    Oh look! It's that comment with corrections!
    1. I mistakenly refer to Neku as antisocial when I should have said asocial.
    2. The CAT mural actually had BOTH of its eyes changed. Additionally, the Brainy Cat pin in Final Remix retains the Japanese design in all regions.

    One of the really interesting things about localising Japanese media to the West is how the cultures gradually become more familiar over time. For instance, certain words are no longer translated because the audience has probably heard them before. The first English dub of Cowboy Bebop altered the word "otaku" to "smelly nerd" because in the 90s most English speakers hadn't heard the term, but later dubs have kept the original, since it's pretty well known among anime fans now. On a related note, "senpai" and "kouhai" are usually left untranslated, since many English-speaking fans of anime will have heard of them, and there really IS no good English translation. They refer to a social reality that simply doesn't exist in the West, and as such there isn't anything in our cultures that you can really compare it to.

    Great video! One of my favorite games on the DS. I remember playing this game a bit when it first came out in Japanese and eagerly awaited in English. Played it and loved every second.
    One very MINOR thing that I noticed when I went from Japanese to English was that Neku used to say 集中する instead of Focus. Now the translation is quite correct since it's conveying the correct message but I always thought it was interesting they used the word "focus" instead of "concentrate" or "Gotta concentrate" since concentrating takes more mental skills to carry out.
    The point I am trying to make is that it truly amazes me how a different language can have a totally different meaning in a single one word, you could say we truly live in a wonderful world.

    7:40 rarely if ever do you see video assets changed like this, for the same reason lip flaps aren't altered. If you make any changes, it means including both versions in their entirety for both audio tracks. For streaming that doubles your hosting server space needs, and when it comes time to do the home video release, that simply wont* fit one bluray disc. The other option is release both "Cuts" separately. Discotek has done this for many kid's shows, releasing one set each for Japanese and English language versions. Or take Director Cuts of movies. Hollywood movies will sometimes go through the effort of programming the bluray splice in International credits and on screen text, so it is possible, but and extra expense that's time consuming and error prone.
    That said, "Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction" is currently broadcasting with two versions up for streaming, with much of the on-screen text edited for the english language dialogue track. This seems to be an initiative from the Japanese production side (TV Tokyo). They also directly commissioned a studio to record the english dub, rather than leave it up to a licensor such as Crunchyroll.

    Another thing about Coco is that (AFAIK) deliberately talking in a high-pitched, immature fashion in order to sound younger and more attractive is somewhat common among Japanese women. We don't really do that over here, so it might just be a case of Western audiences having a lower tolerance for her kind of behaviour, while Japanese fans find it more endearing.

Genuinely happy KH had TWEWY characters, because if it didn't I wouldn't have found one of my favourite games ever. I didn't know how much it was changed, but God I love what we got. It actually saved my life. If it wasn't for this game I'd probably not be the same person, hell might not even be around.

  • @BaronWarthog
    @BaronWarthog หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    So much stuff about localization starts off super aggressive right off the bat so I really appreciated this video's tone. I remember complaints about NEO retconning some of the angel lore in regards to Joshua, mainly with his age, I wonder if that was actually a result of the errors in the ENG reports. I definitely prefer translation over localization, but when it's not 4Kids tier it can be good. I like TWEWY's overall style for it but in general I do prefer just having to learn or infer cultural context, and I've read things from cultures far more alien to me than modern day Japan.

  • @EdomondSanz
    @EdomondSanz หลายเดือนก่อน

    If I'm not mistaken, the original game in DS didn't get translated beyond english and japanese, right?
    That makes me wonder what curious things may have happend in another languages translations for the game on the switch.
    In Spain, the term "selfie" didn't exist until... 2010? Or similar. Yet, as it's quite common now, for the switch version (who got a Spanish translation), has the term appearing on the game. That's something that wouldn't have happened in the original.
    So in that regard, the tone and semantics of different translations not only differ because of culture, but because 10 years have passed between the english localisation and other languages'

      I also appreciate noting the sub as its own localization. When you think about the demands/limitations on subtitles it's less direct than you might think.
      Which is different again from the english dub, that has its own goals, including preserving the feeling of playing the game for the first time with these localizations.

    Can't believe you did not talk about the gameplay changes. The postgame threads in international version are absolute horseshit, requiring Bravery that you will never achieve outside of grinding. It's so stupid that when you find Beat's backpack in postgame, he will likely be unable to re-equip it due to how grossly inflated the requirement is.
    In Japanese? 260 (on the Maid Costume), that's it. Perfectly achievable if you aim for 100%; they still follow the rule of "how much guts would you need to wear this" rather than some weird game reason of "lol postgame equipment needs high requirements".

    Wait, there are people who hate TWEWY'S localisation? I never imagined anyone would have particularly strong opinions about the topic. Obviously, you're going to have to do a lot of creative reinterpretation with a game like TWEWY - not only is translating from Japanese to English difficult to begin with (attempting anything even resembling a literal translation is going to produce wooden dialogue), TWEWY also heavily involves niche Tokyo subcultures and local Shibuya culture, myths, legends etc. Honestly, I'm astonished it was even localised to begin with - plenty of games never leave Japan, after all.
