I just bought the same 2012 X5 Diesel at an auction in Ct. For $6600. I love the car. Had 1 issue with an electrical malfunction message. Lost all my gauges. And all the warning light came on. Cost me $650 at BMW to repair corroded wires in the rear hatch. Funny same exact color. Good luck with yours Randy! Great cars!
The DPF particulate filters about to clog on that, so if you don’t want that car to be disabled and stranded, delete the particulate filter and get the x5 tuned!
Absolutely love my ‘04 X5 3.0i. It still runs and drives as good as the day I drove it off the showroom floor. There’s something about the X5 that just sets it apart. It drives like a 5 series sedan but has the utility of an SUV.
The BMW has a dipstick in addition to the electronic oil level check. Its on the right rear, near the bulkhead as you look at the engine. I had two of these. Also, the Diesel Exhaust fluid lasts a long time. The truck will alert you when it has 900 miles of DEF left. This will give you enough time to refill it.
BMW X5 build after 10/10 have N57 engine. These are aluminum engine block and don't have oil dipstick. Older X5 desels have M57 and those engines are bulletproof when you remove dpf and scr. And have oil dipstick.
Those newer looking parts towards the front of the engine is the EGV system that’s specific to this engine. I have a ‘13 with 86k miles and it’s runs perfectly. There is an extended warranty/service bulletin where BMW will replace the EGV system for up to 7yrs/100k miles from date of original service. It’s a big item too, $4-5k if you don’t get it done under warranty. There’s also a level sensor that goes bad in the DEF tank and you need to replace the entire system, not just the level sensor. Can be pretty expensive.
A spare tire is definitely still needed. I'm a tow truck driver I pick up these BMWs and Mercedes with these run flat tires all the time because they fail blow out the sides and can no longer continue driving
I had a pair of the pirelli scorpion run flats on a Ford edge, I was getting close to having to replace them, never got to the point of running on the run flats and the sidewalls blew out, I recommend a spare tire is most definitely needed, those little fix a flat tire inflators come with new cars now are not going to fix the whole sidewall being blown out.
Seems like a good deal. These don't have temp gauge as they tend to run hot as normal operation, but there is a manual way for finding out. M57 by the looks of it. Quite tidy for the mileage
Owned a 2011 X5D since new and now close to 100K -- great drive. Have the engine check light on and it for the Throttle Body. No performance issues so leave it on.
That x5 might have a problem with the def system which can be costly, dealerships sometimes charge $500 to clean the def filter, it might need a new catalyst and both can be cleaned if you take it out and clean it with a high pressure water hose but you have to be careful with cleaning the def filter to much water pressure can destroy it, but the catalyst is expensive new 2k-5k depending on vehicle but you can try to find one used
Sorry to hear about the accident with the 40 chevy. Hope everything turns out ok. I will miss the Caddy. I still firmly believe it would have been a better more comfortable ride for power tour.
I have a black one. 110k miles. All the "good stuff" done to it. Stage 2 tune. Sounds absolutely monster with stock muffler still intact. 32+ mpg hwy. 26 mpg would be more of a combined number. Perfectly capable of keeping up with most "hot rod" cars. Both in acceleration and handling. Once all the things are addressed and bullet proofed on the M57, it is a very, very low maintenance, powerful engine. With the new vacuum pump installed and having a CEL, they were likely having low boost issues. Probably all the things that need to go away getting clogged up and needing to go away. If it was deleted, you could immediately tell. You can see the ground beside the engine on the passenger side. A delete gets rid of about 150# of garbage. You also gain about 100 HP, 15O ft lb of torque, and about 20% to 30% better fuel mileage.
I used to own exact same car and i used to have the engine light on and almost 99% it was DPF issues. Quick tip if it is to take it out for long blast or get it professionally cleaned. Ps bought mine in uk
Biggest issue with Diesels built since 2007 is the emissions systems. For the rest of it that is really low miles. I have the VW equivilent Touareg with the 3.0 TDI, also a 2012.
Interesting purchase Randy. I was interested in these when they were new even though I could never afford them, but the diesel engine made it intriguing with all that torque. I'm surprised you are playing cat and mouse with us on the trouble codes. Perhaps a bit of a tease for video #2 on the BMW X5 x35d. Of course I'll watch it.
I wonder if it was lingering on the lot too long like others have mentioned for too much invested or did someone in the service department misdiagnose a problem and they moved it along with a red light? It will be interesting to see what you found wrong. Twenty twenty three is shaping up nicely with some really interesting vehicles. Another great video. Thank you.
You took it for a song, Randy. Those diesel engines are very popular here in Europe, and in many countries, it is possible to do a DPF delete like in the USA. With that mileage, it is a risk to keep it longer, but for car flipping is ideal. Sell it for a profit and call it a day. 👍
Under 30mpg? Wow. I'm getting 31-34mpg depending on how I drive (almost zero city driving) but I did a bunch of digging and found that the 2015 year was the best balance for me in terms of cargo space and efficiency. (of course, I am nearly always in Eco mode, because I'm boring) The USB port would be for Nav updates, and music playback (I've got a 128g stick in mine currently) The 'plumbing' on the front should be your EGR stuff. mine was replaced due to a recall this winter. The main DEF port on the passenger side is the fill to the active tank. the port on the driver feeds the passive tank, which should not need to be filled under normal operation.' ---- Hopefully that code stays away, but looks like a solid car. It would would take a considerable sum of cash, or nicer car to offload my F15 generation. ENJOY THIS ONE!
Love these high end Luxury car videos. One of the most asked questions is, is your BMW/AUDI/BENZ expensive to repair/maintain? etc and your answering those questions 🙏🏾😊
Funny to see those plastic pieces in the armrest glovebox, those used to go over the cup holder area and were connected and you could pull them to cover that area, and those are always broken lol. Even my uncles X5 Diesel same year with XDrive35 or 40d had that broken. All these sounds and everything are so familiar. The check engine light could be O2 sensors? Least thats what threw the engine light on my uncles X5 when it ran perfectly fine. He also had troubles with the Turbo later going out and other stuff all in a span of 2 months or so. He sold it really quick after that and recently got a 2006 ML 350 as the replacement which is at the service right now for annual service. Another great video Randy!
Raddy friend, I had the same problem when the machine was still new, so I solved it by replacing all the rotary pump seals. Maybe you too and the same problem (I hope) because the dde and a sensor from the engine management unit. Surely the first thing they will tell you after the diagnosis is to replace the pump. Let us know.
That straight 6 diesel , in this exact spec is something I've been looking for. Cannot find deals that good though :( This and the ML350 Bluetecs are interesting, even if people are scared of them. I had a 328d wagon N47 4 cylinder that was amazing.
Because the DPF filters usually go bad around 100,000 miles and it's very expensive to fix . That's why most of these BMW X5 diesels are traded in and sold cheap.
The "35" designation is a twin turbo 3.0 litre inline 6 cylinder. Either gas or diesel. They can be in a 3 or 5 series. I love diesels. Mercedes or BMW.
Well Randy the interior on that is really nice and not even broken into surprises still has the leather grooves in the leather good find and it's a diesel this is a steel
Wow $5k .. I bought one of these from an auction 6years ago for $5500 so good to see they haven’t lost anymore value in 6yrs… also there’s a reason they are so cheap.
Good luck with the BMW. 👍🏻 I bought a $75K 750iL for $3K years back. Worst car ever. 👎🏻 was constantly breaking, sold it the next year. And it looked like new also.
A large Dealer doesn't generally work with finance companies on cars more than 10 years old. 6k is about what you should pay as redlight special at dealer auction at most for an x5 that old would have been 10k with no lights on the dash and a smaller used dealer would be the ones to get someone financed for it, and that still wouldn't be easy because its got more than 80k miles on a German vehicle. But it's an absolute steal at that price if you can retail it yourself and not have that CEL come back on. I would also recommend looking into open recalls, because diesel gate actually impacted all diesels sold in North America; my 13 s350 still has engine warranty until I hit 177k.
To fix a problem with M57 engines can cost you pretty penny. I owned dozens of e70 35d's in the past and at present working on 3 here in Florida and sure enough parts aren't cheap and most importantly not many Techs around who knows how to fix them
When I sold cars ALL trades and auction vehicles were inspected by the shop after it was cleaned. This was to protect the dealership and customers. I worked at 4 different dealers. So. Don't be afraid of shop tags.

Thermostat to go out on these bmw and they’ll run cold which will kill the DPF’s because it’ll run rich to try keep the temp up, I would drive around with scan gauge in with coolant temp reading on

DEF does not need to stay topped up. This car has two tanks and they take roughly 6 gallons total and that amount lasts for roughly 10k miles. They should never be topped up to the lid because DEF then can get into the overflow and vent openings and corrode everything. When the DEF warning light comes on it means that the passive tank is completely empty and the other one just below it's full mark. Google has the refill instructions
Randy, don’t jinx yourself. You know dealers have units on their retail lots that they own for too much and that interest payment is due every month. Have you ever been short of cash when you have to make payroll? First thing you do is dump a unit that’s retail-ready. It’s evident that they invested money in it to put it on the front line. They wouldn’t have done that if they knew of a problem with it. It would have gone right to a wholesaler or an auction! Then they could relax for another 5 days, lol!
Diesel`s are always torque`e and that Engine is bulletproof the only issues we get with them is the Egr/cooler which there is a world wide recall on also 02 sensors now and again. Europe has millions of them and all Diesel.
Randy, with the diesel prices, Im sure the dealership had a real hard time selling the used SUV. I think your going to have a PITA selling it as well. Enjoy it in the meantime though as for 6K its a deal.
I miss my M57 what a great engine, the best ever built imo.The engine temperature is those little "risks" on rpm cluster the little ones. It seems very nice this Bmw i hope you like it. Big love and nice videos.
I think this one has the n57 engine. These tend to have problems with timing chains and timing chain guides at least that's what they are known for here in Europe.
Randy my friend,

Keep up the great work. I love the BMW series. Sweet. Doing a great job.
I think this one has the n57 engine. These tend to have problems with timing chains and timing chain guides at least that's what they are known for here in Europe.
