    This is the key. Thanks. I knew about flexion and worked on it quite a bit, as I've had some great instruction, but with that little move, along with the rest of the proper backswing and follow-through, it changes everything. Strong impact at the ball is assured. It makes it possible to hit mid and long irons solidly as well. And that's been a big problem for me in the past because of lifelong flipping of irons. You da man.

    Zach, I've been pulling my irons straight left for 20 years. I discovered it was me closing the face, as in supination, too early. The fix has been to pull the shaft thru towards the target, keeping the clubface square. But this led to a loss of power and distance. Your magic move of vertically lowering my r. arm early in the downswing was a great alternate way to avoid the shot to the left. But then I started blocking to the right with the right arm downward drop. So this left arm supination may be just the ticket to restore power and hit it straight. I'll work on it. Thanks for the instructions.

    Playing 1,000 games of basketball over the last 30 yearshas left me with a serial flip. I have tried every lesson, tip, drill etc. No dice. When I attempt to keep the left wrist flat thru the shot I always end up with 2 results. Block or shank.
    That said, my eye hand coordination is so good that I can time the flip consistently at a micro moment before impact and make really good contact. Of course I hit the ball high, but at least it flies beautifully in the direction I want. I give up. I'll just play the flip and enjoy the ice cold beer when done.

    I am over 70 and have been steadily losing driving distance for four or five years. Additionally, I lost my natural draw and have tried everything to get the power back. Years ago, I was fairly long, 240-280 consistently. Very frustrating to see the power dissipating. Went out today. My two best drives, I teed the ball high and got my left hand to supinate fully, I gained FORTY YARDS on each one; Arching high draws that just kept climbing. What a sight. I first saw this tip on Cogorno's website but for some reason, Zach's explanation resonated. On drives that I didn't get the same height, I hit draws that still ran 10 to 15 yards further than normal. Getting my draw back was wonderful but getting the power back, seeing the ball carry over 255 was amazing. . Suddenly, par fives look possible to reach in two again. Thank you Zach.

    Zach - the Ballstriking Blueprint has dramatically changed my game. My game had greatly fallen off. I have watched the 2 hour plus video several times and spent a ton of time practicing what you were teaching. I re-tooled my swing to match your lessons. I went from shanks, hooks and weak shots to consistent ball strikes with great ball flights. Before, my 8 iron - if it went straight - went 125. Yesterday, I hit it effortlessly, high and far - 145 yards with a slight right to left path. Thank you!

      I hate to be the bearer of bad news but every swing change works at first. It will go away and you'll be frustrated once again just like the last time and the time before that. You will be stuck in a loop of that forever unless you stop wasting time on the next "magic move" and just learn how YOU can get that ball to end up where you want. I'm willing to bet that you've never searched for lessons on how to hammer a nail or swing an axe. Especially what your elbow or wrist is doing or what you should think about. The only reason golf is hard is because we've been told it is.

    I'm forever trawling TH-cam to find some clue to un-f**k my game. I'm 55 and gone from 12 to 20 handicap in 3 years! I often find a new "magic move" but it never works for me.......until now. Just took this to the range and then played 9 holes.........wow! I've never ever heard that sound before of ME striking the little ball before the big ball and soft draws ever time. But what amazed me more, I used it for pitching and chipping what a revelation! I urge anyone trying this to keep with it, if it doesn't work at first persevere. Zach, thank you for posting this, can't wait to get back to the range and in-grain this into my psyche. May I take this opportunity to wish you and everyone reading this a belated Happy New Year.

    Yeah I have to practice this because I can’t do it at all. I 100% agree those drills don’t get great results. They feel powerful but for whatever reason I can’t reproduce the feeling especially the alignment rod one. I do like the alignment rod drill for chipping though.

    I think the most important prerequisite video of Zach's has to be the one called, *"Lower Body Work"* from 2017. Once you get that *_sit down move_* transition worked in, these new drills will be so much easier to do.
    It was a game-changer for me! 👍

      I agree. Keeping my knees flexed thru the swing helps me hit it flush. I was straightening my left leg when shifting weight

    An addendum to my earlier comment: I have studied a lot of videos by a lot of instructors about what getting my hands ahead of the club really means in practice. My conclusion is that the hands do get ahead but only by a very specific limited amount in a very specific location in relation to your lower body. In my experience, the hands need to drop to the "right thigh area" and stay in that general area as your right hip turns forward. The rotating right hip pulls the hands, along with the lagging club head, around and through the impact area. If you get the hands too far out from or ahead of your right thigh before doing your forward hip-bump/turn, your hands will be out of position, you will get stuck, you probably will flip, and you will not have much leverage. This is my experience, anyways. But maybe Zach has a different take.

      @@sethgelnette5324 I found the wall drill really helps. Put a hybrid or wood cover on an iron. Stand with your back to a wall and your heels 8-12 inches from the wall. At the end of your backswing, let the head of the club rest on the wall. Bow your wrist like Zack says. As you make your downswing, make sure the club head stays in contact with the wall until your left arm drops down to horizontal. From there, start to rotate your forearms as your hands move to your right thigh. Your hips will then pull the hands around ahead of the club head. Letting the club head fall down the wall ensures that the club flattens and comes from the inside. Letting the hips lead and pull the hands keeps them out ahead. Works for me anyways.

    Awesome video lesson. I started feeling much better contact on the half swings immediately. You stated that it would fix the over-the-top swing, and it did. However, when I tried ramping up the swing to get more power/distance, things started to fall apart. I then added the drill of placing a glove under the right arm pit. The combo of getting the proper rotation of the wrists and keeping the right arm tight to the body made a huge difference for me.

    I'm in the example person's exact position. I can make this happen with half shots and wedges all day long. I am having a heck of a time getting there on full mid irons and fairway metals and drivers.

    Yeah this is kind of the flavor of the month thing going on. Speith has gone to this, its basically what Rahm and DJ do and he is right that bad boy is going dead left when you first try it. Went out about two weeks ago and hit ten balls trying this. Every ball was hit solid, low ball flight and basically went straight left. Might be something I look at working on before next golf season because flipping my wrist has been my first move on the downswing for 25 years and its why I really havent gotten better in ten years. Good Stuff.

    Been flipping for ten years I’ve done loads of stick drills the last year and didn’t work. I even starting shallowing with would slice so I gave up. Going to try this but I feel like it’s going to make me hook

    Can you make a video on the natural forces that cause the club to flip? I have tried as hard as I can to keep my left wrist bowed and my right wrist cocked all the way even past impact, but as strong as I am the club still flips. It has to be some physics at work here!

    Looks like a great example of the benefits of continuous learning and revision. I note in the golf instruction industry that there are two very different ways that pros teach to get the arms down and through in the golf swing - # 1 being by means of rotating the arms and bowing and rotating the left wrist in the downswing (as you recommend) and #2 being by means of bowing the wrist early, at the top, rotating the arms and wrists hardly at all, and using the core and large lower body muscles to generate speed and power through the ball (Dustin Johnston is an extreme example). I have noticed lately that there are many pros on TH-cam going to the "less rotation" method, apparently because the more rotation that there is, the more timing that is required, and the harder that it is to maintain consistency. What is your observation on this? Well known pros like Mike Malaska also advise that players can overdo the shallowing of the club in the downswing, causing them to get stuck. Similarly, getting the hands too much out ahead of the club can contribute to getting stuck and flipping the club in the follow-through. Is there an easy way to avoid this?

      Michael White great question, believe being stuck is more an issue of the hips and pelvis thrusting into the arms, rather than the arms falling behind the hips. I have learned a great deal about what the hands are actually doing from using 3D wrist sensors, like HackMotion. And I am constantly surprised at how much supination is actually occurring in a good golf swing, however when viewed in slow motion, they appear very quiet and stable. Part of the reason why this can be so difficult to implement. What you see is not what they are actually doing.

    Thanks for the movie. In general I understand your explanation. I have a tennis background as well. And I have to admit that one of the pitfalls of Djoko's backhand is that he gets the hands to far in front of the body. Anyway doesn't really matter. What I experience with this drill is that I can do it with shorter swings. But I have hard time turning it into a full swing at speed. I got the feeling that I'm low with my body/hands, and really turn my hips. Somehow I have difficulty to incorporate it with speed and a full swing. Any thougts, experience with that? Most people will suffer from that.

    I am a subscriber to your Ballstriking Blueprint. That said, it appears your left hand grip has changed from 2013 to now, meaning it appears there is more space between your left thumb and left index finger. Is it my imagination? Seeing this, I tried half swings with that left hand grip (weaker) and found I was able to supinate my left wrist easier, even though my left hand grip is weaker. Is this a correct way to get supination through the hitting area?

      Italian Stallion my grip has not knowingly changed. But yes, weakening your left hand grip will make it easier to supinate. But it also will effectively open the clubface slightly.

    at this point, Zach, I've tried everything to cure my scooping. This is the only thing I never did yet, simply because I heard it was taboo to roll the clubhead through and to lose "club face stability" but I think that has to go out the window, now.. This has got to be the missing piece. trying this ASAP on the range.

    Please explain the DROP a little clearer. What exactly is dropping? Do I drop the HANDS? Do I drop the CLUBHEAD (and keep hands still)? Do I drop the GRIP of the CLUBHEAD? Do I drop the CLUBSHAFT? And when I drop, where do I drop it to? Behind me? On the path line? The reason a tennis player drops the racquet is to put TOPSPIN on the ball (not what I want to do in golf) to swing up. Thanks Zach. Keep up t good work

      actually you want to have a feeling of putting top spin on the ball. Especially with driver, and less with irons. This will get you shallow in downswing, and extend in follow-through, and hit area. That is what you want to create.

      The drop would come in early transition/end of backswing, as you are simultaneously pressing your weight forward. Drop it enough to get the clubhead behind your hands

      Hi Mike, watch Mike Malaska - he explains all about this. He's really a master on this. In short: The hands! (You drop them straight down from the top - your trail elbow touches the hip... and more you find at Malaska's channel.

      gravity. always. But keep in mind that your club goes up in backswing. So it has to come down. You can do it by gravity. Hands will generally steepen the shaft.

    Do this right now if you have a club: Take a regular stance and swing to the top. Without doing anything with your hands, shift your weight to the left (or front) side. Didn’t your hands and clubhead automatically drop and shallow out? I’m thinking it’s still all about sequencing, namely proper weight transfer. Zach?

    -Ok great. So it's like when you're playing tennis... you wanna move the club like this guy moves his racket.

    - right, so look at this tennis guy. You obviously do this right when you play tennis so just take that same move to the golf course and imagine you're playing tennis.
    -so now I gotta go take tennis lessons and have that guy teach me this tennis move first?

    Just a observation...appears his shoulders are more inside the ankle line at impact; especially, his right shoulder. In the before video his right shoulder is behind his right foot.

    Even though I believe in the moves you're highlighting I don't think you can accurately compare it to the swing in tennis. A tennis player is typically hitting a descending ball requiring an upward hit and also the player is trying to put overspin on the ball allowing him/her to hit it with more power.

    I've been trying to rotate my forearms like this for 5 years and close the face... I simply cannot do it. I think my left arm just gets overpowered by my stronger right side.

      Try hitting shots with only holding the club with your lead arm. Then slowly start to add your other hand in with each swing. First just put the other hand as a guide, do not fully grip the club, but after 10 swings or so, incorporate the other hand.

    The reason the tennis player drops the racket down is to put top spin on the ball so not sure it is a good analogy for the golf swing.

      yes it is. you want to have the feeling that you spin to the ball. It will never happen, but it will make your angle of attack shallower, and hands more in front of the ball.

      True it is done for top spin, but also to gain more leverage and speed than if they had not dropped the racket at all.

      BOBPERIO2 I doubt it did any damage, those are two good drills for them to at least feel where they should be at impact. Maybe this new method is less forced and a more natural way of getting there

    Ok but that tennis player is not thinking about how his swing is doing what it does or where his elbow is or wrist angle or weight shift etc. All this telling people how to swing the tool in your hand is absolute nonsense. This is exactly why golf instruction keeps changing. They always claim they've discovered something new that will help yet amateur golfers over all still suck because of information overload. Do yourself a favor and forget all that you think you've learned from instructors who's only goal is to book your next absurdly priced lesson and learn to hit a golf ball just like any other task in life.

      Don't agree. Any good golf player is also not thinking about wrist angles etc. Amateurs didnt grow up with it.

    Sorry Zack, you should never try to manipulate your hands nor arms in the golf swing. Either strengthen your grip or supinate at the top like DJ or Rahm. Your student improved because he TURNED much better.

    Pls, be aware that he got all wrong with this tennis move. This racquet dropping is an OLD STYLE. Nowadays none of the young players do this - it just takes too much time. Straight move, back and forth.
