I was just making a point that a video where Mike kicks multiple knives into dummy skulls would be mostly-pointless fun, And lead to discussions in the comments on what knife is better.
Being more likely to hurt yourself with a dull blade than a sharp blade is 100% true but I'm pretty sure that saying is referring to cooking knives not self defense lol

pushing too hard cause the knife is dull leads to it slipping and you stabbing yourself. And as someone who has had a few stitches from being dumb with a knife a sharp knife's wound stitches up cleaner than a dull knife's wound

The skull is effectively a prolate ellipsoid. It gets its strength by flexing slightly and allowing the energy being put into it to dissipate around the surface. Once you introduce a crack or puncture into that surface you're creating a point beyond which the stresses can't dissipate so you're limiting the area and introducing a weak point which will be likely to crack or split further when more force is applied. Long story short, once you've punched one hole in the skull, or even just cracked it, you're making it easier for subsequent hits to punch through as well.

I consider myself a knife person and I think what you want from an EDC knife and a self defence knife are really quite different. Yes there is some crossover but they have different main purposes, but sometimes people try apply the ideas from one to the other. Sometimes it is helpful like one handed opening methods, other times is it just flare so people can show off to their friends.
If you sharpened an edge of the Damascus dagger it would be all 3: an EDC tool, a weapon and pocket jewelry.
It'd sad to consider ppl carrying knifes every day but I had 1200 dollars of French t10 balisong so I'm wielder then sword dudes where knife dudes 1 up them lolol no I can't flip trick it nor word I try with the blade lol 😅 but dam talk about a caged blade
@@based_prophet I've carried a knife every day, starting at 8 years old. Nothing sad about it, they're just plain handy to have around when something needs to be opened. I don't carry them for defense though, they're just tools. When it comes to defense there are better means available.
This is absolutely true.
I prefer a reverse grip for a self defense role, so I can put up my hands like a boxer or keeping it in a hidden grip so I'm not obvious that I'm armed and can possibly put it away without having to use it if possible and go my own way without incident.
Exactly...it is better to keep your hands up in fight. prevents sneaky chokes too!! Also while you might get a longer lunge distance with shakehand, You tend to expose way more. To each it's own pros but reverse is too good for a wrestler/Grappler and a Striker.

I prefer a sharpened edge on a self defence knife for two reasons. Like you I’ve found through live cutting that a reverse grip allows for much more ease in power generation. An edge allows for two things. The ability to “cut out” of a stab with a ripping motion, as well as the ability to perform pull cuts when the tip has gone past the target/on stab retraction.
100% agree. A very sharp knife doesn't need much force. One major upside is the fact, that you can just twist your hand and cut into anything you can get, when he catches your arm.
Also, deep cuts are much more likely to get major blood vessels with than stabs

It's struck me that I could make a reasonable substitute by taking a stainless steel pair of scissors, and taking them apart. I'd end up with two concealable defence knives. Make a couple of simple sheaths, Bob's your Uncle 😀
This thinking has got me into bad habits. I now wander around the shops, searching for scissors. When I spot a pair, I stand there spinning them around on my fingers, trying to visualise knife fighting.
Store detectives are no doubt rather concerned 😀
I'm set to start taking welding classes soon, things will be rough as I try to balance a full tike job, online college and nightime welding classes. The thing that will keep me going is knowing that in four or five months I can start buying all the cool gear IcyMike reviews.

To add more grip to your sheath, put a ranger band/cut bicycle tube around the kydex portion of the sheath, underneath the clip. This way the sheath stays put, on your shorts, with less chance of a failed draw.

Although I like the lightweight aluminum, I still think their best blade is the MDV. It's one of my favorite in the rotation for IWB fixed blades.
I’m really glad you’re reviewing this. I do armed security and this conceals very nicely behind the pouch on my vest. I’m very big on not looking like the over zealous security guard and also not carrying anything I won’t actually need. I had a debate with a coworker of mine who carried a very large Amazon special fixed blade on his vest. He asked my opinion and I expressed that it was ridiculous. He’s more likely to be hurt by that knife, also looks really unprofessional and tacticool. Surprisingly he was actually open minded instead of being offended. I pointed him towards the dagger which he never noticed i carried. What I really love about it is that it’s very “oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck!” Granted although you should always seek training, but the dagger is super nice to have even without the training. You just stick em, and make space.

I have carried the SOCP dagger, which is very similar in design, but much slimmer so that you can handle a firearm without stowing the knife. I think the Skallywag looks pretty great too. I think if I were carrying a gun too, I'd still rather have the SOCP, but if I'm just carrying a knife (more everyday) I think I'd rather have the Skallywag. For an EDC knife that you can use for practical things, passes blade length rules, and still fights well, I swear by the Gerber FAST 06 with a tanto point. I've been carrying that for almost 20 years all over everywhere and have never found better for all purpose.
I prefer the reverse grip for a lot of reasons. I think slashing attacks are not as reliable as stabbing and stabbing is way easier/more reliable in a reverse grip. In my experience (on dummies) the most reliable way to do the most damage is to stab and rip/tear out, which is easier with a reverse grip. I also like the reverse grip a lot of the clinch/trap applications found across dirty boxing systems. (For me it feels very reminiscient of the fook sao -- hooking hand -- in Wing Chun.)
The Skallywag is broad with a relatively steep taper such that its more like a spearhead or an arrowhead than a knife in a lot of ways -- optimized for piercing. That thing is purpose built for going through clothes (including multi layers and tough materials like leather) and the skull.
Finally, kicking the knife further into the head with a scorpion kick wins you this year's Winter Soldier Award from the weird knife guy association. Well done. Beautiful work. (Not being sarcastic.)
Based on my limited anecdotal experiences and military experience, I found the SOCP dagger concept pretty convincing, and I keep one on my chest rig front and center. To reiterate, the SOCP concept is a "get off me" tool in case I get tangled up during close quarters social work. About a year after I added this to my rig, my old friend (who is retired sf) mentioned that he was in the SOCP program before he retired, and he had the same response. I hope I never have to use it, but the narrow concept is doctrinally sound.

I really appreciate the practical testing, and this tool seems good for its very narrow intent of purpose. I give Skallywag credit for offering an affordable training model (kershaw, spyderco, for instance have very expensive trainers). On the retention tests though, especially when it's on you vest, it seems like the attacker has even better access to it. I'd like to see tests where the attacker goes for the dagger as soon as they notice it.
Yeah it seems like that's easier for the attacker to get it to your neck than it is for you to get it aimed at them. I guess if you have a rifle in your hands then both it and your arms will both be in the way, but it sill seems sketchy. Edit: Also, the ring that makes it easy for you to grab from concealment also makes it easy for attackers who know where it is to grab it.

Can confirm that hard use makes you quickly reconsider your knife selection. I used to edc a Tops street scalpel, until a friend had me reverse grip it and hit a pork shoulder. Hand went right down onto the blade, fortunately he had prepared me for this and I was wearing a glove that held. I switched over to a Toor Jank Shank, the geometry prevents slippage and the ring lets me keep it in my hand while doing other things (e.g. clearing a jammed pistol)

I will say that depending on the laws in your area, you may need to be able to argue that the knife you are carrying is for a purpose other than self defense. In that case, a purpose build anti-person spike may not be the best choice.

There's a reason why in HEMA, you notice that the cutty things are held in a regular grip, whereas stabby daggers get held in a reverse grip

@@mulli032 Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, it depends on the kind of dagger. But in general, the kind of dagger used on the battlefield was a rondel dagger, which had the sole purpose of getting past armor, and so was only concerned with stabbing, and so gave up a cutting edge in order to have a reinforced blade. Of course, this trickles down into things like judicial duels and civilian weapons. Assassins would use stabby daggers too because they're more fatal than cutting someone. But of course, if a peasant has a big ass work knife, then they'll use the big ass work knife to cut.

That's why I use a clinch pick or a disciple from Shivworks. Or if I want one that has more utility I use a gryphon boot knife, same design since the early 90's and they still sell them, just a better steel now. Trying to access a folder under pressure is way too hard, I've accidentally just thrown the thing a few times.

Socp dagger is much smaller and more narrow. Great piercing power. Sharpened edges near the tip.

front/hammergrip for slashing/hooking/digging into meat. back/icepick grip for deep penetration damage/force. for me, putting my index finger along the flat of the blade helps for front grip as well
Keep in mind the difference between ballistic head trauma is enormously different from piercing trauma. Years ago I read a history of battlefield wound treatment. One account described a soldier who was struck directly on the head with a halberd. He killed his opponent, then walked off the battlefield to the surgeon's tent holding the halberd, which was still lodged in his skull. He begged the surgeon to remove the halberd, but the doctor told him the removal would kill him. The man walked to his tent and spent the night moaning, walked back in the morning still holding the halberd, begged some more, then walked back to his tent and died in the afternoon. Stab wounds to the brain may take hours or days to be fatal.
I remember watching a video of some old commandos from WW2 talking about the Fairbairn Sykes knife, if I recall accurately one of the veterans was talking about one of his squad who challenged their CO on the front versus backhand grip.
The CO demonstrated that the front grip (the blade extended past the thumb rather than hammerfist style past the pinky) was the best way to actually kill an enemy, then immediately had the squaddie removed from the commandos because he challenged the CO instead of obeying orders even in training.
I too, find the backhand grip as more secure and easier to conceal but I do question if it's completely dependant on the knife being used. I pretty much only carry Pukka knives and the bulkier blade would be difficult to slide through ribs but is a great slasher.
@@donrowlett2886 In the case of the Sykes knife, it's a quite thin but super sharp blade designed to go between ribs and tickle the heart or slice through the throat. The commandos who used it were usually very experienced soldiers, I'm not confident it was a Kruger effect because they had the bodies to back it up especially for their behind-the-lines style.
My point was more about the actual knife being used rather than the method. I feel (yeah I know, anecdotal) that if the knife itself is what decides the way it should be used, similar to swords. A gladius generally shouldn't be slashed and a katana shouldn't generally be stabbed although they can do both. The design dictates the function.
@@FaithRox The gladius was used for slashing. Seeing all the variations of gladius that have a leaf shape or otherwise flair out near the tip is the first clue that this misconception must be wrong. Even the ones that have completely parallel edges are wide enough to indicate suitability for cutting. Stabbing weapons tend to thin out towards the tip, or even start thin and stay that way. The gladius is clearly meant to be a generalized short sword, not a glorified dagger.
On the flip side, Fairbarn Sikes actually designed two daggers. The other one is the smatchet, which has a very wide blade meant for hacking. The more well known dagger was a specialized sentry removal weapon meant for sneak attacks, while the smatchet was for stand up battle in cqc. And because it was a hacking weapon, it has similar advantages to holding a dagger in reverse grip. It really is better to attack that way against a resisting opponent whenever possible. But it is best to train both just in case.
@@formlessone8246 This is true, of course. The Roman Gladius was around for centuries, it's form would change or specialise in response to new technologies or methodologies or problems. I was speaking in generalisations, and spoke that they could be used in other ways.
We have many manuals on tactical use of weapons from those eras and the big highlight is usually that in use with their shields, legionnaires were instructed to stab as slashing was more difficult while weilding a large shield and fighting in a compact formation. Exceptions are of course warranted.
@FaithRox the other issue you're not considering is reach.
The thumbs up/standard grip gives you more reach, even against a person using the same knife. It is monumentally better when you are at arms reach plus, or know you are about to get into a knife fight for that reason. You lead with the weapon as it's both your best defense and offense.
The underhand grip is best utilized off the draw or in close because 1) that's how you're going to draw it and fiddling around with it while adrenaline is pumping in that situation is bad, and 2) its a much stronger grip for retention, as well as being able to be utilized as a hook for even more control -- its the superior ultra close range grip.
The standard knife/dagger as a weapon has it's grip usage dictated by the distance you're using it at.
If you doubt or want to argue that, grab some sharpies and have a guy that knows anything at all about distance control to use the standard grip while you use the underhand.
You're going to find out real quick how much that extra 3 to 6 inches makes all the difference in the world becaise they're going to be "sclicing" all your fingers and forearms before you even get a chance to stab with that grip.

Hard2hurt , I'd love to see you compare use cases of this dagger with a persuader/Kubotan, having in mind that these do not have blade, but can be held the same way and used to provide pain compliance.
The D2 is going to beat the skull everytime, the Aluminum would have been a harder challenge for the Dagger. If you want to bling out carry the Damascus. I like that they have taken the EDC truism: that if something is heavy or akward, it will not be an EDC, to it's ultimate conclusion.

That montage was absolute classic
With the underhand grip and performing a stabbing motion with a slight hooking arc, you will get best results if aiming for the area around the head, to focus on hitting the area below the ear, neck, throat and shoulders. This will allow you to maximize chance of inflicting damage to or even severing the following; External carotid artery, Stylopharyngeus muscle (jaw clenching muscle), temporomandibular ligament (what keeps jaw from dislocating), soft neck tissue and if one strikes a bit low you can still manage to puncture the thorocoacromial artery that runs from the neck, between the pectoral muscles and deltoid, down towards the arm. Any penetrating stab ½-2 inches deep will incapacitate the opponent almost immediately.
One important thing to keep in mind is to avoid getting in a clinch at all cost and the stabs are best performed in a horizontal outwards arc using the opposite side foot to increase thrust. (Especially important if one might lack upper body strength.)

If you carry a knife and a gun, you will end up using the knife at least every other day to cut stuff and the gun will likely never leave it's holster.

16:09 - Yes, the structural integrity of the skull depends on a variety of fused pieces cooperating and being protected by a variety of tissues. If you compromise the tissues and upset the underlying structures, you end up with in some cases a lack of support and in other cases the body actively fighting against itself (break a major load bearing bone in a limb you know what I'm talking about.)

I'm not a self-defense or martial arts guy, but I appreciate watching your videos for the reality and logic you bestow, as well as your humour, of course! I do have a sniff of a background in Karate (Gōjū-ryū), taught to me by my dad, but that's the most notable. He never studied in Okinawa, though - the birth place of Karate (gotta give Jesse some love 😆). When I was about 13, he taught me some conditioning and kata, which I've forgotten 95% of now. Haha! You and some others on here make me want to get back into all that kinda stuff. At the very least, it's all good for health.

I carried another manufacturer's dagger for a while. It's purpose is definitely not to cut and slash. I had it set up for weak-side reverse grip and learned to get to it in a way that i could still draw my sidearm and get both hands on it asap. Like anything else, it comes down to training and practice.

Very valid points, good video. The only thing I'd point out or add though is check local laws, knife laws can be some of the most fickle and confusing things out there. This is speaking from a civilian self defense point of view, not any tactical professional situation.
For example Minnesota has no specific length limit, though certain counties do have a local limit of 3in or below. Automatics and Switchblades are outlawed as well as knuckles (thus a "brass" knuckle knife would fall under that catagory.)
Outside of that the law is summed up as "intent." Intent to cause harm, intent to commit a crime. "Intent" is where things become a gray area. Minnesota has a "Duty to retreat" law (thankfully has Castle Doctrine though.) With that said it's going to up to a court to factor in a knife used as deadly force, which knives are considered deadly force. Will the defense (aggressor) be able to flip a case around against you such as a 12in Bowie knife strapped to your hip, they could argue it was considered intimidation.
In the end the legal battle is going to be mostly about your actions and not focused on the tools used, but it's just something to consider when picking a self defense knife. That is why I love at the beginning you said "the purpose of a dagger is to make some space between you and the person trying to hurt you."

the Feldmesser 81 is my go to knife. its large and bulky, but still fits inside most pants. it has the bonus that i looks like i know how to use it from a "military background" instead of the butterfly of "flick" knife most street punks use.

Since gym shorts is the normal move I'd look into the phlster enigma for edc your self defense pistol. You can wear whatever you want with it and make it work it's a game changer

A sharp knife being safer usually refers to cutting applications. Reverse grip does mean stronger thrust but doesn’t mean grip is bad. A WW2 soldier showed that a regular grip can be good enough. He showed that once you have a hand on the enemy to control him you just try to walk it in from a standing position. A no gi example is when you have their arm in an under or over hook.
Here, melee weapons laws change slightly from city to city, but there is one thing that is pretty much everywhere.
You are not allowed to conceal a knife. So this kind of knife is actually not what is best for self defence in Québec. The concealable part is a serious drawback and can get you in trouble. Also, blade lenght is limited to 10cm, unless you habe a justifiable reason (self defence is not one). You would be allowed to go do some cutting with swords in a park, if you are able to establish a safe perimeter and you are not asked to leave. Sport is a justifiable reason. To be sure though, when we do decide to do cutting, we call the municipality and tell them where and when, which ensure we can train in peace.
In veicles, it is the contrary, they have to not be visible, unless you got a justifiable reason (self defence is not justifiable).
So yes, since laws are about the blade and concealement, a good grip is something you might want in Québec.
On an other note, showing that you are ready for violence is very often the best way to avoid violence. Thus if allowed, showing your knife is a significantly better defence in most scenarios than hiding it. People are much much less likely to try their shit on someone with a visible knife. Having a concealed knife is only good for those up to mischief, those that live where showing it isn't allowed and those likely to end in situations where a visible knife could be grabed by someone else. Everyobe else should diplay the knife it is simply safer.
Ideally, you want a knife that can be seen as a tool too. Technically, under 10cm of blade (about 4 inches), you will be fine in most cities no mater what, but if it is a tool, you can go any fucking size, provided it is reasonable. Also, im some cities, like Montréal, blade size does not mater, a weapon knife is not legal in public, no mater what. You can have a folding knife in your pocket or on your belt, but you can not hide it under your shirt. Pocket and belts are considered normal carry and not concelement, concealing it is always banned, for all blade size, in the whole province, possibly country.
In short, go for a knife that can be used to cut your apple or something. It can be double edged, although, that is likely harder to justify.
I have seen people carve up their food in citu bus with big ass hubting knife and no one gave a shit, although that is definitively pushing the line and they could likely see it confiscated if people complained.

The saying “you’re most likely to hurt yourself with a dull blade” comes from the trades where knives are used a lot like in the culinary field
And I can attest that this is a fact that you will definitely increase the odds of cutting yourself from a slip caused by having to apply more force to complete the cut and that’s if a part of your body is located in the vicinity beneath or behind to the object your working on with the knife
So yes I could see why this could also apply to a defensive or offensive situation with a knife
Now that being said if your talking about protecting or taking a life then you definitely would benefit from having as sharp a blade as possible to make that task not only quicker but just easier to accomplish in general

The icepick grip, ie blade down, gives you more power and a more natural motion of attack for a dagger like this. Handshake and hammer grip, ie blade up, give you longer reach and a better motion to cut and slash. Those are good if you use something like an actual sword, but not something short that is exclusively designed for thrusting.
It would be fun to see a HEMA instructor show some historical dagger and grappling techniques.
