Hi , thank you for the explaination .. i have a question please : do you guys manufacture this PTU from scratch and make it similar to Ford PTU with the changes you highlighted in the vedio ? Or you just make the changes on the brand new Frod PTU and sell it ?
That's what I did. Scary since I never did something like that before, but actually not too bad. I had to use a ratchet instead of a tap wrench for creating the threads though because the exhausts got in the way of the tap wrench when rotating. Then I put in a 1/4 inch NPT plug with some permatex thread sealant and all is well. Only had to do this on the rear diff though.
Your video was so helpful I went ahead and bit the bullet! Difference between what Ford offered and your Dorman wasn't much. I had my local mechanic install a Dorman on my 2013 Ford Edge. I paid $3000 for the entire repair which from all the calls I made was around average. I noticed the old PTU smell right away after the work and thought it was the old PTU fluid burning off? Or so I thought. So it's been a couple weeks and while changing my oil, I also wanted to see my new Dorman but noticed it was leaking fresh fluid. The fluid was dripping off, translucent and amber color. The old fluid was black sludge. I checked my trans fluid and it's topped off and good color. Off the top of your head, what do you think about this? I'm taking it back Monday and just wanted your opinion or insight before I get there. I hope it's just a lose bolt or something. Thanks for any help.
Thanks for getting back to me, I could see the passenger side seal, and trans connection weren't leaking. It was coming from the vent and it's too hard to over-fill given the location of the fill hole. So I think it was my fault. I got sick (COVID) and couldn't take it back this past Monday but while watching videos I came across the Importance of good tire wear and how it relates to a PTU. The gear stress of uneven treadwear and how it can cause the PTU gears to turn at different speeds, builds up friction/heat for longer than the PTU was designed for. I had only 2 tires replaced in the past and also didn't keep up with the rotation the way I should. I don't know the diameters between tire diameters but I can plainly see the difference in the wear. Now that I understand this point, I realize it was my fault. Luckily my PTU is very new. I will add more fluid then take it up to get 4 new tires and also get a 4 wheel alignment. I feel like this will solve the leak. If you don't hear back from me then that is what happened.
Hello, Thank you for your kind words! To answer your question, Unfortunately we can't price a job or even approximate a cost, as labor rates change in different areas and at different shops.
I've seen this Dorman box available below $700 at certain web retailers. Figure 6 hours for a mechanic if you can't do it yourself (it's a handful to be sure), so I'd guess about $1200 - $1500.
Hello, unfortunately we do not offer the part you are looking for that fits your vehicle. I will let the product team know of your new product idea. Thank you!
I heard a mechanic say that the PTU's (PTO's) also fail because some owners replace only two tires at the time, and that unevenly worn tires cause accelerated wear on the internals of the unit. Until now, I only heard that was a problem with some Jeep transffer case/transmissions, but never Ford. Is it true, or just a myth?
Hello! Great question! Yes, it is a good practice on AWD vehicles to replace all 4 at same time to prevent uneven wear from affecting driveline components such as ptu/pto.
Hello! Unfortunately, we do not offer one at this time. The only one we do offer at this time is for the non-ecoboost models. I apologize for the inconvenience. I will let our product team know of your new product idea. Thank you!
I do very much appreciate the response I received below, but see that the PTU featured in this video is model 600-234XD, and is apparently only for 2015 and earlier Fords. My two cars ('16 Taurus and '18 Explorer) are being shown to use what looks like a factory unit PN 600-239. I am unaware of any across-the-board changes Ford made to the PTU in 2016 that would prevent the 234XD from being used in 201 +. I would just like a better explanation, if possible, because I did already have to have the PTU in the Explorer replaced, so obviously there was no magic cure in 2016.
Hi Scott, we followed Ford's OE fitment as to what part number fits what applications. They had many changes such as gearing changes and the splined shaft changed, just to name a few. Hope that helps!
Good day, I have a 2013 Ford Police Interceptor Sedan non turbo. It is I believe in the process of failing. What part number corresponds to a correct replacement unit, as I have visited the web page for proper fitment and none are available for a police interceptor. Thank you.
Hello, these are all the parts that we offer for your year, make and model. I do not see a PTU listed but I will let my product team know of your new product idea.

Good price, about what the Ford unit is. Does this require the same plastic tool that Ford requires for inserting the shafts through? I changed the PTU in my wife's Edge and we dropped the back of the subframe down for access. If this was available at that time I would have used this instead.
Hi John, yes! We would recommend still following the OE service guide for installing the shafts, which would use the plastic tool you are describing that ford recommends.
What's your warranty? What is your new seal material? How have you addressed your early seal failures as described in the comments? Do you use new Ford internal parts and case?
Hi Matthew, we list part # 600-239 as the correct part. To your question - it is because Ford applications says the SHO had different gearing than the standard Taurus.
Bought a new ptu for a 2010 Lincoln mkx right off the passenger side seal failed, had to replace it now 1 year later the rear pinion seal is failing. The lifetime warranty will require me to buy a new ptu pay for removal of the old and installation of the new one. Then pay for shipment back of the old one and then it up to them if they would cover the failed ptu.

Just drill and tap a drain hole in your existing unit and change the fluid before it’s too late
This is what I like company's that Don just make the same crap they find the issues and make it better
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. When you took it back, did they notice where the fluid was coming from or the cause of the leak.
Great video explanation! What is the approximate cost for this type of repair in 2022?
Hello, Thank you for your kind words! To answer your question, Unfortunately we can't price a job or even approximate a cost, as labor rates change in different areas and at different shops.
I've seen this Dorman box available below $700 at certain web retailers. Figure 6 hours for a mechanic if you can't do it yourself (it's a handful to be sure), so I'd guess about $1200 - $1500.
@ohger1 an honest shop would quote that price. I've seen another You tube mechanic quote that price as what he charges for the work
Have you made already a replacement for a Bronco Sport 1.5L ?
PTO has nothing to do with this power take off is used for powering other equipment
Wish yall made them for sport explorer
Hi, I will let the product know of your new product idea.
Could you please specify the correct part # for the 2014 explorer sport with 3.5 eco boost?
I am confused with so many variants. Thank you.
Hello! Unfortunately, we do not offer one at this time. The only one we do offer at this time is for the non-ecoboost models. I apologize for the inconvenience. I will let our product team know of your new product idea. Thank you!
Great Job, Lemmy!
Thanks!
What part would I need for a Ford Fusion 3.0L AWD SEL 2010? (TR CODE is W)
How much is the ptu

Thank you! I am thinking of purchasing a 2018 MKZ AWD and it is nice to know there is another option.
Hi Parmela, so glad we could help!
What's your warranty? What is your new seal material? How have you addressed your early seal failures as described in the comments? Do you use new Ford internal parts and case?
I'm looking at a used Lincoln MKT which has the same PTU. I was thinking of adding a diff cooler like off roaders use.
Called Dorman about this, Parts and then tech services could NOT FIND ANY FOR FORD ESCAPES
Hello, could you please tell us what year Ford Escape you have so I can make a note to our product team for a new product idea.
What country is this manufactured in? What country are the components that go into are from? Thanks!
Hi Gary, good question! Part number 600-234XD is made in India.

Why will this not fit the 2011 Taurus SHO?
Hi Matthew, we list part # 600-239 as the correct part. To your question - it is because Ford applications says the SHO had different gearing than the standard Taurus.
I have a 2012 ford edge sport 3.7L V6 AWD. Is this compatible with the 3.7L?
Hi Julian, you would need part # 600-237. Here is the link to our website on where to buy. www.dormanproducts.com/p-127014-600-237.aspx?origin=keyword
Any chance y'all are working on upgraded units for the 2014+ Jeep Cherokee PTU's and RDUs?
Hello, I will let our product team know of your new product idea, thank you!
Hello, please email kpupillo@dormanproducts.com with your address so we can send you out a seal kit.
Do you guys have for 2017 Explorer Sport??
Hi Jeff, Our PTU (part # 600-239) will fit your 2017 Explorer as long as it has the 3.5L naturally aspirated engine. Here is the link to the PTU.

Question: How am I supposed to fix my Ford’s PTU’s for good if you don’t have anything for my Ford vehicles? From your website, “Sorry, this part is not a fit for your 2011 Ford F150 or your 2015 Ford Taurus SHO”.
Hello, unfortunately we do not have a full line of the XD PTUs yet. I will let our product team know of your new product idea. Thank you.
No fix for the 2016 3.5 xlt? Just the older models?
Hi Ellija, unfortunately not. I will let the product team know of your new product idea. Thank you!

Hi there, we don't sell directly to consumers, but our products are widely available from nearly all auto parts stores and distributors. If helpful, you can even see which stores have this part, and any other product, in stock near you. Learn more here: www.dormanproducts.com/pages/wheretobuy/dorman.aspx
It's on backorder 90day possibly longer. Dorman doesn't specify a warranty. They told me to contact my local parts store. Autozone wants $1080 AnD a $400 core charge and couldn't tell me anything about warranty on this unit.
Hi there, here's our warranty policy, but you do need to work with your point of purchase on warranty claims: www.dormanproducts.com/pages/products/warranty/index.aspx

Does this fit the first generation Lincoln MKZ AWD? Or Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan, 2006-2012 ?
Unfortunately it does not fit those applications.
Do you have a model that will fit a 2013 taurus interceptor? Any difference besides the temp sensor in the police models?
Hey Dustin, you can get detailed fitment data on our website as well as see other PTO replacements. If you have more specific questions, you can reach out to our Tech Support team during the week. Yes, the police models have a coolant line running to them.
Where I can get this? Seems to be out of stock pretty much everywhere.
