+Rahmel Freeman you may want to check out this link regarding Ford Edge PTU, it's the same used in the CX-9,
it might not be a seal problem at all but the oil leaking out of the vent valve on top due to degraded oil,
you just need to change the oil, hope this helps you:

+David Smith ok I'll check it out now thanks, I'm stumped on what it can be, sometimes from a dead stop there's a clunk when accelerating that is felt pretty well in first gear going into 2nd. it just doest it once, not a stutter, just one thump that you can feel, but it's not everyday, every once in a while. about a week ago it started making noise, does the ptu make noise when contaminated or low on fluid?

+Rahmel Freeman yes, the oil in your PTU is degraded, please see the CX-9 forum, there is tons of information in this link that I think you will find helpful, the main symptoms are foul pungent burning oil smell and dark grey oil drops after a drive: www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123847373-Changing-CX-9-transfer-case-gear-oil-%28photos%29

Thank you. I'd like to buy PTU for replacement.
Which one is better, Ford genuine part or Dorman product?

I ordered the kit from eBay. But you still need the seal remover. You can DIY as I did.

I have a 10' Lincoln MKS, and have had to change the head gaskets, upon which I removed the right wheel and intermediate shaft from the ptu. The instructions swear that you should replace the intermediate shaft seal and deflector anytime removing the intermediate shaft, else "component damage could result." I've had no leaks from the ptu, but I'm aware that anytime you break a seal you should generally consider replacing it. My question, for anyone knowledgeable on the issue, is do you think I really need to replace the seal/deflector? I've priced just these special tools from the video on ebay and they add up to $700 (!!). Also, if I do need to replace the seal/deflector, do you have any viable tool replacements to recommend, other than these in the video? The tools really don't seem like anything special to cost this much $$. On that note, heck I would even consider renting these tools from one of you guys. I would think that renting out this stuff could be a viable business, because this is ridiculous.... hmm. Thanks!!

Ron Taylor try to push a thin sheet of nylon between the seal and the shaft without damaging the seal. That's way you prevent the shaft sharp splines from damaging it.

I'm also looking for the seal kit. Cannot find it on ebay.

The seal kit part number is 8T4Z-7275-CD.
Google will give you several places to buy it.
Same for the seal installers, which are a necessity.
      205-882 & 205-883.
If you can DIY with pulling the seals and with the seal driver handle, that should be all you need.
For a full install/removal kit. You also need the following tools.
      100-001, 205-241, 205-907, & 308-125

Hi. What lubricant do you use for CV Joint lubricant? Didn't you turn off a spherical support in this video? Thanks.

I don't need 4x4 traction for my daily life. could i remove one or two gears from the PTU and have a 4x2 car? To avoid breaking my Ptu which, for now, is intact?
