    This is such a great and detailed way of explaining how to get your wrist flat at impact. It starts when you set the wrists! And also at least for me, the grip has to be in the fingers to get it right. This is the most important part of the golf swing because you can not be a good golfer w/ a cupped wrist at impact.

    There are so many different varialbles to a golf swing and each of us is different. It is amazing anyone ever becomes proficient at golf. I have recorded my swing and have a neutral grip and a tendancy cup my left wrist at the top. I've been using the hanger too (thanks for the discount code Eric!!!). It has helped me reduce the cupping and deliver the clubface more square. I'm pushing the ball right and have a gentle draw at times, other times, I block it right. It is nowhere near as bad as the slice I played with for years. All of which is to say, your videos as well as your friend, Tom Sagutos, have helped me immeasureably. As always, thanks for the great help and keep up the great content.

    I bought that Hanger later this past summer and trained with it. It really addressed keeping the left wrist “flat.”. Helped me a lot with ball striking. And no, i don’t work for Watson Golf!

    I think you miss perhaps the most important benefit of a bowed lead wrist at impact and the resulting forward shaft lean. These conditions result in a much more stable club face. For a driver at 100 mph at impact there is a large centrifugal force (equivalent to the weight of a bag of cement) acting along the axis of the shaft pulling the hands toward the ball. Most of this force acts normal to the hand path which results in a stable club face. However, there will usually be a small component of the centrifugal force that is tangential to the hand path. If this tangential component acts so that you are pulling the grip towards the target (bowed lead wrist) the club face will remain stable. However, if you are pushing the grip towards the target the face will become unstable. The physics involved are exactly the same as the difference between pulling a trailer and backing a trailer behind your car (think of the back of the trailer as the club face). Next time you are at the range think “do I want to back the club face (trailer) or pull club face (trailer) through impact”. You may find, in time, this helps you get forward shaft lean at impact.

    I’ve seen some really good ball strikers either set up w/shaft lean and a flat wrist or preset it as their trigger the start the swing. Thought on pre-setting at address?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jesse! Traditionally if you average out all good ball strikers you would see the hands just inside left thigh at setup pretty much across the board
      So based on the ball position and club that will automatically provide more shaft lean with shorter clubs and less with long
      I explain that more here: th-cam.com/video/sJd-0eEQU0w/w-d-xo.html

    Eric, Great video! This is the most difficult movement in my golf swing. I have been practicing over and over but I can’t see any progress. I would have thought that perhaps the cause of my difficulty to flat my left wrist could eventually be related to (1) a wrong takeaway and backswing, or a (2) wrong position of my hands in the top of backswing and/or on (3)shallowing the the shaft in the down swing. Would you suggest any other of your videos on this same subject? Thanks, Carlos

      same with me been cupping and flipping for ten years now but still played some good golf. for me the setup and takeaway are fine and i can do this whole swing in slow practice. its trying to do it a full speed . i swing the driver 110-115. for me on video its like my arms are getting out raced by my body. try making sure your arms are going straight in the follow through this seemed to help me

  • @Ipdex
    @Ipdex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Brilliant Eric, that finally explains to me why my strong left hand grip can still fade the ball if I don't flatten the left wrist. I've tried for yrs to bow the left wrist in the takeaway/the backswing/at the top/try to shallow from transition but it's extremely hard for some reason for me to do that (& I play off 5). But by really making the flat left wrist at impact my swing thought I get so much better contact and feel that the body swings me through to completion and not just my arms and hands. Cracking video's man, best wishes for Xmas to you and yours. Russell :-)

    Just came across this older video, not sure you’ll see this question. The concept of the flat left wrist with irons feels good and compresses the ball on the descending iron swing. Do you recommend the same flat left wrist with the driver and its more ascending strike?

    Previously you used the Clickit training aid . Why do you find the hanger more effective than the Clickit.
    And how do you use that Hackmotion wrist sensor?

      Not sure what the click it is....have a link?
      This is the only aid Ive ever used for lead wrist that you can actually hit balls with thats why I like it so much.
      The FEELS it gives you both in backswing and on way down and through are the best I have found!

    Great stuff, as usual Eric. Question though: over the years I've tried many times to get that flat left wrist into impact, but it always results in a very closed clubface (given it starts cupped at address). I feel there's some element missing. What could I be doing wrong?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Brian!
      It does depend some on your grip. The stronger your grip the more its OK to have some cup (extension).
      Keeping in mind at impact the shaft will be more forward (which points the face to the right) you counter that by flattening the wrist. Also the body rotating open all else equal opens the face relative to setup.
      If you flatten wrist and hit left I would look at grip and release pattern
      You likely will need to be LESS ACTIVE with your release pattern and feel like you're holding on a bit

    • @brianjay123
      @brianjay123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CogornoGolf Thanks for that. I have noticed that when the left wrist is more stable through impact, I can gain 10 - 20 yards on irons. This translates from a 150yd 7 iron to 160 - 170. It's like magic! Just not consistant :) Have you done a video on consistancy?

  • @micah6615

    Every golf swing you hit in this video you ended up perfectly balanced on your left side just like the tour pros do ,should this be the first thought in our attempt to make a good balanced golf swing ,just a focus on staying balanced and finished pointing our chest and belt buckle at the target?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats definitely an important part, David. Yes thats a great place to start! Of course if things are jacked up earlier your body will have a hard time getting there as it will be trying its best to fix the earlier issues through impact
      This would be a nice way to train it:

    If we supinate the right forearm from top of BS to impact, as Ben Hogan did
    then the left wrist naturally bows(flexion) and raises(ulnar deviation) at impact.
    Others who supinated to impact are Moe Norman, Lee Trevino, George Knudson. Not bad company.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to have it JUST inside my right forearm so it is not touch. Definitely not touching lead arm....should be close to touching trail arm to start to get feels.
      It does depend some on grip

    "Anyone overdoing this is hitting it well." That's what I have found. I almost CAN'T overdo this and wrist positions have become my secret sauce. I find most my swing flaws disappear when I can keep face square or closed to the path for the entire swing. If I get the face closed at the top, I have a hard time hitting a bad shot.
