Sir, I highly appreciate your professional way of explaining a complex machine. You made it very easy to be understood by a lay man. Highly commendable.
I was trying to understand a transmission, i watched to many videos but just couldn't understand.. this video with all its demonstrations helped me so much.. thank u
This has got to be one of the best explanations and demonstrations of a manual transmission on the internet. I've been through several and this really clears up a lot of concepts. And for the content critics, you're not really helping. I'd hazard a guess that we'd be lucky if 1% of current generation could even change their own oil. The skills and knowledge this man is spreading are going to be absolutely vital in the near future. I'm glad I grew up with a dad that taught me how to work on my car. Right now, in my area, you can't get your car into a shop in the same week, often not in the same month. If you don't know how to work on your rig, you're gonna be stuck. The average age of tradespersons in the US is climbing at an alarming rate. How about we focus less on his lack stellar video editing and production skills and focus on the invaluable experience he's sharing. Plenty of gen-z kids are going to be perfectly competent content creators, but a tiny handful of them can work on a transmission, and that's gonna bite at some point, hard.
Great presentation. Personally, I barely even noticed the coughing. That's because I'm not a whiny ADHD-addled keyboard jockey with zero concentration.
This was way better than any video featuring 3D animations of manual transmissions. Really gotta see the real thing in action to feel like it's practical. Thank you for showing ALL of your working and continuing to repeat key phrases and concepts as you kept using them. I appreciated how centered this was on Neutral. Like, that's the starting point for everything, and then where can and do you go from there? I learned to drive automatic transmission cars and I'm about to take a course on how to ride a motorcycle (but I haven't yet), which I know will involve manipulating manual transmission. Until now, I always kind of regarded Neutral as a "neat feature" of the gearbox, but I personally never found any practical use for it. This video has driven home some concepts that make me really appreciate the Neutral gear position, and I hope that I can apply this lesson in ways that will make me a better driver and a better rider.
Glad this was my first recommended video for a manual transmission. You did a great job, and to all the ones saying this could be done it 10 minutes, I want to see a video of you doing this in 10 minutes, in full depth.
Watched the whole thing perfectly fine with good interest into his explanations etc, went down to the comments and everyone is complaining about him coughing? Man I noticed one cough at the start of the video, after that I was too focused on the transmission and his explanations. It is a shame TH-cam took 10 years for this to get in my inbox.
One could hear in his cough that it's because some fluids might have gone down the wrong pipe just before shooting. I had a small laugh about it, but the dedication deserves praise. Then I was more focused on the gears turning.
After watching this video, I can boldly say it gave me comprehensive knowledge about the mechanism behind the manual transmission (how each gear work with others). God bless you, sir. I had even developed a passion to pursue a career in mechanical engineering, we're expecting more about automobiles. Much love from Nigeria.
I did not expect the sheer amount of clueless people in the comments bashing you for a minor cough and/or completely missing the point of the video. As someone going into mechanical engineering, thanks for the knowledge! As for the completely useless negative comments: socialise more and get an education.

For real though. I finally understand that the transmission fluid isn't just for keeping the gears themselves from grinding up, but the synchronizer rings as well if they're having to rub up against another gear spinning at a different speed.
Thank you, I'm learning to drive stick and this really helped me conceptualize what is going on as I'm driving and what needs to happen for me to shift gears

very thorough, I also like that everything in it is real, real metal, real parts, and a real voice to explain everything. (as opposed to all the AI, animation, etc that's out today)
It took me a long time to understand how all of that works, being a car guy and self taught mechanic. I also learned the difference between a transmission and a transaxle, and how it works in a motorcycle. Very informative, thank you!
I know this is a 9 year old video so I don't think I'll get an answer but if anyone could throw me a bone. How does the synchronizer rings match to the gear you are trying to shift into? Correct me please if wrong, but they are spinning same speed as output at all times correct? So you shift out into neutral how do the cogs or grooves for the synchronizer and the gear you're shifting into match if they are spinning at separate speeds? I really appreciate this video. Everything I've learned about cars is from TH-cam so some things are difficult to get across, this really was a big help for a lot of concepts
Was just learning from this video too but I don't think the synchronizer rings spin at output shaft speed all time, rather it's a tapered pressure fit onto both the input and out put side and so allowing a buffer zone for both sides. They are made out of a softer metal to take the damage instead of the input/output gears too.
Simple. As you pushes the synchronizer against the gear, it's get tighter. Friction hold them together, thus matching their speed. That's also the reason why they wear out...
No... When in neutral gear, input shaft will continue to spin as long as the engine is running (and of course the clutch is connected), but the output shaft will not spin, they're not connected at all... In neutral, only the input shaft and synchroniser hubs that spin in the same speed, since none of the shift gears are connected to the hubs... When you're shifting gears, like netral to first, the 1st-2nd shift sleeve will connecting the synchroniser hub to the first gear, and if you shift again from first to second, then the 1st-2nd sleeve will connecting the synchroniser hub to the second gear, the synchroniser gears (brass) are simply to smoothing the shift between gear, the same thing happen when you go from third to fourth gear... But, when you go from second to third gear, the 1st-2nd sleeve will back to neutral while the 3rd-4th sleeve will now connecting the hubs and the respective gears...
I apologize for the coughing during this 2012 video. I am not a smoker, I am not sick, I just took a drink of water before shooting the video and got some water down the wrong pipe. I was shooting a video for my students and I was in a hurry.

It took me a long time to understand how all of that works, being a car guy and self taught mechanic. I also learned the difference between a transmission and a transaxle, and how it works in a motorcycle. Very informative, thank you!
Legend has it, hes still trying to clear his throat to this very day.
lol
@justasoldier 1611 Legend has it, you are still just a wannabe, just like you where 9 years ago lmao
It was too good to understand and obvious no complaint about coughing.
Thanks for watching
Great video, thanks!. Step 1: Provide a brilliant piece of informationStep 2: Ughhm umm.
You not a mechanic,
You not a teacher,
You are the Hero ❤️❤️
But, when you go from second to third gear, the 1st-2nd sleeve will back to neutral while the 3rd-4th sleeve will now connecting the hubs and the respective gears...
this man had Corona before it was cool
the second i heard him clear his throat, i knew this vid was legit.
Thanks for watching!
Appreciate the explanation of the manual transmission workings being demonstrated with a actual transmission gearbox, not some 3D simulation.
Thank you very much
This was simply excellent.
Thank you!
What this guy think i learned: how a manual transmission works
What i actually learned: how to clear my throat properly
Great demonstration! Gives me a lot of appreciation for the engineers who made such a beautiful system
WAY easier to understand compared to an automatic transmission.
@David Wanklyn
Thanks for telling me that , I've got a c6 that I want to experiment on as far as larger gear ratios and that will help me a lot .
my guy lowkey has coronavirus but he wingin it though, gotta give him props👏👏👏
Look at the upload date homie
