  • Our Experience During Hurricane Helene
This is firsthand footage captured in Asheville, NC, from Thursday September 25th to Sunday September 29th.
In this sensitive time, we acknowledge the deep pain many are experiencing. We kindly ask everyone to be mindful of others when commenting.
As of October 4th, Jillian still has family stranded in Asheville. We recorded this footage to authentically document the situation as it unfolded on the ground and to help spread the word about the catastrophic devastation so more people can help.
We invite you to join us in praying for and supporting the people affected in Asheville and throughout the states impacted by Helene.

    Why We Were There:
On September 25th, we were en route from Indiana to Charlotte, NC, with plans to spend one night in Asheville. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we found ourselves unexpectedly staying through one of the worst natural disasters in American history.
As Hurricane Helene approached, we began documenting the unfolding events to share the reality on the ground in real time. What started as a simple recording evolved into a short film that felt essential to capture.
We hope this video offers insight into the rapid, chaotic, and disorienting days leading up to and including Hurricane Helene’s landfall. Watching the footage from NC and neighboring areas, we believe our documentation is vital to understanding how this event unfolded and we hope it inspires you to help in whatever way you can.
Thank you for taking the time to watch our video. Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by this disaster, and we will continue to keep everyone in our thoughts.
    Ever Upwards and Shine ON,

A huge thank you to everyone who has watched our short film, left positive comments, and helped those affected by Helene's devastation from Florida to North Carolina. We’re truly humbled by your love and support, and we wanted to be sure to share a bit more about the journey that led us to pass through Asheville when we did.
So first and foremost, we are full-time touring musicians and documentarians, since we’re always on the road, you can find us with a camera in our hands documenting everything just like we would do on any other day. (this is how we got the footage you saw in the film)
Since 2018, we’ve been living out of our 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. Right now, it has 208,000 miles on it, the engine works but the side door is broken, and the trunk doesn't work as of yesterday night, but it still gets the job done and we’re grateful this van has kept us safe and can haul all of our gear!
On Wednesday September 25th, 2024 we loaded up all of our gear and left Indiana (as our mid-west tour had just concluded) and we were super excited to head to Charlotte, North Carolina to start a Artist Residency which would give us time and space to record new music and prepare for our upcoming Christmas tour, kicking off right after Thanksgiving at The Morris in our hometown of South Bend, Indiana.
After we left Indiana we had heard that a hurricane was heading for Florida, but we didn’t think much of it as we just thought it would hit Florida and then dissipate as it made its way to North Carolina. We expected that the outer bands would carry some heavy rain and winds. Honestly, we had no idea that it would be this catastrophic- growing up in Indiana we had no clue that Helene could maintain such power and travel 800 miles and that the eye of the storm could hit Asheville!
Now, here’s an important detail to note: as we got closer to Asheville, just 32 minutes away, the rain started pouring down so hard that we could barely see out of our windshield so we turned our wipers on full speed, and then within two minutes we heard a super loud bang on our windshield. To our shock, the passenger-side windshield was completely gone, and the driver’s side windshield wiper had buckled leaving three inches of space to see out of as the rain was pouring down. To this day we’re still not 100% sure what exactly happened to cause that windshield wiper incident, and right now as of October 6th we’re still without a passenger-side windshield wiper as the mechanic shops are booked for another week.
Once we arrived in Asheville around 3:21 AM on Thursday, we spent the night, and woke up to heavy rain, we called some local shops to see if they might be able to fix the passenger side wiper on our van. Then after talking with them we quickly realized after looking at it more closely the passenger-side wiper mechanism was extremely damaged and completely shoved under the hood and off the track, so the local mechanic's couldn't get us in quick enough to order the new part and fix it.
Since we couldn’t get the passenger side wiper fixed on Thursday September 26th, we decided to wait it out, so we booked another night at the hotel and we planned to leave Asheville with a bunk passenger wiper once the rain has stopped on Friday as the many weather stations had reported that by noon on Friday the rain would subside.
So we thought it would be safe to travel the rest of the way to Charlotte on Friday after the rain stopped as the drivers side windshield wiper was the only one working.
We hope this gives a bit more context as to why we were in Asheville and the issues that kept us there. Of course we have been feeling all of the emotions and have learned a ton from this experience and will share another video about that with you all soon.
In the mean time, thank you for all your love, light and support! We really appreciate you being part of this wild journey and above all we deeply appreciate your prayers and donations for all the people and communities left in the catastrophic wake of Helene.🙏

He has been without water and electricity for 10 days. But he said there are many others worse off than he is. I live in Wisconsin and feel like I am a million miles away. To cooperate and support Life around us IS the Natural state of the Cosmos.
It isn't rare that humans respond in a cooperative way when tragedy strikes.
In THAT situation, the politics and hatred and name calling and the religious rhetoric and judgements fall away.

Not our government though, they just want illegal foreigners coming and giving them all our resources including housing in four and five star hotels, giving them food stamps with thousands of dollars on their EBT cards. I see the illegal immigrants getting all kinds of food at the checkout line pay with their EBT cards, while the American families are behind them, buying beans and rice and having a little. The American children are basically starving, while the illegals are getting steaks and steaks. It’s unbelievable to me to see our American children starving while the illegal immigrants get all our money that we pay taxes into. American families are starving, homeless, living on the streets, while all these illegals get everything. I see it daily in the checkout lines, and on the streets. We need help.

The small mountain towns of western NC and eastern TN were hit very badly, to the point where not just homes were washed away, but also the land underneath them. The death toll is underreported in the MSM. Lots of reports of so many dead bodies that the stench is a problem. Adding up the various local reports I've seen, and doing some extrapolating for the areas that haven't been able to report, it will turn out to be thousands, not hundreds. Lots of private rescuers jumped in early, in one place, almost 40 privately owned helicopters showed up and got to work around day 2 or 3, and were doing the Lord's work until various units of government shut them down. Government people don't like it when they're not in charge. Booty-jug shut down the airspace completely over the area, before any National Guard were deployed, and NC governor was doing nothing. FEMA was late to arrive, but quick to shut things down. Lots of truckers reporting that they were told to turn around and take their loads of supplies back. Apparently the optics coming out of the freedom social media got bad, and the government loosened up somewhat. I found X the best place to get info.

I was the director of nursing for a new hospice inpatient facility during Katrina. I only agree to be the director after I was reassured that we would not try to evacuate patients since there were emergency generators on the roof and we would be in the 5th floor.
We had enough fuel for 72 hrs, so when we lost power, the clock started ticking. When we found out we were not going to get more fuel because it was being taken by FEMA and it became obvious that New Orleans would be shut down for months, getting the patients out became the priority.
It is a long story , everything that happened, but we were blessed in so many ways. I can remember it like it was yesterday.
Watching yall discuss the realization of the dire situation that was impending and the need to get out, I know how you feel.
Mobility Impaired vans arrived from the sheriff’s office from a town about 90 miles away and we were escorted to the Mississippi River bridge by National Guard.
We were told to follow close, keep our windows closed, eyes straight ahead, do not talk to anyone, and definitely do not stop.
We witnessed the aftermath of massive looting at a WalMart on the way-- empty TV boxes all over the parking lot, NOT stuff people needed to survive. Now the National Guard was there and barricaded the doors. Every pharmacy in the area had been looted. Our last night we were there, we could hear gunfire and glass breaking. The devastation was NO WHERE NEAR what has happened in North Carolina, but the violence was rising.
The most haunting memory for me was as we got to the top of the on-ramp for the bridge, there was an elderly couple with 2 pet carriers and whatever else they had been able to escape the rising water with. They were yelling at our caravan “WHY WON’T ANY IF YOU STOP AND HELP US!”
On the 10th anniversary of Katrina I was interviewed by the local newspaper. I have always said if I had it to do over again, would I do it. Absolutely, hospice patients are on the bottom of the priority list for evacuation, we were prepared to have to be there for a month- but with no fuel and rising safety concerns we had to get out ASAP.
Like I said earlier, it is a long story. A lot was learned from Katrina. Now there are plans for evacuation of EVERYONE.
But the devastation from Helene I have seen in all the TH-cam videos is gut wrenching. Who would have EVER thought that there would be this much destruction!!! Who could have ever imagined -- speechless.

I live in Charlotte, went to college at App State, my parents had a house in Banner Elk. It’s heartbreaking and surreal to see the damage done to the businesses, for streets, homes, buildings, etc. that have been part of our lives for years; now gone or completely demolished. Our friends and their animals are alive thank god, but some have lost a lot. I can’t imagine losing my mind entire life in flood waters in the blink of an eye. What happened to the NC mountains is pure nightmare fuel. Mountain folk are a different breed, IYKTK. It’s going to take a long time, years, with heartache along the way. But NC will get through it together. If you’re an able-bodied person please volunteer to help with clean and the rebuild. If you’re not consider donating .whatever you can spare, it’s going to take all of us.

So, I live in this area. The lake you see at 5:41 in the video that's the French Broad River (not a lake at all). The French Broad River crested at over 30 feet. It bested the old record flood from 1916 by 10 feet. This storm changed the landscape of Western North Carolina for ever. There are towns that are just gone. Whole towns! Chimney Rock Village, Bat Cave (yes that's the name of a town), Biltmore Village and so many others are either gone or very nearly gone. Places like Biltmore Village while they still have buildings and roads, they are no longer safe and most will have to be torn down. I was lucky in that no trees hit the house, although a large limb did crash through my bathroom. It's still a mess, but it is getting better. We got power back in my area Monday morning, but it was to late to save any of the food. "They" (I don't know if it was the government or the utilities) have brought in mobile cell truck and mobile substations to patch the cell and power for some places, but a lot are still without power. There are no shortages in the horror stories, but there are a lot of just out right lies going around right now. For instance, the story that the water is radioactive. That story comes from Wake county on the other side of the state and it was reported on before the storm hit. It is really surreal to see the very town you live in on a video like this. Now I'm hearing that Florida is going to be hit again. Please take it serious. You've got time to get to safety, use it. We didn't have that warning.

Im in SC. The Broad river runs here, along with the Saluda to form Congaree which runs on down to the sea.
      I haven't heard that rumor.
I don't know what your level of awareness is regarding the Fed gov, technology, and the fact it's always 30 yrs ahead of anything you can see.
I was standing on my back porch, when the lights went.
Now I will tell you for references what I've experienced in my life for storms.
An ice storm when imI was 8, our power was out for 3 days.
Hurricane Hugo, it was bad. We didn't lose electricity.
Tornadoes galore. I've been on the lake with my boat, ran out of gas, thank God, storm hit, we paddled to a cove, bc itgerwise we would have been in the middle of Lake Murray, crazy exposed. I saw lightening split a tree right in front of me. There was an old army barracks that was being renovated into some type of boating club, we were going to break in, but there was a boat moored on the other side, they saw us coming. We got us, the dog, and the cooler out. Afterwards, my boat was throwed up on the rocks. You know how the weather ppl are, but they did label it a tornado, if you familiar with the area, it was Cold Stream. Another one ripped through downtown (Not a big downtown) Lexington, removed every single tree tree on Mainstreet, and came down Highway 1, I-20 & I-26 both access this Highway and I live off of it. Every tree save 1 was uprooted, been there over 100 years.
I apologize for being long winded. Context is important.
100 yr flood in 2015..No loss of electricity. Water was out, all over town, messed the infrastructure of that up. So you know the Broad river, well the rivers were up on the highways. Spillways broken, damns broken on side roads.
So, two hurricanes in 2016 that weathermen totally dismissed, I kidd you not. One was Matthew, do you remember? I can't remember the name of the other one off top of my head.
      No loss of electricity.
Snow storm in '98 or '99. Lost electricity for 3 or 4 hrs. Yes I know, its SC and we don't get that stuff normally..
      So I'm forgetting some probably..
All this to show you that we didn't lose power or if so, very minimal..I'm going somewhere with this.
I was up all night during Helene. If any of yall have not had the pleasure of watching the weather person try to report bad weather, whatever it may be, you must experience it.
NOAA is in charge now, weather person can't scratch their ass unless NOAA sends whatever it's called (telex?) and tells them to sctatch their ass. I'm not kidding, it was the clown show..
One day back earlier this year, or last year, I saw a local weather woman, her hair went from nice, tame, bob cut, to standing on end w/in a span of 20 min.
2 tornados touched down that evening, I kept saying WTF is wrong w her, I felt bad, thought she was new. It was NOAA sending updates that were wrong, not on time, she was close to tears. They went on a long break and when they came back she had help. They explained it then.
It's the dumbest mofo ever. I've some dumb things in my day. This hands down takes the win..ya'll need to see it to believe it.
So I came outside, it was windy but calm, rainy some. All of a sudden the wind fucking picked the fuck up, my Choo's hair was standing on end..she sensed something and so did I. The air was charged, and then the power went out. It was not normal. It was like, house lights went one by one, and so forth coming towards me. It kund of made me want to run, it woke up my flight/fight response. Then all hell broke loose.
That is when we suffered the damage, nothing major. Our back neighbor's fence, wood, went down. Just things like that.
      Nothing about 5hat was normal.
We were without electricity for 13 or 14 hours, not a big deal. Except what I wrote above, and going back years, nothing except the ice storm.
Hurricanes diminish over land. This strengthened.
They can make it rain. Im nit saying that they create rain cloyds, but hell by now they may.
Technology is ajways 30 trs ahead of the latest that you know about or can see.
What if they sent a burst of nuclear power through through Helene?
      I live in SC
