Mike Jones don't quote me on this, but I've seen forum posts saying it can cost upwards of $600 USD (probably mostly in labor/time). I've still got my BRZ on order so I've got a while before I need to worry about this, but it's nice to know it can be done.
vision1707 yeah, but it's believable considering how much work and time is involved if you go by the manual. It also seems like a lot (most?) are willing to pay it because the job is such a PITA.
I have been watching your video over and over for awhile, and finally went ahead and did it. Your video was very helpful. I was determined to not pay almost $700 to have the motor pulled.
I'm still surprised they say to replace the plugs so early they're iridium! You are doing God's work sir haha I feel confident to do this with some buddies now!! You saved me $400
Thank you for SHOWING how to do this; another video I ran across sort of described it but with so little detail it couldn't be followed. This is going to save me several hundred dollars I would have otherwise spent to have the dealer do it on my BRZ!
As a person that did this myself, I'll say, angles are your best friend with this job especially with big hands like mine. And patience. Took me about 13 mins for the coil packs, and about 30 for the plugs because two were giving me a very hard time.
Thanks so much for putting this video up! While I dread the day I'll need to do this job, having the step-by-step process outlined will make it a whole lot easier.
Buddy of mine had a Boss 302 Mustang that was a real pain. This is an incredible nightmare and a thousand thanks for showing how to do it. I’d have to add another 3 hours for mine....my tolerance for tight engines has dwindled over time. Thanks again !
I just finished changing the spark plugs on my FR-S I had 75k miles thank you !!! Your video helped me do it .... I followed all your steps and was able to do it
I did my son 2013 FRS spark plugs about a year ago I did it the same way because I was not going to start playing with the manifold and engine mounts and Jacking the engine. The rags below the coils is a good idea. I did drop one bolt had to go looking for it. The only other tip I have is use a shorter extension on spark plug socket and put the socket and extension in with socket in spark plug hole and then put another short extension on to install ratchet to remove and install plug. This job did take about four hours not easy and I used to work at a GM dealer and do driveability and emissions and lots of tune ups. 👍 for a good job. Another tool I bought is a extension kit off Amazon that has a 80 deg small gear box for $20 I am going to try to use it next time I do plugs.
OMG i changed my sparks today as you did, man that was a pain in the ass but i did it. May be going to be more easy for the next time. Thank you for this video.
Undo engine mounts, 2 nuts, use small bottle jack to lift 1 side of engine... replace 2 plugs now they are accessible.... repeat process on the other side... you can change plugs in 30mins with the right tools.
Love your idea to stuff a cloth below it. I have never done that before and spend alot of time fishing dropped nuts (I never think I will drop them before the project).
That was a tough one to watch but stoked to see it all worked out! Love that finished the job turning on the car and it runs excitement. Always the best part haha
Thank you for going through the trouble of making this video. I'm hoping to take on this task in an upcoming weekend. I feel much more confident. Bought my FR-S with 9 miles on it, Im now up to 81k mi.
Mine had over 100k miles and were still good, they were replaced during a separate job. You probably didnt have to do this but im glad you posted this video though imo it would be easier to put the car up and drop the engine slightly at an angle, just enough to pull out the plugs. Ive heard thats what everyone in Florida has been doing and supposedly its very easy. This is an interesting alternative though. The quickest and cheapest way is to cut a hole in your firewall using a blow torch. It will compromise the integrity of the vehicle and look terrible when the hood is open, but you would have lifetime access to your plugs and coils and you can't put a price on that... I guess
Yes. Always go with the iridium. Iridium is harder than platinum and copper. Higher heat tolerance. So it won’t burn up sooner. Don’t want to be messing with spark plugs all the time with boxer engines. Nice video man. Very helpful! Porsche is easier than this!
Hi dude, watching from France where it's about 700USD to change coils and plugs. My 86 has 50.000 km and I have an engine default because of damaged coil. Thanks for the money I'll save !!!!!
You can check your miles/km driven without having to turn the ignition key/switch to on. Just push the center of the three buttons to the left of the instrument cluster. Also helpful when you want to write down miles driven when at the gas pump, without keys in hand.
How did you disconnect the ignition coil connector from the ignition coil? All the videos, literally all of them, the user just removes the thing. This is not the case for me, squeezing the clip as instructed does not free the connector in anyway. Albeit I've only tried one coil specifically, I don't intend on moving further without removing the first coil.
This job is actually not that bad, a magnetic spark plug socket WILL make your life 100x easier tho just to put that out there, instead of the rubber hose trick I just bought the socket for 6 bucks and it was a lifesaver
After the plug is loose you can use a rubber tube that fit tight on the plug, to turn the plug out and in. This is from someone who puts big motors in tiny tiny cars.
Be absolutely sure to start the threads on the spark plug by hand. If you use a ratchet to start it... you can EASILY cross thread the spark plug and you have just ruined your engine. Also, torque wrench is valuable tool to have! 12 ft lb torque on those. I did that to a go-kart engine as a kid.
I got as far as removing a coil pack, and as I frequently dropped just about everything constantly and found myself cursing the gods above for condemning me to such atrocious circumstances. I lost myself in my anguish and misery, I lost all sense of time and my sanity. and then I ended up paying a mechanic $180 to replace the spark plugs. Kudos to the degree of patience everyone must have to do this job. If I end up putting another 70k miles or so on my car, I am trading it in.
i am going to pay my mechanic to watch this video in 95 k thanks for sharing your time i have come to the conclusion paying some one some times can save me time and money
I was absolutely dreading this job as i was told its for sure a engine lift job, but this makes it look much more simple! Tricky but probably no worse than a egr valve on a transit van which ive had the misfortune of doing a few times in my plant fitter days 😂. Mines a good way off at 11k but when the time comes am ready now
I'm curious if the spark plug change is easily done during the coil spring recall work. I'm at 105k miles and am not sure I've ever had the plugs changed out... but I keep passing on the recall work. Mechanic wants $800 labor, $65 parts, for the spark plug change.
Any suggestions on how to get the socket and extension out? For some reason I can't seperate the two while positioned over the sparkplug. There's not enough space to hold the socket and pull the extension. Might need to have it towed to the Toyota dealer since the car isn't drivable in its current state. 😒
This video is legendary! I've had new spark plugs ready to go but the biggest thing I'm nervous about is the extension getting stuck on the socket and not being able to remove it. Did you have to deal with that in any way? Worst case, I suppose you'd need something narrow and rigid to brace the socket in place and pliers to pull the extension off. I've seen comments of this happening to people but not how they fixed it.
I find it kind of funny after he removes the coil The motor has surprisingly went up a little bit. Knowing that he must’ve had a disconnect his motor mounts
Hi, the Phantom electric supercharger was produced by an engineer working at pratt and witney in Calgary canada. Unfortunately He is no longer making them and its too bad because it gives you a solid 40 extra hp and it is super easy to install.
Essential tools needed :
- 14 mm deep socket
- Magnetic tool pickeruper thing
- Monster
- screwdriver slotted
- 10 mm socket
- 1/4 ratchet and 3/8 ratchet
- 3/8 extensions
- 3/8 swivel
- 12 mm socket
- rubber hose
How much world this cause at the shop ?

Pay this man some respect, he did it all pretty much with just one hand
Respect but I doubt any more than one had even fits in there 😂
exactly what i tought🙏🏻
Thank you for taking the time time to do this for the frs community.
Thanks! I love the FRS.
Is it the exact same proccess for brz?

I have been watching your video over and over for awhile, and finally went ahead and did it. Your video was very helpful. I was determined to not pay almost $700 to have the motor pulled.

I bought today my sparks and now thanks to you i know how to do it. You save me a lot of money on a mechanic.

very well explained, u showed all the little stuff that get in your way that i never saw in any other video well done man thank you
Thank you for the tip about the cloths under the work area! Saved me about 10 times...
Did you run into any issues while changingspark plugs?
Just did this today thanks to your video! 20k miles overdue and Honestly this is what gave me the courage to finally attempt it... my hands hurt.
It hurts the hands but keeps the wallet fat!

Yes it looks impossible but it can be done in a couple of hours.
You know what I did? lol I traded mine in just before I had to do this and got a new one! LOOOOOL
or you can take it to the dealer and they will charge 600 bucks here in the U.S.

We all love boxer engines until it’s time to change the spark plugs. GREAT video man thank you thank you thank you 🙏
Awesome car, worth the work. I have small hands , so I think it would be a little easy for me to do this. Thank you for your info. You’re great.
Makes me reconsider buying an 86
Replacing the spark plugs is the most annoying thing to do on this car. Everything else is pretty straight forward.
Great video. I have the confidence to do this job on my FRS now. I guess I won't need to borrow an engine hoist for it, either.
Angel Christov you could loose 1 side of engine mount and use scissor jack to lift few inches to have better clearance to work
took me 7 hours hands scratched to pieces but i got it done. thanks for the video. hated every second of working on this car
Thanks, it is a tough job but the savings can be huge!
I don't even have a real car. Why am I watching this?
You can practice in your head on your imaginary car.
I have a Dodge Grand Caravan. I don't know either.
I misread it as red car and it made me lol

Thanks for your time and busted knuckles. I found a page saying the torque for the plugs is around 12.5lbs
Yep that sounds about right, you don't need to tighten them too much.

Well done and I’m confident I can do my coil packs too😊
I did it the same way. Was about two hours, but better than paying hundreds at the dealership.
B K any tips or tricks ?
vision1707 I used fuel line instead of a magnet. You can rotate it and pull it out with the fuel line since it is flexible. Just takes patience.
B K dealers wants $750 . I was floored!
Just to be clear. You said you used the FUEL LINE TO PULL OUT THE SPARK PLUG ???
vision1707 Subaru dealer told me 375

Too bad I own this vehicle too hahaha

So if I'm getting new headers I might as well change the spark plugs?

After the plug is loose you can use a rubber tube that fit tight on the plug, to turn the plug out and in. This is from someone who puts big motors in tiny tiny cars.
okay i need to know about that electric blower on your intake
is there not some kinda wire tool to make this all much easier? "Flexible Drill Bit Extension Shaft" ?
This is why I like Honda. 5min spark plugs change.

2006 honda element.. last time.. it took me about 20 minutes to change the spark plugs..
Awesome video man! Subbed and thank you.
Side question: what's a story with that electric turbo? I am working on mine ... slowly.
That is a Phantom electric turbo that I have had for 5 years now and its great. Gives me some power down low where this car needs it.
Just remember to use an extension without the tiny ball that lock the extension into the socket. If you don’t you will remember me. 😂😂😂😂
