    FYI - I no longer have ownership of PerformBetterGolf.com and am not affiliated with that golf website. Head over to www.mikepedersengolf.com
    Flippiing your wrists through impact can cause a massive power leak, and inconsistent shots. In this video, Mike Pedersen gives you a "feel" tip to fix it, then shows you a golf training aid to help you fix it fast.
    Disclaimer:
    The video tips I provide are from my own personal experience having studied over 1,000 golf swing videos of PGA, Senior PGA, and all levels golf golfers. And having an expertise in biomechanics; also having taken lessons from some of the top teaching pros in the country.
    I am keenly interested in the associated "feel" that is accompanied with each particle phase of the golf swing, as that is how I learned best myself.
    So you may have instructors who say something completely opposite, and that is okay, I'm just expressing what I personally feel. And if that can help golfers, that's great!

    I've seen 1,000 of these golf videos and this is the best one. When I was younger we were always taught to turn the the club over with your hands and swing towards first base. Wrong your body release the club, hard habit to break

    I have always flipped my wrists at impact because I have never been able ( no matter what I have tried) to take a divot after striking the ball. I have always used lag in downswing and tried to flip as late possible to square clubface and pick the ball off cleanly. Unless my timing was perfect ( not very often) the shot would be to the left, the right, thin, chunky or weak. Even a well timed shot with a 7 iron would only carry 120 m but very high. After watching nearly every youtube video about flipping the wrists and trying many technical remedies I still could not rectify the flip. I came across your video which incorporated a feel with the right palm driving through the ball and into the ground on the downswing . This seemed so simple. After trying the drill in the backyard with a marker on the ground, within a couple of minutes I was taking divots in front of it. EUREKA !!!!! In all the years of playing golf I have never done this ! Thanks Mike for this great tip and I can't wait to try it at the range. I think any approach that simplifies any part of the golfswing has great merit and your concept of a feel has definitely worked for me. Thanks again.

    Seriously, I'm a 5 handicap and I've been scouring the internet for a tip to fix my dreaded cast. Tried who on the range yesterday and voila! It's like magic. Could fade, draw, and crush it straight on command. All other ding bat tips are concerned with the left wrist, but concentrating on the right was the key. You sir, win the internet for the day. Thank you.

    great video, i'm a chronic "hit at the ball" person, been trying for the longest to learn a forward shaft lean. the way you explained the feel, driving my trail palm down at the ball thru impact, is extremely helpful. Gonna practice that asap. Kudos

    Mike, I have been studying the golf swing over the last couple of years (in retirement) and have never seen anybody do a better job of explaining the impact zone positioning as it relates to ball compression. I'm in snowy Baltimore now, but can't wait to get down to my St. Petersburg, FL, golf club later this year and work on this aspect of my swing.

  • @Solitonyc

    This is a great explanation of how a proper strike should feel like. But what most people don't understand is why they flip. Most people flip because their strike position at impact is the same as set up. Most old school coaches don't explain that to be able to allow the club and arms to swing through with hands leading at impact, their hips need to be open as well before impact. This allows the left side of the body to clear, allowing the left shoulder and arm to then swing thru without obstruction. When the left side doesn't open, your body makes up for this obstruction by flipping the left wrist at impact because the left shoulder and arm have no place to go. People only then open their hips after they hit the ball and flipped their wrists. Only on a slow motion camera can you catch this. I hope this helps you guys. I didn't figure all this out until high speed cameras made it possible for me to see it on myself and finally correct my impact position.

      The only one caveat, if you focus too much on rotating hips , you can still have the problem, you will open hips but keep weight on back foot and possible reverse pivot. In my opinion, the problem with not opening hips and collapsing the left wrist at impact is linked to overpowering with the right hand coming into impact. If you have the hands work together, hips will open naturally, it is the right hand taking over that contributes to the hips stall ...try it, lead with the left hand past impact and it all comes together. Muscle with the right hand and the flip+ hip stall happen....just my experience from feeling it that way. I am not a pro.

    Cannot wait to try this! Perfect explanation. I started flipping recently trying to overcompensate for a number of flaws. I was hunched too far forward so I fixed my posture but while standing up straighter I was hitting thin shots- HAH- so I started swinging steeply to add compression- but in reality all it did was release my hands far too early. This is such a great way to explain the right palm action. If I can add this to better posture and rotation, should be money!

    In my opinion, flipping can be avoided by having a lag pressure point established in the hands at the top of the swing (or wherever your assembly point is). The role of the right index finger has to be changed to minimize influence. Having pressure of the right hand on top of the left thumb is good, you're right, but if there's no feel for the club head, some degree of lag loss will inevitably happen. Hogan talks about pressure points in the grip. I'd guess that 99% of amateurs have no idea where the grip pressure should be so the thumb and index finger of the bottom hand rule the swing which is crazy destructive. Lag pressure, club head feel, ensures even acceleration and is essential to combat over acceleration of the club, aka flipping. Flipping usually happens from a loss of club head feel. The subconscious is feeling for what's not there so it does what it thinks it needs to do to hit the ball. Right wrist bend without club head lag/feel doesn't really address the issue completely and could lead to other complications.

    Your device seems to be like the Greg Norman Secrete I tried years ago which works when on but in the long run did not improve my game. Today understanding the physics of golf and centripetal force in a golf swing especially as it is generated in the connected circular rotation of both wrists working together; has improved my swing immensely. Of course their is no golf teacher who has shown this to date. On you tube there are so many ways I see the swing taught and none of them are able to explain the true physics of circular motion behind a golf swing. With a little bit of knowledge about physics, one can actual feel the golf swing. As opposed to wasting their time like I have, listening to the the millions of bits of information now on You Tube. You, however are better then most.

    • @SaintKimbo
      @SaintKimbo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great post ! Totally agree with your point about studying the physics of golf, I transformed my game by studying this aspect.
      Also, it's interesting how common sense and basic logic goes out the window, when it comes to golf.
      There's a million vids on TH-cam about how to FIX a slice, but very few on WHY people slice, in the course of normal problem solving you find out what is causing the problem to enable a satisfactory way to resolve it. But, in golf, logic takes a holiday, and you go straight to a 'fix' !
      I use a a plane crash analogy to describe this, if a plane crash investigation team just added a 'fix' to what they thought caused the plane to crash, instead of thoroughly investigating the cause, they would be laughed at. But, in golf instruction it's normal to resolve problems this way.
      Needless to say Golfers are still slicing as much as ever.

      One thing I learned to stop flipping years ago is to rotate my left arm in connection to my back swing as I pivot my body. I also do as Hogan recommended; to feel like my elbows are pointing at my hips. This give me a square stance feel and have eliminated the brutal swaying of my body during a back swing. On the down swing I simply kick my back foot forward and swing like hell. As I forward swing my left arm rotates naturally in the opposite direction; returning the club head perpendicular to the ball as I originally placed it. Try this. You will like the results for your self. If you try this I would be please to here your results.Good or Bad. Thanks for reading and go with a neutral grip on this one.

    Few things annoy me as much as instructors over exaggerating the "flip" move. It's really much more subtle than what most instructors portray. It sort of gives the impression that anything less than this gross exaggeration is an improvement. I think it would be better to show what the difference between flipping and forward shaft lean with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist really looks like.

    • @76MUTiger
      @76MUTiger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a DRILL for FEEL. Actual results will be far less dramatic, but a change in feel usually seems very dramatic, even though it's small. It's not about exaggerating the actual motion, but illustrating the difference in FEEL.

      The hand do this naturally if your body turn, grip and pivot are correct. With loose wrists, try getting a slightly bowed left wrist at the top of your backswing to close the face, and ignore this tip, bowed left wrist will keep the angle in your right wrist naturally.

    • @tylercole2471
      @tylercole2471 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That means you're close! Correctly bringing the club inside and creating a forward press opens the club face. The next step is to rotate the shoulders correctly in order to deloft the clubface and close it through impact, which straightens the shot out! :)
