Why You Flip The Golf Club And How To Fix It
    So what is a flip?
It’s when the clubhead gets past your hands or handle location relatively quickly. Now depending upon whom you talk to, that might mean that the club head gets ahead of your hands before impact or it might mean that club head gets ahead of your hands just past impact. For me, a flip means club head is passing your hands, shaft leaning backwards at or immediately passed impact.
A flip creates numerous issues. It’s difficult to hit the ball solid, hit the ball far and control the direction.
Let's talk about why you get the flip. So I see a lot of people working a lot of drills. They're spending a lot of time trying to get a "look" of the handle being ahead of the hands. The problem is, you have some root cause issues that are never going to allow that to happen.
Before we get into drills to fix a flip, you must understand that there are two root causes for a flip. It you don’t address those first, no drill will fix your flip.
If you have a flip, I would bet it's because you have a club face issue or you have a swing direction issue. If you do not fix those two things first, these drills I'm going to show you or any other drills you look at probably are not going to work. You have to fix your club face first. You have to fix your swing direction. That to me is non-negotiable.
How do we fix a flip?
If I don't want to have the clubhead passing my hands, there are two main things that need to happen. First, my handle location needs to remain more forward, then the location of my clubhead. So, if I want to start fixing those things, I can basically take two courses of action. I could do it with my body and hands or I can do with just arms the hands. Those are my options.
If I was going to fix a flip with my body, I put an alignment rod on the side of the shaft. With the stick on the shaft, if the club head passes my hands early, this rod starts to hit my body before I even get to impact. What's the goal here? The goal here would be to hit shots, and not have this stick run into my body. My handle needs to be forward (roughly over my left leg) and my body needs to be open. Never do full swings with this just short, slow, little half swings. You can also do the same drill with a Callaway Chip Stix Golf Training Aid amzn.to/2JJEDPa on the end of the club.
If you don't want to go to the rotation route, then you need to go arms and hands route. Again, this is after fixing the club face and the path. To use my arms and hands to get rid of a flip I would add more lead wrist flexion or bow, and more trail wrist extension. I would exaggerate the heck out of that and I'd hit short little shots trying to maintain that forever.
Now, for a lot of you just that's not going to do it. You also need to add supination or forearm rotation. If you can't rotate a lot, then you have to have hand action.
    So the main points here:
-Almost everyone that has a flip either has a clubface that is too open OR has a path/angle of attack issue.
-You MUST FIX THOSE TWO ISSUES FIRST. None of the rest of this video matters until you’ve addressed root cause.
-Once you get past that, you need to choose whether you I want to get your handle forward through pivot body rotation or go the arms and hands route.

You are like the best science instructor we had in school. You never drift off your main point, always aware of us, explanations clear, spot-on, simple and valid. Can't thank you enough. Yesterday, I was hitting balls in a golf shop focusing on lead arm supination per your video. I use regular graphite in my irons but yesterday, supination allowed me to hit extra stiff steel 8 iron the same distance---I ripped through the ball instead of glancing contact. Thank you again for your generosity and gift to us all.

I was obsessed with club head speed and developing an inside out swing path. But flipping was driving me nuts. A couple of months ago Eric , you did two videos on rotation and hands/forward shaft lean. With heaps more rotation, body more open at impact and hands leading the club, I’m now hitting straight, compressing the ball more. If I lose concentration, sure, I will inevitably revert. It’s a continuous work in progress, but paying big dividends! You cannot believe how relieved and happier I am now. Thank you so much Eric!

I think you can fix all this by just getting your downswing right, and that is starting your lower body before your club big issue their, like casting and just not getting the legs and hips and rotation first.

So helpful. Getting back into golf, and am using the rotation model with the stick. I do have to feel as though I am open through impact and the follow through is more like Trevino. If I use my hands through impact I seem to quit on the body rotation and hit it fat. So I guess I'll just hold it and rotate. I really have to fire the right side through !

I think I see, I was working on your coat hanger drill with body rotation (Chris Ryan’s you tubes helped clarify as well) and low and behold, my flip went away automatically as well my tendency to hit the ground before the ball. Awesome....I’m rotating my lead arm a lot now allowing me to hit to the left easily. Almost feels like I’m putting a spin on the ball, to curve it to the left.
So far just short shots of 40 yards or so.
Also, The ball seems like its bouncing off the club face with that cracking sound, going much further than I would expect

Hey Eric - your vids have made me a better teacher and i've been teaching for 20yrs. Love your content and you no bullshit delivery. I'd love to see the fix for getting guy who throws the club from the top. I can get him into better impact alignments doing 9-3 swings working on pivot and shaft lean to a point. i understand concepts of pivot related to impact but the throw away has to be one of the hardest things to fix, at least IMO. I've been working with this guy to long to not have him fixed.

I would supplement and try this one as well to change the shaft loading profiles: th-cam.com/video/-2dxk-lCsb4/w-d-xo.html
I would then check the basics like making sure the face is closed enough, etc.

@@CogornoGolf this is really good and mirrors a few of the things I've worked on previously to do with flattening the left wrist in the backswing. However I've never been taught this left wrist feel in the downswing properly before. For me it's the feeling of "holding off" the release. Which I guess I just feeling the hanger on the left wrist. Assume that's what it might feel like without the hanger - flattening the left wrist on the backswing and holding off the release on the downswing, as I'm a big flipper! Really appreciate this.

I think you are correct in your analogy. However I see very few golfers "Flip". Most of the problems I see is lack of release. They pull the handle through or spin the body causing an over the top move. You must release or throw the angle created in the backswing.

Wow I wish that the dozens of other videos I watched addressed then 2 caveats you mentioned. Because I’ve been trying these drills with zero luck because I have an open club face and swing over the top.
My issue is that I’ve ALSO been trying to fix my over the top swing for years with no luck. Your videos are some of the best but my brain just can’t register it after swinging like that for 20+ years. I feel entirely hopefully at this point and will try actual lessons this year.
I can play decent golf but the flip is killing my distance, sending the ball wayyyyy too high with my irons, and causing me to hit a ton off fat shots or mis hits off the toe.
Thanks for the great video as always and more importantly getting me back on track to fix my root causes before diving down the stopping the flip rabbit hole any further.

What advice do you have for integrating the drill into a full swing. I tend to revert back to flipping if I extend my follow through.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vincent!
      1. Go slow enough speed (20%) and short enough (hip high)
Do that until you can repeat easily (could be 1 day or 4 months)
then add swing length but keep speed slow until you can do 3/4 swing at 20% then full at 20%
then back down to hip high but add speed....etc etc

Mine actually flips right after impact. Even though I lag it, it still feels it stiffens up or straighten out right exactly at impact. I have that feeling that my wrist feel stiff. This happened when I started learning to have a short thumb since I used to have a long thumb. Still finding a way yor fix it. But this though led to a consistent target. Which I think is weird because I hate the feeling of flipping.
But when I loosen up my thumb, I can swing it further back and mu downswing stop flipping at impact. And my rotation feels lighter. But in terms of consistency of shots the former is more effective and more on target. So now I’m confused. Can’t figure our what I’m doing weong. How do I merge the two?

Interesting...I'm not sure to be honest. I need to see your swing on video to see exactly what you are explaining here first then I would be able to see what's happening and make suggestions.

I have flip too, but not this kind. My lower body moves way too fast and I get stuck, and I have to catch the legs by flipping the club.. Any ideas or videos?

So if no club face issue and no swing direction issue then I believe the culprit causing the flip for most handicappers is mental image of thinking we must help the ball into the air. Everything with your swing could be perfect but if your mindset is such that you believe you must help get the ball into the air then you’re doomed to a lifetime of flipping. Not many instructors discuss that at all. Have anything on that Eric?

      Hey John!
Yeah that can definitely come up for newer players! Will put it on the list.....we have some on that if you look at the "dynamic loft" or compression videos but I dont think specifically the way you are saying

I'm confused on this. I watched a few Paul Wilson videos and he seems to be an advocate for wrist flipping. It seems like your not as hard on flippers as other coaches, so would like your personal thoughts on this

@@CogornoGolf well you state that some natural release is fine but I have watched alot of vids where people talk about holding lag with forward shaft lean all the way through impact. It feel so in natural to me

Eric can you do this with woods as well? I feel like I can grasp this with my irons and wedges but my lack or rotation/early ext and flipping exacerbates

One thing I've realized that helps is to swing the club only with the lead arm.

Best tip I ever heard on this was from Lee Trevino: If you hit a flip hook, then you are probably slowing down or even stopping your left shoulder at impact. Focus on accelerating the left shoulder at and through impact. If you need a visual, watch Webb Simpson swing.

This is an older video and still great. But I want emphasize the “DO NOT DO THE ALIGNMENT ROD DRILL UNTIL YOU FIX PATH AND CLUB FACE ISSUES” part 😂. I had an instructor that kind of skipped those parts and I ended up with bruising that had to be seen to be believed. You CANNOT “just stop the flip” without addressing the other things. You’re flipping the club because you HAVE TO at that point. You’ll just beat your spleen out if you don’t take Eric’s advice there seriously.

I cannot be fixed. If I flip into impact, I hit it thin or fat. If I attempt to keep the left wrist flat, I block it way right or shank it. I'll go with the 3rd option..........Quit.

isn't the flip cause mostly because the golfer has stopped rotating, asking for a friend.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Its main due to open face or steep shaft. You stop rotating because of those 2 generally speaking
