    hey working on a 2008 ford taurus x and i dont think you took out the actual seal but you helped me with the shield

    In order to remove the axle I think I see it right - you didn't have to disconnect the low ball joint at all. How did you do that? I thought you have to disconnect that low ball joint first and pull on the wheel hub and THEN have enough room to remove the axle from the wheel hub.

      Yeah I'm pretty sure I disconnected the ball joint. I didn't include all those details because I hadn't planned on making a video until things got so crazy with the job.

    Hello! Thanks, this was helpful for us, on a 2011 Ford Exploder. Used a jack handle as extension for seal driver. That did it!

    Hey what if you don’t put the dust cover back on ? A Macanic said I really didn’t need it back on after seal replacement and I still have oil leak worst than before ?

    • @Arturo-im1nh
      @Arturo-im1nh ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure you need it. Mine spins and I’m sure that’s what’s causing my leak. I work at jiffy lube and have seen that Explorers with the dust cover that doesn’t move don’t have leaks

    Should the dust cover be able to spin after it is installed? I had a shop do mine and the dust cover doesn't seem to be seated tight enough. When the unit is cold it spins free

    • @techwrightauto

      I remember it spinning freely. That could change when it's hot.

    What size seal driver did you use for dust shield

      Not sure, it's been awhile but it was from the seal driver set they sell at Harbor Freight.

    Great video. I think the yellow protective sealant is for installation purpose and needs to be taken out before you put the shaft back in?? Correct me if I am wrong. Also do you have a part no for the kit from ford? I have the same issue on Taurus x. Thanks

    What way did the first seal with little spring go

  • @arturorubio7106

    at 9:50 is that whtite platic piece supposed to be able to rotate freely with everything including the axle still attached? Mine I can rotate with my hands and I'm not sure if its supposed to be like that. Im wondering because I have visible moisture about 4 inches out where my axle connects into and I don't know if I gotta replace the axle or just this seal?

    • @techwrightauto
      @techwrightauto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember it spinning freely. I'm not sure where you're getting moisture. Is it past the seal? Normally with a seal like this you wouldn't get moisture inside you would get oil leaking outside.

    Damaged plastic dust cover can cause transmission oil leakage 🤔

    • @Arturo-im1nh
      @Arturo-im1nh ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what happened to me. Idk if I caused it thou because I tried seeing if it would spin and it did. Two weeks later I noticed it was leaking:/

      @@Arturo-im1nh Hello Arturo, the white cover that rotates is only a dust cover that protects the seal from dust, the cause is inside that dust cover, you have to remove the cv arrow and right there at the bottom is the seal that controls the transmission oil , that's the problem, I bought white plastic thinking that it was the seal and it wasn't, it's just the cover, the seal is at the bottom, and in my case mine was already broken, regards!

      @@techwrightauto cool.I just finished inner trany seal ,alignment washer ,big ptu output shaft seal and that plastic dust cover on 2012 Ford Explorer AWD.Changed ptu gear oil too.I have purchased blind hole bearing puller set at harborfreight tools but had to make my own extension bar to do it.To put outside ptu seal I used 32mm socket and for plastic cover just used a block of hardwood.Honestly took me the whole day because I have had to make that extension bar.

      @@jemerich27 it's been awhile now but I got the seal and the dust cover from the local dealer. They had it in stock and it came as a kit. The seal is behind the dust cover so that would go in first.

    Tip for removing the 'black disc' (dust cover): Use a seal puller. You will probably break the plastic tabs inside it but it's not going to damage anything else.

      Also for those who need to know the plastic spacer goes in first before the seal is installed. I had to call the dealer to make sure because there wasn't one there from the factory and I couldn't see it in the video.

    Thanks for the video. I tried the repair today on my Ford Edge, but when I pulled the shaft out of the PTU, transmission fluid poured out and wouldn't stop so I put the axle back in. Did you have to drain the transmission first, or do I have another bad seal on the other side of the PTU?

    • @techwrightauto
      @techwrightauto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't remember how much fluid came out when I did it. It is pretty normal to have transmission fluid come out when you pull a shaft out on a transmission.
