies. lol
I can see you're playing on emulators too, this would make games like Crash and Spyro have instant loading times, which if FAR from what they used to be back then, emulation, specially for PS1, vastly improves polygonal quality (3D models don't warp and wobble like on original hardware) and you can force games to load textures in much higher resolution than an actual PS1 could even dream of achieving back then.
That's why the comparison shots where you compare Spyro to Mario 64 look so jarring.
2- Being kicked out of levels: That could be a problem and really annoying in the PS1, but again, I don't see much of a difference between being taken to the beginning of the level or kicked out of the level. Even back then, on genuine hardware, Mario 64 had ZERO loading times, everything was instant. A few second it's all it took to re-enter the level, something similar would've taken minutes on the PS1, Saturn, etc.
Finally, if you pay close attention, small details change on the map depending on the star you choose at the beginning of the level, NPCs, cannons, bosses, it changes depending on the star you need to get next.
The reason I think they kick you out when you die is simply that: You're dying too much on Star 1, perhaps you want/should try Star 4 instead.
Getting 100 coins in a level gets you an secret star, that one doesn't kick you out of the level, and you can proceed to get another instantly.

Mario 64 should be judged on how well it accomplished its creative goals in the time and context it was made. By that criteria it’s a triumph.
You’re free to dislike or even hate it, of course. And it hasn’t aged well in several key areas, especially the camera controls. But to paint it as a complete technical failure, as you seem to do, or to say that no credible person could say this is a good game, is totally wild.

AAA games are generally made to be fun and accessible to a wide audience of course.
When that Gollum game released last year, the devs issued a statement apologising for the state it was in. Clearly they weren’t able to realise their creative ambitions; the game was a failure. Gollum might be somebody’s favourite game, but it’s a technical failure. I don’t think we can say the same about a game like Mario 64, even if you don’t like it.
I was mostly responding to OP’s argument that no one could credibly claim that Mario 64 is a good game. I think that’s ridiculous on the face of it. Everything in Super Mario 64 feels random, hollow, boring and frustrating. Compared to those 3, it lacks so much personality. I am also the kind of person who very rarely rages. Eventhough I grew up playing this game, I have to agree with some of your points. Like I had trouble getting used to the camera after being so used to controling it with a right joystick in games like GTA 5 for example. Eventhough I have both Galaxy 1 and 2, I think the camera in those games are even worse than Mario 64.
To give Mario 64 credit, I like it better than Sunshine, because Sunshine has an unforgiving difficulty curve. That and the fact that it doesn't recycle the same generic levels like grassy plains, desert, snow, clouds, and castle levels like New Super Mario Bros games and Mario 3D Land/World for example. And even if they do, they add a bit of creativity like you mentioned.
My biggest pet peeve has to be the 3D All Stars version of Mario 64. Like why did they just slap the same controls and graphics and remove "So long King Bowser"? I was hoping that 3D All Stars would go for the N Sane Trilogy and Reignited Trilogy route.
Despite it's flaws, Mario 64 got me into open world games like Spyro, Banjo Kazooie, GTA, and Red Dead Redemption to name a few.
I wouldn't say that Mario 64 is a shitty game or a 10 outta 10 master piece, but a good open world game for its time.
If you wanna play Mario 64 natively, get an N64 OR emulate it. Don't bother with Mario 3D All Stars...unless you wanna play Mario Galaxy with a controller or keep it as a long term investment.

I don't think it's as graphically bad as you say, but certain things do look cheap. There's nothing beyond the horizon, as they're self-contained pocket dimensions. I absolutely love the comparison you did with Spyro, and it is completely spot on. That trilogy is just wonderful! 💜💜💜
I would like to say that I do agree with a lot of what you said, just not as strongly I guess. For the record, I didn’t play the game until about a decade ago, so I guess while I do technically have nostalgia for it, I wasn’t little when I first played it. I also played it on an emulator, and only controlled Mario with a keyboard lol… With that said, I did 100% it, and I did enjoy it.
My biggest agreement with you is the graphics. I do not think that this game looks good. Even for the TIME it released, this game did not look outstanding by any means. With that said, I genuinely am not bothered by the graphics. Graphics are one of the least important things to me in games. If a game feels fun and charming, with relatable and interesting characters, it can look like it was straight out of the 90’s for all I care. (And also priced according to its graphic’s edits of course). But I do agree that there are way too many seemingly random shapes that are just slapped together with this game.
As for the controls… Yeah, these controls are not as tight as people claim lol… Mario can only move in so many directions, and being near a ledge can cause him to get stuck on it. It’s hard for me to explain, but I think you know what I’m referring to. Where he looks like he’s in free fall, but is still technically on the platform still. That is always terrifying trying to not let him fall lol…
I’ll be honest and say that I don’t mind being forced out of a level after I get a star, but I DO mind it when I die. Being kicked out of a level (as a punishment) should ONLY happen as a game over, not just a standard death. When I die in Spyro, I’m not forced out of a portal, so why is Mario forced out of a painting? I have no idea why there’s even a game over in this game if it isn’t used for that purpose…
Anyways, for the characters and plot, yeah, not remarkable, but it’s Mario, so I can live with it.
For the camera, … UGH, I HATE the camera. Actually, I think that’s the thing I agree with you on the most. There is NO EXCUSE for the camera to be as limiting as it is. I don’t get it… Getting stuck on things is annoying, but a lot of other games also have that issue, so it doesn’t bother me that much. What bothers me is that it only gives you specific angles you can look at. Like… why???
I feel like the best controlling 3D Mario game (not counting Odyssey) is Super Mario Sunshine. Don’t get me wrong, that game has very BS controls at times too, but most of the time, after you truly master it, you can move Mario around in some of the most precise and truly rewarding ways I’ve seen from his series!! It isn’t my favorite Mario game, that would be Super Mario Galaxy 2. But I still hold it super high in terms of overall quality.
    Anyways, I feel like I’ve ranted now, I’m sorry fren ;~;
With all of these agreements of mine aside, I do actually enjoy playing Super Mario 64. Maybe it’s just because I enjoy the platforming…? I’m not entirely sure… I just think it’s charming. Very overrated, but charming ^.^

Did you use a genuine N64 controller? N64 games rely so heavily on the thumb stick and 3rd party controllers only in recent years have come anywhere close to the level of precision the original stick has. Interesting to see a more negative viewpoint about the game.

Anybody that didn't play this game when it first released will never understand. Of course after playing the newer games with much improved gameplay and controls, going back to 64 will not be an impressive game to go back to. But back in 1996, this game was fucking mind blowing!!
It paved the way for 3D platformers, thats something you could never take that way from this game. None of the following Mario games have had the same impact. But I don't fault the games, I just feel like we're at a stage in video games where you ask yourself..."what else can they really do now?".
The next revolutionary thing that can happen to Mario, is a VR that actually sends your consciousness into the world of Mario and you literally turn into him while you're connected. You move, jump, and breathe as Mario.
But for now, they can make 10 more 3D Mario games and they're not gonna be impactful or revolutionary like 64 was.

A pretty harsh tone to this review, but I don't care, because it really does mirror how I feel about this game. Then again, I've never EVER really liked any of the games, but there's just so much to dislike about Super Mario 64 in particular. Tank controls, pathetically easy bosses, annoying music, bad camera, etc.
To be fair, I don't think any N64 platformers have aged that well, not even the Banjo games.

I agree B-K is 10 times better (I also happen to think DKR is miles ahead of MK64).
Interesting points as well about the seemingly random geometry, I think B-K is better in this regard as well.
Not sure how you played but I also think to be able to enjoy this game as much as possible one should probably a) play the decompiled PC version with modern camera controls, better framerate and graphics etc or b) play it on a CRT with an RGB-modded n64 (or S-Video for best graphics on an unmodded) for surprisingly vibrant and crips graphics with colors that pop etc, an original controller with a brand new stick for super precise controls thanks to the stiffness of the stick combined with the CRT's superior input delay. Mario moves in an unique way in this game as you've discovered, where he is super sensitive to every little twitch of the stick and will have these animations before he runs where he will start tilting his body. Since the game is designed around this feature I've found it can be very frustrating to play it with modern equipment.
    From the manual:
"Mario moves in the direction that you move the Control Stick. The farther you tilt the Control Stick away from center, the faster Mario will move. If you always run at top speed, you’ll make mistakes. The trick is to make deliberate movements using subtle adjustments of the Control Stick."
The other side of the coin is that with the right equipment it can be very rewarding to master the controls for the same reason. I think this is a big part of why many enjoy it so much to this day.

Also the first levels are fine, fun even, but the further you get, the more boring they get, and the camera sucks, everything sucks.

The gameplay has it issues like being able to turn is a pain and wall jumps are way to prescise, the controls have made me not want to play the game. I also agree with the boot out system being bad it takes the flow out of levels and is only there to pad out the game. The only thing I disagree with is calling this game overrated, there is no such thing as overated you happen to like the game less than other people which is fine
