  • In this video I cover a common problem with 2008-2018 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury cars and SUVs. The failure of the rear driveshaft can cause bad vibrations throughout the vehicle. Watch as I give a step by step replacement guide.

My 2010 Taurus SHO had vibrations under power. Carrier bearing was dried up and binding. I must say, the DORMAN OE Upgrade shaft is well worth the wait and 380.00 price. Their U joint is serviceable, carrier bearing is serviceable as are the two end CV joints. The FORD FoMoCo shaft is NOT. Over 300 Ford shafts on back order right now and they are close to 700 each with a 6 month wait right now.

Today's AWD SUV's with side mounted engines (crank is left to right - not front to back of vehicle) are front-wheel-drive-always and rear-wheel-drive-added as needed by the ECM/trans computer. Most have a clutch system at both ends of the rear drive. At times the rear drive shaft will actually completely stop turning altogether when "not needed" in normal operation. Most rear drive shafts have at least 3 (and sometimes 4) u-joints in the rear drive shaft. If any of the center u-joints begin to "lockup or stick" the whipping of the shaft can be very scary. The car can shake so bad the glovebox may fly open. If you have a vibration that is driving your mechanic crazy - there is one good thing about these AWD systems. For no (or little) cost have the rear drive shaft temporally removed. The car will still drive just fine, just will be a front wheel drive only vehicle. If the vibration is gone, replace the entire rear drive shaft as an assembly. Both GM and Ford (and most other brand names) AWD's use non-rebuildable rear drive shafts on these models. The center "rubber" carrier bearing(s) is not removable and is "trapped" between two welded parts of the shaft. Look to Rock Auto for a replacement and save a $100.00 bucks or so. And until you can put a good one up to replace the bad one you will have a plan-Jane front wheel drive vehicle.

I just bought a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5 L ecoboost with 47k miles. I am experiencing vibration that is audible and can be felt through the steering wheel and peddles. The best comparison wouuld be it feels and sounds like low frequency base sounds coming from a sub woofer while a rap song is playing. I took it to a ford dealer ship today and we took it for a spin with the tech. He had his computer hooked up to the truck while we drove. He was monitoring the transmission and didnt note anything irregular. Originally before testing he thought it sounded like a torque converter issue but we ruled that out pretty quickly. The mechanic said he wanted to lift the truck up and get under it while somone is giving it gas and trying to recreeate the issue. His next theory is that there may be drive shaft issues causing the vibration. WIsh me luck. Any input on my issue is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

great video. I took mine out to change fuel pump, and the person helping must have accidentally kicked while working under my Ford Explorer 2012. It came apart and the seal inside wasn't secure. couldn't tell how the seal goes. looks like it goes around where the bolts go but not sure since part of it was behind the bearings. anything you can tell me how it is suppose to be installed. I went under it a few days later and found grease had splattered. I forgot to mention it came apart on the rear side.

I'm quite surprised that the undercarriage is pretty clean. I'm assuming the Explorer is from your neck of the woods, so it's nice to see that the road salt hasn't really caused any rust....yet!
You're probably like me and tend to keep your personal stuff out of the eyes of others, but I think we'd all enjoy a current picture of Little In The Shop. Maybe at the end of the next video?
Stay safe with the coming storm, brother. We only got 2" yesterday with anothet 1" due today here in Cincinnati.

We had same vibration. Removed the drive shaft and it’s notchy and not very smooth for sure, but when we drove the vehicle without it to confirm this was the problem, while it’s better it now has a shake at 110-120kph and it’s not as violent. We’ve done lower control arms, sway bar link, tie rod ends. Now need to get alignment done. Also balanced wheels. Any suggestions?
